ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND:With the rapid development of minimally invasive spinal surgery and enhanced recovery after surgery, endoscopic intervertebral fusion techniques have gradually emerged and been widely used in clinical practice in recent years. OBJECTIVE:To analyze the early clinical efficacy of uniaxial spinal endoscopic intervertebral fusion combined with posterior percutaneous pedicle screw fixation in the treatment of lumbar degenerative diseases. METHODS:135 patients with lumbar degenerative diseases treated by uniaxial spinal endoscopic intervertebral fusion combined with posterior percutaneous pedicle screw fixation in the Suining Central Hospital from October 2020 to December 2021 were enrolled in this study. There were 59 males and 76 females, aged 47-79 years. The lower limb and lumbar pain was evaluated by visual analog scale and lumbar function was assessed by Oswestry disability index before the operation,1 week,1,and 6 months after the operation, and at the end of follow-up.The overall pain recovery of patients was evaluated by the scoring criteria for low back pain surgery of Spine Group of Chinese Orthopedic Association and the lumbar physiological curvature and intervertebral fusion were evaluated on lumbar lateral X-ray preoperatively and at the end of follow-up. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION:(1)The 135 patients were followed up for(17.8±3.0)months after surgery. There was 1 case of endplate injury,1 case of cerebrospinal fluid leakage,1 case of nerve root injury,1 case of intervertebral cage subsidence and displacement,1 case of chronic infection, and 1 case of pedicle screw rupture. The complication rate was 5.2%.(2)The lumbar visual analog scale score and Oswestry disability index significantly decreased in the waist and lower limbs at various time points postoperatively compared with those preoperatively in 135 patients(P<0.05).The scoring criteria for low back pain surgery of the Spine Group of the Chinese Orthopedic Association were significantly better at the last follow-up than that preoperatively in 135 patients(P<0.05).(3)At the last follow-up,there was no significant difference in physiological curvature of lumbar vertebra as compared with that preoperatively in 135 patients(P>0.05),with a fusion rate of 95.8%.(4)It is concluded that uniaxial spinal endoscopic intervertebral fusion combined with posterior percutaneous pedicle screw fixation in the treatment of lumbar degenerative diseases has shown satisfactory early clinical results and is a highly safe minimally invasive spinal surgery mode.

ABSTRACT

Objective:To investigate the clinical efficacy of arthroscopic double-row double-pulley technique in the treatment of Ideberg type IA scapular glenoid fracture. Methods:A retrospective case series study was conducted to analyze the clinical data of 16 patients with Ideberg type IA scapular glenoid fracture admitted to Jiading Branch of Shanghai General Hospital from January 2018 to December 2021, including 10 males and 6 females, aged 25-65 years [(42.9±5.1)years]. The patients were treated with arthroscope-assisted reduction and double-row double-pulley technique. The operation time was recorded. Three-dimensional reconstruction of the shoulder joint with CT was performed to assess fracture displacement and healing. Modified University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) score and Constant-Murley score were used to evaluate shoulder function and Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) score was used to evaluate pain before surgery, at 3, 6, 12 months after surgery and at the last follow-up. The complications were observed. Results:All the patients were followed up for 12-36 months [(20.3±4.4)months]. The operation time was 60-90 minutes [(74.7±8.9)minutes]. Three-dimensional construction of the shoulder joint with CT performed at 3 months after surgery showed that there was no fracture re-displacement and all the patients had bone union. The modified UCLA score, Constant-Murley score and VAS score at 3 months after surgery were (30.4±0.4)points, (84.3±1.4)points and 2.0(1.3, 3.0)points, respectively, which were significantly improved compared with those before surgery [(21.1±0.5)points, (56.4±1.3)points and 5.0(5.0, 6.0)points respectively] ( P<0.05). The modified UCLA score, Constant-Murley score and VAS score at 6 months after surgery were (33.1±0.4)points, (91.0±0.5)points and 1.0(1.0, 2.0)]points respectively, which were significantly improved compared with those at 3 months after surgery ( P<0.05). The modified UCLA score, Constant-Murley score and VAS score at 12 months after surgery were (33.5±0.3)points, (92.6±0.6)points and 1.0(0.3, 1.8)points respectively, showing no significant differences from those at 6 months after surgery ( P>0.05). The modified UCLA score, Constant-Murley score and VAS score at the last follow-up were (33.8±0.8)points, (93.7±1.8)points and 1.0(0.0, 1.0)points respectively, with no significant differences from those at 12 months after surgery ( P>0.05). There were no complications such as wound infection, neurovascular injury or shoulder stiffness after surgery. Conclusion:Arthroscopic double-row double-pulley technique for the treatment of Ideberg type IA scapular glenoid fracture has a short operation time, a high fracture healing rate, good shoulder function recovery, and pain relief, with no common complications.

