ABSTRACT

Objective:To investigate the clinicopathological features and differential diagnosis of 2 patients with renal epithelioid angiomyolipoma (AML), representing 5.4 % of a series of 37 patients undergoing biopsy for renal tumors. Methods:The histopathological, immunohistochemical and clinical characteristics of renal epithelioid angiomyolipoma were studied by immunohistochemical stain for melanoma marker (HMB45), (Pan)melanoma marker Ab-1,cytokeratin (CK), smooth muscle actin (SMA), epithelial membrane antigen (EMA),vimentin (Vim), p53, proliferating cell nuclear antigen(PCNA), Ki67 antigen. Results:Two patients, aged 31 and 39,were alive for 8 and 10 months, respectively.Microscopically, both tumors were mainly made up of diffuse sheets of epithelioid cells and scattered thick-walled blood vessels, necrosis was account for up to 30% of the mass. The epithelioid cells had huge, extremely pleomorphic nuclei with abundant eosinophilic cytoplasm. Scattered tumor giant cells with prominent nuclei were also seen. The epithelioid AML regions of these tumors were immunoreactive for HMB45, (Pan)melanoma marker Ab-1, SMA, Vim and PCNA. Neither atypical epithelioid cells nor typical AML cells were immunoreactive for cytokeratin (CK) and epithelial membrane antigen (EMA).Conclusion: The results of this study suggested that the renal epithelioid AML was a mild malignant tumor before distant metastases. The differential diagnosis between renal malignant AML and sarcomatoid renal cell carcinoma was established by immunohistochemical findings.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To study the efficacy, safety and relative characteristics of formulated Chinese medicinal herbs as a vascular embolizing agent. Methods: We prepared a mixture as a vascular embolizing agent from several Chinese medicinal herbs, they served as anticarcinogen and/or coagulant according to the Chinese Pharmacopeia. We studied the characteristics of the mixture through embolizing the hepatic artery in eight pigs with it. Results: The mixture was prepared as a suspension. It was easily injected through catheters and showed good histocompatibility and hemo-compatibility without pyrogenetic response and toxicity. The mixture mainly embolized peripheral arteries, maintaining occlusion for 5 weeks and without formation of collateral circulation. We found injuries of normal hepatic tissues as slight hepatocyte hydrops and focal endochyloma necrosis through optical and electronic microscope. Conclusion: This suspended mixture of Chinese medicinal herbs is safe and effective as a potential peripheral embolizing agent.

ABSTRACT

<p><b>OBJECTIVE</b>To investigate the clinicopathological features and prognosis of 22 cases of central neurocytoma (CNC), representing 0.48% of a series of 4 528 patients undergoing biopsy for central nervous system tumors.</p><p><b>METHODS</b>The histopathological, ultrastructral, immunohistochemical and clinical features of CNC were studied by electron microscopic examination and immunohistochemical stain for Synaptophysin (Syn), neuron special enolase (NSE), Leu-7, glial fibrillary acid protein (GFAP), MBP and proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA).</p><p><b>RESULTS</b>The age of the cases ranged from 4 to 44 (average 27.9 years) with all tumors localized in the ventricles. In the 18 patients followed up, 14 were alive for 8 months to 14 years and 11 months after the operation, and 4 died. The average survival period was 70.7 months. Histologically, the tumor in all 22 cases had the oligodendroglioma-like pattern with honeycomb appearance and cell-free islands of eosinophilic matrix. Cellular anaplasia, mitosis and necrotic areas were rarely seen in the tumors. Immunohistochemical study demonstrated strong positivity for Syn, NSE and Leu-7, and negative for GFAP and MBP. Ultrastructural features showed presence of round tumor cells with abundant cell processes containing microtubules, neurosecretory granules, clear vesicles and lysosome-like structures.</p><p><b>CONCLUSIONS</b>The differential diagnosis between CNC and oligodendroglioma could not be established by routine light microscopy. The importance of immunohistochemical and electron microscopic studies for making a correct diagnosis is emphasized. The prognosis of patients is usually favorable, even if the tumor was resected subtotally. The relationship between the presence of anaplastic histological features in CNC and patient outcome remains unclear.</p>

