ABSTRACT

Objective: To investigate the association of the levels of high sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) with frailty and its components among the elderly over 65 years old in 9 longevity areas of China. Methods: Cross-sectional data from the Health Ageing and Biomarkers Cohort Study (HABCS, 2017-2018) were used and the elderly over 65 years old were included in this study. Through questionnaire interview and physical examination, the information including demographic characteristics, behavior, diet, daily activity, cognitive function, and health status was collected. The association between hs-CRP and frailty and its components in the participants was analyzed by multivariate logistic regression model and restrictive cubic spline. Results: A total of 2 453 participants were finally included, the age was (84.8±19.8) years old. The median hs-CRP level was 1.13 mg/L and the prevalence of frailty was 24.4%. Compared with the low-level group (hs-CRP<1.0 mg/L), the OR (95%CI) value of the high-level group (hs-CRP>3.0 mg/L) was 1.79 (1.35-2.36) mg/L. As for the components, the hs-CRP level was also positively associated with ADL disability, IADL disability, functional limitation and multimorbidity. After adjusting for confounding factors, compared with the low-level group, the OR (95%CI) values of the high-level group for the four components were 1.68 (1.25-2.27), 1.88 (1.42-2.50), 1.68 (1.31-2.14) and 1.39 (1.12-1.72), respectively. Conclusion: There is a positive association between the levels of hs-CRP and the risk of frailty among the elderly over 65 years old in 9 longevity areas of China. The higher hs-CRP level may increase the risk of frailty by elevating the risk of four physical functional disabilities, namely ADL disability, IADL disability, functional limitation and multimorbidity.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To analyze the clinical characteristics of Chenopodiaceae pollen induced seasonal allergic rhinitis (SAR) as well as the distribution and sensitization characteristics of Chenopodiaceae pollen in Inner Mongolia grassland of northern China. Methods: From May 2015 to August 2015, using stratified, cluster and random sampling, a field interviewer-administered survey study and skin prick test (SPT) were conducted in six areas of Inner Mongolia grassland (Xilinhot, Erenhot, Duolun, Tongliao, Jarud, Kailu), and pollen monitoring was carried out in the above six areas from January 1 to December 31 of 2015. The clinical characteristics of Chenopodiaceae pollen induced SAR, distribution and sensitization characteristics of Chenopodiaceae pollen in these regions were observed. SAS software 9.4 was used for data processing. Results: A total of 6 043 subjects completed the study. The prevalence of Chenopodiaceae pollen induced SAR was 13.2% (795/6 043). The highest prevalence was found in the 18-39 age group. Subjects from urban areas showed higher prevalence of SAR than rural areas (61.2% vs 37.9%, P<0.001). There was significant regional difference in the prevalence rate of Chenopodiaceae pollen induced SAR among the above six areas (Xilinhot 21.5%, Erenhot 17.8%, Duolun 8.9%, Tongliao 6.9%, Jarud 15.3%, Kailu 9.7%, P<0.001). The main clinical symptoms of Chenopodiaceae pollen induced SAR were sneezing (96.5%) and nasal itching (92.2%). Eye itching was more obvious among the ocular symptoms (69.1%), while fatigue (32.1%) and drowsiness (31.5%) were more prominent among other related symptoms. Among comorbidities of Chenopodiaceae pollen induced SAR, allergic conjunctivitis accounted for 71.4% (568/795), food allergy accounted for 86.7% (689/795) and asthma accounted for 16.7% (133/795). The peak of Chenopodiaceae pollen spread was in August. The prevalence of Chenopodiaceae pollen induced SAR was positively correlated with the concentration of Chenopodiaceae pollen (R2=0.78, P=0.043). The SPT positive rate of Chenopodiaceae pollen was 21.2% (1 282/6 043), and Xilinhot had the highest rate in six regions (28.0%, 236/842). Conclusions: The prevalence of Chenopodiaceae pollen induced SAR in Inner Mongolia grassland stays at a high level. Sneezing is the most obvious symptom of SAR. The peak of Chenopodiaceae pollen spread is in August and the prevalence of Chenopodiaceae pollen induced SAR is positively correlated with the pollen concentration.

