ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES@#This study investigate the clinical and imaging features of Ewing sarcoma (ES) of the jaw.@*METHODS@#Eight cases of pathologically diagnosed ES of the jaw from January 2010 to June 2022 were included in the study. Clinical and radiological features were retrospectively analyzed.@*RESULTS@#Among the eight cases, the mean age at onset was 29.4 years, and the male to female ratio was 7∶1. The predilecting site was the posterior part of mandible, accounting for 75% of the cases. The lesions often exhibited early numbness of the lower lip and lymphadenopathy. The main radiographic manifestation of mandibular lesions was ill-defined radiolucency, mixed with fibrous or brush-like tumor matrix, and soft tissue mass. The maxillary ES lesions mainly presented as lytic bone destruction accompanied by adjacent soft tissue mass. Periosteal ossification was rarely seen.@*CONCLUSIONS@#The clinical and imaging characteristics of ES in the jaw are helpful for its diagnosis.

ABSTRACT

Objective To summary the application of computer aided three-dimensional visualization technique in different kinds of mandibular detects reconstruction with vascularized free fibular flap. Methods Five patients diagnosed of recurrent mandibular ameloblastoma underwent the virtually operation by software with a thin-slice CT scan, which determined shape and position of the free flap, and preoperative resin model and modules were designed and prefabricated. Then the titanium plates were bent precisely, and the surgical reconstruction proceeded exactly as expected from the modeling process. Results All operations were achieved successfully. The extent of the lesion was coincident with the preoperative CT results, and the vascularized free fibular flaps were harvested and implanted into the defect regions accurately. The mean distance was (0.23 ±2.10) mm compared with the virtual fibula. The mean time of operation was 4.4 hours.Following up the mean 12.8 months, all patients obtained the excellent functional and cosmetic outcomes. Conclusion The procedure of operation was simplified and the time was shortened with reconstruction exactly using computer aided three-dimensional visualization technique, and the clinical therapeutic efficacy of reconstruction of mandibular defect with vascularized free fibular flaps was improved notably.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVETo investigate the root length of posterior teeth after palatal expansion by magnetic expansion appliance.

METHODSA total of 32 patients who accepted palatal expansion with magnetic expansion appliance were enrolled in the study. Pretreatment and post-treatment cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) images were obtained. A paired t test was used to evaluate the length change, and a group t test was used to compare the tooth lengths of developing and developed teeth.

RESULTSAnchorage teeth showed greater root resorption than non-anchorage teeth, whereas the developed posterior teeth showed reduced resorption. Moreover, the mesial buccal roots of the first molar and first premolar were reduced. No resorption was found in the developing teeth group.

CONCLUSIONThe magnetic palatal expansion can reduce the root length, particularly of developed root. The developing root of anchorage teeth show greater tolerance to resorption than the developed root. Early palatal expansion treatment with magnetic expansion appliance can reduce the risk of root resorption.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVETo study the clinic presentation, radiology, pathology of recurrent ameloblastoma (RAB).

METHODSAll RAB cases accepted treatment in School of Stomatology of Nanjing University during 1996.1-2008.3 were retrospected. The clinic presentation, the radiological classification and pathological classification were summarized and analyzed.

RESULTSThere were 23 RAB patients during 1996.1-2008.3. 3 patients recurred twice, 20 patients recurred once, and 26 cases were found together. 19 patients were performed conservative surgery while 4 patients were performed radical surgery in the primary treatment; 4 patients were performed conservative surgery and 19 patients were performed radical surgery in the recurrence. The radiological classification included 12 cases multicystic, 6 cases unicystic, and 8 cases extraosseous. The pathological classification included 21 cases follicular ameloblastoma, and 5 cases plexiform ameloblastoma. The multicystic after conservative surgery (11 cases) and extraosseous ameloblastoma after radical treatment (8 cases) were more than others according the radiological classification and treatment.

CONCLUSIONConservative surgery has apparent higher recurrences rate than radical surgery. The follicular ameloblastoma has more aggressive biological behave and is more liable to recurred.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To investigate the correlation between the presence of a crown (CR) or a proximal restoration (PR) and furcation involvement (FI) on molars. Methods: Data were collected from 237 teeth in 44 patients who had restored and non-restored molars with or without FI.The clinical examinations were conducted on the molars including CR,PR,FI, mobility(MO), endodontic treatment(EN) and probe of periodontal attachment level(PAL). Results: Molars with CR or PR had a significantly highter percentage of FI (P0.05) when compared to molars without restorations. Conclusion: The molars with crowns or restorations involving the proximal tooth surfaces have a highter prevalence of FI and more periodontal attachment lose than molars without restorations.