ABSTRACT

Genome-guided oncology refers to a new treatment concept that transcends histological classification and pathological ty-ping and uses drugs according to the genetic characteristics of tumors. New drug development technology and clinical trial design based on this concept provide new ideas for the clinical application of precision oncology. The multi-component and multi-target characteristics of Chinese medicine provide rich resources for the development of tumor-targeting drugs from natural products, and the design of the master protocol trial aiming at the characteristics of precision oncology supports the rapid clinical screening of effective tumor-targeting drugs. The emergence of the synthetic lethality strategy breaks through the bottleneck that the drug can only target the oncogene but cannot do anything to the tumor suppressor gene with the loss-of-function mutation in the past. With the rapid development of high-throughput sequencing technology, the cost of sequencing is also decreasing. For the development of tumor-targeting drugs, how to keep up with the update speed of target information is a difficult problem of concern. Based on the integration of innovative ideas and me-thods of precision oncology, network pharmacology, and synthetic lethality strategy on synthetic lethal interaction network of antitumor Chinese medicine compatibility formula design, and the combination of improvement of innovative clinical trial methods, such as master protocol trial, basket trial, and umbrella trial, unique advantages of Chinese medicine are expected to be exerted beyond the antibody-based drugs and small molecule-based drugs and corresponding targeted drugs are potentially developed for clinical application.

ABSTRACT

Diosgenin, a steroidal sapogenin, obtained from Trigonella foenum-graecum, Dioscorea, and Rhizoma polgonati, has shown high potential and interest in the treatment of various cancers such as oral squamous cell carcinoma, laryngeal cancer, esophageal cancer, liver cancer, gastric cancer, lung cancer, cervical cancer, prostate cancer, glioma, and leukemia. This article aims to provide an overview of the in vivo, in vitro, and clinical studies reporting the diosgenin's anticancer effects. Preclinical studies have shown promising effects of diosgenin on inhibiting tumor cell proliferation and growth, promoting apoptosis, inducing differentiation and autophagy, inhibiting tumor cell metastasis and invasion, blocking cell cycle, regulating immunity and improving gut microbiome. Clinical investigations have revealed clinical dosage and safety property of diosgenin. Furthermore, in order to improve the biological activity and bioavailability of diosgenin, this review focuses on the development of diosgenin nano drug carriers, combined drugs and the diosgenin derivatives. However, further designed trials are needed to unravel the diosgenin's deficiencies in clinical application.

