ABSTRACT

Purpose@#This study was conducted to identify the factors influencing the posttraumatic growth (PTG) in patients with lung cancer and to provide basic data for nursing intervention development to improve PTG and adaptation. @*Methods@#The study included 126 non-small cell lung cancer patients initially diagnosed at the Lung Cancer Center, C University Hospital in S city, Gyeonggi-do. Patients were asked to complete a questionnaire consisting of demographic characteristics, disease characteristics, posttraumatic growth, cancer coping, social support, and resilience. Data were analyzed using t-tests, ANOVA, and Pearson's correlation and multiple regression analysis. @*Results@#The mean score for PTG in lung cancer patients was 56.39, cancer coping was 61.31, social support was 61.09, and resilience was 92.77. Significant positive correlations were found for PTG and cancer coping (r=.75, p<.001), social support (r=.52, p<.001) and resilience (r=.63, p<.001). Factors contributing to PTG of lung cancer patients were cancer coping (β=.53 p<.001), perceived health status(β=.20, p=.002), resilience (β=.21, p=.010) and importance of religion (β=.15, p=.013). This model explained about 64.0% of variances of PTG (F=29.58, p<.001). @*Conclusion@#It is necessary to develop new nursing intervention programs to improve PTG for patients with lung cancer based on strategies to enhance coping and resilience to recovery. Longitudinal studies examining temporal changes in PTG among patients with lung cancer are suggested for future studies in this regard.

ABSTRACT

This study was performed to evaluate the effect of cyclic precalcification treatment on the improvement of bioactivity of Ti-6Al-4V mini-screws. The cutted plate-shaped specimens of 10 mm × 10 mm dimensions, and a mini-screw with a diameter of 1.6 mm × 6.0 mm in length were used. Anodic oxidation treatment was carried out in a glycerol electrolyte solution containing 20 wt% H2O and 1.5 wt% NH 4F. Voltage of 20 V with current density of 20 mA/cm2 was applied for 1 hour to form a nanotube TiO2 layer. Afterwards, to improve the bioactivity, specimens were immersed in 0.5 vol% silica aqueous solution at 37 ℃ for 5 minutes, and then cyclic precalcification treatment with 0.05 M NH 4H2PO4and 0.01 M Ca(OH)2 solution at 90 ℃ was repeated with 20 times. Based on surface treatment the experimental groups were divided into three groups, namely untreated group (UT), anodized and heat-treated group (AH), and anodized, silica-treated, cyclic precalcified and heat-treated group (ASPH). There were TiO2 nanotubes completely self-aligned and formed in a dense structure on the surface after anodic oxidation treatment. A fine granular cluster layer of hydroxyapatite and octacalcium phosphate were formed on the surface after the cyclic precalcification treatment. As a result of immersion test in the simulated body fluid (SBF), bioactivity was confirmed to be improved by the precipitation of protrusions appearing at the initial stage of formation of hydroxyapatite.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: We investigated the expression of glucose uptake transporter-1 (GLUT-1) and epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) in the head and neck squamous cell cancer (HNSCC) and their influence on survival rate. We also aimed to demonstrate the relationships between the expressions of GLUT-1 and EGFR and the maximal standardized uptake values (mSUV) of fluorine-18 fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography (FDG-PET). SUBJECTS AND METHOD: Surgical specimens from 50 patients with HNSCC, who had undergone surgical intervention, were first processed for tissue array and then for immunochemistry for GLUT-1 and EGFR. Expressions of GLUT-1 and EGFR were analyzed according to the differentiation of tumor, T & N stage and invasiveness of the tumor etc. The relationship between PET-mSUV and the expressions of EGFR and GLUT-1 was evaluated as well as its possibility as a prognostic factor of SUV. RESULTS: The expression of EGFR was significantly high in the lymph node of the positive group. Associated with the expression of GLUT-1, a tendency of increased index score (IS) values in the advanced T stages was observed but it was not statistically significant. The mSUV in FDG-PET showed statistically significant association with the maximal tumor size (pearson correlation 0.569, p=0.023); however, no association with GLUT-1 and EGFR was observed. A universal strong expression of GLUT-1 could have made it difficult to figure out statistically significant correlations. Disease free survival was to be influenced by T stage, moderate and poor differentiation and GLUT-1 expression. Only the T stages had independent significance in the multivariate analysis using the Cox regression model. CONCLUSION: We found that the expression of GLUT-1 could not show statistically significant correlation with PET-mSUV. Since the expression of EGFR has significant correlation with lymph node metastasis, EGFR may have the possibility of being a target for anticancer molecular therapy.

ABSTRACT

The spontaneous rupture of the ureter is a rare condition. Two cases are reported with a spontaneous rupture caused by ureteral calculi. The diagnosis was suspected by delayed post-CT KUB and confirmed by ureteroscopy. On the basis of the clinical evolution the authors discuss the diagnosis and pathogenesis of the observed ureteral rupture. Rupture of ureter must be considered as differential diagnosis of acute flank pain, especially when there is change of pain character or severity.

ABSTRACT

We report a 47-year-old man who presented with acute right leg pain without any other symptoms on visit to ER. But he had the severe back pain when the leg pain developed. Contrast CT revealed no enhancement on right common iliac artery and aortic dissection from the lower level of right renal artery to the iliac artery bifurcation. Angiographic stent insertion was performed immediately, but the patient showed reperfusion syndrome and died after 3 days. Aortic dissection with the isolated peripheral vascular complications is rare. Aortic dissection should be included in the differential diagnosis of patients with acute lower leg ischemia like peripheral arterial occlusive disease.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: Infection by Haemophilus influenzae Type B(Hib) occurs most often in infants and children who are 5 years old and less. The incidence is highest around 6 months of age, and then decreases thereafter as infants gain natural immunity. Hi PRP-D conjugate vaccine is poorly immunogenic in infants. However, immunogenicity PRP-D vaccine in Korean infants is unknown. This study was carried out to evaluate the immunogenicity of PRP-D in Korean infants. METHODS: Forty-two normal infants who were born in Hanil General Hospital from February 1994 to July 1995 were vaccinated at 2, 4, 6, 15 months after birth. The serum antibody level was measured at 2, 6, 7, 15, 16 months of age. The infants also received DTaP, TOPV at 2, 4, 6 months and MMR at 15 months. Anti-PRP antibody level was measured by radioimmnune assay at Dana Faber Cancer Institute in Boston, U.S.A. RESULTS: The geometric mean of Anti-PRP antibody titers were 0.074microgram/ml at 2 months, 0.185 microgram/ml at 6 months, 1.390microgram/ml at 7 months, and then fell to 0.501microgram/ml at 15 months(Mean values are geometric mean; L=512, P=0.0001). Anti-PRP antibody titers increased in proportion to the number of vaccinations. The proportion of infants with anti-PRP antibody titers> OR =0.15microgram/ml were 15.8% at 2 months, 44.7% at 6 months, and 94.7% at 7 months. The proportion of infants with anti-PRP antibody titers> OR =1.0microgram/ml were 2.6% at 2 months, 26.3% at 6 months, and 57.9% at 7 months(X2 test; total: X2=27.64, P<0.01; male: X2=23.05, P<0.01; female: X2=48.55, P<0.01). CONCLUSION: The immunogenicity of PRP-D conjugate vaccine may be more effective in young Korean infants than in other population published in studies. The clinical implication of good responsiveness of Korean infants to PRP-D vaccine needs further evaluations.
