ABSTRACT

Objective To investigate the effects of different gargling methods of sodium bicarbonate on oral pH values in children with malignant tumors undergoing chemotherapy, and to provide references for preventing oral fungal infection. Methods Totally 36 children with malignant tumors were recruited as research objects. Gargling methods were designed based on different sodium bicarbonate concentration, rinsing time, rinsing volume, and rinsing bites. Oral pH value was tested by pH indicator strips before and after rinsing. Results Sodium bicarbon-ate solution concentration, rinsing volume, ringing time and rinsing bites all influenced the changes of oral pH val-ue after rinsing. Regardless of methods, oral pH value was restored to the level of pre-rinse after 90 minutes. There were no significant differences in degree of comfort and compliance among different methods. Conclusion For children with malignant tumors undergoing chemotherapy, 5% 15ml sodium bicarbonate gargle is recommended to be rinsed for 30 seconds with 3 mouthfuls, and the interval is recommended to be no more than 90 minutes.