ABSTRACT

Drastic surges in intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) induce cell apoptosis, while most chemotherapy drugs lead to the accumulation of ROS. Here, we constructed an organic compound, arsenical N-‍(4-(1,3,2-dithiarsinan-2-yl)phenyl)acrylamide (AAZ2), which could prompt the ROS to trigger mitochondrial-dependent apoptosis in gastric cancer (GC). Mechanistically, by targeting pyruvate dehydrogenase kinase 1 (PDK1), AAZ2 caused metabolism alteration and the imbalance of redox homeostasis, followed by the inhibition of phosphoinositide-3-kinase (PI3K)/protein kinase B (AKT)/mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) pathway and leading to the activation of B-cell lymphoma 2 (Bcl2)/Bcl2-associated X (Bax)/caspase-9 (Cas9)/Cas3 cascades. Importantly, our in vivo data demonstrated that AAZ2 could inhibit the growth of GC xenograft. Overall, our data suggested that AAZ2 could contribute to metabolic abnormalities, leading to mitochondrial-dependent apoptosis by targeting PDK1 in GC.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To investigate the expression differences of LLGL2 between prostatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDA) and prostatic acinar adenocarcinoma, and its potential clinical significance. Methods: Eighteen patients diagnosed of PDA or prostatic acinar adenocarcinoma with PDA component by histopathology during January 2015 and December 2019 in the Beijing Hospital, China were retrospectively studied. The transcriptome analysis was conducted using the tissue of PDA and prostatic acinar adenocarcinoma. Differentially expressed genes and the differences in expression profiles were identified. Further, differentially expressed proteins were verified by immunohistochemistry. Results: The tissue from 8 of the 18 patients were used for transcriptome analysis, the results of which were compared with data from public databases. 129 differentially expressed genes were identified. 45 of them were upregulated while 84 were downregulated. The results of gene enrichment analysis and gene oncology (GO) analysis revealed that the differentially expressed genes were mostly enriched in the hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and interleukin-17 related pathways. GPAT2, LLGL2, MAMDC4, PCSK9 and SMIM6 were differentially expressed between PDA and prostatic acinar adenocarcinoma. Moreover, LLGL2 was more likely expressed in the cytoplasm (P=0.04) than the nucleus (P<0.01) in PDA, compared with prostatic acinar adenocarcinoma. Conclusions: The gene expression profiling indicates that PDA are very similar to prostatic acinar adenocarcinoma. Among the differentially expressed proteins screened and verified in this study, the expression of GPAT2, LLGL2, MAMDC4 and PCSK9 is increased in PDA, while that of SMIM6 is reduced in PDA. The expression of LLGL2 shows significantly different patterns between PDA and prostatic acinar carcinoma, and thus may help differentiate PDA from prostatic acinar adenocarcinoma in clinical practice.

ABSTRACT

The blood flow in the aortic arch and branch vessels in vitro is simulated, and the blood model is optimized with a non-Newtonian model.A numerical simulation analysis is conducted based on bidirectional fluid-solid coupling to analyze the hemodynamic characteristics(blood flow velocity, vascular wall pressure and vascular wall stress)in a cardiac cycle, and discuss their relationships with the formation of aortic dissection. It is concluded that the long-term existence of"chaotic"blood flow distribution in the blood vessel and the sudden changes of wall pressure and wall stress are liable to cause changes in the structure and function of the cells of the arterial wall, and ultimately induce the formation of aortic dissection. The study provides a more reliable basis for medical diagnosis, and further protects the life, health and safety of patients.