ABSTRACT

Objective:To investigate the relationship of swallowing experience to frailty and nutrition in old stroke inpatients. Methods:From March to July, 2019, 174 stroke inpatients aged above 60 were investigated with Dysphagia Handicap Index (DHI), FRAIL Scale and Mini Nutritional Assessment Short Form (MNA-SF). The correlation of DHI score to scores of FRAIL Scale and MNA-SF was analyzed with Pearson correaltion analysis. Multiple regression was analyzed using the scores of dimensions and total score of DHI as dependent variables, and the scores of FRAIL Scale and MNA-SF as independent variables. Results:The inpatients aged (76.16±9.908) years. The DHI score was (50.34±28.325), in which the body score was (17.68±10.254), the function score was (20.31±11.085) and the emotion score was (12.36±9.193). The FRAIL Scale score was (3.16±1.301), and the MNA-SF score was (8.95±2.529). The DHI scores positively correlated with the FRAIL Scale score (r = 0.575, P < 0.001) and negatively correlated with the MNA-SF score (r = -0.544, P < 0.001). The scores of FRAIL Scale and MNA-SF explained the 34.4% of variable for body, 38.7% for function, 36.1% for emotion and 42.4% for DHI total score. Conclusion:Improving the frailty and nutrition may reduce the poor swallowing experience for old stroke inpatients.

ABSTRACT

Polyamide-amine (PAMAM) dendrimer, a new hyperbranched macromolecular polymer, is considered an "artificial protein" by many scholars on account of its excellent chemical and biological characteristics. PAMAM has internal cavities and a large number of reactive terminal groups. These structures allow the polymer to be used as a bionic macromoleculethat could simulate the biomimetic mineralization of the natural organic matrix on the surface of tooth tissue. Specifically, PAMAM can beused as an organic template to regulate mineral nucleation and crystal growth; thus, the polymerisa more ideal dental restoration material than traditional allogenic materials. This article reviews research progress on thePAMAM-induced biomimetic mineralization of hard tooth tissues.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE@#This study aimed to investigate the effect of occlusal thickness design on fracture resistance of endocrowns restored with lithium disilicate ceramic and zirconia.@*METHODS@#A total of 24 artificial first mandibular molars were randomly divided into four groups with six teeth in each group as follows: group lithium disilicate ceramic-2 mm (lithium disilicate ceramic, with an occlusal thickness of 2 mm and a retainer length of 4 mm); group lithium disilicate ceramic-4 mm (lithium disilicate ceramic, with an occlusal thickness of 4 mm and a retainer length of 2 mm); group zirconia-2 mm (zirconia, with an occlusal thickness of 2 mm and a retainer length of 4 mm); and group zirconia-4 mm (zirconia, with an occlusal thickness of 4 mm and a retainer length of 2 mm). After adhesive cementation (RelyX Ultimate Clicker), all specimens were subjected to thermocycling (10 000 cycles). The specimens were subjected to fracture resistance testing at a 135° angle to the teeth at a crosshead speed of 0.5 mm·min⁻¹ in a universal testing machine. Data were analyzed with ANOVA and Tukey's HSD test by SPSS 15.0. The failure modes were classified.@*RESULTS@#The fracture resistances of groups lithium disilicate ceramic-
2 mm, lithium disilicate ceramic-4 mm, zirconia-2 mm, and zirconia-4 mm were (890.54±83.41), (2 320.87±728.57),
(2 258.05±557.66), and (3 847.70±495.99) N respectively. Group zirconia-4 mm had the highest fracture resistance, whereas group lithium disilicate ceramic-2 mm had the lowest.@*CONCLUSIONS@#The fracture resistance of molar endocrown with zirconia is higher than that with lithium disilicate ceramic. Increasing the occlusal thickness can improve the fracture resistance but increase the risk of fracture of abutment.

