ABSTRACT

Coccidiosis in chickens is an intestinal parasitic disease caused by protozoan parasites named Eimeria spp. In some Eimeria infections, intestinal lymphocytes are known to highly express chicken NK-lysin (cNK-lysin), an antimicrobial peptide with anticoccidial activity. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the expression of cNK-lysin in E. necatrix-infected chickens and its role in E. necatrix infection. The expression of cNK-lysin transcript was significantly increased in E. necatrix sporozoites-treated lymphocytes. In E. necatrix infection, cNK-lysin transcript was induced in intestinal lymphocytes but not in the spleen. The recombinant cNK-lysin exhibited anticoccidial activity against E. necatrix sporozoites as well as immunomodulatory activity on macrophages by inducing proinflammatory cytokines. These results indicated that E. necatrix infection induces high local expression of cNK-lysin and the secreted cNK-lysin helps protect coccidiosis.

ABSTRACT

Avian coccidiosis has a major economic impact on the poultry industry, it is caused by 7 species of Eimeria, and has been primarily controlled using chemotherapeutic agents. Due to the emergence of drug-resistant strains, alternative control strategies are needed. We assessed anticoccidial effects of berberine-based diets in broiler chickens following oral infection with 5 Eimeria species (E. acervulina, E. maxima, E. tenella, E. mitis, and E. praecox). When 0.2% berberine, a concentration that does not affect weight gain, was added to the diet, the 4 groups infected with E. acervulina, E. tenella, E. mitis, or E. praecox showed significant reductions in fecal oocyst shedding (P<0.05) compared to their respective infected and untreated controls. In chickens treated 0.5% berberine instead of 0.2% and infected with E. maxima, fecal oocyst production was significantly reduced, but body weight deceased, indicating that berberine treatment was not useful for E. maxima infection. Taken together, these results illustrate the applicability of berberine for prophylactic use to control most Eimeria infections except E. maxima. Further studies on the mechanisms underlying the differences in anticoccidial susceptibility to berberine, particularly E. maxima, are remained.