ABSTRACT

Objective:To evaluate the image quality of prostate T 2WI reconstructed based on deep learning (deep learning T 2WI) and the diagnostic performance for prostate cancer (PCa) in the transition zone. Methods:Totally 79 patients who underwent prostate MRI for elevated prostate specific antigen from December 2020 to September 2022 were prospectively consecutively collected from Beijing Hospital. Scan sequences included axial standard T 2WI, deep learning T 2WI, and diffusion-weighted imaging. The scan time was recorded. The image quality was scored subjectively including image quality, diagnostic confidence, noise level, artifacts, clarity and lesion detectability. For objective evaluation of image quality, signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and contrast signal-to-noise ratio (CNR) were calculated. Two-parameter MRI prostate imaging reporting and data system version 2.1 (PI-RADS v2.1) scoring was performed for transition zone lesions using deep learning T 2WI and standard T 2WI, respectively. The subjective and objective image quality evaluation metrics for deep learning T 2WI and standard T 2WI were compared using the Wilcoxon signed-rank test. For transition zone lesions, the diagnostic performance of PI-RADS scores with deep learning T 2WI and standard T 2WI for PCa was evaluated by the receiver operating characteristic curve based on the lesion (all lesions in the transition zone) and the patient (the most malignant lesions in the transition zone), respectively, using the pathologic results as the gold standard. The area under the curve (AUC) was compared using the DeLong test. Results:Deep learning T 2WI significantly reduced the examination time by 64.6.%, from 4 min 37 s to 1 min 38 s. The scores of subjective image quality of deep learning T 2WI and standard T 2WI all were 5 (4, 5). The differences in image quality and lesion detectability were statistically significant ( Z=-2.32, -2.36, P=0.020, 0.018), and the differences of all other image quality evaluation metrics were not statistically significant ( P>0.05). The SNR of deep learning T 2WI and standard T 2WI were 17.11 (14.09, 21.92) and 9.15 (7.16, 11.17), with a statistically significant difference ( Z=-7.72, P<0.001). The CNR of deep learning T 2WI and standard T 2WI were 20.78 (13.42, 31.42) and 11.05 (7.82, 16.25), with a statistically significant difference ( Z=-7.54, P<0.001). Based on the lesion (40 PCa and 48 benign lesions), the AUC of the two-parameter PI-RADS score with deep learning T 2WI and standard T 2WI for diagnosing PCa in the transition zone were 0.915 (95%CI 0.856-0.975) and 0.916 (95%CI 0.857-0.976), without statistically significant difference ( Z=0.03, P=0.973). Based on the patient (33 PCa and 46 benign patients), the AUC of the two-parameter PI-RADS score with deep learning T 2WI and standard T 2WI were 0.921 (95%CI 0.857-0.984) and 0.939 (95%CI 0.886-0.992), without statistically significant difference ( Z=0.59, P=0.558). Conclusions:Compared with standard T 2WI, deep learning T 2WI of the prostate reduces scanning time while maintaining image quality and has comparable diagnostic performance for PCa in the transition zone.

ABSTRACT

Objective:To evaluate the safety and feasibility of applying injectable cross-linked sodium hyaluronate isolation gel in radical hypofractionated radiation therapy for prostate cancer. Methods:In this prospective study, patients at Beijing Hospital who were pathologically diagnosed with clinical stage T 1-2N 0M 0 prostatic acinar adenocarcinoma by puncture and underwent radical radiation therapy were included. All patients received ultrasound-guided cross-linked sodium hyaluronate isolation gel injection and image-guided intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IG-IMRT). The prescription dose was moderately hypofractionated, with a prescription dose of 60 Gy in 20 fractions for 5 times a week, once daily, which was delivered to 95% of the planning target volume (PTV) of prostate and seminal vesicle. Analyze the prostate rectal spacing (PRS) at the baseline, on the day of injection, during the radiotherapy, 1 month and 3 months after radiotherapy, changes in rectal volume before and after injection, and incidence of rectum-related side effects. The changes in all indexes before and after injection were analyzed by using t-test. Results:A total of 13 patients were enrolled from March 2022 to February 2023. The isolation gel maintained morphologic stability without significant spatial changes during radiotherapy, and the mid-prostate had the best effect, with PRS up to 1 cm. At 3 months after radiotherapy, the isolation gel was seen to decreased in volume with a certain absorptive capacity. The irradiated volume of rectum was decreased significantly in all patients after gel injection, and the mean volumes of rectal V 60 Gy , V 50 Gy , V 30 Gy , and V 20 Gy before and after injection were 1.923% vs. 0.280%, 10.255% vs. 3.172%, 29.602% vs. 18.800%, and 49.452% vs. 40.259% (all P<0.005). The average values (range) of rectal V 60 Gy , V 50 Gy , V 30 Gy , V 20 Gy decreases were 84.9%( 29% - 100%), 69.6%(27%-100%), 36.3%(0%-75%), and 17.8%(0%-50%), respectively. No grade 3-4 side effects occurred in all patients, and there were no common grade 1-2 rectal side effects such as diarrhea, rectal bleeding, proctitis and anal pain, etc. Only one patient developed grade 1 constipation during radiotherapy. Conclusion:Injection of Chinese made cross-linked sodium hyaluronate isolation gel can significantly reduce the irradiated volume of rectum and the incidence of rectal toxicities in prostate cancer patients undergoing radical radiotherapy.

