ABSTRACT

Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the pattern of maxillary permanent canine impaction in relation to lateral incisors. Methods: This reterospective study was conducted on a sample of population that had been treated in the Dentistry Department. The study con¬sisted of clinical and radiographic examination of 56 patients coming to the department for treatment. The patients having age between 15-18 years were included in the study. Data was analysed using SPSS version 22. A p-value of <0.05 was accepted as statistically significant. Results: Females had more impaction of maxillary canine than males. Palatal canine impaction were the most common in males while buccal canine impaction were more common in females. Conclusion: Maxillary palatal impaction was more common than buccal impaction and maxillary palatal and buccal impaction occurred more often in female subjects.

ABSTRACT

Background: Hypertension goes undetected due to absenceof sign and symptoms. Hence, it is often called the ‘silent killer’.The purpose of the present study was to determine therelevance of routine blood pressure associated among dentalpatients in Patna, Bihar.Materials and Methods: This study was conducted among 40patients of age 35-50 years over an period of 12 months.Relevant clinical history was taken. Trained dental personnel,using a standard mercury sphygmomanometer measured theBP. Patients who were found to have elevated BP of ≥ 140/90mm Hg, had their BP re-checked to confirm the elevated BPafter resting for 2 to 5 minutes. Patients were categorized intoStage 1 hypertension: clinic BP is 140/90 to 160/100 mm Hg.Stage 2 hypertension: clinic BP is 160/100 to 180/110 mm Hg.Severe hypertension: clinic systolic BP is 180 mm Hg or higheror clinic diastolic BP is 110 mm Hg or higher. Statisticalanalysis was done by using SPSS, version 22 (SPSS, Inc.,Chicago, IL) and p<0.05 was considered statisticallysignificant.Results: This total male population in the study was 22 and 18were female participants. On the basis of stage of hypertensionall the participants are equally distributed. 12 were male and 7were female of age group 31-40 years old. 10 were males and11 were females of age group 41-50 years old. In prehypersensitive stage, hypersensitive stage I and hypersensitivestage II males were having more systolic and diastolic bloodpressure than females whereas in severe hypertensionfemales were having more systolic and diastolic blood pressurethan males. Males were having higher hypertension thanfemales in age group 31-40 years age group but in age group41-50 females were having higher hypertension.Conclusion: The prevalence of hypertension is increasing withage in both men and women Therefore, our study recommendsthat regular checkup of blood pressure must be initiated so thatremedial measure can be initiated as early as possible.

ABSTRACT

Aim: Complete denture is essential to rehabilitate the stomatognathic system by improving masticatory efficiency, phonetics and aesthetic appearance of completely edentulous patients. New complete denture wearing may be associated with some complaints like lack of retention and stability, pain or discomfort, accumulation of food under the denture, altered speech, difficulty in chewing, unsatisfactory appearance and retching. So this study was done with the aim to assess the difficulties faced by the people complete dentures prostheses in the rural area of Patna. Methods: A total of 100 complete denture wearers consisting of 58 males and 42 females, within the age group of 60 to 70 years were selected and examined from the rural area of Patna. A self-structured questionnaire was designed to know the complaints of patients regarding dentures. Data was analyzed using SPSS version 22.0. Statistical significance was accepted at p < 0.05. Results: The results revealed that most of complete denture wearers have problems in difficulty in chewing, sore spots, had low confidence and low self-esteem. It is observed that difficulty in chewing is more prevalent problem among males (63.33%) whereas in females sore spots are more prevalent (67.5%). Confidence level was low in both males (53.33%) and females (65%). Difficulty in speech is more common social problem among both males (66.66%) and females (62.5%), [Table 3]. Majority of males (56.66%) and females (45%) have problem of oral stomatitis. Conclusion: This study suggested that complete denture patients faces difficulties hence, as a Prosthodontist, it is our duty to evaluate and treat the root of the cause for a patient’s discomfort.