ABSTRACT

Objective To investigate the overweight status of military officers and soldiers and to analyze the risks of the induction of chronic diseases. Methods Questionnaires and biochemical analysis were used to randomly survey the living and training status of 485 officers and soldiers in a military unit. Blood and urine samples were collected and analyzed using blood biochemical analysis methods and conventional dry chemical methods. Statistical analysis was performed through EXCEL 2007 and SPASS 12.0 software. Results The survey results showed that the proportion of BMI abnormal people in the officers and soldiers was high. Compared to the normal population, the officers and soldiers with abnormal BMI had more bad daily life habits such as smoking and drinking, while their diet balance was relatively poor, and their frequency of daily exercise was significantly less. Biochemical tests showed that the proportion of the officers and soldiers with hyperuricemia and hyperbilirubinemia was high, but there was no significant difference in the officers and soldiers with different BMI. Urine analysis showed that the number of urinary protein and occult blood in the officers and soldiers increased significantly after military training, and the BMI abnormal population was more significant than the normal population. Conclusion There was a relatively low correlation between different BMI and chronic metabolic diseases in military officers and soldiers, but those with abnormal BMI were at high risk for exercise-induced kidney injury. Military officers and soldiers should strengthen health management and actively control the acquired factors that cause BMI abnormalities, to effectively prevent and reduce the BMI abnormality and lower the risk of induced early chronic kidney injury disease, promoting the overall health level.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE@#To compare the clinical effects of total hip arthroplasty(THA) with non-osteotomy and subtrochanteric osteotomy in the treatment of Crowe type IV hip dysplasia (DDH) in adults.@*METHODS@#Data of 35 Crowe type IV DDH patients who underwent THA were analyzed retrospectively, the patients were divided into two groups:15 cases of non-osteotomy and 20 cases of subtrochanteric osteotomy. There was no significant difference in age, gender, body mass index between two groups (>0.05). The operative time, bleeding volume, hospitalization duration, Harris hip score and the limb length discrepancy (LLD) were evaluated.@*RESULTS@#All of the patients were followed up for 12 to 48 months, no prosthesis loosening or infection occurred by the end of follow-up. In non-osteotomy group, 1 case had occurred by sciatic nerve injury and 1 case developed cutaneous branch injury of the femoral nerve, both of which were spontaneously recovered completely without treatment after 3 months. One case of dislocation occurred in subtrochanteric osteotomy group, after closed reduction, dislocation did not recur; three cases had proximal femoral crack fractures and received steel plate fixation; no reoperation was needed. There was significant difference in operation duration, bleeding volume, and hospitalization days between two groups(0.05). The postoperative discrepancy of bilateral lower limbs had significant difference(<0.05).@*CONCLUSIONS@#THA with no femoral shortening osteotomy can achieve good clinical results in patients with unilateral Crowe IV developmental dysplasia of hip. Comparing with subtrochanteric osteotomy, the procedure of no femoral shortening osteotomy is easier technically. For unilateral high dislocation DDH patients with limb lengthening <=4 cm and good tissue conditions, THA without femoral osteotomy may be considered.

ABSTRACT

Immune checkpoint inhibitors are a promising strategy in the treatment of cancer, especially advanced types. However, not all patients are responsive to immune checkpoint inhibitors. The response rate depends on the immune microenvironment, tumor mutational burden (TMB), expression level of immune checkpoint proteins, and molecular subtypes of cancers. Along with the Cancer Genome Project, various open access databases, including The Cancer Genome Atlas and Gene Expression Omnibus, provide large volumes of data, which allow researchers to explore responsive or resistant biomarkers of immune checkpoint inhibitors. In this review, we introduced some methodologies on database selection, biomarker screening, current progress of immune checkpoint blockade in solid tumor treatment, possible mechanisms of drug resistance, strategies of overcoming resistance, and indications for immune checkpoint inhibitor therapy.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Some studies have found that zinc ions have pro-osteogenic activity, while zinc ions at high levels are also reported to inhibit the differentiation of osteoblasts instead of the pro-osteogenic activity. In some studies, zinc ions that are injected into the surface of titanium have ineffective antibacterial effects. Therefore, further investigations on zinc ion's effects as a controversial topic are required. OBJECTIVE: To observe the effects of zinc ion content on the pro-osteogenic and antibacterial activities of micro-arc oxidation coatings. METHODS: The coating was made on the surface of titanium by micro-arc oxidation method. The zinc ion content (atomic percentage) in the coating was set to 0.199%, 0.574%, and 1.995%, respectively, as low, medium and high dose groups. Untreated titanium plates were used as controls. MG63 cells were seeded on the surface of four groups of materials and tested for cell proliferation, morphological changes, and alkaline phosphatase activity.Staphylococcus aureus was inoculated on the surface of four groups of materials and the antibacterial rate was detected at 48 hours after inoculation. Bacterial adhesion was observed at 24 hours after inoculation. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION: Within 7 days of culture, the number of MG63 cells on the material surface gradually increased with time. The proliferative ability of cells was highest in the low-dose group, followed by the middle-dose and control group, and it was lowest in the high-dose group. After 48 hours of culture, the cells in the control, low-dose and middle-dose groups showed normal morphology and expanded pseudopodia, and some pseudopodia penetrated into the cell surface, while normal or intact cells were undetected in the high-dose group. Within 13 days of culture, the activity of alkaline phosphatase was the highest in the low-dose group, followed by the middle-dose and control groups, and the lowest in the high-dose group. There were significant differences in the activity of alkaline phoshatase between groups (P < 0.05). The antibacterial rate of the materials was 62.54% in the low-dose group, 69.84% in the middle-dose group, and 79.19% in the high-dose group, respectively. Findings from this study reveal that with the increase of zinc ion contents, the pro-osteogenic activity of micro-arc oxidation coatings decreased, while the antibacterial property improved.

