ABSTRACT

Neospora caninum is an apicomplexan protozoa, which causes abortion in cattle worldwide. The present study was designed to estimate the rate of transplacental transmission of N.caninum to aborted fetuses in seropositive dams in dairy farms in Mashhad area, Iran. Two hundred blood samples of dam with aborted bovine fetuses were collected from dairy farms from 2008 to 2010. First, the maternal sera in each aborted case were tested by using ELISA method, and then the brain samples of aborted fetuses were examined for detecting DNA of N. caninum, using the PCR method. In this study, 38 [19%] of dams' sera showed seropositive reaction against N.caninum infection, and also 23 [10.5%] aborted brain fetuses showed positive reaction by PCR. A significant association was observed between N.caninum-serapositie dams and infected aborted fetuses [p<0.0001]. In the present study, 20 [86%] infected fetuses were aborted from seropositive, and 3 [13%] of the fetuses were aborted from seronegative dams. Based on the results of molecular and serology examination, the rate of transplacental transmission of N. caninum infection in dairy cattle were calculated as 52%

ABSTRACT

The 153Sm-[tris[1, 10-phenanthroline] Samarium[III]]complex [153Sm-PL3] was prepared in view of development of targeting therapeutic compounds for malignancies, and interesting in-vitro anti-tumor activities of lanthanide phenanthroline complexes,. Sm-153 chloride was obtained by thermal neutron flux [4 × 1013 n.cm- 2.s-1] of enriched 152Sm2O3 sample, dissolved in acidic media. The labeling was performed in ethanol in 24h, controlled by ITLC [1.0mM DTPA, pH.5, as mobile phase]. The partition coefficient for the labeled compound was also determined. Results: A radiochemical yield of more than 95% was obtained. Radiochemical purity of 96% was obtained using ITLC with specific activity of about 27.75 GBq/mg. The radio-labeled complex was stable in aqueous solution at least 24 hours and no significant amount of free 153Sm was released from the complex. The partition coefficient for the labeled compound was determined [log P. 3.4]. The complex was stable in final formulation for 66h. The biological evaluation of the compound is under investigation. The radiolabeled compound used in this study was a very inexpensive and useful agent for the use as a therapeutic compound

ABSTRACT

An aborted female Holstein foetus with marked generalized anasarca was referred to the Excellence Centre for Ruminant Abortion and Neonatal Mortality, Ferdowsi University of Mashhad. On postmortem examination, red-tinged ascites, pale and firm liver with extreme irregularity and numerous round to oval slightly raised foci on the capsular surface were seen. Histological examination revealed widespread fibrosis, linkage of periportal areas to the central vein region and proliferation of bile ductules forming a branching network within the fibrous tissue. The lesion was diagnosed as congenital hepatic fibrosis