ABSTRACT

Objective:To investigate the prognostic value of colony forming unit-granulocyte and macrophage (CFU-GM) in allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-HSCT).Methods:Seventy-three patients who received allo-HSCT in Hebei Yanda Lu Daopei Hospital from February 2015 to January 2017 were selected. According to the level of CFU-GM from bone marrow (BM) culture at the time of allo-HSCT, the patients were fit into high CFU-GM group and low CFU-GM group. The overall survival rate (OS) and relapse-free mortality rate (NRM) of patients after transplantation were tested by χ2 test after a follow-up of 37.0 (12.5, 50.5) months. Kaplan-Meier method was used to compare OS and event-free survival (EFS) of patients with different CFU-GM levels. Logistic regression model was used to analyze the prognostic factors. Cox regression model was used to further analyze the prognostic risk of patients. Results:Compared with the low CFU-GM group, the high CFU-GM group had a higher OS (81.40% vs 60.00%, χ2=4.067, P=0.044) and a lower NRM (11.63% vs 36.67%, χ2=6.474, P=0.011). Compared with the low CFU-GM group, the mean OS time (57.6 and 37.1 months, respectively, P=0.039) and the mean EFS time (61.7 and 38.5 months, respectively, P=0.011) were significantly higher in the high CFU-GM group. Logistic regression analysis showed that both the level of CFU-GM and BM MNC were significant influencing factors of OS ( OR=2.917, 95% CI 1.011-8.418, P=0.048 and OR=1.510, 95% CI 1.058-2.154, P=0.023, respectively) and EFS ( OR=4.400, 95% CI 1.336-14.492, P=0.015 and OR=1.447, 95% CI 1.002-2.090, P=0.049, respectively)after transplantation. The level of CFU-GM was an independent risk factor for evaluating EFS ( HR=0.279, 95% CI 0.097-0.805, P=0.018). BM MNC was an independent risk factor for OS ( HR=1.345, 95% CI 1.052-1.720, P=0.018). Conclusion:The level of CFU-GM and BM MNC were related to the prognosis of allo-HSCT. The patients in the high CFU-GM group had higher EFS.

