ABSTRACT

Alpinia katsumadai is recorded in Chinese herbal classics of previous dynasties, with a long history of medicinal use and significantly efficacy. This paper made a comprehensive textual research and summarization of the name, origin, distribution of producing areas, genuine producing area, harvesting time, processing method, property and flavor, and treatment functions of A. katsumadai by reviewing the ancient and modern literatures systematically. A. katsumadai has many alias names, such as Doukou,Loukou,Caokou in Chinese. Through the analysis of ancient herbal researches and drawings,it is concluded that there was some disordered uses of A. katsumadai with A. zerumbet and Amomum tsaoko. And the varieties of A. katsumadai have changed in some areas from ancient to present. The original plants of A. katsumadai is Alpinia katsumadai, which belongs to Alpinia of Zingiberaceae in modern textual research. A. katsumadai mainly grows in Lingnan and some other tropical areas; especially, those produced in Hainan have a better quality. The harvest time is usually in summer and autumn when fruits are all ripe. The processing methods of A. katsumadai are various, including heating and bending wrapped with flour, processing slowly with Euodiae Fructus,stir-frying in ancient times, while purifying processing (peeling) is generally used in modern times. A. katsumadai has the effect in invigorating spleen and warming stomach, lower Qi and relieving stagnation-syndrome,drying dampness and driving cold. In modern studies, efforts shall be made to strengthen basic research, establish quantitative standards for processing and digital standard for genuine medicinal materials of A. katsumadai, and deeply explore the compatibility regularity and application of A. katsumadai in ancient prescriptions, in order to ensure the quality and maximize its medicinal value in modern studies.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE@#To study the clinical effect of alanyl-glutamine-enriched nutritional support in the treatment of children with abdominal Henoch-Schönlein purpura.@*METHODS@#Children with abdominal Henoch-Schönlein purpura who needed nutritional support were enrolled and stratified according to age, sex and the severity of disease, and were randomly divided into a control group (n=118) and an enriched nutritional support group (n=107). The control group was given nutritional support without using alanyl-glutamine, while the enriched nutritional support group was given alanyl-glutamine-enriched nutritional support. Intravenous steroids were used according to the severity of disease in both groups. Other therapies were the same in the two groups. The two groups were compared in terms of the length of hospital stay, the rate and duration of use of intravenous steroids, the recurrence rate of symptoms during hospitalization, the rate of total parenteral nutrition (TPN), the rate of weight loss and the rate of fasting for more than 5 days. All patients were followed up for 3 months after discharge to monitor the recurrence of symptoms.@*RESULTS@#There were no significant differences in the length of hospital stay, the rate of TPN and the rate of fasting for more than 5 days between the two groups (P>0.05). Compared with the enriched nutritional support group, the control group showed significant increases in the rate and duration of use of intravenous steroids, the recurrence rate of symptoms and the rate of weight loss (P<0.05). After the 3-month follow-up, all the children resumed normal diet, and the recurrence rate of digestive symptoms was less than 20% in each group. Abdominal pain was the most common symptom (83.33%, 30/36), followed by vomiting and abdominal distention. No digestive hemorrhage was observed. All the symptoms were relieved after symptomatic treatment. No significant difference was found between the two groups in the recurrence rate of digestive symptoms (P=0.693).@*CONCLUSIONS@#Alanyl-glutamine-enriched nutritional support in the treatment of children with abdominal Henoch-Schönlein purpura can reduce the use of intravenous steroids and weight loss, but without impact on the length of hospital stay and post-discharge recurrence.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVETo investigate the epidemiological and clinical features of calicivirus-associated diarrhea in hospitalized children in Chengdu, China in recent years.

METHODSThe clinical data of 267 children with calicivirus-associated diarrhea aged <5 years who were hospitalized in Chengdu Women and Children's Central Hospital (the only sentinel hospital for sample collection of pediatric viral diarrhea in Chengdu, Sichuan) between January 2012 and December 2014 were retrospectively studied.

RESULTSAmong the 267 children, 200 (74.9%) were aged less than 1 year. The infection rate of calicivirus was 28.4%, 21.6%, and 27.1% in 2012, 2013, and 2014, respectively. Calicivirus was prevalent in summer and autumn (August to October). The detection rate of Norovirus II was 85.8% (229/267), and 244 children (91.4%) experienced an acute clinical course. Watery stool was the most common change in stool properties (82.0%, 219 children), and some specimens showed mucus and/or blood. Most children had moderate to severe fever. One hundred and thirty-eight children (53.9%) experienced a reduced serum prealbumin level. One hundred and fifty-nine children (59.6%) experienced flora imbalance.

