ABSTRACT

Objective:To explore the influence of gender and age on the measurement of cone beam CT (CBCT) in normal and occluded craniofacial hard tissues for Han nationality in Changsha area. Methods:A total of 80 CBCT data of normal and occluded craniofacial hard tissues for Han nationality in Changsha area were collected, including 40 adults [16 males and 24 females, aged (17.57±1.83) years] and 40 children[16 males and 24 females, age (11.50±1.26) years].Threedimensional cephalometric measurements were carried out by Dolphion Imaging software, and the influence of gender and age was compared. Results:The symmetry of craniofacial hard tissues in male and female in the adults was good (the maximum asymmetric rate R was 6.39% and the minimum asymmetric rate R was 0.08%).There was no significant differencein the anterior palatal width, palatal width, the upper incisor protrusion distance, the lower incisor protrusion distance,hyoid-mandibular plane, basal epiglottis width, and palatal plane airway width between the males and females (all P>0.05);while the remaining indicators were significantly higher in males than those in females (all P<0.05).There was no significant gender difference in angle indicators (all P>0.05).There were significant differences in the posterior height, the maxillary length, the lower incisor protrusion, and the mandibular plane angle between the adults and the children(all P<0.05);but the rest of indicators were not significant difference (all P>0.05).Conclusion:The symmetry of craniofacial hard tissues for Han nationality in Changsha area is good. The gender and age affect the line space measurements but not affect the most of the angle measurements.

ABSTRACT

To investigate three-dimensional morphological features of temporomandibular joint in skeletal malocclusion Class III with different vertical skeletal facial types.
Methods: A total of 46 adults with skeletal malocclusion Class III were enrolled and allocated into a normal-angle, a high-angle and a low-angle groups. All patients were undergone cone beam computed tomography (CBCT). Images of temporomandibular joint were reconstructed and analyzed by Invivo 5. Nine measurements relevant to the positions and forms of condyle as well as joint spaces were performed.
Results: Significant differences were not observed between the 2 sides of each group among skeletal malocclusion Class III (P>0.05). Compared with the high-angle and normal-angle patients, the low-angle patients had larger superior spaces, bigger gradients of the articular tublecle, longer condyle, and larger internal spaces between the condyle and the fossa. Compared with the low-angle and normal-angle patients, the high-angle patients had smaller condylar antero-posterior diameters.
Conclusion: Class III malocclusion patients with different vertical skeletal patterns have different positions and forms of condyles, which should be paid attention to in clinic.

ABSTRACT

Objective To explore lymphocyte differentially expressed protein profile and its pathogenic significance in Huaihua Dong peoples with hypertension. Methods The lymphocyte protein profiles among 130 cases of blood specimen were detected and identified with matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization/time of flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF-MS) and Mascot search against protein database. Results The reproducible protein-maps of two-dimensional gel electrophoresis were obtained among three groups.Compared with Dong normal peoples, the protein disulfide isomerase-related protein 5 and heat shock protein 27 showed higher expressions in the Dong peoples with hypertension (P < 0.01),but chain A,structure of haemoglobin in the deoxy quaternary state with ligand bound at the alpha haems is no statistical significance(P >0.05).Those three proteins were upregulated in Han peoples with hypertension (P <0.01).Conclusions The up-regulation of the protein disulfide isomerase-related protein 5 and heat shock protein 27 in the Dong and Han peoples with hypertension suggest that those two proteins might be associated with the occurrence and development of hypertension.

ABSTRACT

Objective To observe the correlation between telomerase activity and apoptosis in HeLa cells induced by influenza viruses. Methods HeLa cells were observed in the electron microscope after they had been infected by influenza viruses type A1,B and an UV exposed strain respectively.Besides,Annexin V-FITC staining flow cytometry(FCM)and PCR-ELISA were used to detect cell apoptosis and telomerase activity in HeLa cells respectively. Results The maximal rate of apoptotic cells induced by influenza virus type B and A1 were 38.65% and 23.94% respectively(P

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVETo evaluate the response rate and adverse reactions of xeloda, an analogue of 5-fluorouracil, in the treatment of relapsed and metastatic breast cancer.

METHODSTwenty-two breast cancer patients who had recurrent and metastatic measurable foci were treated from Dec. 1999 to Feb. 2000. Xeloda was given, as a single drug, at a dose of or 2,510 mg/m2/d, bid, for two weeks followed by one week rest as one cycle, at least for one cycle in each patient.

RESULTSAmong these 22 patients, there was no complete response. Rates of partial response 8(36.4%), stable disease 10(45.5%), progressive disease 4(18.2%), and clinical benefit response (CR + PR + SD) 18(81.8%). The response rate in patients who had failed in previous chemotherapy of taxanes and/or anthracycline was 30.0%-33.3%. The common adverse reactions were hand-foot syndrome, skin pigmentation, nausea, vomiting, anorexia and fatigue. Mild-moderate anemia and leukopenia were observed in 36.4% of patients. Stomatitis, dizziness, diarrhea and chest distress were present in some. One patient developed degree IV myelosuppression. Total bilirubin and alanine transaminase (ALAT) mild elevation occurred in a few patients.

CONCLUSIONXeloda is an effective drug in the treatment of patients with relapsed and metastatic breast cancer, especially for those who have failed in chemotherapy with taxanes and/or anthracycline. Xeloda is well tolerated but has mild adverse reactions.
