ABSTRACT

We report the diagnosis and treatment of two cases of fetal intestinal volvulus. Case 1 presented to Gansu Provincial Maternity and Child-care Hospital due to reduced fetal movements at 33 +4 weeks of gestation. Case 2 was referred to our hospital from a local hospital because of fetal bowel dilatation by ultrasound at 32 +5 weeks. Both cases were found to have fetal bowel dilatation with typical "whirlpool" or "coffee bean" signs on ultrasound after admission. After multidisciplinary consultation and discussion, an emergency cesarean section was performed, during which the two neonates underwent surgical operation and resection of necrotic bowel loops after confirming the diagnosis of volvulus and intestinal necrosis. Case 2 suffered from pulmonary artery thrombosis after the bowel surgery, and underwent pulmonary artery incision and embolectomy within 24 hours. Both newborns recovered well after the operation, whose growth parameters and nervous system development was normal for follow-up.

ABSTRACT

The structure and diversity of the intestinal flora in rats exposed to high altitude hypoxia was investigated. Animal experiments strictly follow the regulations of Medical Laboratory Animal Ethics Committee of Qinghai University, School of Medicine. SD rats were randomly divided into a control group, a moderate altitude hypoxia group, and a high altitude hypoxia group. The pH value of the feces was measured and histopathological changes in the small intestine were determined by HE staining, and the intestinal flora were characterized by 16S rDNA high throughput sequencing technology on the 3rd, 7th, 15th, and 30th day of hypoxia exposure. Compared with the control group, the fecal pH value of rats in the moderate altitude hypoxia group and the high altitude hypoxia group was decreased significantly. The lamina propria and submucosa capillaries were slightly dilated and congested on the 3rd day in the moderate altitude hypoxia group. In the high altitude hypoxia group the submembrane capillaries were dilated and congested, the lamina propria of the mucosa showed mild edema, and the lymphatic vessels were dilated on the 7th day. The composition and diversity of intestinal flora in these rats changed significantly with prolonged exposure to the high altitude hypoxic environment. A total of 35 phyla, 87 classes, 205 orders, 337 families, 638 genera, and 256 species were annotated in the three groups of rats, including Firmicutes, Clostridia, Clostridiales, Ruminococcaceae, Akkermansia, and Lactobacillus_murinus. Compared with the control group, the intestinal flora of the hypoxic groups showed the most significant changes by the 15th day. There were 9 microbiota of gut microorganisms with relative abundance in the moderate altitude hypoxia group, of which Rikenellaceae_RC9_gut_group bacteria was the most common, there were 19 different microbiota of gut microorganisms with higher relative abundance in the high altitude hypoxia group, of which Ruminococcaceae bacteria was the most common. The results of this study indicate significant changes in the intestinal flora with high altitude hypoxia, and establish a foundation for further research on the initiation and development of diseases and drug metabolism in high altitude hypoxia.

OBJECTIVE@#To evaluate the clinical features of preterm infants with a birth weight less than 1 500 g undergoing different intensities of resuscitation.@*METHODS@#A retrospective analysis was performed for the preterm infants with a birth weight less than 1 500 g and a gestational age less than 32 weeks who were treated in the neonatal intensive care unit of 20 hospitals in Jiangsu, China from January 2018 to December 2019. According to the intensity of resuscitation in the delivery room, the infants were divided into three groups:non-tracheal intubation (@*RESULTS@#Compared with the non-tracheal intubation group, the tracheal intubation and ECPR groups had significantly lower rates of cesarean section and use of antenatal corticosteroid (@*CONCLUSIONS@#For preterm infants with a birth weight less than 1 500 g, the higher intensity of resuscitation in the delivery room is related to lower rate of antenatal corticosteroid therapy, lower gestational age, and lower birth weight. The infants undergoing tracheal intubation or ECRP in the delivery room have an increased incidence rate of adverse clinical outcomes. This suggests that it is important to improve the quality of perinatal management and delivery room resuscitation to improve the prognosis of the infants.

