ABSTRACT

Mucocele and traumatic neuroma are two lesions related to the traumatic events; however there is only one reported case in which these two entities were perceived simultaneously. The current study reported a 21-year-old man who complained of painless recurrent swelling, accompanied by paresthesia on his left lower labial mucosa. He had a previous history of similar lesion and had been treated with surgery and cauterization last year. The primary clinical impression was a recurrent mucocele. Microscopic surveys displayed a traumatic neuroma in the vicinity of a mucocele which seems to be arising from the previous surgical treatment

ABSTRACT

In spite of equal contribution of female and male faculty members to knowledge and expertise production, there is no equal access to managerial posts. The purpose of this study was to determine the present attitudes of female faculty towards the barriers to their promotion to managerial posts in Shahid Sadoughi University of Medical Sciences [SSUMS]. This cross-sectional study was conducted on female faculty in [SSUMS] in 2011. A standard questionnaire consisting of demographic questions and 37 questions about the barriers to the promotion of female faculty to managerial posts was used. Overall 28% of women in this study had managerial positions at different levels. Among them, 44.4% were head of the departments. There was a significant correlation between managerial posts and job experience [p<0.05]. Incorrect organizational structure, organizational culture and social factors were the main barriers to the promotion of women to managerial posts, however; individual factors appeared to play no role in this regard. A few female faculties of [SSUMS] were engaged in managerial positions which might be due to incorrect organizational structure and social factors. The findings presented in this paper suggest that modification of promotion instructions based on competence and changes in organizational structure and culture may increase the engagement of female faculty in managerial posts

Cementoblastoma is a rare neoplasm accounting for less than 1% of all odontogenic tumors. It mostly arises in the mandible but rarely in the maxilla. ABSTRACT

Intraoral minor salivary glands tumors [MSGT] are uncommon, with geographic variations in frequency and distribution. This study analyzed the clinic-pathologic features of these tumors in Shiraz, southern Iran. All of cases histopathologically recorded as epithelial MSGT in Pathology Department of Khalili Hospital from 2002 to 2009 were evaluated with regard to patient's age and gender, tumor location and type, retrospectively. Out of 82 cases of MSGT, 53.7% were benign and 46.3% were malignant. Pleomorphic adenoma and adenoid cystic carcinoma were the most common benign and malignant tumors, respectively. The palate was the most common site of involvement [64.6%]. Male to female ratio was 1:1.27. The mean age of the patients was 35.0 +/- 17.2 years for benign and 48.8 +/- 18.2 years for malignant tumors. MSGTs in the present study represent many characteristics of other studies. However, our patients who were affected by benign tumors were young

ABSTRACT

A correct diagnosis is the first step of treatment. The correspondence of clinical and histopathologic diagnosis is an indicator of the correct opinion of the surgeons and pathologists in diagnosis. This study aimed to evaluate the agreement rate of clinical diagnosis and histopathologic reports of the patients referring to oral pathology department of Shiraz dental school from 2001-2006. in an analytic, retrospective study on 613 files of patients from the archive of oral pathology department, data on the age, site and surgeon were collected and analyzed by SPSS software using Chi-square test. Eighty one percent of the clinical diagnoses were confirmed with the pathologic reports. The greatest concordance was observed in the 8[th] decade and the lowest, in the first decade of life. The highest percentage of correct diagnosis was found in the vestibular mucosa, and the lowest in the palate. The highest percentage of agreement was observed for the mucocele and reactive soft tissue lesions, and the lowest for the benign nonodontogenic tumors and epithelial lesions. According to these results, more effective education, the exact clinical examination of the patients and more surgeon-pathologist correlations are necessary

ABSTRACT

Squamous cell carcinoma [SCC] is the most common malignancy in the oral cavity. Angiogenesis is essential for development and progression of SCC. Recently, some studies have reported that mast cells play a role in tumor progression, via promoting angiogenesis. The aim of this study was to determine CD31 [an endothelial marker] expression and mast cell count in oral dysplastic lesions and SCC. The CD31 expression and mast cell count were investigated in paraffin-embedded specimens of 10 cases of fibroma [control group], 10 cases of epithelial dysplasia, and 20 cases of SCC. CD31 expression was examined by IHC and mast cell count was evaluated by Giemsa staining. The mean of CD31 expression did not show any significant difference between groups, but in the tumors, peritumoral stroma revealed a significantly higher CD31 expression than intratumoral stroma. A significant difference in the mast cell count was observed between the groups and between peri-and intratumoral stroma of SCCs. The mean of CD31 expression and mast cell count did not show any correlation. Pre-and posttreatment studies and double staining methods are suggested for more definitive results

ABSTRACT

Orofacial tumors are a heterogeneous group of lesions having various histological types and clinical behavior. The prevalence and clinical behavior of some pathologic lesions is different in various populations. The aim of this study was to determine the type and distribution of orofacial tumors among patients referred to the Oral Pathology Departments of Shiraz Dental School and Chamran Hospital in Iran. In this retrospective case series study, data on the type, age, sex and site of tumors in 2343 patients with orofacial lesions in the period from 1991-2008 were collected and analyzed, using SPSS13. In this study, 300 [12.8%] tumors were found among the subjects. The most common types of benign and malignant tumors were odontoma and langerhans cell histiocytosis in children and adolescents, and unicystic ameloblastoma and squamous cell carcinoma in the adults, respectively. The most common site of tumors in soft tissue was gingiva and in the jaws it was the posterior part of the mandible. The observed differences in the tumor type and distribution in this study compared with the previous studies, in addition to design and methods of the study, may be attributed to genetic and geographic variations in the population. Therefore, more extensive investigations are recommended to achieve more information about these lesions which can be used for assessment of patients
