ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVETo observe the impacts on skeletal fluorosis pain, joint motor dysfunction and urine fluoride excretion in the treatment with fire needle therapy, electroacupuncture and calcium carbonate D3.

METHODSThe randomized controlled trial was adopted. Ninety-five patients were randomized into a fire needle group (31 cases), an electroacupuncture group (33 cases) and a calcium carbonate D3 group (31 cases). In the fire needle group and the electroacupuncture group, Ashi points, Dazhui (GV 14), Geshu (BL 17), Quchi (LI 11), Hegu (LI 4), Xuehai (SP 10) points were selected and stimulated with fire needle and electroacupuncture separately, three times a week. In the calcium carbonate D3 group, calcium carbonate D3 tablets was prescribed for oral administration, 600 mg each time, twice a day. The duration of treatment was 2 months in the electroacupuncture group and calcium carbonate D3 group and 1 month in the fire needle group. VAS score, the range of motion (ROM) and urine fluoride value were compared before and after treatment in the patients of the three groups.

RESULTSAfter treatment, VAS value and ROM were improved significantly in the patients of the three groups (all P < 0.05), the difference was not significant in comparison of the three groups (all P > 0.05). After treatment, the urine fluoride value was increased significantly in the fire needle group [(7.89 +/- 3.61) mg/L vs (9.81 +/- 4.17) mg/L, P < 0.01] and was increased in the electroacupuncture group [(7.53 +/- 3.46) mg/L vs (8.97 +/- 4.21) mg/L, P < 0.05]. The difference was not significant in comparison before and after treatment in the calcium carbonate D3 group (P > 0.05).

CONCLUSIONThe fire needle therapy, electroacupuncture and calcium carbonate D3 all have the clinical value in the prevention and treatment of skeletal fluorosis and the difference in the therapeutic effect has not been discovered among them yet at present. But it has been found that the fire needle therapy and electroacupuncture display the active significance in the promotion of urine fluoride excretion.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVETo observe the impacts of acupuncture of reinforcing kidney and activating spleen on the excretion of urinary fluoride and pain of the patients with drinking-water type fluorosis.

METHODSThe randomized controlled and single-blind trial was adopted. Seventy-two cases were randomized into an observation group and a control group, 36 cases in each one. In the observation group, acupuncture was applied at Pishu (BL 20), Shenshu (BL 23), Guanyuan (CV 4), Zusanli (ST 36), etc. , three treatments a week. In the control group, the Calcium Carbonate D3 tablets were prescribed for oral administration, 600 mg each time, twice a day. The duration of treatment was 2 months. The changes of the content of urinary fluoride and pain score (by VAS) before and after treatment between two groups were compared.

RESULTSThe urinary fluoride excretion was increased obviously after treatment in the observation group (P < 0.01), which was superior apparently to that in the control group [(11.06 +/- 4.54) mg/L vs. (8.30 +/- 4.14) mg/L, P < 0.05]. After treatment, VAS score was reduced significantly in either group (both P < 0.01). The result in the observation group was lower remarkably than that in the control group (1.93 +/- 1.30 vs. 3.47 +/- 2.29, P < 0.01).

CONCLUSIONAcupuncture achieves the significant efficacy on the promotion of urinary fluoride excretion and pain relieving of the patients with drinking-water type fluorosis in light of reinforcing kidney and activating spleen, which is superior to the oral administration of the calcium carbonate D3 tablets.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVETo understand the HA1 genetic variation characterization of influenza virus subtype H3N2 circulated from 2001 to 2006 in Liaoning local area.

METHODSViral RNA was extracted and transcribed into cDNA by reverse transcriptase and amplified by PCR. The product of PCR was purified by QIAgen purification kits, and sequenced by ABI 3100avant. The sequence data were analyzed phylogenetically by Sequence software with epidemic records. Finally, the phylogenetic trees were drawn according to deduced amino acid sequences of influenza virus H3N2 from 2000 to 2006 in the NCBI database.

RESULTSThe seven HA1domain sequences of H3N2 influenza viruses circulated from 2001 to 2006 in Liaoning local area had been analyzed. Compared with WHO 2004-2006 H3N2 vaccine A/California/7/2004, 12 bases had changed, 4 positions had amino acid substitution in 62 * > E, 182 T > 1,224 S > A,225 C > Y. 224 and 225 are RBS (Receptor binding site). The homology is lower than 98%. Phylogenetic tree showed Liaoning H3N2 2006 strains and Zhejiang 2005 strains were similar to WHO Northern hemisphere winter 2006-2007 Vaccine A/Wisconsin/67/2005 (H3N2)-like virus and grouped together to form an independent cluster even though several bases were still different.