ABSTRACT

Purpose@#The aim of this article was to highlight various terminologies and methods of calculation of minimal clinically important difference (MCID) and summarize MCID values of frequently used patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) evaluating total knee arthroplasty (TKA). @*Materials and methods@#PubMed and EMBASE databases were searched through May 2019. Of 71 articles identified, 18 articles matched and underwent a comprehensive analysis for terminologies used to indicate clinical significance, method of calculation, and reported MCID values. @*Results@#MCID was the most common terminology (67% studies) and anchor-based methods were most commonly employed (67% studies) to calculate it. The analytical methods used to calculate and the estimated values of MCID for clinical use are highly variable. MCID values reported for WOMAC scores are 20.5 to 36.0, 17.6 to 33.0 and 12.9 to 25.0 for pain, function and stiffness sub-scales, respectively, and 4.7 to 10.0 for OKS. @*Conclusion@#There was lack of standardization in the methodology employed to calculate MCID in the available studies. MCID values reported in this review could be used for patients undergoing TKA, although caution is advised in their interpretation and application.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: The study compared the intelligence test profiles of Tourette's Disorder (TD), attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and TD with ADHD (TD+ADHD) groups. METHODS: The Korean Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children-third edition (K-WISC-III) and Korean Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children-fourth edition (K-WISC-IV) were administered to 13 children and adolescents with TD, 17 children and adolescents with ADHD, and 15 children and adolescents with TD+ADHD. Each parameter was compared among the groups using the Kruskal-Wallis test. RESULTS: The mean scores of the freedom from distractibility/working memory index (FD/WMI) and the digit span and arithmetic subtests of the TD+ADHD group were significantly lower than those of the TD group. CONCLUSION: According to the intelligence test results, the comorbid ADHD+TD group showed a significant decrease in working memory compared to the TD group. These findings are similar to those of previous research on cognitive functions and suggest that the TD+ADHD comorbid and TD alone groups exhibit different endophenotypes. The results also imply that WISC-III and WISC-IV, the most commonly used intelligence tests clinically, are effective in evaluating cognitive functions such as attention. Further research is required to confirm these results.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: We compared a transperineal ligation model and a transperitoneal ligation model in male rats to determine which animal model of overactive bladder (OAB) was more useful based on cystometrography, estimations of oxidative stress, and measurements of pro-inflammatory cytokine levels. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Male rats were randomly divided into three groups (n=15 in each): the control group, the transperineal ligation group, and the transperitoneal ligation group. Four weeks after the ligation procedure, cystometrography was performed and oxidative stress, pro-inflammatory cytokine levels, and histologic changes were evaluated. Oxidative stress was assessed by measuring 8-hydroxy-20-deoxyguanosine and superoxide dismutase, and pro-inflammatory cytokine activity was investigated by measuring levels of interleukin (IL)-6, IL-8, and tumor necrosis factor-α. RESULTS: The transperineal model led to results similar to those observed for the transperitoneal model, namely (1) increased voiding frequency and reductions in the non-voiding contraction interval and the maximal vesical pressure, (2) increased levels of oxidative stress markers, (3) increased pro-inflammatory cytokine levels, and (4) fibrotic changes in the bladder tissue. CONCLUSIONS: We suggest that the transperineal procedure can be used as an alternative OAB model in male rats.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to investigate the anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidative effects of a multi-herbal formula known as WSY-1075 in the treatment of chronic bacterial prostatitis in a rat model. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Experimental chronic bacterial prostatitis was induced in 32 Wistar rats by instillation of a bacterial suspension (Escherichia coli, 10⁸ colony-forming units [CFU]/mL) into the prostatic urethra. After the induction of prostatitis, the rats were randomly divided into one of 4 treatment groups: control (n=8), ciprofloxacin (n=8), WSY-1075 (400 mg/kg) (n=8), and WSY-1075 (400 mg/kg)+ciprofloxacin (n=8). After 4 weeks of treatment, microbiological data from prostate tissue cultures, level of prostatic pro-inflammatory cytokines (tumor necrosis factor-α [TNF-α], interleukin [IL]-6, and IL-8), anti-oxidant effects (superoxide dismutase [SOD]), and histological findings were noted. RESULTS: The WSY-1075, ciprofloxacin, and WSY-1075+ciprofloxacin groups showed fewer CFUs in prostate tissue cultures than the control group. The WSY-1075, ciprofloxacin and WSY-1075+ciprofloxacin groups showed statistically significantly lower levels of the pro-inflammatory cytokines TNF-α, IL-6, and IL-8 than the control group. SOD levels in the WSY-1075, ciprofloxacin and WSY-1075+ciprofloxacin groups were significantly higher than in the control group. CONCLUSIONS: This study found that WSY-1075 had anti-microbial effects, anti-inflammatory effects, and anti-oxidative effects in a chronic bacterial prostatitis rat model. We expect the WSY-1075 may be useful for the clinical treatment of chronic bacterial prostatitis.