ABSTRACT
Objetivo. Describir la asociación de la inseguridad alimentaria (IA) con la obesidad en adultos en México. Material y métodos. Diseño transversal en el que se incluyeron datos de hombres y mujeres recabados por la Encuesta Nacional de Salud y Nutrición de 2012 (Ensanut 2012). Se obtuvieron medidas de peso y talla y se calculó el índice de masa corporal. El nivel de inseguridad alimentaria del hogar se midió a través de la Escala Latinoamericana y Caribeña de Seguridad Alimentaria. Se ajustaron modelos de regresión lineal y logística. Resultados. Del total de la población, 70.6% tuvo algún nivel de IA: 42.6% IA leve, 17.7% IA moderada y 10.3% IA severa. Se encontró una probabilidad mayor de obesidad en la población con IA leve (RM: 1.66; IC95% 1.11-2.50) en la población adulta. En mujeres la probabilidad fue ligeramente mayor (RM: 1.78; IC95% 1.01-3.12). Conclusiones. La IA leve se asocia con la obesidad, particularmente en mujeres.
Objective. To describe the association of food insecurity (FI) and obesity in adults in Mexico. Materials and methods. Cross-sectional design. We included adults' data from the health and nutrition national survey 2012 (Ensanut 2012). Measures of weight and height were obtained and BMI was calculated. The level of household food insecurity was measured through the Latin American Scale of Food Security (ELCSA). Linear and logistic regression models were adjusted. Results. 70.6% of the population had some level of food insecurity, 42.6% mild insecurity, 17.7% moderate insecurity and 10.3% severe insecurity. Adults with mild FI had higher probability of obesity (OR: 1.66; 95%CI 1.11-2.50). Women were slightly more likely to be obese (OR: 1.78; 95%CI 1.01-3.12). Conclusions. Mild FI is associated with obesity, particularly among women.
