ABSTRACT

This study refers to a scientific research carried out with 128 patients who receives tratment in health institutions in Bogotá, Colombia, between July 1985 and May 1987. These patients showed symptoms of haemorrhage of the uper intestine and were intern patients at Hospital Simon Bolivar, Hospital Santa Clara, the Military Hospital and the Clínica El Bosque in Bogotá. The purpose of this study is to compare the findings regarding the evolution of the disease treated with the different agents that scientific literature considers as drugs for the control of bleedings of the uper intestine -said drugs are cimetidine, antiacids and traneaxanic acids. It was reported that of the 128 cases studied, 10 people were not included for this work, because they did not comply with the requierements. The average age of the group was 48 years and the etiological diagnosiswas mainly for duodenal ulcer being the most frequent reason for medical consultation: haematemesis. Evidence of re-bleeding was found in ten patients, nine of them were operated on, one patient refused to go under surgery. Of the patients that presented re-bleeding, nine were from the group of "cimetidine" and antiacids and one of seven from the group of "tranexamic acid". The rest of the patients(119 out of 128 and six out of seven) had a satisfactory recovery. No deseases were reported from either group that is from the group which received medical treatment and from the group that went under surgery
