ABSTRACT

Objective@#To analyze the rate of erythrocyte iron incorporation and provided guidance for the iron nutrition for prepubertal children.@*Methods@#Fifty-seven prepubertal children of Beijing were involved in this study and each subject was orally administered 3 mg of Fe twice daily to obtain a total of 30 mg Fe after a 5-d period. The stable isotope ratios in RBCs were determined in 14th day, 28th day, 60th day, and 90th day. The erythrocyte incorporation rate in children was calculated using the stable isotope ratios, blood volume and body iron mass.@*Results@#The percentage of erythrocyte Fe incorporation increased starting 14 th day, reached a peak at 60 d (boys: 19.67% ± 0.56%, girls: 21.33% ± 0.59%) and then decreased. The erythrocyte incorporation rates of Fe obtained for girls in 60th day was significantly higher than those obtained for boys ( < 0.0001).@*Conclusions@#The oral administration of Fe to children can be used to obtain erythrocyte iron incorporation within 90 d. Prepubertal girls should begin to increase the intake of iron and further studies should pay more attention to the iron status in prepubertal children.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVETo determine the dietary zinc absorption in a Chinese elderly population and provide the basic data for the setting of zinc (Zn) recommended nutrient intakes (RNI) for Chinese elderly people.

METHODSA total of 24 elderly people were recruited for this study and were administered oral doses of 3 mg 67Zn and 1.2 mg dysprosium on the fourth day. The primary macronutrients, energy, and phytic acid in the representative diet were examined based on the Chinese National Standard Methods. Fecal samples were collected during the experimental period and analyzed for zinc content, 67Zn isotope ratio, and dysprosium content.

RESULTSThe mean (± SD) zinc intake from the representative Chinese diet was 10.6 ± 1.5 mg/d. The phytic acid-to-zinc molar ratio in the diet was 6.4. The absorption rate of 67Zn was 27.9% ± 9.2%. The RNI of zinc, which were calculated by the absorption rate in elderly men and women, were 10.4 and 9.2 mg/d, respectively.

CONCLUSIONThis study got the dietary Zn absorption in a Chinese elderly population. We found that Zn absorption was higher in elderly men than in elderly women. The current RNI in elderly female is lower than our finding, which indicates that more attention is needed regarding elderly females' zinc status and health.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVETo evaluate the effectiveness, safety and feasibility of endovascular angioplasty in treating long iliac artery chronic total occlusions (CTO).

METHODSThe clinical data from a consecutive series of patients with long (> 5 cm) iliac artery CTO who treated by endovascular angioplasty from January 2006 to December 2010 was retrospectively analyzed. There were 139 patients (157 limbs) with long iliac artery CTO treated by endovascular angioplasty in this study [male 93 and female 46, mean age (77 ± 10) years]. According to TASC II classification, there were 18 patients in type B, 89 patients in type C and 32 patients in type D. Recanalization of the occluded lesions was attempted with the left brachial and/or femoral access.

RESULTSThe ankle brachial index increased from 0.42 ± 0.19 before treatment to 0.81 ± 0.26 after treatment. The rate of technical success was 96.2% (151/157) and the patency rate of iliac artery was 94.1% (111/118) during the follow-up. Significant restenosis or reocclusion was found in 7 iliac lesions and there were no major interventional complications, such as iliac artery rupture, stent displacement, pseudoaneurysms, and arteriovenous fistula.

CONCLUSIONSEndovascular angioplasty is an effective, safe and feasible method in treating long iliac CTO with high patency rate. Combined left brachial and femoral access can increase the technical success rate significantly.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVETo study the effects of different doses of cigarette smoke extract (CSE) on the erectile function of male rats and the mechanism of smoking-induced erectile dysfunction (ED).

METHODSA total of 75 healthy male SD rats were randomly divided into Groups A (control), B (dimethyl sulphoxide [DMSO]), C (low-dose CSE), D (medium-dose CSE) and E (high-dose CSE). CSE models were established in male SD rats by hypodermic injection, and 60 days later observed for penile erection following subcutaneous injection of apomorphine. Then the rats were killed and the penile cavernous body obtained for the examination of NOS activity by chromatometry and the determination of Cx43 expression by laser scanning confocal fluorescence microscopy (LCSM).