ABSTRACT

<p><b>Background</b>Asthma is a common chronic respiratory disease and is related to air pollution exposure. However, only a few studies have concentrated on the association between air pollution and adult asthma. Moreover, the results of these studies are controversial. Therefore, the present study aimed to analyze the influence of various pollutants on hospitalization due to asthma in adults.</p><p><b>Methods</b>A total of 1019 unrelated hospitalized adult asthma patients from Northeast China were recruited from 2014 to 2016. Daily average concentrations of air pollutants (particulate matter <2.5 μm [PM], particulate matter <10 μm [PM], sulfur dioxide [SO], nitrogen dioxide [NO], and carbon monoxide [CO]) were obtained from the China National Environmental Monitoring Centre website from 2014 to 2016. Cox logistic regression analysis was used to analyze the relationship between air pollutants and hospital admissions in adult asthma.</p><p><b>Results</b>The maximum odds ratio (OR) value for most air pollutants occurred on lag day 1. Lag day 1 was chosen as the exposure period, and 8 days before onset was chosen as the control period. Three pollutants (PM, CO, and SO) were entered into the regression equation, and the corresponding OR (95% confidence interval) was 0.995 (0.991-0.999), 3.107 (1.607-6.010), and 0.979 (0.968-0.990), respectively.</p><p><b>Conclusions</b>A positive association between hospital admissions and the daily average concentration of CO was observed. CO is likely to be a risk factor for hospital admissions in adults with asthma.</p>

ABSTRACT

Objective:To observe the effect of warm joint needling plus rehabilitation techniques on the balance function and quality of life (QOL) of patients with spastic hemiplegia after ischemic cerebral stroke. Methods:Ninety patients with spastic hemiplegia after ischemic cerebral stroke were randomized into a rehabilitation group,a warm joint needling group and an observation group, with 30 cases in each group. The rehabilitation group was intervened by Bobath therapy, the warm joint needling group was treated with joint needling on the affected side plus warm needling, and the observation group was given the same rehabilitation treatment as the rehabilitation group together with the same warm joint needling as the warm joint needling group. The three groups were treated once another day,1 month as a treatment course for 6 months. Before the treatment, and respectively after 2-week,1-month,3-month,and 6-month treatment, the modified Ashworth scale (MAS) was used to measure the anti-spasm ability of the lower limb, the Berg balance scale (BBS) was adopted to evaluate the balance function, and the stroke-specific quality of life scale (SS-QOL)was employed to estimate the QOL.Results:After 3-month and 6-month treatment, the lower-limb MAS scores in the observation group were significantly better than those in the rehabilitation group and the warm joint needling group (all P<0.05).After 1-month,3-month and 6-month treatment, the BBS scores in the observation group were significantly better than those in the rehabilitation group and the warm joint needling group (all P<0.05).After 2-week,1-month,3-month and 6-month treatment, the SS-QOL scores in the observation group were markedly better than those in the rehabilitation group and the warm joint needling group (all P<0.05).Conclusion:Warm joint needling plus rehabilitation can effectively improve the lower-limb spasticity state, balance function and QOL in patients with spastic hemiplegia after ischemic cerebral stroke.
