ABSTRACT

Neuroplasma of the Schwann cells origin occur only rarely in the nasal cavity, paranasal sinuses and nasopharynx. Schwannomas have also been termed as neuromas, neurinomas, neurofibroma, perineural fibroblastomas and perineural fibroma. Common symptoms include nasal obstruction, anosmia, epitasis, rhinorrhoea, headache facial pain, serous otitis media, and visual disturbance. Magnetic Resonance Imaging [MRI] and Computerized Tomographic [CT] Scanning are invaluable diagnostic tools to demonstrate and assess tumours of the nose and nasopharynx. We present the first reported case in Saudi Arabia of benign Schwannoma of the sino-nasal complex. Which was excised by endoscopic sinus surgery. Follow up for the past 2 years showed no recurrence in the nose and paranasal sinuses

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study is to compare Caldwell- Luc operation to Functional Endoscopy Sinus Surgery [FESS] in the treatment of fungal sinusitis associated with nasal polyps. Method: This is a retrospective study from January 1994 to June 2001, involving a series of 32 sinus procedures performed on adult patients. The study was carried out in a tertiary referral institution covering South Western region of Saudi Arabia with estimated population of about 3 million.During the period under review the mean age was 39 years. Eighteen patients underwent Galdwell- Luc operations with intranasal polypectomy while 14 patients had Functional Endoscopy Sinus Surgery [FESS]. It was found that the recurrent rate in patients who has Caldwell-Luc operations was about four times [4:1] higher than those who has functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery within the first 12 months. Conclusions: FESS was more efficient in the treatment of nasal polyposis with fungal infections

ABSTRACT

Human Immunedeficiency Virus/ Acquired Immunedeficiency Symdrome [HIV/AIDS] has assumed epidemic proportions. The disease is spreading at an alarming rate globally and it does not discriminate between race, gender or organs. Some features of this multi-organ disease are often missed by clinicians especially those working in busy centers; hence the need to frequently highlighting them. This review draws the attention of the otolaryngologist to the various manifestations of this infection in the Neck and Head region, where HIV disease is associated with a variety of problems and as high as 70% of HIV infected patients eventually develop such conditions. The review is grouped according to anatomic sites in order to facilitate retention and proper management