RESULTSCompared with the control and DMSO groups, penile erection frequency, NOS activity and Cx43 expression in the penile cavernous tissue were significantly decreased in the CSE groups (P < 0.05), and the decrease was proportional to the increase of the doses of CSE. No statistically significant differences were observed between the control and DMSO groups (P > 0.05).

CONCLUSIONCigarette smoke obviously reduces NOS activity and Cx43 expression in the penile cavernous tissue and seriously affects penile erection. The higher the dose, the more serious the influence. The decreases of NOS activity and Cx43 expression may be an important mechanism of ED.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVEThe purpose of this study was to assess the prevention and management of subintimal angioplasty (SIA) to treat lower extremity arterial occlusions.

METHODSFrom December 2003 to May 2008, 106 lower extremities with arterial occlusions (median length of 10.8 cm, range from 4.5 to 28.0 cm) were treated on an intention-to-treat basis with SIA. Twenty-one lower extremities had disabling claudication and 85 had limb-threatening ischemia. Main outcome measures included the occurrences of SIA complications and their prevention and management. In order to prevent and cure perforation of a vessel and the important collaterals being compromised, the recanalisation of SIA was performed in the "roadmap" of DSA, the guide wire was advanced with top loop through the subintimal plane until the occlusion was passed, the position of the catheter which was confirmed by injection of a small amount of contrast media during the manipulations. In order to prevent and cure acute reocclusion and embolisation, subintimal angioplasty of long occlusion was performed by long suitable diameter balloon catheters, with prolonged (2 to 3 min) inflation, stents were only placed with residual stenoses and intimal flaps. Anticoagulation was administered for 3 to 5 d and then antiplatelet treatment was given for 6 months.

RESULTSThe subcutaneous light gore of arterial access sites was seen in five legs, no arterial embolisation occurred. The perforation rate was 6% (7 legs), but no serious outcomes occurred. One patient had been amputated because of important collaterals being compromised. Three legs had acute occlusion in subintimal recanalisation and one patient converted what would have been an above-knee bypass, into a below-knee bypass.

CONCLUSIONSThe complications of subintimal angioplasty include perforation, embolisation, acute recanalisation occlusion and important collaterals being compromised. Most of these complications can be prevented and cured, few serious outcomes occur.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVETo analyze the experience with diagnosis and surgical treatment of visceral artery aneurysms (VAAs).

METHODSFrom June 2003 to December 2008, 8 patients (2 male and 6 female) with 9 VAAs underwent surgical treatment. Mean age was 49 years (ranged from 30 to 72 years). The site of aneurysmal disease was splenic artery in 4 cases, superior mesenteric artery in 2 cases, renal artery in 2 cases (3 aneurysms). In 1 patient of splenic artery aneurysm, portal vein hypertension coexisted. All the VAAs of preoperative diagnostic workup consisted of a ultrasound, computed tomography (CT) scan, and digital subtraction angiography. Six patients were operated on and two patients was treated with endovascular procedures. Only one small VAAs was treated with follow-up.

RESULTSNo deaths or major complications occurred in the perioperative period. All the patients remained symptom free during a follow-up of 26.5 months (ranged from 2 to 60 months). Follow-up consisted of clinical and ultrasound scan examinations or CT scan at 1 and 6 months, and yearly thereafter.

CONCLUSIONSAggressive approach to the treatment of VAAs is essential. Elective open surgical treatment and an endovascular procedure of visceral artery aneurysms are both safe and effective, and offers satisfactory early and long term results. There is some evidence that small (< 2 cm) and asymptomatic VAAs may be safely observed.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVETo study the effect of cigarette smoke on the sexual function of male rats.

