ABSTRACT

Osteocalcin (OCN) regulates the physiological structure and function of various peripheral tissues and organs, and plays a central regulatory role, which is tightly associated with higher-level cognitive functions such as learning and memory. Studies have shown that OCN can enter the central nervous system through the blood-brain barrier and bind to GPR158 and GPR37, members of the G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) family on the membrane of neurons or glial cells, activate or inhibit relevant intracellular signalling pathways, and then change the physiological activities of neurons or glial cells. In the brain, the role of OCN mainly includes regulating the synthesis and release of neurotransmitters such as serotonin, dopamine, norepinephrine and γ-aminobutyric acid, increasing the expression of brain-derived neurotrophic factor, promoting hippocampal neurogenesis, enhancing hippocampal neuron autophagy and maintaining myelin homeostasis, among others. Furthermore, OCN can also be involved in the regulation of the pathophysiological process of multiple neurodegenerative diseases. In Alzheimer's disease (AD), OCN treatment reduces β-amyloid protein (Aβ) deposition and Aβ-induced cytotoxicity in part, thereby improving learning and memory deficits; in Parkinson's disease (PD), OCN treatment inhibits the loss of substantia nigra and striatum dopaminergic neurons, increases the content of tyrosine hydroxylase and decreases neuroinflammation, thereby alleviating motor dysfunction. By analyzing the structure and function of GPR158 and GPR37, analyzing the role of OCN in the brain and its biological mechanism, and exploring the effect of OCN on neurodegenerative diseases such as AD and PD, this paper aims to provide a basis for further screening new targets to promote brain health.

ABSTRACT

Objective@#To explore the dietary patterns and related factors among urban middle school students in Guangzhou, and to provide the scientific reference for conducting nutritional education and intervention among the middle school students.@*Methods@#Questionnaire survey was conducted for students in two grades (grade 1 of 27 junior and senior high schools) and their parents along with the physical examination for urban primary and secondary school students in Guangzhou. Dietary patterns were established by exploratory factor analysis. Multinomial Logistic regression model was used for analyzing influencing factors of dietary pattern.@*Results@#Three major dietary patterns were identified. Type I (37.09%) was a healthy dietary pattern; type II (33.37%) and III (29.54%) were classified into western dietary patterns. Multinomial Logistic regression models showed that living on campus (ORⅡ=1.57, 95%CI:1.33-1.85; ORⅢ=1.28, 95%CI:1.07-1.52), screen time≥2 h/d (ORⅡ=2.89, 95%CI:2.51-3.33; ORⅢ=2.14, 95%CI:1.85-2.48) were positively associated with type II and III. The monthly household income per capita≥5 000 yuan (ORⅢ=1.31, 95%CI:1.14-1.51) was positively associated with type III. Senior students (ORⅡ=0.83, 95%CI:0.73-0.95; ORⅢ=0.74, 95%CI:0.64-0.85), the level of parental education (ORⅡ=0.64, 95%CI:0.52-0.79; ORⅡ=0.67, 95%CI:0.54-0.82; ORⅢ=0.72, 95%CI:0.58-0.90; ORⅢ=0.73, 95%CI:0.59-0.89) had a negative association with type II and III.@*Conclusion@#There are three dietary patterns among urban middle school students in Guangzhou. The main influencing factors include parental education, screen time, grade, resident situation, and monthly household income per capita.

ABSTRACT

Objective To examine the clinical effect of heat sensitive moxibustion in treating simple obesity with spleen-kidney deficiency type.Methods Ninety simple obesity patients with spleen-kidney deficiency type were randomized into a acupuncture group,a heat sensitive moxibustion group and a combination group,with 30 cases in each group.The heat sensitive moxibustion group was given moxibustion by self-made heat sensitive moxa stick.Heat sensitization acupoints were sought at patients' lumbosacral portion and hypogastrium.Two or three heat sensitization acupoints were selected each time.Patients were treated for 5 times each week,each time for 45min.In the acupuncture group,acupoints of Zhongwan (RN12),Shuifen (RN9),Qihai (RN6),Guanyuan (RN4),Mingmen (DU4),Yaoyangguan (DU3),bilateral Tianshu (ST25),Daheng (SP15),Daimai (GB26),Pishu (BL20),Weishu (21) and Shuidao (ST28) were selected.Seven to ten acupoints were selected each time.Even reinforcingreducing method was used.Needle was retained for 30min.During needle retention,manipulating the needles once every 10min.Patients were treated by 5 times each week.The combination group was given both acupuncture and heat sensitive moxibustion.The methods were the same as above.One month was a course.Each group was treated for 3 courses.Patients' body weight,waistline and height were recorded before and after treatment.Body mass index (BMI),body fat percent and waist to height ratio were calculated before and after treatment.The clinical effect was evaluated.Results After treatment,body weight,BMI,body fat percent and waist to height ratio in each group decreased (P < 0.05).After treatment,body weight,BMI,body fat percent and waist to height ratio in the combination group was lower than those in the acupuncture group and the heat sensitive moxibustion group (P < 0.05);while the difference between the acupuncture group and the heat sensitive moxibustion group was not significant (P >0.05).The total effective rate in the acupuncture group was 73.3%,with 76.7% in the heat sensitive moxibustion group,and 86.7% in the combination group.The clinical effect in the combination group was superior to that in the acupuncture group and in the heat sensitive moxibustion group.Conclusion Heat sensitive moxibustion therapy might be effective in treating simple obesity with spleen-kidney deficiency type.Moreover,the clinical effect seemed better if combined with acupuncture.