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: The olecranon osteotomy in intra-articular comminuted distal humerus fractures is a suggested technique for excellent exposure of articular fractures. However, complications including delayed union, nonunion of osteotomy site have been reported. Authors have applied predrilling for cannulated screw before osteotomy for achievement of rapid and accurate reposition of separation part and added wire fixation for secure stability. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the efficacy of this fixation procedure following the olecranon osteotomy during the internal fixation of intra-articular fracture of the distal humerus. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study retrospectively analyzed 14 cases (9 women and 5 men) of intra-articular distal humerus fractures in which the olecranon osteotomy was applied. The mean age of patients was 53.4 years (range, 25 to 83 years), and the average follow-up period was 15.9 months. Eleven cases were classified as AO 13-C3, and the other 3 cases were AO 13-C2. Reduction accuracy, union period of osteotomy site on follow-up radiographs and postoperative complications related to olecranon osteotomy were evaluated. RESULTS: All osteotomized parts showed no position change and solid union with normal alignment at the last follow-up. The mean period of bony union was 3.5 months (range, 2 to 5 months). There were no complications related to olecranon osteotomy except one case of non-displaced fracture of the proximal ulnar shaft at the level of cannulated screw tip caused by forceful passive physical therapy. It was managed by conservative treatment without further problem. CONCLUSION: Predrilled cannulated screw and wire fixation following the olecranon osteotomy during internal fixation of intra-articular comminuted distal humerus fractures showed satisfactory results in the union of osteotomy site and it could be a recommendable procedure when fractures require olecranon osteotomy.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study is to compare changes in voiding pattern after midurethral sling surgery (MUS) between the stress urinary incontinence (SUI) group and the overactive bladder (OAB)+SUI group. MATERIALS AND METHODS: From January 2008 to February 2011, a retrospective survey was conducted of 225 female patients who had been diagnosed with SUI and undergone MUS. The subjects were divided into the SUI group and the OAB+SUI group. Changes in the overactive bladder symptom score (OABSS) and American Urological Association-Symptom Index (AUA-SI) before and three months after the MUS were compared. RESULTS: Of the 225 patients, 165 patients (73.3%) were classified as SUI group, and 60 patients (26.7%) were classified as OAB+SUI group. The mean age of the subjects was 54.7 years (range, 31-80 years), and the mean age of patients was 53.9 years (range, 34-80 years), and 56.8 years (range, 31-78 years) in the SUI group and OAB+SUI group. In SUI group, voiding symptom and storage symptom among the AUA-SI were significantly increased (p<0.05). OABSS were slight increased, but was statistically insignificant (p=0.847). In OAB+SUI group, voiding symptom score and OABSS showed a significant increase (p<0.05), but storage symptom score showed an insignificant increase (p=0.790). CONCLUSIONS: OAB may occur in approximately 18% of SUI patients who undergo MUS surgery, and voiding dysfunctions with deteriorated voiding symptom and storage symptom may also occur. The deteriorated OAB was shown in 45% of SUI patients with OAB after the surgery.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: Soft tissue defect on foot and ankle is vulnerable and requires a thin flap for improvement of aesthetic and functional results. Lateral supramalleolar flap is a simple and fast procedure, which can preserve and supply reliable constant blood flow, and causes fewer donor site complications. The authors reviewed our cases and report the clinical results. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Ten cases of soft tissue defects on the lower leg, around the ankle were treated with lateral supramalleolar flap. There were seven males and three females with a mean age of 54.8 years. The mean size of flaps was 5.9x6.3 cm and the mean follow-up period was 23 months. Flap survival and postoperative complications were evaluated. RESULTS: Nine flaps survived completely without loss of flap. There was one case of partial wound dehiscence requiring debridement and repair, and another case of necrotic flap change requiring partial bone resection and closure. All patients were capable of weight bearing ambulation at the last follow up. CONCLUSION: The authors suggest that the lateral supramalleolar flap could be a useful option for treatment of soft tissue defect around the ankle joint.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: We report clinical and radiographic outcomes after internal fixation of intraarticular volar fractures of the middle phalanx base. METHODS: A retrospective review was conducted on 11 patients who had been treated with miniplate or screw for acute proximal interphalangeal joint fracture, after adjusting for the cases excluding severe comminuted or open fractures. The participants consisted of 9 males and 2 females, with average age of 43.7 years and with average follow-up period of 15.2 months. Bony union, change of articular side were examined through radiographs, and functional results were evaluated by means of the total active range of motion (TAM) and the disabilities of the arm, shoulder, and hand (DASH). RESULTS: Of 11 cases of a finger fracture, 7 cases were fixed by miniplate with screws and 4 cases by screws alone. At the final follow-up retrospection, the average range of proximal interphalangeal joint motion was 95degrees, the average TAM was 243.2degrees, and the average DASH score was 7.4. Average 2.8 months was spent from the finger fracture to bony union. There was no case of degenerative change. CONCLUSION: Open reduction and internal fixation with screws for acute intraarticular fractures of the middle phalanx base showed favorable results in our study and it could be one of recommendable treatment options.

