ABSTRACT
O termo neonatologia foi definido como a arte e a ciência do diagnóstico e o tratamento dos distúrbios do recém-nascido (RN). A neonatologia é uma especialidadededicada à assistência ao RN, bem como à pesquisa clínica, sendo sua principal meta a reduçãoda mortalidade e morbidade perinatais na procura da sobrevivência do RN nas melhores condições funcionais possíveis. A partir da segunda metade do século XX, vários autores defenderam a regionalização das unidades e o transporte de gestante de alto risco para centros especializados na assistência perinatal que possuíssem uma unidade de cuidados especiais para recém-nascidos. Esse projeto de regionalização é um programa cooperativo visando, por meio de esforços coordenados dos prestadores de serviço de saúde de uma determinada região, intervir no processo reprodutivo,colocando à disposição da gestante e do seu filho o nível de cuidado médico adequado à sua morbidade ou risco de vida. Esta proposta promoveu uma efetiva redução da mortalidade e das sequelas em longo prazo. O surgimento das unidades de cuidados intensivos neonatal e a visão regional do atendimento ao recém-nascido, sobretudo ao prematuro, permitiram melhorar esse atendimento.
The term neonatology was defined as the art and the science of the diagnosis and the treatment of diseases of the newborn infant. Neonatology is a specialty dedicated to assistance the newborn, as well the clinical searches, being its main goal the reduction of perinatal morbidity and mortality, in the search of the survival on the best possible functional conditions. From the second half of centuryXX some authors defended the regionalization of the neonatal units and the transport of high risk pregnant for specialized centers in the perinatal assistance that possessed a neonatal intensive care unit. This project of regionalization is a cooperative program aiming at,through coordinate efforts of the rendering of service of health of one determined region, to intervene in the reproductive process, placing to the disposal of the pregnant and the newborn the level of medical care adjusted to their morbidity or risk of life. This proposal promoted an effective reduction of mortality and the sequels in long stated period. The sprouting of the neonatal intensive care units and the regional vision of the attendance to the newborn infant, overall to the premature infant, had allowed improving this attendance.