CONCLUSIONSCalicivirus has become one of the major pathogens for diarrhea in children aged <5 years in Chengdu, with Norovirus II as the dominant strain. Calicivirus is prevalent in summer and autumn. Infants aged <1 year are the main population affected by calicivirus-associated diarrhea, with watery stool as the most common manifestation.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVETo explore the protective effect of allicin on nicotine-induced oxidative damage to human periodontal ligament cells (HPDLCs).

METHODS(1) Establish nicotine-induced oxidative damage model on HPDLCs. Use water-soluble tetrazolium (WST) colorimetric method to find out the nicotine concentration (X) that could inhibit HPDLCs' growth for the following experiments. (2) HPDLCs of the fifth passage were divided into 5 groups: The control group, the nicotine group and the nicotine+allicin groups(the concentration of allicin was 15, 30, and 60 microg x mL(-1) respectively). Different kinds of culture media were added. Similarly, use WST colorimetric method to choose the allicin concentration (Y) that could significantly improve the survival rate of HPDLCs. (3) HPDLCs were divided into 3 groups: The control group, the nicotine group, the nicotine+allicin group and different media were added. The glutathion (GSH) concentrations in HPDLCs were determined in 1, 4, 8, 12 and 24h respectively.

RESULTS0.8 mg x mL(-1) nicotine could inhibit the HPDLCs survival rate significantly (77% of the control, P < 0.05). But 60 microg x mL(-1) allicin could prevent the inhibition effects evidently, improving the survival rate to 112% of that of the nicotine group (P < 0.05) and reaching the survival rate level of control group (P > 0.05). The GSH concentrations of nicotine+allicin group were higher than that of the nicotine group always (P < 0.05) and by 82% at 8 h after culture, but had no difference with that of the control group (P > 0.05).

CONCLUSION60 microg x mL(-1) allicin can protect the HPDLCs against oxidative damage induced by nicotine.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVETo investigate the changes of auditory parameters during anesthesia and establish the assessment indicators for anesthesia monitoring in animal experiments.

METHODSBALB/c mice of 4 to 6 weeks were given a single intraperitoneal dose of urethane, and the auditory evoked potential in the surgically exposed inferior colliculus in response to pure tone stimulation was recorded during urethane metabolism. The latency and amplitude data of the waves were extracted using Matlab software to analyze their variations during urethane metabolism.

RESULTSThe latency of the auditory evoked potential showed slight variation and was well correlated to time. The latency decreased progressively during urethane metabolism, fast in the initial 2 h and tending to stabilize afterwards.

CONCLUSIONThe latency of the auditory evoked potential can be more suitable indicators than the amplitude for anesthetic effect monitoring.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVETo compare the shaping ability and the influence on apical foramen among hand ProTaper, stainless steel K-files and rotary ProTaper in preparing different curved root canal.

METHODSForty simulated resin root canal blocks were randomly divided into four groups and prepared by hand ProTaper, stainless steel K-file and rotary ProTaper, respectively. Of them, 12 blocks in group A, B, C consist of six 200 curved root canals and six 30 degrees curved root canals each group. The curvature of the other 4 blocks in group D was less than 5 degrees. Taking photos of the models to the root canal orthotopically and apical foramen using digital camera before and after instrumentation. Finally, the transportation of root canal and the size of apical foramen were analyzed using special image software Auto-CAD.

RESULTSThe transportation of center in group B was the highest than that in group A and group C (P<0.05). In some portions of root canal, the transportation of center in group C was higher than that in group A. The size of the apical foramen in group B was significantly bigger than the other groups and the size of the apical foramen in 30 degrees root canal was significantly bigger than that in 20 degrees root canal after instrumentation (P<0.05). There was no significantly different between group A and group C, though the size of apical foramen in group C was bigger than that in group A at the same curvature, and that in 30 degrees root canal was bigger than in 20 degrees root canal (P>0.05).

CONCLUSIONBoth of the two instruments engender root canal transportation, and curvature is the main reason of transportation. Comparing with stainless steel K-files, NiTi files can maintain the shape of the root canal and apical foramen well.
