ABSTRACT

@#Umbilical artery catheterisation is considered the standard of care for arterial access in neonatal intensive care unit. It is routinely used for blood sampling and blood pressure monitoring. Unfortunately, an indwelling umbilical catheter have been associated with thrombotic complication which may result in either partial or complete occlusion of the aorta. We report here our experience in the diagnosis and treatment of a neonate with this condition.

ABSTRACT

was very useful to improve the quality of life in manycomplex cyanotic heart diseases. It has gone throughvarious modifications since then to improve the outcome.The mortality was reported as 2.1% and survival rate of at 5years, 10 years, 15 years and 20years were 91%, 80%, 73%and 69% respectively. Though it was a useful palliativeprocedure to improve the quality of life, it hascomplications which may affect the morbidity and mortalitylike Protein loosing enteropathy ,reduced exercise capacitythromboembolism. The patients with protein losingenteropathy present with Pleural effusion, ascites, andedema and they need periodic replacement of Albumin andfrequent reviews and close follow up in the management toreduce the mortality and to improve the quality of life .Thesecomplications we come across and they need our support inthe management at district level hospitals.
