ABSTRACT

Objective To explore role of functional neck dissection for lower collar-shaped incision at hair margin behind ear in the treatment of differentiated thyroid cancer. Methods The clinical data of 11 patients with thyroid papillary carcinoma who underwent func-tional neck dissection for lower collar-shaped incision at hair margin behind ear were retrospectively analyzed. Results The incisions of all patients were unseen in daily life and patients were satisfied with the postoperative appearances. No case of shoulder syndrome, postoperative local recurrence and distant metastasis was observed. Conclusion Functional neck dissection for lower collar-shaped incision at hair margin behind ear is effective in the treatment of differentiated thyroid cancer. Meanwhile it can obviously improve patients’ postoperative appearance and life quality, therefore it is worth clinical application.

ABSTRACT

Objective To investigate the expression of snrvivin,an anti-apoptosis gene,in breast cancer tissues and its relationship with clinical parameters of breast cancer patients. To investigate the role of survivin in oncogenesis of breast cancer and its relation with prognosis of breast cancer. Methods Western blot was conducted to detect survivin expression in cancerous tissues and adjacent tissues of 50 breast cancer patients.20 normal breast tissue samples were used as control. Results Survivin was expressed in 38 of the 50 breast cancer tissues (76.0%)and in 11 of 50 breast adjacent normal tissues(22.0%)while no expression was found in normal tissues. The positive protein expression of survivin was related to axillary lymph node metastasis of breast cancer while it was not related to expression of PR,ER,Her-2 or ages of patients. Conclusion Survivin may play a role in breast tumorigenesis and is an important predictive parameter in breast cancer patients.

ABSTRACT

Objective To summarise the imaging features of rare mastitis and explore the diagnostic value of ultrasound, mammography and MRI for rare mastitis. Methods The record of 24 patients diagnosed as rare mastitis in our hospital from Jan. 2000 to Jun. 2009 was reviewed, including clinical manifestations, pathological results, imaging diagnosis and diagnostic accurate rate. Results Of the 24 patients, 14 patients were ductal ectasia with chronic mastitis, 3 granulomatous mastitis, 6 chronic abscess and 1 mammary tuberculosis. 13 patients underwent ultrasonic scan, 12 patients underwent mammography and 3 patients underwent MRI, with the diagnostic accurate rate 77%, 25% and 100% respectively. Conclusions There are no special imaging manifestations for most rare mastitis, however, some differential characteristics still exist. MRI has a higher accuracy compared to ultrasound and mammography. The combination of multiple imaging methods can improve diagnostic accuracy.

ABSTRACT

Objective To investigate the role of apoptosis-related gene survivin, caspase-3 and cyclin-B1 in gastric carcinoma by detecting the expressions of survivin, caspase-3 and cyclin-B1 in gastric carcinoma. Methods The expressions of survivin mRNA, caspase-3 mRNA and cyclin-B1 mRNA were determined by reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) method in 30 gastric carcinoma specimens and 10 normal gastric tissue specimens. Results The positive expression rate of survivin mRNA in 30 gastric carcinoma specimens was 66.7%(20/30). While 10 normal gastric tissue specimens did not express survivin mRNA. Although all of 30 gastric carcinoma tissues and 10 normal gastric tissues expressed caspase-3 mRNA and cyclin-B1 mRNA, the expressions of caspase-3 and cyclin-B1 in 20 survivin-positive gastric carcinoma tissues were significantly lower than those of 10 survivin-negative gastric carcinoma tissues (P

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVETo study the long-term clinical results of 34 chronic duodenal ulcer patients treated with high selective vagotomy plus pylorus-preserved mucosal antrectomy (HSV + PPMA).

METHODSClinical follow-up results of the patients from 8 approximately 14 years were analyzed.

RESULTSThirty-tow patients (94.1%) followed-up for 8 approximately 14 years after operation achieved Visick grades I-II. No patient died. Gastric acid secretion and infection rate of Helicobacter pylori in the antral mucosa were significantly reduced after operation. No significant difference was found in bile acids, total bacterial counts in gastric juice, and the level of serum gastrin after operation. Gastric emptying was normal. No ulcer recurrence was found by barium meal and endoscopy.

CONCLUSIONSHSV + PPMA is a better operative treatment for duodenal ulcer, which not only can decrease acid secretion and ulcer recurrence rate but also can preserve the function of antrum and pylorus and prevent post-operation bile reflux and intragastric bacterial overgrowth.

ABSTRACT

Objective To evaluate operative effect on internal rectal prolapse. Methods Sixty-two patients with internal rectal prolapse who underwent operation were studied by retrospectively analyzing the treatment and followed up results. Results The total success rate of surgical treatment for internal rectal prolapse is 73%. The rate of symptoms improvement as difficulty in defecation, anal aboating, incomplete defecation, asistation with fingers, and defecating dependent on laxatives were 77%,80%,71%,86%,97% respectively. Conclusion the operative indications of internal rectal prolapse should be strictly controlled. Only those who received standard conservative treatment and failed to improve should be a candidate for surgery.