CONCLUSIONThe HA1 domain of HA gene of influenza viruses (H3N2) isolated from 2001-2006 in Liaoning local area showed base mutation, amino acid sequence difference compared to A/California/7/2004 (2005-2006 vaccine), suggesting it might be the main cause leading to the spread of influenza. The sequence analysis showed Liaoning 2006 H3N2 strains were similar to those from Southern area which suggested that further surveullance should be conducted to monitor the virus mutation in circulation.

ABSTRACT

This paper studied the effect of polyethylene glycol (PEG) on regeneration and free proline accumulation of callus of Pogonatherum paniceum (Lam.) Hack. under motionless liquid culture condition and shake liquid culture condition. Callus of P. paniceum had the ability to resist the stress of PEG. The effects of PEG stress and culture conditions on the callus of P. paniceum appeared mainly in two aspects, delaying regeneration time and debasing regeneration rates. The shake liquid culture mainly delayed the regeneration time and PEG stress mainly debased the regeneration rates. Free proline accumulated in the two culture conditions, and the contents of proline were positively correlated with PEG concentrations and culture time. After stress removal, most of the callus could recover the ability of regeneration, and the free proline might pay an important part in the inhibition and recovery. So it must be chosen a more than 300 g x L(-1) PEG concentration and long than 3 weeks culture time in the selection of drought-resistant mutants of P. paniceum. The motionless liquid culture was more suitable for selection of drought-resistant mutants.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVETo investigate the prevalence and subtypes of influenza viruses in Liaoning regions from November 1999 to March 2005.

METHODSInfluenza virus was isolated by embryonated eggs together with cell culture and subtypes, identified by HI test.

RESULTSDuring the study in 1999 - 2005, a total number of 2713 swab specimens were collected in different cities in Liaoning regions in which 188 strains were identified for influenza viruses with an average rate as 7.0%. A total number of 1466 swab specimens were collected by both Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Dalian city and Liaoning province, and 167 strains were identified positive with an average rate of 11.4%. Influenza A3, A1 and B/Yamagata all appeared before March 2002 which were predominant strains. However, since then Influenza A1 has never appeared again in Liaoning regions and B showed some changes, from Yamagata to Victoria, the characteristics on the prevalence of influenza appeared only in the period of November to February.

CONCLUSIONIt was meaningful to analyze the surveillance data of influenza in different years in Liaoning regions in order to better understand the characteristics of influenza and the shifting of subtype.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVETo develop a computer-aided mandibular repositioning system (CAMRS) and investigate its preliminary application in efficacy prediction of oral appliance in patients with obstructive sleep apnea-hypopnea syndrome (OSAHS).

METHODSCAMRS was mainly consisting of a step motor and a screw that was remote-controlled by a computer. This system could work with polysomnography (PSG). Fourteen OSAHS patients diagnosed by PSG were recruited. With CAMRS, six mandibular positions were titrated with PSG for every hour.

RESULTSStable mandible positioning and little sleeping disturbance were observed. Apnea hypopnea index (AHI) was improved progressively with mandibular advancement. The extent of mandibular advancement was correlated with the severity of OSAHS (r = 0.72747).

CONCLUSIONSCAMRS could reproductively and effectively reposition mandible with little sleeping disturbance. Through CAMRS, an individualized optimal mandibular position could be obtained for each OSAHS patient treated with oral appliance.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVETo investigate morphologic changes of Angle class II and skeletal class I patients during pendulum and straight wire appliances treatment and to analyze the mechanism of this treatment protocol.

METHODS10 patients with Angle class II and skeletal class I malocclusion were recruited. The lateral cephalometric radiographs were evaluated to determine if there were significant differences among pre-treatment (T1), after molar distalization (T2), and post-treatment (T3) variables including skeletal, dental and soft tissue relationships.

RESULTSDifferences between the T1 and T2 means were significant for distal movement and distal angulation of the maxillary molars (P < 0.01), mesial angulation of the maxillary incisors (P < 0.05), mesial movement of the maxilla (P < 0.01) . There were no significant changes between T1 and T3 in respect saggital position and angulation of the maxillary molars (P > 0.05) . Only the mesial movement of lower first molars and upper and lower jaws were significant (P < 0.01) during the whole treatment. No upper second molar impaction was detected after treatment.

CONCLUSIONThe upper molars distalization could be achieved by pendulum appliance. The class I molar relationship could be obtained by the differential growth of jaws and the differential movement of upper and lower molars.
