ABSTRACT

Objective : To study the effect of temperature and light intensity on photosynthetic fluorescence parameters, volatile oil content, and growth of Atractylodes lancea and provide reference for the rational selection of cultivation environment for A. lancea. MethodWe determined the photosynthetic indexes (such as net photosynthetic rate, water use efficiency, and carboxylation rate), light response curve, CO2 response curve, fluorescence parameters, and the content of four volatile oils in A. lancea under two temperature treatments (32 °C and 22 °C) and two light treatments (full light and shade). ResultThe net photosynthetic rate and water use efficiency of A. lancea under high temperature + strong light were significantly higher than those under high temperature + weak light and low temperature + strong light. The ability of A. lancea to use weak light at low temperature was the strongest, while the utilization rate of weak light under strong light significantly reduced. The photosynthetic rate of A. lancea at low temperature was more susceptible to light intensity and CO2 concentration than that at high temperature. The maximum photosynthetic rate and apparent quantum efficiency under weak light were significantly higher than those under strong light. The photoreaction efficiency at high temperature was higher than that at low temperature. The total amount of volatile oil in A. lancea treated with high temperature + weak light was the highest, reaching 4.582%. Compared with high temperature + strong light, high temperature + weak light significantly increased the content of hinesol and β-eudesmol in A. lancea by 91.7% and 35.7%, respectively, and low temperature + strong light significantly increased the content of hinesol by 87.5%. The content of β-eudesmol in low temperature + weak light treatment was significantly lower than that in high temperature + weak light treatment. ConclusionTThe growth of A. lancea was affected by the interaction between temperature and light. The light and temperature conditions required for the accumulation of volatile oil were not consistent with those suitable for the growth and development of A. lancea. A. lancea responded to the changes of light and temperature conditions by regulating the synthesis and accumulation of volatile oil.

ABSTRACT

Traditional Chinese medicine has unique advantages in the treatment of degenerative bone and joint diseases, and its widely used in clinical practice. In recent years, many scholars have conducted a large number of basic studies on the delay of intervertebral disc degeneration by herbal compound and monomeric components from different perspectives. In order to further elucidate its mechanism of action, this paper summarizes the in vivo and in vitro experimental studies conducted at the level of both herbal compound and single components, respectively, in order to provide references for the basic research on the treatment of lumbar intervertebral disc degeneration by Chinese medicine. A summary shows that commonly used herbal compound prescriptions include both classical prescriptions such as Duhuo Jisheng Decoction, as well as clinical experience prescriptions such as Yiqi Huoxue Recipe. Angelicae Sinensis Radix, Chuanxiong Rhizoma, Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata, Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix, and Eucommiae Cortex were used most frequently. Tonic for deficiency and blood stasis activators were used most frequently. The most utilized monomeric components include icariin, ginsenoside Re, salvianolic acid B and aucubin. The main molecular mechanisms by which herbal compound and monomeric components delay of lumbar intervertebral disc degeneration include improving the intervertebral disc microenvironment, promoting the synthesis of aggregated proteoglycans and type Ⅱ collagen in the intervertebral disc, reducing the degradation of the extracellular matrix, and inhibiting apoptosis in the nucleus pulposus cells, etc. The main signaling pathways involved include Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway, MAPK-related signaling pathway, mTOR signaling pathway, Fas/FasL signaling pathway, PI3 K/Akt signaling pathway, NF-κB signaling pathway, JAK/STAT signaling pathway, and hedgehog signaling pathway, etc.

ABSTRACT

Circular RNAs (circRNAs) are a type of endogenous non-coding RNAs discovered recently, which are produced by models such as circularization driven by intron pairing and are regulated by related regulatory factors. An important biological function of circRNAs is to act as a molecular sponge to make the level of microRNAs significantly change in a short period of time. A number of studies have shown that circRNAs are closely associated with ischemic stroke. Therefore, a better understanding of the function of circRNAs and its regulatory mechanism will help to explore the expression of circRNAs in early ischemic stroke and its molecular mechanism in the occurrence and development of ischemic stroke, so as to establish an early warning model to realize the early detection, early diagnosis and early treatment of ischemic stroke. This article reviews the definition, biological characteristics, and expression changes and roles of circRNAs after ischemic stroke.

