ABSTRACT

Objective To observe the effect of Yiaikang capsules on viral load, immunologic function and quality of life of patients with human immunodeficiency virus infection and acquired immune deficiency syndrome (HIV/AIDS). Methods A prospective randomized controlled clinical study was conducted, 118 patients with HIV/AIDS admitted to Department of Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine of Qinghai Fourth People's Hospital from July 2015 to February 2017 were enrolled, and they were divided into two groups by random digital table method, 59 cases in each group. The control group received highly active anti-retroviral therapy (HAART); while the treatment in combined Chinese and western medicine group was additionally given Yiaikang capsules on the basis of the therapy in control group, 5 capsules (0.5 g per grain,) once and 3 times a day for 12 months. The differences of World Health Organization HIV quality of life scale (WHOQOL HIV-BREF) score, CD4+, CD8+T-lymphocyte and viral load levels were compared between the two groups. Results After treatment for 12 months, the results of WHOQOL HIV-BREF scores in two groups were reduced significantly compared with those before treatment (P < 0.05), and the degree of decrease of WHOQOL HIV-BREF score in combined Chinese and western medicine group was slower than that in control group (82.57±8.76 vs. 70.53±9.45, P < 0.05). The CD4+, CD8+levels in control group after treatment were of no significant change compared with those before treatment (P > 0.05), but the viral load level was decreased significantly after treatment compared with that before treatment (log/mL: 3.57±0.82 vs. 3.89±1.32, P < 0.05); the CD4+in combined Chinese and western medicine group after treatment was obviously higher compared with that before treatment (number/μL: 413.67±187.39 vs. 376.65±206.51), the viral load level was markedly lowered compared with that before treatment (log/mL: 3.14±0.76 vs. 3.81±1.27) and the level of CD4+was significantly higher in combined Chinese and western medicine group than that in control group (413.67±187.39 vs. 382.72±194.82), viral load level in combined Chinese and western medicine group was siginificantly lower that in the control group (3.14±0.76 vs. 3.57±0.82, P < 0.05), but the number of CD8+in two groups after treatment was of no significant change (P > 0.05). Conclusion Yiaikang capsules possibly may elevate the number of CD4+T-lymphocytes and decrease the level of viral load to improve the quality of life in patients with HIV/AIDS.

ABSTRACT

Donguibogam was introduced from traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) instead of the local representa-tive work of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK). It is also the concrete manifestation of theories of different schools of doctors according to Dr. Xu Jun's medical thoughts. In this paper, from Dr. Xu's advocacy to Taoism and the concept of aftercare spirit, the exploration was made on health cultivation for different body constitu-tions. According to the health cultivation effects of the medicinals and edible food, the focus was made on the sys-tematic collation and induction of more than 1 400 kinds of herbs contained in the soup liquid from papers in three volumes. The medicinals were divided into eight categories, which were benefiting qi, nourishing yin, tonifying yang, clearing heat and promoting dieresis, drying dampness and resolving phlegm, promoting blood circulation for remov-ing blood stasis, dispersing stagnated liver qi, nourishing blood for hemostasis. Donguibogam specified the health cultivation concept from the correspondence between the body constitution and the medicinal performance. It has a certain guiding significance to the current health cultivation.

ABSTRACT

AIM: To study the expression of laminin and survivin in primary gallbladder carcinoma(PGC),and their correlation with clinicopathologic characteristics of PGC.METHODS: Forty-nine specimens with PGC,21 with cholecystoadenoma and 13 with chronic cholecystitis were included in this study.Laminin and survivin expression in gallbladder tissues were detected by immunohistochemistry. The relationship between laminin or survivin expression and clinico-pathologic data were also analyzed.RESULTS: An intact basement membrane(BM) with well-delineated,smooth and continuous line-like laminin staining was identified in the tissues from chronic cholecystitis, adenoma of gallbladder and gallbladder carcinoma in situ.Submucosal BM,which was interrupted in PGC specimens in NevinⅡstage, was almost lost in tumor tissues in Nevin Ⅲ,Ⅳ and Ⅴ stage.Meanwhile,a distinguishing feature of the tumor tissue was broken or discontinuous line-like laminin staining in the matrix to tumor cells. These lines were detected to be weak,or even entirely absent in some neoplastic tissue sections.Sometimes,a faint cytoplasmic staining of laminin was also found in tumor tissues as classified to Nevin Ⅲ,Ⅳ and Ⅴ stage.Expression of survivin in PGC tissues was significantly higher than that in adenoma of gallbladder and chronic cholecystitis. However, survivin expressions had no specificity and positive predictive value for cell differentiation and grade as well as clinic stage of PGC by using statistical analyses.Furthermore,no correlation was confirmed between the staining features of laminin and survivin expression.CONCLUSION: Laminin expression is strongly associated with the malignancy and invasiveness of PGC,and survivin might play an important synergistic role in the development of PGC.

ABSTRACT

Aim To investigate the effect of insulin glargine and human insulin on proliferation of a human breast cancer cell line MDA-MB-231 and the role of ERK in the process. Methods MDA-MB-231 cells were incubated with insulin glargine and human insulin at different concentrations and for different time courses.A specific ERK1/2 inhibitor,PD98059,was used either alone or in combination with insulin glargine or human insulin to test the involvement of ERK pathway in cell growth.Cell proliferation was evaluated using cell counting kit-8 reagents.Cell cycle distribution was analyzed by flow cytometry. Results Both insulin glargine and human insulin dose-dependently enhanced MDA-MB-231 cell proliferation at the concentrations from 1 to 100 IU?L-1 after treatment for 96 h.At the concentration of 10 IU?L-1,both drugs promoted cell growth at 48,72,and 96 h.The percentage of S+G2/M cells was significantly increased in both insulin glargine and human insulin treated groups as compared to untreated controls. No significant difference was observed between insulin glargine and human insulin in their effects on cell proliferation and cell cycle distribution.Cell proliferation was significantly inhibited by PD98059.However,in the presence of PD98059,both drugs still promoted cell proliferation significantly as compared to untreated controls. Conclusions Insulin galrgine and human insulin similarly promote proliferation of MDA-MB-231 cells independent of ERK activation.