ABSTRACT

<p><b>OBJECTIVE</b>To detect the feasibility and theoretic basis for treatment with hyperbaric oxygenation (HBO) in chronic hepatitis and to compare the changes in hepatic function, immunity, pathologic morphology, ultrastructure and HBV in hepatic tissues before and after treatment.</p><p><b>METHODS</b>Sixty cases of chronic hepatitis were randomly selected and divided into two groups: the experiment (n = 30) and control groups (n = 30). Patients in the experimental group were treated with HBO for 6 courses. Patients in the control group were treated for 60 days with the usual drugs used in the clinic. The function and bloodstream graph of liver were examined and liver biopsies were made before and after treatments. Routine paraffin sections were stained with HE and observed under the light microscope. Ultra thin slides from paraformaldehyde and glutaraldehyde fixed liver tissue were stained with lead citrate and observed with the transmission electric microscope. HBsAg and HBcAg in liver of the experimental group were detected with ABC immunohistochemistry method before and after treatment.</p><p><b>RESULTS</b>For the experimental group, ALT, SB, gamma-GT, AKP, IgG, and IgM in blood and the degeneration and necrosis of hepatocytes were remarkably decreased (P < 0.05 ), the mean contractive wave of bloodstream in liver and the bloodstream in right ramus of janitrix were remarkably increased (P < 0.05), and the swelling of mitochondria, increase of lysosomes, generation of Kupffer cells, infiltration of lymphocytes in portal area and capillary generation were all remarkably all eviated (P < 0.05) after treatment with HBO. There were significant differences between the experimental and control groups after treatment with different methods (P < 0.05). For patients in the experimental group, the fibrosis and fat-storing cells in the liver were not reduced (P > 0.05), and the expression of HBsAg and HBcAg in liver was not weakened (P < 0.05) after treatment.</p><p><b>CONCLUSIONS</b>Treatment with HBO for chronic hepatitis was effective and recommendable, but it could not reverse liver fibrosis. However, it might be able to delay or prevent the liver from fibrosis, so it might be more effective at the early and middle stages of chronic hepatitis. HBO could not inhibit the HB virus. So we consider that treatment with HBO should be simultaneous with anti HBV therapy.</p>

ABSTRACT

Objective To report the first case of cervical l ymphadenitis caused by Candida albicans in China. Methods A series of clinical, histopatholog ic.and mycologic studies were carried out in an 8year-old-boy with cervical lymphadenitis, who had no definite underlying disease.Candida albicans was isolated fromthe patient. The lymph node was investigated by me ans of culture, pathological and tra nsmission electron microscopic examination and cellular immunology detected by flow cytometer. Results There were several enlarged, warm,a nd fluctuant cervical lymph nodes which varied fr om 1cm?1cm to 4cm?4cm in size. One swo llen node was excised, and Candida albicans was found in the culture. The histopathologic changes of the cervical lym ph node were compatible with chronic granulomatous disease.PAS and methenamine silver(PAM)stain of a touch preparation of the bi opsy specimen revealed budding spores an d pseudohyphae.Lymphopenia with a p roportionate decrease of T-helper a nd T-suppressor cells was shown with flowcytometry. The patient received a combination therapy of surgery, flu conazole, thymosin and so on.After one month,t he patient's condition was improved. Many small lymph nodes disappeared, large lymph nodes became smaller.Tw o months later, only one large lymph n ode could be touched. Conclusion It is the first case of cervical lymphad enitis caused by Candida reported in China.Combination therapy of surgery, fluconazole and thymosin is effective.

ABSTRACT

The human atrial muscle cells were investigated by ultrastructural CMPase cytochemistry and atrial natriuretic factor (ANF) immunocytochemistry. The primary lysosomes and ANF were labelled by these techniques, respectively. ANF was localized in the atrial specific granules, these granules were similar in size and 0.20? 0.051?m in diameter, distributed over the entire cytoplasm, preferentially being located in the subsarcolemmal and perinuclear region and forming clusters. Primary lysosomes were various in size, 0.30?0.191?m in diameter, significantly larger than atrial specific granules (P

ABSTRACT

Peroxisomes (microbodies) were studied with CATase, G-6-Pase, TPPase, CMPase cytochemistry and stereology by electron microscopy in 15 cases of normal human liver specimens. In human hepatocytes peroxisomes are ellipsoid or round intracellular bodies. They contain homogeneous fine granular matrix, and surrounded by unit membrane, and distribute randomly in the cytoplasm. By stereological analysis, the peroxisomes accounted for 1.33?0.38% of the cytoplasmic volume, their numerical density in spase was 9.76?1.63/100 ?m~3 cytoplasm, and the ratio of mitochondria to peroxisomes in quantity was 6.22?1.17. The result of G-6-Pase cytochemistry showed no luminal connection between endoplasmic reticulum and peroxisomes. The membrane similar to smooth endoplasmic reticulum seem to be connected with peroxisomes which was G-6-Pase negative, hence such membrane may be peroxisomal membrane system rather than smooth endoplasmic reticulum. The TPPase cytochemistry showed that peroxisomes did not connect with the Golgi complex structurally, and the Golgi complex may not be involved in the biogenesis of peroxisomes. Some figures resembled fission and budding of peroxisomes were viewed, and this finding suggested that new peroxisomes formed probably by division of preexisting peroxisomes.

ABSTRACT

In present study, animal model of cardiac hypertrophy induced by abdominal aortic stenosis was utilized, and the lysosomes were investigated by electron microscopy and ultrastructural cytochemistry. The results showed that while cardiac hypertrophy developed, lysosomes participate in apparent remolding of cardiac muscle cells; in the late stage of cardiac hypertrophy, a great deal of autophagocytoses were viewed in some muscle cells which may result in irreversible cell damage.
