ABSTRACT

PURPOSE@#The bond strengths between resin denture teeth with various compositions and denture base resins including conventional and CAD/CAM purposed materials were evaluated to find influence of each material. @*MATERIALS AND METHODS@#Cylindrical rods (6.0 mm diameter × 8.0 mm length) prepared from pre-polymerized CAD/CAM denture base resin blocks (PMMA Block-pink; Huge Dental Material, Vipi Block-Pink; Vipi Industria) were bonded to the basal surface of resin teeth from three different companies (VITA MFT® ; VITA Zahnfabrik, Endura Posterio® ; SHOFU Dental, Duracross Physio® ; Nissin Dental Products Inc.) using resin cement (Super-Bond C&B; SUN MEDICAL). As a control group, rods from a conventional heat-polymerizing denture base resin (Vertex™ Rapid Simplified; Vertex-Dental B.V. Co.) were attached to the resin teeth using the conventional flasking and curing method. Furthermore, the effect of air abrasion was studied with the highly cross-linked resin teeth (VITA MFT® ) groups. The shear bond strengths were measured, and then the fractured surfaces were examined to analyze the mode of failure. @*RESULTS@#The shear bond strengths of the conventional heat-polymerizing PMMA denture resin group and the CAD/CAM denture base resin groups were similar. Air abrasion to VITA MFT® did not improve shear bond strengths. Interfacial failure was the dominant cause of failure for all specimens. @*CONCLUSION@#Shear bond strengths of CAD/CAM denture base materials and resin denture teeth using resin cement are comparable to those of conventional methods.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: This study was performed in order to assess the effect of the surface treatment methods and the use of bonding agent on the shear bond strength (SBS) between the aged CAD-CAM (computer aided design-computer aided manufacturing) hybrid materials and added composite resin. MATERIALS AND METHODS: LAVA Ultimate (LU) and VITA ENAMIC (VE) specimens were age treated by submerging in a 37℃ water bath filled with artificial saliva (Xerova solution) for 30 days. The surface was ground with #220 SiC paper then the specimens were divided into 9 groups according to the combination of the surface treatment (no treatment, grinding, air abrasion with aluminum oxide, HF acid) and bonding agents (no bonding, Adper Single Bond 2, Single Bond Universal). Each group had 10 specimens. Specimens were repaired (added) using composite resin (Filtek Z250), then all the specimens were stored for 7 days in room temperature distilled water. SBS was measured and the fractured surfaces were observed with a scanning electron microscope (SEM). One-way ANOVA and Scheffe test were used for statistical analysis (α=.05). RESULTS: Mostly groups with bonding agent treatment showed higher SBS than groups without bonding agent. Among the groups without bonding agent the groups with aluminum oxide treatment showed higher SBS. However there was no significant difference between groups except two subgroups within LU group, which revealed a significant increase of SBS when Single Bond Universal was used on the ground LU specimen. CONCLUSION: The use of bonding agent when repairing an aged LAVA Ultimate restoration is recommended.

ABSTRACT

18 trisomy(Edwards syndrome) is a fatal disease with a congenital heart anomaly. Patients usually receive less aggressive care because caregivers expect them to die very young. Although they have a very poor prognosis due to severe multi-organ dysfunction, symptomatic simple cardiac anomaly with left to right shunt can be repaired. We experienced a case of 18 trisomy with ventricular septal defect and patent ductus arteriosus. He showed prolonged dyspnea and tachypnea after the ligation of patent ductus arteriosus in a previous hospital. In our hospital, the ventricular septal defect was closed because his parents insisted on aggressive treatment. After surgery, the symptoms were relieved and he was discharged in a condition satisfactory to his parents and the medical team.
