ABSTRACT

Objective:To evaluate the efficacy of botulinum toxin A injection therapy with ultrasound-guided for benign masseter hypertrophy. Methods:Twenty cases (40 sides) of masseter hypertrophy were injected with botulinum toxin A, among which 10 cases were taken as experimental group and the other 10 cases as control group. The experimental group had preoperative ultrasound examination to measure the thickness of masseter, and use ultrasound-guided precise injection during the operation, and then ultrasound recheck to measure the postoperative masseter thickness; The other 10 cases of control group adopt traditional 3-point injection method. Results:The masseter thickness of the two groups at different period of times after treatment was decreased ( P<0.001), the most obviously decrease happened 4-12 weeks after injection. The mean reduction was 26.8% at 4 weeks and 28.4% at 12 weeks after injection. Masseter muscle thickness recovered by 22% at 24 weeks and by 20% at 36 weeks. The average follow-up was 6.0±2.4 months with no serious complications occurred. In the control group, there was a partial masseter bulge in one case. The satisfactory rate of the patients in the experimental group was higher than that of the control group. Conclusions:Botulinum toxin A injection therapy with ultrasound-guided for benign masseter hypertrophy is an effective treatment, which is more accurate and effective than the traditional injection method.

ABSTRACT

Objective To investigate the effect and mechanism of electroacupuncture at acupoints on radiation-induced hippocampal neuronal apoptosis in C57 mice. Methods Forty one-month-old C 57/6J mice were equally and randomly divided into control group, model group(8 Gy), acupoint-electroacupuncture group, and non-acupoint-electroacupuncture group. In the acupoint-electroacupuncture group, mice received electroacupuncture intervention at Baihui, Fengfu, and Shenshu points. The novel object recognition test was used to evaluate the cognitive, learning, and memory abilities in mice. Immunohistochemistry was used to determine the levels of caspase-3 and apoptosis-inducing factor(AIF). TUNEL assay was used to detect DNA breaks. The data were analyzed by one-way analysis of variance and the Tukey's multiple comparison. Results Compared with the control group, the model group had a significantly reduced recognition index(P= 0.040);compared with the model group, the acupoint-electroacupuncture group had a significantly increased recognition index(P=0.043),shown by significantly longer time spent exploring novel objects(P=0.035).According to the results of immunohistochemistry, the model group had significantly higher apoptosis rate and levels of caspase-3 and AIF in hippocampal neurons than the control group(P= 0.002, 0.003, 0.023), while the acupoint-electroacupuncture group had significantly lower apoptosis rate and levels of caspase-3 and AIF in hippocampal neurons than the model group(P=0.027, 0.005, 0.004). Conclusions Radiation can induce hippocampal neuronal apoptosis and damage cognitive function in mice. Electroacupuncture intervention can, to some degree, reduce above damages.

ABSTRACT

Objective To explore the effects of different courses of electro-acupuncture at Baihui,Fengfu, and Shenshu of both sides on the behavior of mice exposed to radiation. Methods Fifty C57BL/6Jmice 30 days old were randomly and equally divided into control group, model group (exposure to radiation of 8 Gy),electro-acupuncture group 1 (1 week of treatment),electro-acupuncture group 2 (2 weeks of treatment),and electro-acupuncture group 3 (3 weeks of treatment). The mouse model of radiation-induced brain injury was established by exposure to radiation of 8 Gy and treated with electro-acupuncture.The open field test and Morris water maze test were used to evaluate the cognitive function and spatial learning and memory, respectively.Group t-test difference. Results In the open field test, the model group had significantly fewer vertical or horizontal movements than the control group (P=0.032,0.029,0.028),while the electro-acupuncture groups 2 and 3 had significantly more vertical or horizontal movements than the model group (P=0.001,0.017,0.000).In the Morris water maze test, compared with the control group, the model group had significantly longer latency,a significantly lower frequency of entry into the goal box,and significantly shortened residence time, indicating substantially worse performance of spatial learning and memory (P=0.023,0.001,0.001).Compared with the model group, the electro-acupuncture groups 2 and 3 had significantly shortened latency,a significantly higher frequency of entry into the goal box,and significantly longer residence time (P=0.046,0.017,0.049,0.007,0.031,0.009).Conclusions Different courses of electro-acupuncture treatment at Baihui,Fengfu, and Shenshu of both sides can substantially improve the cognitive function and spatial learning and memory in mice exposed to radiation.Particularly,2 and 3 weeks of electro-acupuncture treatment give the best outcomes.

