ABSTRACT
This study was conducted to estimate the prevalence of head lice in primary school children in Chiangyuen district and to compare the efficacy of a 3 hour versus a 12 hour application of 1% gamma benzene hexachloride (1% lindane). Two schools were selected at random. Children who were infested with head lice received a 12 hour application of 1% lindane in the first school, while those in the second group received a 3 hour application. While none of the boys examined were infested, there were 39 (41.1%) and 41 (44.1%) female children with pediculosis capitis in two schools, respectively. Thirty-seven out of 38 and 23 out of 41 infections were cured when the drug was applied for 12 and 3 hours, respectively. This study showed that there is still a high prevalence of pediculosis in female school children and that 3 hour applications of lindane are less effective (P \< 0.05) in curing head lice infestations than 12 hour applications.
ABSTRACT
The agar plate method is a new and highly sensitive technique for diagnosis strongyloidiasis. We detected strongyloidiasis from 331 villagers in Khon Kaen province by using this technique. There were 82 cases (24.77%) positive for Strongyloides stercoralis. They were administered albendazole 400 mg orally once a day for 3 consecutive days. Only 51 cases submitted stools for re - examination two weeks after treatment. There were 38 cases cured (74.51%) This study showed that strongyloidiasis is still a high cause of infection in Khon Kaen and the dosage of 400 mg orally once a day for 3 consecutive days of albendazole showed effective treatment.
ABSTRACT
This study was conducted to estimate the prevalence of head lice in primary school children and to compare the efficacy of 25% benzyl benzoate versus 1% gamma benzene hexachloride (1% lindane). The prevalence rate was 31.58% (66 out of 209). Eighteen out of 24 (75%) were cured when they were treated by 25% benzyl benzoate. Twenty-six out of thirty (86.67%) were cured when they were treated by 1% lindane. There was no statistical significant difference between the two pesticides for treatment head lice (P\>0.05, Chi-square test). The doctors can choose one of the two pesticides for treatment head lice.