Objective:To summarize the reason and treatment of ventricular electrical storm (VES) in adult patients after cardiac surgery.Methods:A total of 36 adult patients with VES after cardiac surgery in our hospital from 2011-08 to 2015-05 were retrospectively analyzed for their peri-operative and clinical conditions before and after VES occurrence.Results:All 36 patients suffered from VES after cardiac surgery during ICU stay including 23 patients with coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG),5 with CABG and ventricular aneurysm resection,5 with valve replacement,2 with Bentall operation and 1 with Marrow operation.There were 32/36 (88.89%) patients out of the breathing machine upon VES disappearing and discharged smoothly,4 (11.11%) patients died of multiple organ failure.There were 22 (61.11%) patients with myocardium ischemia induced VES.32 patients were followed-up for 1 year,28/36 (77.78%) patients recovered to sinus rhythm,2 (5.56%) received endocardial pacemaker placement and 2 (5.56%) suffered from atrial fibrillation;no cardiac death during follow-up period.Conclusion:VES was often occurred at the early stage in adult patients after cardiac surgery;it usually had clear reason or inducement,rapid and efficient treatment could achieve satisfactory results.

ABSTRACT

Objective To explore the effects of percutaneous impulsive current stimulation in hepatic region on the activity of hepatic mitochondrial Na+-K+-ATPase and Ca2+-Mg2+-ATPase in exercise-induced fatigued rats, in order to investigate the effect of exercise-induced fatigue. Methods Seventy-two 8-week old male Wistar rats were randomly divided into 4 groups (18 each): control group (group A), fatigue group (group B), stimulation before fatigue group (group C) and stimulation after fatigue group (group D). Exhaustion of animals in B, C and D groups were reproduced by prolonged swimming. Current stimulation (1024Hz, 10mA, current cycle 1sec) for 20 minutes was given to the rats of group C before swimming, and to those in group D after exhaustion. At the weekend of 1st, 3rd and 5th week after modeling, the rats were sacrificed in batches from each group (6 each). The activities of hepatic mitochondrial Na+-K+-ATPase and Ca2+-Mg2+-ATPase were determined by spectrophotometry, and Bradfood protein quantification was employed to quantitate the protein in rats' hepatic mitochondria. Results No significant difference was found in swimming-exhaustion time among 3 groups at the first weekend (P>0.05), while the swimming-exhaustion time was significantly prolonged at the 3rd and 5th weekends in group D than in group B and C (P+-K+-ATPase and Ca2+-Mg2+-ATPase among the 4 groups (including group A) at the weekend of the 1st week (P>0.05), while the enzyme activities were obviously lower at the 3rd and 5th weekend in group B than that in groups A, C and D (P+-K+-ATPase and Ca2+-Mg2+-ATPase. Percutaneous pulsive current stimulating hepatic region of exercise-induced fatigued rats may improve the enzyme activity, reduce the concentration of free calcium and calcium overload in mitochondria, stimulate the oxidative phosphorylation, accelerate the rate of respiratory chain, promote exercise endurance and score, and relieve exercise-induced fatigue rapidly.

ABSTRACT

<p><b>OBJECTIVE</b>The aim of this study is to evaluate the clinical significance of High-risk Human Papilloma virus DNA Detection Kit (Cervista HPV HR) designed to the utilized in cervical cancer screening programs.</p><p><b>METHODS</b>The investigation for Cervista HPV HR test is designed to detect 437 residual liquid-based cytology specimens collected during routine liquid-based Pap tests at standard care vistis and to identify the presence of HR HPV. We compared Cervista HPV HR Test against standard PCR, in order to examine the performance of Cervista HPV HR Test in populations with cervical intraepithelial neoplasia grade 2+ (CIN 2, CIN 3 and Cancer, CIN 2+), and the capabilities of A5/A6, A7, A9 oligonucleotides of Cervista for predicting CIN2+.</p><p><b>RESULTS</b>The accuracy of Cervista compared to PCR with bi-directional sequencing was 88.26%. The positive percent of Cervista HPV HR Test and PCR were 38.96% and 29.08%, respectively. The sensitivity, specificity, negative predictive value (NPV) and positive predictive value (PPV) of Cervista HPV HR Test for the detection of CIN2+ were 98.46%, 58.49%, 99.54% and 29.68%, respectively. The A9 oligonucleotides positivity percent was significantly higher in CIN2 + (odds ratio: 24.037, 95% CI: 10.086 - 57.283).</p><p><b>CONCLUSION</b>The Cervista HPV HR test can be clinically used for detecting HR HPV types during routine cervical cancer screening. A9 oligonucleotides were also strongly associated with CIN2+ diagnosis, which is improtant in cervical cancer screening for triage to colposcopy.</p>

ABSTRACT

<p><b>OBJECTIVE</b>To investigate and evaluate the effectiveness of neuroendoscopic therapy for arachnoid cysts of middle cranial fossa.</p><p><b>METHODS</b>From January 2004 to June 2009, 32 patients with arachnoid cysts of middle cranial fossa who were treated with endoscopic cystocisternal fenestration were retrospectively analyzed. There were 21 male patients and 11 female patients, aged from 6 months to 39 years. The clinical and neuroradiological presentation, indications, surgical technique, complications, and clinical and neuroradiological follow-up were analyzed.</p><p><b>RESULTS</b>The cysts were reduced in size in 20 patients and completely disappeared in 4 patients. For the 27 patients with symptoms before operation, the symptoms disappeared in 8 cases and improved in 17 cases after operation. There were asymptomatic subdural hydroma in 4 patients, intracranial infection and incision cerebro-spinal fluid leakage in 1 patient respectively. The complication incidence rate was 18.8%.</p><p><b>CONCLUSIONS</b>Endoscopic fenestration is an effective treatment for symptomatic arachnoid cysts of middle cranial fossa and could be performed as the first surgical choice for these patients.</p>
