ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT We list the genera and species of chewing lice collected from birds by Helmut Sick, mainly from central Brazil, and particularly during the Roncador-Xingu Expedition, between 1943 and 1949. From the 123 samples studied, a wide variety of chewing louse genera and species were found, including 34 species as new records for Brazil, 37 species recorded from new Brazilian localities and 23 new host records. All material is deposited in the ectoparasite collection of the Museu de Zoologia da Universidade de São Paulo.

ABSTRACT

Twenty three louse-flies, from a total of 45 specimens of Pseudolynchia canariensis examined, were found parasitised by mites of the species Myialges anchora and Ornithocheyletia hallae. These mites are recorded for the first time for the State of Rio de Janeiro, in Brazil. Data on levels of infestation, as well as on the topographical distribution of the mites on the body of the louse-flies are briefly discussed.

ABSTRACT

A report of a louse sample identified as Colpocephalum cholibae Price & Beer by Oliveira et al. (2004), from the roadside hawk [Rupornis magnirostris (Gmelin)] in the state of São Paulo, Brazil, is regarded as a misidentification. A correction to the identity of the lice is given as Kurodaia (Kurodaia) fulvofasciata (Piaget). Key morphological differences between the genera Colpocephalum and Kurodaia are discussed, as well as possible reasons for the misidentification.

ABSTRACT