ABSTRACT

Weeds is one of the important parts of agricultural ecosystem of Chinese materia medica. Weeds is a double-edged sword with advantages and disadvantages for the cultivated medicinal plants. In this study, we firstly analyzed the positive and negative effects of weeds on the yield and quality of Chinese materia medica. We then explored the possible mechanisms for the weeds' positive effects from the aspects of interspecific relationship, soil microecological environment, light environment, natural control of pests and so on. We also summarized three basic principles of weed control, that is, "making medicinal plants and weeds coexist harmoniously, achieving the overall optimum growth of medicinal plants", "prevention first, integrated control" and "preserving beneficial weeds and increasing their beneficial effects, removing harmful weeds and control their adverse effects". Finally, we introduced several common weed ecological control technology in field of the cultivated medicinal plants in China, including technology of controlling weeds by no-tillage, stral mulch, rotation, alternative herbs, competitive crops, and allelopathy. This study is aimed to apply the ecology theory to guide weed management and control, so as to achieve the goal of advantages promotion and disadvantages elimination of weeds to cultivated medicinal plants, making weeds into treasure and to promote the sustainable and healthy development of Chinese medicinal materials production and the protection of weed diversity.

ABSTRACT

Ecological agriculture is a crucial way for agriculture of Chinese materia medica, which emphasizes the application of ecological principles in the cultivation of traditional Chinese medicine. While long-term intensive farming and modern chemical agriculture have threatened soil health, the sustainable development of ecological agriculture of Chinese materia medica is constrained. No-til-lage can reduce both frequency and intensity of tillage. Compared with conventional agriculture, no-tillage can reduce soil disturbance, maintain no-tillage for a long or permanent period and keep mulching. The application of no-tillage has a long history. More and more studies have shown that no-tillage has many advantages over conventional tillage, and the ecological and economic benefits of no-tillage are particularly outstandingin long-term. The cultivation of Chinese medicinal materials adheres to the principle of not grabbing land from farmland, making full use of the soil resources under forests, mountains and wasteland. Reducing the risk of soil loss and sustai-nable utilization are the core issues in the process of new land cultivation. No-tillage application, which not only inherits the traditional Chinese concept of natural farming, but also integrates the laws of ecological agriculture, will become the core strategies of sustainable development of Chinese materia medica ecological agriculture. This study will introduce the basic concepts and development process of no-tillage, analyze their ecological benefits in ecological agriculture of Chinese materia medica, and put forward their application strategies.

ABSTRACT

Due to its advantages of low wear, high stability and flexibility, the new generation metal-on-metal hip prosthesis is favored by many patients with hip diseases, especially young patients. However,in recent years, several studies have indicated that adverse reactions to metal debris (ARMD) caused the formation of inflammatory pseudotumor, which ultimately led to a higher revision rate after metal-on-metal hip arthroplasty. This aroused the widespread concern from doctors and patients. Moreover, revision surgery for metal-on-metal hip arthroplasty in the setting of inflammatory pseudotumor is faced with a great risk of failure because of the large defects of bone and surrounding soft tissue and difficulty in removing the original prosthesis and the fixing of the modified prosthesis. Therefore, the use of such products is restricted with caution in their choice. We summarized the recent developments in the research in the risk factors, diagnosis and treatment of inflammatory pseudotumor after metal-on-metal hip arthroplasty. The risk factors for the formation of inflammatory pseudotumor around the hip prosthesis mainly include the increase of metal ion concentration, the position of prosthesis implantation and the patient's own factors. The diagnosis mainly depends on physical examination, imaging examination, laboratory examination, arthroscopy and histological examination. The treatment strategies for clinical symptomatic and asymptomatic patients are also varies.Through the detailed analysis, evaluation and summary of the above contents,we may provide guidance for the selection of hip prosthesis, and lay the foundation for further exploration of the mechanism of inflammatory pseudotumor caused by ARMD.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Anterior cruciate ligament injury, with an increasing incidence in recent years, will seriously impact the motor function of the knee joint. Rehabilitation exercise after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction is directly related to whether the patient can obtain ideal joint function. It is of important clinical significance to introduce the concept of enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) into the perioperative management of arthroscopic anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction. OBJECTIVE: To explore the clinical effect of ERAS in the perioperative period of anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction. METHODS: Sixty patients with anterior cruciate ligament injury, who were treated in the Department of Orthopedics, Renmin Hospital of Wuhan University from July 2016 to July 2018, were randomly divided into ERAS group (n=30) and traditional treatment group (n=30). Postoperative Visual Analogue Scale score, recovery time of knee range of motion, Lysholm knee scoring scale score, hospitalization duration, patients’ satisfaction rating were compared between the two groups. The implementation of the study complied with the Declaration of Helsinki and the relevant ethical requirements of Wuhan University Renmin Hospital, and all the enrolled patients were fully informed of the trial process. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION: The Visual Analogue Scale scores in the ERAS group were significantly lower than those in the traditional treatment group at 1, 24 hours, 2, 3, and 7 days after surgery (P < 0.05). The time that the range of motion returned to 30°, 60°, 90° and 120° after surgery in the ERAS group was significantly less than that in the traditional treatment group (P < 0.05). The Lysholm knee scoring scale scores in 3 months and 6 months after surgery in the ERAS group were significantly higher than those in the traditional treatment group (P < 0.05). The length of hospitalization in the ERAS group was significantly lower than that in the traditional treatment group (P < 0.05). The patients’ satisfaction rating in the ERAS group was significantly higher than that in the traditional treatment group (P < 0.05). To conclude, the introduction of ERAS concept into the perioperative management of anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction has obvious merits in reducing anxiety, relieving postoperative pain, reducing postoperative complications, promoting early recovery of patients and accelerating the recovery of knee joint function.

