ABSTRACT
Radiation-induced cognitive dysfunction (RICD) has an insidious onset and there is a lack of effective prevention and treatment measures. The efficacy of memantine hydrochloride as a classical treatment drug is limited, and it is inevitable to seek multi-target combination drugs. In recent years, the protective effect of vitamin E and vitamin D on cognitive function has been widely recognized. Several basic studies have shown that vitamin E can play a role in the combination of medication by protecting neurons and reducing the adverse effects caused by memantine hydrochloride; Vitamin D and memantine hydrochloride have also become a hot topic of research due to their significant synergistic effects. The combination of memantine hydrochloride and vitamin therapy is expected to bring additional benefits to RICD patients.
ABSTRACT
Danggui Buxuetang, derived from Clarifying Doubts about Damage from Internal and External Causes (Volume 2): Treatise on Heat Injury to Stomach Qi(《内外伤辨惑论卷中·暑伤胃气论》) by LI Dongyuan in the Jin and Yuan dynasties, is a classic and famous formula for tonifying qi and generating blood that has been inherited and promoted by successive generations of medical practitioners and has been included in the "Catalogue of Ancient Classical Prescriptions (First Batch)" published by the National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine in 2018. The paper analyzed the historical origin, composition, dosage, processing, preparation, decocting, and taking methods, efficacy, and application of the classic formula Danggui Buxuetang by consulting ancient and modern literature and combining the key information examination principles of ancient classic prescriptions. A total of 604 pieces of information on relevant ancient literature were collected, including 186 ancient Chinese medical books, of which 40 (five in the Jin and Yuan dynasties, 19 in the Ming Dynasty, and 16 in the Qing Dynasty) had detailed records of composition, processing, and dosage. Danggui Buxuetang is mainly comprised of Astragali Radix and Angelicae Sinensis Radix. According to the ancient and modern dose conversion, there are 37.3-38.1 g of Astragali Radix and 7.5-7.6 g of Angelicae Sinensis Radix in the formula. Astragali Radix is preferably fried with honey and Angelicae Sinensis Radix with wine. Astragali Radix and Angelicae Sinensis Radix are decocted with 600 mL of water to 300 mL, and taken warm before meals. The main effect of this formula are described in ancient books as blood deficiency and fever, with symptoms of muscle fever, dryness and heat, irritability and thirst, red eyes and face, sleeplessness in daytime and night, and surging and feeble pulse which is weak under hard pressing, and it is a famous formula for replenishing qi and generating blood. Modern research shows that Danggui Buxuetang is commonly used in the treatment of various kinds of anemia, diabetic nephropathy, tumors, and cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases. The above research results can provide a reference for the subsequent development and research on the classic formula Danggui Buxuetang.
ABSTRACT
There is a certain relationship between chemotherapy and stroke in cancer patients. Its mechanism may be associated with the increase of the prevalence of traditional vascular factors, the promotion of coagulation dysfunction, the induction of anemia, the impairment of cardiac function, and vascular inflammation. The pathophysiological mechanism of chemotherapy-associated stroke is still in the exploratory stage. This article reviews the pathophysiological mechanism, monitoring indicators, and diagnosis and treatment progress of stroke in cancer patients during chemotherapy.
ABSTRACT

This article mainly describes the relationship between cancer and ischemic stroke from the aspects of epidemiology, pathophysiological mechanism, clinical and imaging manifestations, treatment, and prognosis.
ABSTRACT
Objective@#To explore the application of asymmetrical sculpture in the ear reconstruction with autologous cartilage through comparing the difference of the balanced sculpture and asymmetrical sculpture.@*Methods@#We used the method of retrospective survey and classified the patients who had undergone ear reconstruction because of microtia into two groups. Group A included the patients who had undergone operation with the application of balanced sculpture method. Group B included the patients who had undergone operation with the application of unsymmetrical sculpture method. We picked out 35 patients containing 19 patients of group A and 16 patients of group B according to our grouping criteria and exclusion criteria. The number of cases with complications was recorded, such as collapse of framework, exposure of cartilage, necrosis of skin flap and reconstructed ear infection. The clinical outcomes of two methods in refining the delicate structures of the reconstructed ear were evaluated (that is the definition, shape, size, color and projection). The time for sculpture was compared. Then we analysed the results and evaluated the effectiveness, safety and feasibility of asymmetrical sculpture′s application in the ear reconstruction.@*Results@#Group A had 2 cases which suffered skin flap necrosis. One of them had cartilage exposure and then had secondary infection leading to local cartilage necrosis and absorption, but after active treatment and local skin flap transplantation it was cured. Group B had no skin flap necrosis, cartilage extrusion, framework deformation and distortion, framework collapse and necrosis or absorption. Group B had a higher score in definition, shape, size, color and projection, and the difference was significant in definition, shape, color and projection. In our clinical practice, the sculpture time in both group was similarly about 40 minutes after the surgery operator had skillfully mastered both techniques.@*Conclusions@#Both methods are safe and feasible. The method of asymmetrical sculpture does not require additional operative time, and the method of asymmetrical sculpture is a better one compared with the method of balanced sculpture in refining the reconstructed ear.
