ABSTRACT

Aims: This research investigated the Protective effect of methanolic extract of Hylocereus Polyrhizus fruits on carbon tetra chloride-induced hepatotoxicity in Swiss-albino rat. Place and Duration of Study: Department of Pharmacy, IIUC, Chittagong, Bangladesh and Functional Food Center, Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST), Gangneung Institute, Gangneung, Korea, between August 2011 to October, 2012. Methodology: Hepatoprotective potential was evaluated in carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) induced liver injured animal model using male albino rats. Carbon tetrachloride significantly elevated the serum levels of biochemical markers like ALT, AST, ALP, bilirubin, total protein, total cholesterol, triglycerides. Results: The methanolic extract of Hylocereus polyrhizus at a dose of 300 mg/kg body weight (p.o.) significantly protected the carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) induced liver toxicity in albino rat model. The activity of extract was also comparable to that of silymarin, a known hepatoprotective drug. Conclusion: The study suggests that oral intake of Hylocereus polyrhizus fruits extract enhances the defense status against liver injury.

ABSTRACT

The present study was designed to investigate the antioxidant and cytotoxic activity of the methanol, ethyl acetate and n-hexane extracts of bark of Aegle marmelos. The antioxidant properties was assessed by using 1, 1-diphenyl-2- picrylhydrazyl radical (DPPH) and Nitric Oxide (NO) scavenging capacity. The methanolic, ethyl acetate and n-hexane bark extracts of Aegle marmelos showed potential DPPH free radical scavenging activity having IC50 values of 37.056 μg/ml, 43.379 μg/ml and 66.180 μg/ml respectively compared with the IC50 value of Ascorbic acid 33.447 μg/ml. The Ethyl acetate extract of Aegle marmelos displayed excellent antioxidant activity in nitric oxide (NO) scavenging capacity assay with IC50 value of 28.377 μg/ml compared with the standard ascorbic acid, IC50 value of 22.175 μg/ml. The cytotoxicity assay was performed by applying brine shrimp lethality bioassay method. Among all the fractions, n-hexane extract shown profound cytotoxic activity with LC50 value of 4.482 μg/ml that was followed by methanolic and ethyl acetate having LC50 values of 5.278 and 5.278 μg/ml respectively in comparison with the standard vincristine sulfate with LC50 value of 3.364 μg/ml. The findings of the present study suggest that the extracts from Aegle marmelos bark have potential cytotoxicity and antioxidant effects.

ABSTRACT

The present study was carried out to evaluate the phytochemical properties, antimicrobial and cytotoxic as well as antioxidant activities of the chloroform extract.of Phyllanthus acidus fruit. Phytochemical screening showed confirmation of saponin, alkaloid, tannin and flavanoid. Antioxidant activity of PACF (Phyllanthus acidus chloroform extract) was assessed by using 1,1-diphenyl-2- picrylhydrazyl radical(DPPH),reducing power, cupric reducing antioxidant capacity and antioxidant activity increased in a concentration dependent manner. In DPPH radical scavenging assay IC50 value found 2745.86 μg mL−1 and compared to ascorbic acid with 13.37 μg mL−1. In brine shrimp lethality bioassay it showed good result with LC50 value 4.46 μg/ml. Antibacterial activity of plant extract was carried out using disc diffusion method with eleven pathogenic bacteria. This extract showed narrow spectrum activity aligned with Shigella dysenteriae, Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus and Sarcina lutea at concentration of 500 μg/disc in comparison with standard kanamycin. The range of zone of inhibition of chloroform extract was 0.5 to 2.5 mm.