ABSTRACT

Ubiquitin specific peptidase 28 (USP28) is closely associated to the occurrence and development of various malignancies, and thus has been validated as a promising therapeutic target for cancer therapy. To date, only few USP28 inhibitors with moderate inhibitory activity have been reported, highly potent and selective USP28 inhibitors with new chemotypes remain to be discovered for pathologically investigating the roles of deubiquitinase. In this current study, we reported the synthesis and biological evaluation of new [1,2,3]triazolo[4,5-]pyrimidine derivatives as potent USP28 inhibitors. Especially, compound potently inhibited USP28 (IC = 1.10 ± 0.02 μmol/L,  = 40 nmol/L), showing selectivity over USP7 and LSD1 (IC > 100 μmol/L). Compound was cellularly engaged to USP28 in gastric cancer cells. Compound reversibly bound to USP28 and directly affected its protein levels, thus inhibiting the proliferation, cell cycle at S phase, and epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) progression in gastric cancer cell lines. Docking studies were performed to rationalize the potency of compound . Collectively, compound could serve as a new tool compound for the development of new USP28 inhibitors for exploring the roles of deubiquitinase in cancers.

ABSTRACT

Intercropping farming system is one of the essence of traditional agriculture in China and one of the most common and basic patterns of modern ecological planting. Intercropping system uses the principle of species diversity to create reasonable interspecific interaction conditions with obvious productivity advantages. In this paper, the interspecies interaction is divided into aboveground and underground parts from the space view, and its influence and mechanism on the yield and secondary metabolites of medicinal plants are elaborated. The interspecific interaction in the aboveground part mainly introduces the distribution and utilization of space resources among plants. The interspecific interaction in the underground part mainly introduces the soil rhizosphere effect and related mediating factors, root exudates, soil microorganisms, root space structure and soil environmental factors. On the basis of understanding the mechanism of interspecific interaction, this paper further discusses the application of intercropping in traditional Chinese medicine ecological agriculture, taking the effective control of diseases and insect pests, the increase of medicinal material yield and the improvement of medicinal material quality as the benefit index, so as to seek better advantages of intercropping and provide ideas for the utilization of intercropping production mode in traditional Chinese medicine ecological agriculture.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND@#The influence of surgical delay on mortality and morbidity has been studied extensively among elderly hip fracture patients. However, most studies only focus on the timing of surgery when patients have already been hospitalized, without considering pre-admission waiting time. Therefore, the present study aims to explore the influence of admission delay on surgical outcomes.@*METHODS@#In this retrospective study, we recorded admission timing and interval from admission to surgery for included patient. Other covariates were also collected to control confounding. The primary outcome was 1-year mortality. The secondary outcomes were 1-month mortality, 3-month mortality, ICU admission and postoperative pneumonia. We mainly used multivariate logistic regression to determine the effect of admission timing on postoperative outcomes. An additional survival analysis was also performed to assess the impact of admission delay on survival status in the first year after operation.@*RESULTS@#The proportion of patients hospitalized on day 0, day 1, day 2 after injury was 25.4%, 54.7% and 66.3%, respectively. And 12.6% patients visited hospital one week later after injury. Mean time from admission to surgery was 5.2 days (standard deviation 2.8 days). Hospitalization at one week after injury was a risk factor for 1-year mortality (OR 1.762, 95% CI 1.026–3.379, P=0.041).@*CONCLUSION@#Admission delay of more than one week is significantly associated with higher 1-year mortality. As a supplement to the current guidelines which emphasizes early surgery after admission, we also advocate early admission once patients get injured.

ABSTRACT

Rhizosphere bacteria play a vital role in plant nutrition absorption, growth and disease resistance. In this study,high-throughput sequencing technology was used to analyze the rhizosphere bacterial communities of Salvia miltiorrhiza and S. miltiorrhiza f. alba. Moreover, the function of dominant rhizosphere bacterial communities was analyzed. We found that Sphingobacteriales,Sphingomonadales and Nitrosomonadaceae were both dominant and specific bacteria in the rhizosphere of S. miltiorrhiza. The main functions of dominant rhizosphere bacteria communities in both species include promoting transformation of soil nutrients, improving plant immunity and ability of stress tolerance. This study was the first to compare rhizobacterial communities structure and function of S. miltiorrhiza and S. miltiorrhiza f. alba, which provided a new theoretical reference for studing the rhizosphere mechanism of healthy S. miltiorrhiza planting in the future.