ABSTRACT
Perioperative stroke refers to acute ischemic or hemorrhagic stroke that occurs before operation, during operation and within 30 days after operation.Although the levels of anesthesia and surgical treatment have improved in recent years, there is no significant decrease in the incidence of perioperative stroke. The traditional vascular risk factors, such as advanced age, hypertension, and diabetes, are also the risk factors for stroke onset. In addition, perioperative stroke is closely associated with the operation site, operation mode, anesthesia, and other perioperative events. The treatment and prevention of perioperative stroke is attracting more and more attention, including surgery, anesthesia, neurology and other clinicians. This article reviews the risk assessment, prevention, and treatment of perioperative stroke.

In order to reveal the treatment mechanism of Chinese medicine with the effect of activating blood and resolving putridity, we selected acetyl-11-keto-beta-boswellic acid (AKBA) and arsenic trioxide (ATO), the main monomeric components of frankincense and arsenolite which are two most commonly used Chinese medicine with effect of activating blood and resolving putridity. We combined AKBA and ATO as a compound, and explored its regulatory role in productions and activities of matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-1, MMP-2 and MMP-9 in human skin fibroblasts (HSFbs) and human acute monocytic leukemia cell line THP-1 in inflammatory state.
ABSTRACT
AIM: To evaluate the effects of acetyl-11-keto-beta-boswellic acid (AKBA, a main active component from frankincense, one of the traditional Chinese herb for healing wounds) on the activities of matrix metalloproteinase(MMP)-1, MMP-2 and MMP-9.METHODS: Pure human interstitial collagenase (MMP-1) or gelatinase A (MMP-2) was activated by p-aminophenylmercuric acetate (APMA), and was incubated with AKBA for 1 h. The activities of the enzymes were observed by quenched fluorescent substrate. The lysates of rat polymorphonuclear neutrophils [PMNs, rich in gelatinase B (MMP-9)] was incubated with AKBA for 1 h, and activity of MMP-9 was tested by gelatin zymography. Three cell models: activated human dermal fibroblasts by TNF-α, activated THP-1 cells by PMA and fibroblasts-THP-1 co-culture system were established. AKBA was cultured with these cell models for 24 h. The levels of MMP-1, MMP-2 and MMP-9 in the cell culture supernatants were tested by ELISA and activities of MMP-2 and MMP-9 were tested by gelatin zymography assays.RESULTS: AKBA dose-dependently inhibited the activities of human MMP-1 and MMP-2 at the range of 0.1-0.8 mmol/L, with 50% inhibitory concentration (IC50) of 0.18 mmol /L and 0.27 mmol/L, respectively. In the range of 0.05-0.85 mmol/L, AKBA inhibited the MMP-9 activity (P<0.01). Although AKBA promoted fibroblasts to secrete MMP-2, the production of MMP-9 by THP-1 was inhibited. In the cell co-culture system, the inhibitory effects on MMP-1, MMP-2 and MMP-9 productions were also observed.CONCLUSION: AKBA, as a bioactive component of frankincense, has an inhibitory effect on MMPs production and activities, indicating the possible mechanism for healing chronic wounds by frankincense.
ABSTRACT
Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) are a family of zinc-dependent endopeptidases, which as a group can degrade essentially all extracellular matrix components. The proteolytic property of the MMPs is important during wound healing to remove debris and facilitate cell migration. Targeting towards the decreased MMPs activities is a new treatment strategy for healing chronic wounds. Salvia miltiorrhiza is a popular Chinese herb that could promote chronic ulcers healing for topical use. Salvianolic acid B (Sal B) is the most abundant bioactive component in Salvia miltiorrhiza. The research was designed to explore the inhibitory effects of Sal B on MMP-1, MMP-2 and MMP-9 activities.
ABSTRACT
Objective To study the mechanisms of nerve cell apoptosis after traumatic brain injury and the influences of CTP on rats after brain trauma. Methods The model of severe closed traumatic brain injury (TBI) was used. A total of 300 Wistar rats were divided randomly into TBI group, CTP treatment group, and sham operation group. The Fas protein expression and neural apoptosis in each group were observed at 3, 6, 12, 24, 48, 72, 168, and 336 h after TBI. At the same time, the rest 12 rats were employed as the normal controls. Immunohistochemistry and TUNEL staining were used to observe the neural apoptosis and the expression of Fas protein in hippocampus of rats after TBI. Results Increased expression of Fas protein and neural apoptosis were found in the rat hippocampus after TBI. Conclusion The increased expression of Fas protein may result in neural apoptosis after TBI. CTP can reduce the expression of Fas protein and neural apoptosis.
