ABSTRACT

T-helper (Th)17 cell responses are important for the development of neutrophilic inflammatory disease. Recently, we found that acetyl salicylic acid (ASA) inhibited Th17 airway inflammation in an asthma mouse model induced by sensitization with lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-containing allergens. To investigate the mechanism(s) of the inhibitory effect of ASA on the development of Th17 airway inflammation, a neutrophilic asthma mouse model was generated by intranasal sensitization with LPS plus ovalbumin (OVA) and then challenged with OVA alone. Immunologic parameters and airway inflammation were evaluated 6 and 48 h after the last OVA challenge. ASA inhibited the production of interleukin (IL)-17 from lung T cells as well as in vitro Th17 polarization induced by IL-6. Additionally, ASA, but not salicylic acid, suppressed Th17 airway inflammation, which was associated with decreased expression of acetyl-STAT3 (downstream signaling of IL-6) in the lung. Moreover, the production of IL-6 from inflammatory cells, induced by IL-17, was abolished by treatment with ASA, whereas that induced by LPS was not. Altogether, ASA, likely via its acetyl moiety, inhibits Th17 airway inflammation by blockade of IL-6 and IL-17 positive feedback.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To compare the clinical results between laparoscopically assisted vaginal hysterectomy (LAVH) and total abdominal hysterectomy (TAH). METHOD: 60 of LAVH cases and 60 of TAH cases, which were performed at Dankook university hospital from April 1998 to December 2000. We analyzed the results with regard to patient's characteristics, indication of hysterectomy, weight of uterus, operation time, blood loss, hospital stay and complications. RESULTS: Total 120 of hysterectomy cases (60 LAVH, 60 TAH) were enrolled in this study. All operations, LAVH and TAH, were performed by same surgeon. There were no significant differences in patient's characteristics (age, height, weight, parity) between the two groups. The main preoperative indication was myoma uteri, followed by adenomyosis, CIN III, for both LAVH and TAH. The mean uterine weight of TAH cases was larger than LAVH (214.8+/-88.1 gm for LAVH, 377.1+/-269.0 gm for TAH, p0.05). The hospital stay of LAVH was significantly shorter than TAH (4.9+/-0.6day for LAVH, 7.5+/-1.9day for TAH, p<0.05). CONCLUSION: In the comparison of LAVH and TAH operation, we conclude that LAVH can be considered as the first choice when determining hysterectomy method, unless contraindication prevents it. LAVH has advantages of shorter hospitalization and the acceptable complication rate.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: This study was performed to evaluate the efficacy of treating of unruptured ectopic pregnancy by systemic and transvaginal local administration of methotrexate. METHODS: We reviewed the medical records of 32 patients who were treated with methotrexate from June 1995 to October 1999. Among the patients, 14 were treated by ultrasound-guided transvaginal local injection and 18 were treated by systemic intramuscular administration. Success rate of the treatment was examined for each group, and the cases of methotrexate failure were characterized and compared with the success group. RESULTS: The success rate was similar between the transvaginal (85.7%) and the systemic (77.8%) groups. There were no differences in initial serum hCG levels, size of gestational sac, fetal cardiac activity between the success group and failure group. CONCLUSION: The results of this study suggest that there is no difference in efficacy between systemic and transvaginal local methotrexate administration, and there are no useful parameters in identifying the risk for the failure of methotrexate treatment.

ABSTRACT

Endometriosis at the site of episiotomy scar following vaginal delivery and abdominal scar following cesarean section are rare conditions among the extrapelvic endometriosis implantation. We have experienced five cases of extrapelvic endometriosis : four cases at the site of abdominal scar following cesarean section, and one case at the site of episiotomy scar following vaginal delivery. We report the five cases with brief review of the concerned literature.

ABSTRACT

Giant condyloma and carcinoma-like condyloma is relatively rare. Although it has histological similarities to condyloma acuminata, it is believed by most authorities to be a clearly defined variant of epidermoid carcinoma. Clinically it is easily mistaken for the more aggressive metastasing epidermoid carcinoma. The legion was first described by Buschke in the German literature in 1896. as a varient of condyloma acuminata. A case of malignancy of the penis which have apparently been transformed from giant condyloma acuminata of the penis are herein presented with review of literature.

ABSTRACT

Clinical observation on vesicoureteral reflux following renal tuberculosis were obtained 46 cases of renal tuberculosis seen at N. P. H. during the period from April 1971 to April 1975. 1) Demonstrable vesicoureteral reflux were 27 cases with cystogram, voiding cystogram, retrograde cystogram and I. V. P. 2) Retrograde cystogram showed a highest peak in occurrence of vesicoureteral reflux. 3) The incidence of bladder Tb. and vesicoureteral reflux secondary to renal Tb. among these patients, in 50% of the cases occurred from marked contracted bladder and 2% from the bladder having normal capacity. In the presence of renal Tb. and vesicoureteral reflux mentioned above, the most frequent observable change was in marked contracted bladder, and it showed that their incidence were increased by severity of extent of bladder contraction.

ABSTRACT

Most foreign bodies found in the bladder are inserted through the urethra. Abnormal psyche senility, inebriation, and eroticism are the most frequent causes for such induction. The following is a report of a male who slipped Nylon silk into the urethra during masturbation and lost it in the bladder while attempting to remove it.