ABSTRACT

To discuss the effect of varicella vaccination on the clinical characteristics of herpes zoster (shingles) cases aged 20 years and under, and analyze its clinical features. Based on the Yichang Health Big Data Platform, a descriptive study was conducted to collect the information of cases aged 20 years and under in three medical institutions of Yichang Central People's Hospital, Yichang First People's Hospital and Yichang Second People's Hospital from March 2019 to September 2020. According to the history of varicella vaccine, cases were divided into vaccination group and non-vaccination group, and their clinical features and outcomes were compared. The results showed that 46 shingles cases, aged from 7 to 20 years old, were included in this study. 26 males (56.5%), 20 females (43.5%), 15 cases in vaccination group (32.6%) and 31 cases in non-vaccination group (67.4%). 28 cases had thoracic involvement, followed by lumbar (n=8), cranial (n=7) involvements and extremities (n=7). The spread of herpes skin area: 2 cases involved too large area, 21 cases of 10 cm×10 cm, 14 cases of 5 cm×5 cm, 9 cases of 1 cm×1 cm. Herpes number: 26 cases had 10-49 herpes, followed by <10 herpes (n=9), uncountable herpes (n=7) and 50-99 herpes (n=4). The clinical course[M(Q1,Q3)] lasted 20.5 (13.5,24.8) d averagely, 5 cases had postherpetic neuralgia (PHN) and 1 case had respiratory complications. Shingles decrustation time was significantly shorter in vaccination group (Z=-2.01, P<0.05), and there was no significant difference in other characteristics by vaccination. In conclusion, the number and spread of shingles in most children and adolescents are less, and the complications such as PHN are less. Varicella vaccination can reduce the decrustation time and relieve shingles cases with some clinical symptoms.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To analyze the genetic characteristics of varicella-zoster virus (VZV) in people aged 20 years and under in Yichang City of Hubei Province from 2019 to 2020. Methods: Based on the Yichang Health Big Data Platform, we investigated cases 20 and under clinically diagnosed as herpes zoster in three hospitals from March 2019 to September 2020. Collecting vesicle fluid and throat swab samples of the cases and completing questionnaires to obtain basic information. Real-time fluorescent quantitative PCR was used for positive identification of the virus. PCR amplification of VZV's open reading frame (ORF) and sequencing of the products to determine the VZV genotype. Analyze mutations at some specific single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) sites. Results: Among 46 cases of herpes zoster, the male to female ratio was 1.3∶1 (26∶20) and the age ranged from 7 to 20 years old. Fifteen cases had been vaccinated against varicella, including 13 and 2 cases of 1 and 2 doses, respectively. VZV strains were detected in 34 samples (73.91%), all belonging to Clade 2. Phylogenetic tree analysis of the nucleotide of ORF22 showed, compared with Clade 2 referenced strains, the sequence matching degree of nucleotide for all 34 samples was 99.0% to 100.0%. Conclusion: The main VZV strain causing herpes zoster in people aged 20 years and under in Yichang from 2019 to 2020 was Clade 2.

ABSTRACT

Morphine is a frequently used analgesic that activates the mu-opioid receptor(MOR),which has prominent side effects of tolerance.Although the inefficiency of morphine in inducing the endocytosis of MOR underlies the development of morphine tolerance, currently, there is no effective therapy to treat morphine tolerance. In the current study,we aimed to develop a monoclonal antibody(mAb)precisely targeting MOR and to determine its therapeutic efficacy on morphine tolerance and the underlying molecular mechanisms. We successfully prepared a mAb targeting MOR,named 3A5C7,by hybridoma technique using a strategy of deoxyribonucleic acid immunization combined with cell immunization, and identified it as an immunoglobulin G mAb with high specificity and affinity for MOR and binding ability to antigens with spatial conformation.Treatment of two cell lines,HEK293T and SH-SY5Y,with 3A5C7 enhanced morphine-induced MOR endocytosis via a G protein-coupled receptor kinase 2(GRK2)/β-arrestin2-dependent mechanism,as demonstrated by immunofluorescence staining, flow cytometry,Western blotting, coimmunoprecipitation, and small interfering ribonucleic acid(siRNA)-based knock-down.This mAb also allowed MOR recycling from cytoplasm to plasma membrane and attenuated morphine-induced phosphorylation of MOR.We established an in vitro morphine tolerance model using differentiated SH-SY5Y cells induced by retinoic acid.Western blot,enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays, and siRNA-based knockdown revealed that 3A5C7 mAb diminished hyperactivation of adenylate cyclase, the in vitro biomarker of morphine tolerance, via the GRK2/β-arrestin2 pathway.Furthermore,in vivo hotplate test demonstrated that chronic intrathecal administration of 3A5C7 significantly alle-viated morphine tolerance in mice, and withdrawal jumping test revealed that both chronic and acute 3A5C7 intrathecal administration attenuated morphine dependence. Finally, intrathecal electroporation of silencing short hairpin RNA illustrated that the in vivo anti-tolerance and anti-dependence efficacy of 3A5C7 was mediated by enhanced morphine-induced MOR endocytosis via GRK2/β-arrestin2 pathway.Collectively, our study provided a therapeutic mAb,3A5C7,targeting MOR to treat morphine tolerance, mediated by enhancing morphine-induced MOR endocytosis. The mAb 3A5C7 demonstrates promising translational value to treat clinical morphine tolerance.