ABSTRACT

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: The improvement in oral function and comfort from the dental implant appears to depend on the particular type of implant support used with the denture. The number and positioning of implants have an influence on the force transfer and subsequent stress distribution around implants. Nevertheless, a quantitative comparison has not been made between the types of implant prosthesis used with different materials compared to conventional complete denture. PURPOSE: The objective of this study is to assess the masticatory performance, bite force and impact of two different type of implant supported prostheses on oral health-related quality of life compared to conventional complete denture with GOHAI, validated oral-specific health status measures, the sieving method, and the Prescale Dental System. MATERIAL AND METHODS: From the years 1999 to 2006, a total of 30 completely edentulous patients in a single arch were selected from the Yonsei University Dental Hospital, Department of Prosthodontics and Implant Clinic in Seoul, S. Korea. Patients were divided into 3 groups of 10 each. Group HR was restored with fixed-detachable hybrid prostheses with resin teeth. Group FP had fixed dentures with porcelain teeth while Group CD had a complete denture. The masticatory performance was compared between 3 groups. RESULTS: The results showed a significant improvement in oral health-related quality of life with dental implants compared to a conventional denture in GOHAI comparison. Overall, implant prostheses showed a higher masticatory performance (S50) and maximum bite force compared with conventional dentures (P .05). CONCLUSION: Within the limitation of this study, the numbers of implant and material of implant prostheses does not appear to impact patient satisfaction, masticatory performance or bite force.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND : Treatment of a severe burn injury with total parenteral nutrition can produce bacterial translocation to mesenteric lymph nodes through the intestinal mucosa due to permeability changes. Early enteral feeding will help to restore the mucosal barrier function. Certain nutrients may have a beneficial effect on bacterial translocation and gut immunity. METHODS : We choose the glutamine and korean cabbage as dietary factors to study the beneficial effect on gut immunity of feeding different dietary formulations of low amino acid concentrated total parenteral nutritional fluids in burned rats. Forty-eight (48) male pathogen-free Sprague-Dowley rats were allocated in 4 groups(group A, control chow diet and water ad libitum; group B, oral TPN diet; group C, oral TPN diet supplemented with 2% glutamine; and group D, oral TPN diet supplemented with korean cabbage). All groups, except control group A, recieved 40% total body surface area, full-thickness burn injury. Group A received sham burn injury. Bacterial translocation to mesenteric lymph nodes, the cecal bacterial population level, the intestinal mucosal protein content, and the total IgA of the intestinal luminal washing fluid were measured and light-microscope changes of the small intestine were observed in the rats on the 4th and the 7th days after corresponding diet intake. RESULTS : The incidence of bacterial translocation in the oral TPN diet group B was reduced signifi cantly compared with control group A and glutamine supplemented group C on 4th day postburn (p< 0.05) The cecal bacterial population level of control group A showed significant lower values, compared with the other groups, in total aerobic (on 4th day p<0.01, on 7th day p<0.01) and gram-negative enterics species (on 4th day p<0.01, on 7th day p<0.05). The mucosal protein amount per cm of length of intestine was decreased slightly in groups B, C, and D, compared with the control group A, but without statistical significance, on the 7th day postburn. The total (serum and secretary) IgA per cm of length of intestine was increased significantly in the glutamine-supplemented group C and the cabbage- sup plemented group D on the 7th day postburn, compared with the oral TPN group B (p<0.05). However, there was no corresponding decrease in the bacterial translocation ratio or the cecal bacterial population level. Histologic observations on the 4th and the 7th days of glutamine-supplemented group C & cabbage- supplemented group D revealed increases in the villous height, and the numbers of villous cells and goblet cells, compared with the oral TPN group B. A slight desquamation of the villous cells was observed in the cabbage-supplemented group on the 7th day. CONCLUSION : In summary, early enteral feeding is not sufficient to avoid bacterial translocation. Certain nutritional factors such as glutamine are helpful in overcoming the bacterial translocation in burned rats. Korean cabbage was beneficial became promoted an IgA increase in the intestine without a direct effect on the bacterial translocation.

ABSTRACT

We reviewed 28 patients with renal pelvic tumor during the period from 1974 to 1989 and 17 patients were followed up. The over all survival rate at l, 2, and 3 years was 88%, 63%, and 50%, respectively, by the Kaplan-Meier method. The stage and the grade of the tumor were the most influencing factors on prognosis. Simultaneous tumors of ureter or bladder, non-visualizing kidney on excretory urography, duration of the gross hematuria more than 6 months showed relatively poor prognosis. But development of subsequent bladder tumor did not seem to influence on prognosis.

ABSTRACT

In 1906, the human ureteral repair with an isolated segment of ileum was performed by Shoemaker and since 1950, the operation was reported with increasing frequency. At present time, the use of ileum for the replacement of ureter gives the best alternative. Partial or total replacement of the ureter by ileal segment was performed at the Dept. of Urology, St. Mary's hospital in 6 patients from 1971 to 1988. Herein we report our clinical investigation, in which the results were considered to be relatively successful, with brief review of literatures.
