ABSTRACT

Three sensitive, selective and reproducible stability-indicating methods are presented for determination of nitazoxanide (NTZ),a new anti-protozoal drug,in presence of its degradation products.Method A utilizes the first derivative of ratio spectra spectrophotometry by measurement of the amplitude at 364.4 nm using one of the degradation products as a divisor.Method B is a chemometric-assisted spectrophotometry, where principal component regression (PCR) and partial least squares (PLS) were applied. These two approaches were successfully applied to quantify NTZ in presence of degradation products using the information included in the absorption spectra in the range 260-360 nm.Method C is based on the separation of NTZ from its degradation products followed by densitometric measurement of the bands at 254 nm.The separation was carried out on silica gel 60F254,using chloroform-methanol-ammonia solution-glacial acetic acid (95∶5∶1∶1 by volume,pH=5.80) as a developing system. These methods are suitable as stability-indicating methods for the determination of NTZ in presence of its degradation products either in bulk powder or in pharmaceutical formulations.Statistical analysis of the results has been carried out revealing high accuracy and good precision.

ABSTRACT

The present study is a comprehensive investigation of the attitude toward psychiatry from Quaid-e-Azam Medical College, Bahawalpur [Pakistan]. A total of 538 students were studied using a 50-item Scale [ATP 30]. Responses of the students were collected from classes of 1st year and 4th year and a comparison was calculated on year wise and gender wise basis. The results are presented and discussed

ABSTRACT

To determine the value of D-Dimers assay in the diagnosis of Pulmonary Embolism [PE] at Armed Forces Institute of Pathology, Rawalpindi, Pakistan from January to November 2000. Forty three consecutive patients clinically suspected of suffering from pulmonary embolism and referred to Armed Forces Institute of Pathology for Ventilation-Perfusion scan of lungs were inducted in the study. A detailed history was taken and clinical examination was performed. All patients were then subjected to Perfusion and/or Ventilation scan, which was taken as the standard for the diagnosis of PE. Blood samples were collected from all patients in trisodium citrate. Platelet poor plasma obtained from the samples was tested for D-Dimers semi-quantitatively using latex agglutination method. Out of 43 patients 14[32.6%] had completely normal ventilation-perfusion scan hence the diagnosis of PE was excluded. In 6 [13.9%] patients the results were considered indeterminate. Abnormalities suggestive of pulmonary embolism were detected in 23 [53.5%] patients. D-Dimers were less than the cut off value of 500 ng/ml in 19 [44.2%] patients, whereas in 24 [55.8%] the levels were more than 500 ng/ml. When compared with the results of ventilation-perfusion scan the sensitivity of D-Dimers was 91.3% and specificity was 100%. Positive predictive value of the test was 100% whereas negative predictive value was 87.5%. D-Dimers assay combined with high clinical evidence is a cost effective, readily available test which can safely exclude the diagnosis of pulmonary embolism in majority of the cases

ABSTRACT

A cross sectional study was carried out to evaluate the level of physical fitness of new recruits of the central security forces and to study the effect of training and other various ecological factors on the level of their physical fitness. Seven hundred and twenty individuals were selected from the training camp of central security forces at Quesna district. Menoufia Governorate, to be the subjects of this study. The results showed that the training program had a significant positive effect on the physical fitness response and pulmonary function measurements of recruits. Smoking habits, residence. Hb concentration and bilharzial infection were important factors affecting response to training
