ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study was to examine food habits and dietary behavior related to using processed food among male college students residing in dormitory and self-boarding in Gangwon. A total of 344 students (dormitory group: 227, self-boarding group: 117) were surveyed from May to June of 2012. The results are summarized as follows: self-boarding group had a significantly higher frequency of skipping breakfast and lunch and frequency of out meal compared with the dormitory group (p < 0.05, p < 0.05, p < 0.05 respectively). The self-boarding group had a significantly lower the score of 'eat vegetables and Kimchi at every meal' (p < 0.001) and 'eat a variety of food everyday' (p < 0.001) compared with the dormitory group. The self-boarding group had a significantly higher the preference for meat products (p < 0.05) and canned food (p < 0.01) for selecting processed food compared with the dormitory group. The consideration for selecting processed food was ranked by 'taste', 'price', 'expiration', 'appearance' and 'nutrition' in both dormitory and the self-boarding group. In the dormitory group, nutrition labels were identified certainly 2.6%, sometimes 12.8%, and rarely 17.2%. In the self-boarding group, nutrition labels were identified certainly 1.7%, sometimes 18.0%, and rarely 24.8%. The necessity of nutrition education was high in both dormitory group (51.6%) and the self-boarding group (62.4%). Therefore, development of an educational program and application of the information from nutrition labels for male college students, especially self-boarding students will be effective in improving dietary life in order to maintain healthy dietary habits.

ABSTRACT

A myopericytoma is a rare mesenchymal neoplasm composed of oval to spindle-shaped myoid appearing cells with a striking tendency for concentric perivascular growth. The vast majority of lesion is in the dermis and subcutaneous tissue of extremities. Very few cases have been reported in other locations. We hereby present, with a literature review, a case of myopericytoma in the neck.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Aminoglycoside antibiotics are ototoxic. Understanding of the molecular mechanisms underlying the drug-induced ototoxicity, however, has been hampered by limited cell availability. Recently, HEI-OC1 cells, which are of an immortalized cochlear cell line sensitive to ototoxic drugs, have been derived from the auditory sensory organ. This study was performed to confirm whether cultured HEI-OC1 cells can be used to evaluate aminoglycoside-induced ototoxicity and the effect of antioxidants against aminoglycoside-induced colchlear cell damage. MATERIALS AND METHOD: Gentamicin was administered for 3 days in the media containing HEI-OC1 cells. RESULTS: Cell viability was decreased by gentamicin in a dose-dependent manner. The cell number was decreased by 50% 3 days after the exposure to 2 mM gentamicin. Penicillin did not have any significant effect. Flow cytometric analysis revealed that sub G1 arrest representing cellular apoptosis was accelerated by gentamicin treatment but not by penicillin. Expression of p27Kip1, the cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitor, was exclusively increased by gentamicin. Reactive oxygen species were also increased by gentamicin when compared with those of the control or when penicillin was used. Caspase-3 activity became increased according to the elevation of gentamicin concentrations. N-acetyl cysteine, but not vitamin E or vitamin C, ameliorated cell survival dose-dependently against gentamicin. CONCLUSION:The present study reveals that the HEI-OC1 cell line is a good model to evaluate gentamicin-induced ototoxicity. The results suggest that gentamicin-induced apoptosis may be, at least partially, linked to the overproduction of a reactive oxygen species called. Nacetyl cysteine, a free radical scavenger, that decreases the gentamicin ototoxicity.

ABSTRACT

The salivary gland most frequently involved with secondary cancer is the parotid gland. Metastases are responsible for 21-42% of malignant parotid tumors. Malignant melanoma and squamous cell cancer are the two most common tumors to metastasizing to the parotid gland. Renal cell carcinoma takes up 85% of primary malignant renal tumors. It rarely metastasizes to the head and neck area. When metastasis to head and neck area occurs, it involves the gingiva, tongue, palate, parotid gland, uvlua, mandible, and lip. When tumorous areas arefound in the salivary gland consisting of clear cells, it is important to carry out differential diagnosis of various primary tumors with clear cells and metastatic renal cell carcinoma. In this paper, we report on a case of renal cell carcinoma which had metastasized to the parotid gland after a radical nephrectomy.

