ABSTRACT

We studied clinical results of twenty patients who had ureteral obstruction due to malignant Tumor from April 1985 through July 1991, they were managed by percutaneous nephrostomy and could be followed up. The sites of the primary malignancy were cervix in 8 patients, bladder in 5, prostate in 2, rectum in 2, and miscellaneous in 3. In this series of 20 patients the average survival tae 4.9 months; 11 patients died after discharge, 7 patients died in hospital and now 2 patients are under chemotherapy. We consider that preliminary drainage of the obstructed urinary tract by percutaneous nephrostomy will allow the return of reasonable kidney function and also an opportunity for fuller assessment of the patient`s malignancy prior to definitive therapy.