ABSTRACT

Alveolar echinococcosis is a zoonotic parasitic disease caused by an infection with Echinococcosis multilocularis. The liver is the primary organ of alveolar echinococcosis.Alveolar echinococcosis is usually characterized by invasive growth and consequently iscalled"parasitic cancer."Resection of radical lesions is a preferred and effective treatment for hepatic alveolar echinococcosis.End-stage hepatic alveolar echinococcosis often occurs with parasiticcirrhosis, such as secondary biliary cirrhosis, congestive liver cirrhosis or Budd-Chiari syndrome.Few studies have examined hepatic multilocular echinococcosis leading to cirrhosis. This article reviews the aspects of hepatic alveolar echinococcosis involving the invasion of important blood vessels and bile ducts, thereby leading to secondary biliary cirrhosis and congestive liver cirrhosis caused by hepatic alveolar echinococcosis.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE@#To explore the feasibility of using indocyanine green angiography in mapping the superficial temporal vessels and assisting design and harvesting of the superficial temporal artery based forehead flap.@*METHODS@#A clinical data of 14 patients with facial soft tissue defects repaired with superficial temporal artery based forehead flaps between October 2015 and November 2022 was retrospectively analyzed. There were 9 males and 5 females with a median age of 9.5 years (range, 3-38 years). The forehead flaps were used to reconstruct facial soft tissue defects following excision of facial scar (8 cases) or congenital melanocyte nevus (6 cases). The size of defects ranged from 3 cm×2 cm to 24 cm×9 cm. Before operation, the indocyanine green angiography was used to map the superficial temporal artery and vein, and to analyze the relationship of the arteries and veins. The forehead flaps with unilateral superficial temporal fascia as the pedicle was transferred to repair the small facial defect in 2 cases. The facial pedicle contained the frontal branch of the superficial temporal artery and 2 cm of the superficial temporal fascia around the vessel, and the tiny accompanying vein of the frontal branch of the superficial temporal artery was used as the outflow of the flap. The forehead flaps with the skin pedicle including bilateral or unilateral superficial temporal fascia and the overlying skin was pre-expanded and transferred to repair the large facial defect in 12 cases. The skin pedicle contained the frontal branch of superficial temporal artery and one of main branches of superficial temporal vein. Among the 12 cases, the frontal branch of superficial temporal vein was used as the outflow in 4 cases, and the parietal branch was used as the outflow in 8 cases. The size of the flaps ranged from 3 cm×2 cm to 30 cm×13 cm. The skin pedicles were divided at 3 weeks after the flap transfer.@*RESULTS@#Indocyanine green angiography could clearly showed the course and branching of the superficial temporal artery and vein. Individual differences existed in the location where the frontal branch of the superficial temporal artery entered the forehead. The superficial temporal vein had great variability and did not follow the artery. One patient had expander-related complication, which resulted in 3-cm flap necrosis. The necrotic tissue was debrided and repaired with skin grafting. The other flaps totally survived and the incisions healed by first intention. All patients were followed up 2-24 months, with a median of 11.5 months. The color, texture, and thickness of the flaps matched well with those of recipient sites. Hypertrophic scar was not observed in recipient or donor site. All patients were satisfied with the reconstructive outcomes.@*CONCLUSION@#Indocyanine green angiography can clearly visualize the course and the branches of the superficial temporal arteries and veins, which can help surgeons understand the position, distribution, and concomitant relationship of the superficial temporal vessels, and make a rational surgical plan of the forehead flap.
