ABSTRACT

Radiation resistance is an important factor that affects the efficacy of radiotherapy; it could even lead to its failure. In recent years, the relationship between the classical Wnt signaling pathway and radiation resistance has gradually attracted attention from scholars. Although most of the findings are comprehensive, they are fragmented and disorganized. This review explores the relationship between classical Wnt signaling pathways and cancer radiation resistance. Previous literature regarding the classical Wnt signaling pathways and cancer radiation resistance from the past decades had been summarized in this article. Moreover, the molecular mechanisms and functions of the canonical Wnt signaling pathway involved in the formation of radioresistance were systemically analyzed and sorted out. Certain rules and internal relationships among different pathways have been further clarified; this is expected to provide valuable clues for further research. The Wnt/β-catenin pathway is closely associated with the formation of cancer radioresistance, which may be a target for improving the effects of radiotherapy

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: To compare the characteristics of tubercular vs. leukemic involvement of abdominopelvic lymph nodes using multidetector computed tomography (CT). MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed multidetector computed tomography features including lymph node size, shape, enhancement patterns, and anatomical distribution, in 106 consecutive patients with newly diagnosed, untreated tuberculosis (55 patients; 52%) or leukemia (51 patients; 48%). In patients with leukemia, 32 (62.7%) had chronic lymphocytic leukemia, and 19 (37.3%) had acute leukemias; of these, 10 (19.6%) had acute myeloid leukemia, and 9 (17.6%) had acute lymphocytic leukemia. RESULTS: The lower para-aortic (30.9% for tuberculosis, 63.2% for acute leukemias and 87.5% for chronic lymphocytic leukemia) and inguinal (9.1% for tuberculosis, 57.9% for acute leukemias and 53.1% for chronic lymphocytic leukemia) lymph nodes were involved more frequently in the three types of leukemia than in tuberculosis (both with p <0.017). Tuberculosis showed peripheral enhancement, frequently with a multilocular appearance, in 43 (78.2%) patients, whereas patients with leukemia (78.9% for acute myeloid leukemia and acute lymphocytic leukemia, 87.5% for chronic lymphocytic leukemia) demonstrated predominantly homogeneous enhancement (both with p <0.017). For the diagnosis of tuberculosis, the analysis showed that a peripheral enhancement pattern had a sensitivity of 78.2%, a specificity of 100%, and an accuracy of 88.7%. For the diagnosis of leukemia, the analysis showed that a homogeneous enhancement pattern was associated with a sensitivity of 84.3%, a specificity of 94.5%, and an accuracy of 89.6%. CONCLUSION: Our findings indicate that the anatomical distribution and enhancement patterns of lymphadenopathy seen on multidetector computed tomography are useful for differentiating between untreated tuberculosis and leukemia of the abdominopelvic lymph nodes. .

ABSTRACT

This work aims to investigate the effect of fetal amnion-wrapped acellular allogenic nerve transplantation on peripheral nerve injury (PNI) in dogs and to explore its advantages and feasibility in PNI repair. A total of 15 dogs were divided into three groups: the allogenic nerve transplantation (A), amnion-wrapped allogenic nerve transplantation (B), and allogenic nerve donor (C) groups. Neurite counts after myelin and H-E stainings, soleus muscle action potentials, and sciatic nerve conductive velocities were compared between the A and B groups at 16 w after operation. The B group showed better nerve regeneration than the A group at 16 w. Compared with the A group, the B group showed a better growth continuity of the transplanted nerve and milder inflammatory reactions around the nerve. The B group presented much more proliferated Schwannocytes and regenerated nerve fibers than the A group. The neurite density and the amplitude of the soleus muscle action potentials in the B group were significantly higher than those in the A group (P < 0.05). The two groups did not show significant differences in nerve conductive velocities (P > 0.05). Amnion-wrapped acellular allogenic nerve transplantation can improve defected nerve morphology and the quality of transplanted nerve regeneration.

ABSTRACT

To investigate the preventive effect of epimedium-defivod phytoestrogen (PE) on osteoporosis induced by ovariectomy (OVX) in rats, 11-month-old female Wistar rats were randomly di- vided into Sham, OVX and PE groups. One week after OVX, daily oral administration of PE (0.4 g·kg-1·day·-1) started in PE group, and rats in Sham and OVX groups were given vehicle accordingly. The administrations lasted for 12 weeks. The biological markers including serum osteocalcin (OC) and urinary deoxypyridinoline (DPD) for bone turnover were evaluated at the end of the 12th week. On the 13th week, all the rats were sacrificed. The right proximal tibiae were removed, subjected to micro CT for determination of trabeonlar bone structure and then bone histomorphometry was per- formed to assess bone remodeling. The OVX rats were in a high bone turnover status as evidenced by increased bone formation markers and bone resorption markers. Treatment with PE could suppress the high bone turnover rate in OVX rats. Micro CT data revealed that PE treatment could ameliorate the deterioration of the micro-architecture of proximal tibiae induced by OVX, as demonstrated by greater bone volume, increased trabecular thickness and less trahecular separation in PE group in comparison with OVX group. The static and dynamic parameters of bone histomorphometry indi- cated that there were significant increases in bone formation variables and significant decreases in bone resorption variables between PE and OVX groups. The findings suggest that PE has a beneficial effect on trabecular bone in OVX rat model and this effect is possibly associated with stimulation of bone formation as well as inhibition of bone resorption.