METHODSBased on Ozyurt's smoking model, we equally divided 30 male adult Sprague-Dawley rats into a control and a smoking group, and exposed the latter to cigarette smoke for 60 days. A week before the end of the experiment, we added 5 female rats to each group and observed their mating through 24-hour video surveillance. Sixty days later, all the rats were killed for the determination of the level of testosterone (T) in the plasma and the activity of nitric oxide synthase (NOS) in the corpus cavernosum, and Masson-dyeing image analysis of the penile tissue.

RESULTSCompared with the controls, the rats in the smoking group showed a significant reduction in the times of mating, the level of plasma T (P < 0.05) and the activity of NOS in the penile cavernous tissue (P < 0.05), but a slight increase in the collagen fibers and obvious changes in the blood sinuses.

CONCLUSIONCigarette smoke seriously affected penile erection in the experimental rats. The decrease in plasma T, NOS activity and the area of smooth muscle may be an important mechanism underlying their erectile dysfunction.

ABSTRACT

The treatment of congenital vascular malformations is still a difficult problem. Minimally invasive surgical treatments such as sclerotherapy, embolizations, and laser treatments have become increasingly applied. Arteriovenous malformations are treated by transcatheter endovascular selective arterial embolizations, venous malformations by sclerotherapy, Nd: YAG laser, and DIOMED laser treatments, and Klippel-Trenaunay syndrome by endovenous DIOMED laser treatments. Most patients with congenital vascular malformations obtain good clinical outcomes after minimally invasive surgeries, although their long-term efficacy requires further investigation.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVETo assess the relationship between the overexpression of facilitative glucose transporter-1 (Glut1) and fluorine-18 fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) uptake in patients with primary lung adenocarcinoma.

METHODSFrom April 1999 to March 2001, 24 patients with lung adenocarcinoma were imaged with FDG positron emission tomography (PET) before surgery. Their maximum and mean standard uptake value (SUVmax and SUVmean) of tumor and SUV of normal lung (SUVlung) were measured. The expression of Glut1 of all 24 cases was studied in paraffin sections by SP immunohistochemistry.

RESULTSAll 23 tumors tested were Glut1 positive. (35 +/- 23)% of tumor cell area was positive and staining intensity was (3.7 +/- 0.9). All tumors of the patients could be detected by FDG-PET. FDG uptake of tumor was higher than that of normal lung (P < 0.01). SUVmax, SUVmean and SUVlung were (5.46 +/- 3.32), (4.05 +/- 2.54) and (0.43 +/- 0.15) respectively. Correlations were found among Glut1 expression and FDG uptake and tumor size (P < 0.01).

CONCLUSIONGlut1 overexpression is universal in the lung adenocarcinoma and correlate with FDG uptake.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVETo assess the relationship between the overexpression of facilitative glucose transporter-1 (Glut1) and fluorine-18 fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) uptake in patients with primary lung squamous cell carcinoma.

METHODSFrom April 1999 to March 2001, 23 patients with lung squamous cell carcinoma were imaged using FDG positron emission tomography (PET) before surgery. Their maximum and mean standard uptake values (SUVmax and SUVmean) of tumor and SUV of the normal lung (SUVlung) were measured. The expression of Glut1 of all the 23 cases was analysed in paraffin sections using SP immunohistochemistry.

RESULTSAll the 23 tumors tested were Glut1 positive (69 +/- 18)% of tumor cell area was positive and staining intensity was 4.6 +/- 0.7. All tumors of the patients could be detected by FDG-PET. FDG uptake of tumor was higher than that of normal lung (P < 0.01). SUVmax, SUVmean and SUVlung were 8.33 +/- 4.14, 6.10 +/- 3.00 and 0.38 +/- 0.13 respectively. Correlations were found among Glut1 expression and FDG uptake and tumor size (P < 0.01).

CONCLUSIONS(1) Glut1 overexpression is universal in the lung squamous cell carcinoma. (2) SUV was higher in the lung squamous cell carcinoma than that of the normal lung tissue. (3) Glut1 expression and FDG uptake and tumor size appear to be correlated with each other in patients with lung squamous cell carcinoma.