ABSTRACT

Nodular fasciitis is a benign myofibroblastic proliferative lesion of the soft tissue. It appears typically as a rapidly growing painless solitary mass over several weeks' duration. It may be confused with a malignant tumor, especially with a sarcomatous lesion due to its aggressive clinical behavior and histological features. Only 7-20% of theses tumors are located in the head and neck since the retroauricular lesion is extremely rare. We report on a patient with nodular fasciitis as a retroauricular mass with a review of literature.

ABSTRACT

Accessory tragus is an embryologic developmental anomaly of the external ear. It is usually presented as congenital, firm papules located anterior to tragus; but rarely, it apprears along an imaginary line drawn between the pretragal and the angle of the mouth, or on the neck along the anterior edge of the sternocleidomastoid muscle and the sternoclavicular region. Histologically, there are numerous follicles, prominent connective tissue framework in the subcutaneous fat and central core of cartilage. The diagnosis is made by the age of onset, site of localization, and affirmative histopathology. We herein report a unique case of cervical accessory tragus on the suprasternoclavicular region in an 8 year-old-boy along with a study of embryological review and differential diagnosis.

ABSTRACT

Actinomycosis is a rare opportunistic infection by Actinomyces israelii that may be localized to cervicofacial, thoracic and abdominopelvic sites. Pelvic actinomycosis commonly arises from genital tract in women with an intrauterine device. Vesical actinomycosis is very rare and imaging features are suggestive of bladder tumor. Herein we report two cases of vesical actinomycosis which were misdiagnosed as bladder tumor preoperatively.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Overweight and obesity are associated with increased mortality and morbidity. Obesity is influenced by multiple factors, both genetic and environmental factors. We investigated the relationship between socioeconomic, behavioral, dietary, reproductive factors and body mass index(BMI). METHODS: The subject were 3000 adults who had visited the Health Screening and Diagnosis Center of Yeungnam University School of Medicine from February to June, 1997. We evaluated BMI and occupation, exercise, smoking, alcohol intake, total calory intake, fat and carbohydrate intake in both gender and reproductive factors in women. Then, we analyzed the association between BMI and such variables as above. RESULTS: 1629 men and 1371 women were analyzed. The mean BMI was 23.4+/- 2.8kg/M(2) in men, 22.9+/- 3.1kg/M(2) in women. In both gender, 9.7% of our population had BMl over 27. Mean BMI increased with age. Those who were active and light smokers( 20cigarette/day) had the lowest BMI in men. But no relationship was observed between BMI and exercise, smoking in women. Heavy alcohol drinkers(> 1cup/day) had higher BMI than other group in both gender. We found significant correlation between BMI and total calory intake, calory intake to recommended calory ratio in both gender. In women, the group whose number of parity was above 3 had significantly higher BMI than the other. And age at first birth was significantly correlated with BMI in a negative direction. CONCLUSIONS: Our results showed that BMI was associated with age, smoking, alcohol, total calory intake, calory intake to recommended calory ratio, parity, age at first birth. Socioeconomic class, exercise and diet composition appeared to have little influence.

ABSTRACT

Ectopic scrotum is extremely rare and refers to the anomalous position of one hemiscrotum along the inguinal canal. Only two cases of ectopic scrotum have been reported in Korea. We experienced a case of unilateral ectopic scrotum with crytorchidism. The penis showed normal in appearence. The ectopic scrotum with cryptorchidism was found on the left inguinal area. And there was left ipsilateral renal agenesis on the ultrasonogram and DMSA renal scanning. We successfully performed scrotoplasty and orchiopexy.