ABSTRACT

<p><b>BACKGROUND</b>The protective effects of transient limb ischemia (TLI) induced by several cycles of intermittent pressure cuff inflation and deflation for a period have been widely investigated, however the reliability of this protocol has not been clearly verified. Our study aimed to investigate the reliability of pressure cuff induced TLI in conscious rabbits.</p><p><b>METHODS</b>Eight New Zealand rabbits were subjected to TLI without anesthesia. TLI consisted of 3 cycles of ischemia and reperfusion induced by inflating the cuff placed on the left lower limb to 200 mmHg for 5 minutes followed by deflating the cuff for 5 minutes. Skin color, pulse oxygen saturation (SpO2), pulse rate (PR), plethysmogram waveform (Pleth), and ultrasound detection of the blood flow in the extremity distal to the ischemic segment were observed to confirm ischemia and reperfusion during TLI. The frequency of severe limb movement during TLI was also recorded to assess the amenability of this protocol in conscious rabbits.</p><p><b>RESULTS</b>The skin color of the extremity distal to the ischemic segment changed from bright red to dark purple after inflating the cuff to 200 mmHg, and returned to normal after cuff deflation. Pleth, PR and SpO2 disappeared during ischemia and restored during reperfusion in the monitor. Blood flow of the left posterior tibial artery was completely blocked by a pressure of 200 mmHg during ischemia, and recovered immediately after cuff deflation. The frequency of severe limb movement in supine position was higher than that in prone position (P < 0.05), but there was no severe limb movement that could result in disturbance to ischemia when the rabbits were placed in prone position.</p><p><b>CONCLUSION</b>Pressure cuff inflating to 200 mmHg for 5 minutes and deflating for 5 minutes is a reliable regimen to induce TLI in conscious rabbits.</p>

ABSTRACT

Objective To discuss the confirmed value of HCV Different Region ELISA KIT (ANTI-HCV-C, ANTI-HCV-NS3, ANTI-HCV-NS4, ANTI-HCV-NS5) to anti-HCV CO sample. Methods To inspect the general antibody of anti-HCV with ELISA, which is commonly used in clinic. The serum was separated from the suspicious samples, whose results were equal to S/CO or in the state of grey district ( CO?10%), and stored in the refrigerator in -29℃ low temperature and concenratedly inspected by the HCV Different Region ELISA KIT on the Triturus, the enayme immuno-reactions automatic analyzer. We totally collected 44 suspicious samples, among which there were 24 anti-HCV positive,20 anti-HCV CO?10% negative. Meanwhile we collected 30 samples whose S/CO of general antiboby was more than 5.0 and 20 ones which were healthy and could be compared with. Results In the 44 suspicious cases, whose S/CO was in the state of grey disrtict (CO?10%), the HCV Different Region Kit confirmed positive was 22.7% (10/44),suspicious 6.8% (3/44), negative 70.5 % (31/44).The false positive rate of positive anti-HCV CO?10% was 54.2%(13/24) and the false negative rate of negative anti-HCV CO?10% was 5.0%(1/20). In the 30 cases, whose S/CO of general antibody was more than 5.0,the HCV Different Region Kit confirmed positive was 80.0%(24/30),suspicious 13.3%(4/30), negative 67%(2/30). In 20 cases, which were from healthy people, the HCV Different Region Kit confirmed totally negative. Conclusion Using HCV Different Region Kit is a better evidence laboratory, especially for the uncertain samples, that is,it is very important for the "grey district"(CO?10%) samples to be further confirmed. It can reduce the false positive and false negative result which may emerge when anti HCV EIA inspects the dangerous groups and improve the accuracy of clinical HCV diagnosis. To blood station, it has certain practical value for the blood not only can be safely used, but also avoided wasting. The operation is simple and convenient, easily be spread and applied.

ABSTRACT

Objective To study the false positive of enzyme linked immunoinhibition continuous assays to detect CK-MB in clinic,to reasonably explain the results of detection and to get correctly the project of solving. Methods A total of 125 serum specimen of non-myocardial infarction patients were detected by enzyme linked immunoinhibition continuous assays,in retrospective study. To analyze the factors which made the CK-MB enzymatic activity unit pseudo-rising.Results Total CK-MB enzymatic activity was low in 86 serum specimen of adult patients with non-myocardial infarction, but in the patients with tumor, encephalic infarction and allergic disorder the pseudo-positive ratio of the CK-MB enzymatic activity was high. There were 53 cases, in which CK-MB activity accounted for 6%-21% enzymatic activity of CK, and 6 cases accounted for more than 38% in 59 cases in which the CK-MB activity was more than 5% enzymatic activity of CK.In 38 neonate cases, the enzymatic activity of CK ranged from 145U/L to 1974U/L,In 1 case of neonatal respiratory distress syndrome CK-MB activity accounted for more than 90% enzymatic activity of CK.Another haemolytic sample led to false positive result. Conclusion The phenomenon of enzymatic activity rising in the serum specimen of non-myocardial infarction patients may be caused by the factors of lots CK, CK-BB and AK in serum. Those materials maybe have effects on the action between McAb and M subunit of the CK.Some non-inhibit CK-M and the M subunit with B subunit may participate the enzymatic activity together.Because of the shortcoming of method, the single assay should not be taken as the diagnostic basis.
