ABSTRACT

Ureteral ectopia is a congenital disease that is characterized when one or both ureters are shown inserted outside their anatomic site, with the possible insertion in the uterus, bladder neck, the urethra or vagina due to abnormal differentiation of ducts mesonephrics and metanephrics. In males the insertion can also occur in the vas deferens and prostate. Urinary incontinence is the most common clinical sign associated with ectopic ureter. This report describes a case of unilateral extramural ectopic ureter in a dog of the Labrador Retriever breed at seven years old surgically corrected, and shows the importance of contrast radiographic examination and ultrasound.(AU)

ABSTRACT

After two different validation systolic blood pressure measurement methods (PAS), not invasive or indirect (oscillometric and doppler vascular) with invasive or direct (arterial catheterization - Gold Standard) in 12 anesthetized healthy cats of the same age group, not invasive methods were evaluated and compared in 24 healthy conscious cats, divided into four age groups. In each animal, we proceeded to measure the pressure by Doppler and oscillometric methods. The oscillometric method was the first to be performed, and, shortly thereafter, the doppler method. The values considered were obtained from averages from seven consecutive measurements for each method with an interval of thirty seconds between them. The first measurement and disparate measurements (range ˃ 20% PAS) obtained with obvious signs of stress and / or animal movement were discarded. Methods of oscillometric and doppler measurement, although statistically different averages were shown in all groups when compared, each group showed a significant high positive correlation, meaning that when a high value is obtained by a method, the same occurs with the other method, and vice versa. Clinically, the observed difference is not relevant since the mean difference values obtained by the two methods, in each group was lower than 1.1%.(AU)

ABSTRACT

For validation purposes, two different methods of measurement of systolic blood pressure (SBP), noninvasive or indirect (oscillometric and vascular doppler), direct or invasive (arterial catheterization - the gold standard) were evaluated and compared in 12 healthy anesthetized cats, varying between seven months to two years old. In each animal, we proceeded to the simultaneous noninvasive and invasive measurement of pressure. The oscillometric method was compared by means of seven consecutive measurements with an interval of 30 seconds between them, with the invasive method, and soon after, the doppler method was compared to the invasive method in the same way. It was concluded that the oscillometric method is statistically equal to the invasive method, whereas doppler differs from both. However, due to the strong positive correlation between doppler and invasive methods, it was possible to create a correction factor (linear regression) to determine the value of invasive pressure from the value obtained by the doppler method. To obtain more reliable figures, it is recommended to use this correction factor when the doppler method is used to measure SBP in anesthetized cats.

ABSTRACT

A retrospective study was carried out to evaluate echodopplercardiographic examinations of 854 dogs referred to the service of echocardiography. This work presents the frequency of the main cardiopathies according to breed, gender, and presence of echocardiographic alterations. The valvular acquired disease was the most common cardiopathy (76.7%), mainly occurring in male dogs of small breeds. The dilated cardiomyopathy was the second more diagnosed cardiovascular pathology (9.8%), and most frequently noticed in male dogs of large or giant breeds. However, Cocker Spaniel breed also presented a high prevalence for this cardiopathy.

ABSTRACT

Hemodialysis adequacy was studied in four groups with six horses in each: the treatments: group I animals were submitted to unilateral central venous catheter (control group); group II animals were submitted to unilateral central venous double lumen catheter and one six-hour session of hemodialysis; group III horses were submitted to unilateral central venous double lumen catheter and to two six-hour session of hemodialysis, and group IV horses were submitted to bilateral central venous mono lumen catheter and to one six-hour session of hemodialysis. Xilazine 10 percent (0.4mg/kg) and acepromazine 2 percent (0.008 mg/kg) were iv administrated for sedation. Two hollow fiber, 1.8m² low flux polyssulfone hemodialysis apparatus were used in a connected serie. The mean blood flux was 319.18±97.41ml/min with a dialisate flux of 500ml/min. Anticoagulation was performed with sodium heparin, 100UI/kg for priming at the dose of 53.86±18.61UI/kg/h. Anticoagulation monitoring was performed by clotting time, protrombin time, tromboplastin activated time, and platelet number. Decrease in platelet number was detected in groups submitted to dialysis. The best vascular access was performed with double lumen catheter and the hemodialysis may be used in equine practice, with high performance dialyze used in six- hour session.

ABSTRACT

Dopplerfluxometry of renal arteries has been used to estimate renal perfusion in humans. The aim of this study was to use Dopplerfluxometry technique to calculate the resistive index of main renal arteries in dogs, measuring their systolic and diastolic blood flow velocities. Twenty (10 males, 10 females), adult mongrel dogs, were used in this study. The dogs were submitted to Doppler sonographic evaluation of left and right main renal arteries. The systolic and diastolic blood flow velocities, expressed (in centimeters per second) as mean and standard deviation were 79.96± 8.82 and 28.86± 5.11 in the right main renal artery and 80.22± 6.99 and 29.62± 4.14 in the left main renal artery. The value of resistive index expressed as mean ± standard deviation was 0.64± 0.04 for the right main renal artery and 0.63± 0.028 in the left main renal artery.

ABSTRACT

The efficacy of keto acids and essential amino acids on a two-year-old female dog, Labrador, suffering from Leishmaniasis and acute renal failure was evaluated by clinical and laboratorial analyses based on urea and creatinine dosages. An improving in the animal general condition and an increasing in the appetite, activity and weight gain, were observed and favorably contributed to the treatment of the primary disease. Ketoanalogueswere oraly administered during 76 days and the levels of urea and creatinine remained within acceptable limits, even after this period of time. Ketoanaloguescontributed positively for the treatment of acute renal failure and appears to be an important alternative for the leishmaniasis treatment
