ABSTRACT

Aims: Dental implants have revolutionized the treatment modality for replacing missing teeth. The ability of implants to osseointegrate with the bone leads to its success. The problem is sometimes there is inadequate bone available for implant. If hygiene is not maintained, biofilms of bacteria can be formed around the dental implant. One approach to this problem has been development of bioactive surgical additives. Platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) appears as an alternative. There are various techniques of using PRF. These techniques need skill and practice to use PRF. Objective: To evaluate implant stability and flow of injectable PRF (i-PRF) of regular implant and modified innovative design implant. Materials and Methods: Thirty goat jaw bones were selected. Implants were placed in mandibular posterior region. Fifteen implants were placed using regular dental implant system (Group A) on the left side of jaw bone. The other 15 implants were placed using modified dental implant (Group B) on the right side of jaw bone. The body of these implants at middle has drainage vents to drain/flow the i-PRF-like dye. The dye was injected through regular and modified implants (DV-PIMS technique). Then the stability was checked with the help of Periotest. Cross section was taken 3 cm away from dental implant at the angle of mandible, to check the flow of i-PRF/platelet-rich plasma (PRP)-like dye. Results: Periotest evaluation showed a mean of 2.3 for implant Group B and a mean of 1.5 for implant Group A. The flow of i-PRF-like dye was seen in Group B, and Group A does not show any flow. Conclusion: There are various techniques of using PRF. These techniques need skill and practice to use PRF. This (DV-PIMS) method aims to explain new implant design that disperses an i-PRF solution from inside out. The screw section of the new implant is made of a reservoir running vertically down inside. That reservoir is filled with (injectable) PRF, and then a cover screw is placed. The solution will begin to slowly diffuse out, through the vents in implant, keeping biofilms from forming or avoiding at the screw–bone interface and accelerate healing process.

ABSTRACT

Background: Benzofuran compounds are shown to have pharmacological properties such as antiarrhythmic, antidepressant, antifungal, and antibacterial activity. Some studies conducted on them have revealed that they are having anti-inflammatory property also. Hence, we carried out this study to know whether the benzofuran compound 3, 4-dihydro 4-oxo-benzofuro (3, 2-d) pyrimidine-2-propionic acid has got anti-inflammatory activity against chronic inflammation. Methods: Wistar albino rats were treated with benzofuran compound under study and phenylbutazone in the dose of 100 mg\kg, orally with 2% gum acacia as suspending agent and the effects were observed in chronic experimental model of inflammation namely, cotton pellet induced granuloma model. Results: In the present study, it was shown that the benzofuran compound under study has got significant anti-inflammatory activity against the chronic model of inflammation. Conclusion: Our experiment shows that the benzofuran compound under study has got significant anti-inflammatory activity and may, as well become an additional anti-inflammatory drug if further studies are conducted in this direction involving human beings.

ABSTRACT

Objectives:Cosmetics are a multi-billion dollar industry today. The present study was designed with an objective to know the extent, purpose, type and awareness for cosmetic in people's daily life in Surat city. Materials & Methods:The study was conducted among 500 randomly selected people from the Surat city through convenience sampling. All the participants were interviewed personally, using structured questionnaire. The whole study was conducted from December, to March, 2008.Results;Around 73% of the population used cosmetics for protection purpose, while only 37% used it for attraction and 19% for fashion. Only 31% checked whether cosmetic they used were tested on animals or not. 89% of the people are concerned about the brands of the cosmetic and advertisement is an important source in the selection of the cosmetics. People still prefer ayurvedic products which comprise of 44% of the total population. Only 9% of the people use the expired products suggesting that people are aware that expired products cannot be used. 77% of the people are aware about the side effects of the cosmetics. Conclusion:Overall prevalence of cosmetic product use is increasing among both males and females. Though, associated increase in awareness regarding safe use of the same was not present widely. The use of other cosmetic services like skin specialist visits, contact lenses usage is also increasing slowly.
