ABSTRACT

AIM: To explore which variables can predict the weight response to exenatide and to individualize specific therapies for patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) who need treatment with exenatide. METHODS: We performed a study among T2DM patients who were treated with exenatide twice daily for at least 12 months from January 2017 to December 2020. Data of the height, weight, body mass index (BMI) calculated, and HbA1c, fasting plasma glucose (FPG), postprandial plasma glucose (PPG), fasting serum insulin (FINS), postprandial serum insulin (PINS), blood lipids and concurrent diabetic medications at baseline, 3 months, 6 months and 12 months after exenatide initiation were collected. Patients were categorized into two cohorts based on weight loss ≥3%: responders and non-responders. The binary logistic regression analysis was used to identify the major variables of weight response to exenatide. RESULTS: The duration of diabetes in the responder group was shorter than that in patients in the non-responder group (P<0.05). For patients in the responder and non-responder groups, there was a significant decrease in weight, BMI, HbA1c, FPG, PPG, homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) and increase in homeostasis model assessment for beta cell function (HOMA-B) compared with the prarameters before treatment with exenatide (P<0.001). The baseline weight and baseline HbA1c were associated with weight loss after 6 months of treatment with exenatide (P<0.05). CONCLUSION: Baseline weight and HbA1c improvement were positively correlated with weight loss after 6 months of treatment with exenatide and the major predictors of weight response to exenatide.

ABSTRACT

@#AIM: To explore the association between serum complement C3 and C4 with optic neuritis.<p>METHODS: Case-control study design. Optic neuritis subjects(<i>n</i>=137)and control subjects(<i>n</i>=147)who attended the Eye-ENT Hospital of Fudan University from January to August 2018 were recruited. The levels of serum complement C3 and C4 was detected by Roche automatic biochemical analyzer. Univariate analysis and multivariate Logistic regression analysis were performed to compare the level of serum complement C3 and C4 between optic neuritis group and control group. ROC analysis was performed to analysis the diagnosis value of C3 and C4 to distinguish optic neuritis patients.<p>RESULTS: The levels of serum complement C3 and C4 was significant lower(<i>P</i><0.05)in optic neuritis group(96.17±17.93mg/dL),(22.41±7.53mg/dL)compared with control group(108.85±15.94mg/dL),(24.55±6.37 mg/dL). Multivariate logistic regression analysis shown that decreased level of complement C3(<i>OR</i>=1.048, <i>P</i><0.001, 95%<i>CI</i>:1.031-1.065)and C4(<i>OR</i>=1.045, <i>P</i>=0.014, 95%<i>CI</i>: 1.009-1.083)was a risk factor for optic neuritis.<p>CONCLUSION: The levels of serum complement C3 and C4 was decreased which suggested that the decreased level of complement C3 and C4 was risk factor for optic neuritis.

ABSTRACT

@#Objective To explore the characteristics of blink reflex (BR) and brainstem auditory evoked potential (BAEP) in patients with consciousness disorder and the role of BR and BAEP in the evaluation of brain stem function. Methods From January to December, 2015, 31 patients with consciousness disorder were examined with BAEP, BR and Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS), and the outcome was record-ed one month after examination. Results BAEP and BR were positively related with GCS score (r≥0.562, P<0.05) and outcome (χ2=9.644, P<0.01). Conclusion Both BR and BAEP can reflect the brain stem function and respective pathway. Their combination could provide ob-jective basis for prognosis evaluation.

ABSTRACT

Methanol fuel is a most promising substitute for gasoline. It is scarcely reported about methanol-fueled exhaust on the health effect, neither about genotoxicity research between methanol- and gasoline-fueled exhaust. In the present study, the two kinds of exhaust were sampled directly from tailpipe at the same type bus, the same state, L5178Y thymidine kinase (TK) gene mutation assay was used to investigate their genotoxicity at the same dose range, and compared with micronucleus and comet assay. The results showed that the genotoxicity of gasoline-fueled exhaust is stronger than that of methanol-fueled exhaust, while the cytotoxicity of methanol-fueled exhaust is stronger than that of gasoline-fueled exhaust at dose range. The study demonstrated that L5178Y TK gene mutation assay is more sensitive than micronucleus and comet assay.