ABSTRACT

To compare the effect of hot or warm property of Chinese medicine(CM) on the skin toxicity of essential oils(EOs) as penetration enhancer in vitro and in vivo, and explore the mechanism. EOs were extracted from WIM of Bichengqie(Litseae Fructus), Dingxiang(Flos Syzygii Aromatici), Huajiao(Pericarpium Zanthoxyli Bungeani), and Xiaohuixiang(Fructus Foeniculi) with warm property, and Ganjiang(Rhizoma Zingiberis), Gaoliangjiang(Rhizoma Alpiniae Officinari), Hujiao(Fructus Piperis), and Wuzhuyu(Fructus Evodiae Rutaecarpae) with hot property, respectively. Then the in vitro toxicity was evaluated by human keratinocyte cytotoxicity. In vivo skin irritation potency was also evaluated through pathological observation after topical administration. The components, especially those located in stratum corneum, were analyzed by GC-MS. The main components, namely monoterpenes and sesquiterpenes, of EOs extracted from CM with hot property,were detected for the interaction with keratino-lipid ceramide 3 by molecular simulation technology; and the interaction energy value was calculated based on the optimal conformation. It was found that the skin cell toxicity of EOs from CM with hot property was significantly higher than that of EOs from CM with warm property. However, there was no significant difference between them by in vivo skin irritation evaluation. Whether from CM with hot property or warm property, EOs showed a significant reduced toxicity compared with azone. Sesquiterpenes(33.56%±19.38%) were found to be one of the main components in EOs from CM with hot property, while almost no sesquiterpenes was found in EOs from CM with warm property. After topical administration of EOs from CM with hot property, sesquiterpenes were demonstrated to be prone to locate in stratum corneum. The results of molecular simulation also revealed that the interaction between sesquiterpenes and ceramide 3 was significantly stronger than that of monoterpenes(P<0.01). In conclusion, the location of sesquiterpenes in stratum corneum resulted in the significant difference between in vitro skin cell toxicity and in vivo skin irritation potency. The EOs from CM with hot property shall be taken into account for further development of potent penetration enhancer.

Objective To investigate the guiding significance of Daping orthopedics operative risk scoring system for senile patient (DORSSSP) for stratified treatment of elderly patients with severe hip fractures.Methods A retrospectively case-control study was performed for data of 440 elderly patients with hip fracture admitted to Second Affiliated Hospital of Soochow University from January 2014 to January 2018,including 130 male and 310 female patients aged 60-98 years [(79.3 ± 6.3) years].According to the DORSSSP scoring system,the patients were divided into low risk group (Group A,n =208),medium risk group (Group B,n =157) and high risk group without SICU transfer after operation (Group C,n =23) and high risk group with SICU transfer after operation (Group D,n =52).The risk prediction results of each group were recorded and compared with the actual complications and mortality.Results (1)According to the prediction of DORSSSP,the number of postoperative complications in Groups A,B,C and D were 52,60,14 and 31,respectively,while the number of actual complications after operation was 45,55,13 and 16.There was significant difference between the predicted value and the actual value of postoperative complications in Group D (P < 0.01),which was not found in other three groups (P > 0.05).The incidence of postoperative complications in Group D was lower than that in Group C (P <0.05).(2) According to the prediction of DORSSSP,the number of postoperative death in Groups A,B,C and D were 0,three,two and four,respectively,while the number of actual death after operation was 0,one,two and one,respectively.The predicted value and the actual value of death were significantly different in Group D (P < 0.05),but were not in other three groups (P > 0.05).The incidence of postoperative death in Group D was lower than that in Group C (P > 0.05).Conclusions There is a good correlation between DORSSSP score and postoperative complications and mortality.Based on DORSSSP score for stratified treatment,the interventional treatment of elderly patients with severe hip fracture after operation into SICU can better reduce the incidence of complications.

Objective To compare the clinical effects of surgery within and over 48 hours for hip fractures in elderly pa?tients. Methods From May 2017 to April 2018, 47 patients over 75 years old with hip fracture were operated in our hospital and met with inclusion criteria. The patients were divided into two groups: within 48?hour group and over 48?hour group according to study design. In the within 48?hour group, there were 22 patients including 5 males and 17 females, aged from 76 to 97 years, with an average age of 83.6±5.0 years, and there were 10 femoral neck fractures (3 total hip arthroplasty, 7 hemiarthroplasty) and 12 femoral intertrochanteric fractures (proximal femoral intramedullary nail fixation). There were 25 patients (7 males and 18 females) in the over 48?hour group, aged from 76 to 98 years, with an average age of 83.8±5.8 years, and there were 10 femoral neck frac?tures (2 total hip arthroplasty, 8 hemiarthroplasty) and 15 femoral intertrochanteric fractures (proximal femoral intramedullary nail fixation). At the end of the follow?up period, the clinical data of the two groups were compared. The differences in the length of stay, cost of stay (excluding implants), postoperative complications within 1 month, hip function score (Harris score) within 1 month and 3 months, and mortality within 3 months and at the end of follow?up were analyzed. Results Both groups were fol?lowed up for 12 to 24 months, with an average of 17.7 months. The hospitalization time (7.9±3.0 d), hospitalization expenses (16 627.5± 6 428.8 yuan), the incidence of early complications after operation (59.1% ) and Harris score (80.9 ± 8.6) in the within 48?hour group were significantly better than those in the over 48?hour group (12.3±4.1 d, 23 799.0±9 785.3 yuan, 88.0%, 71.1±9.2, respec?tively). At 3 months after operation, there was no significant difference in Harris score between the two groups (83.9±7.3 in within 48?hour group and 82.3±8.9 in over 48?hour group; t=0.668, P=0.507). Within 3 months, there was no death inwithin 48?hour group, but 2 in over 48?hour group; and 1 in within 48?hour group at the last follow?up. Conclusion Elderly patients with hip fracture benefit significantly from surgery within 48 hours after admission.

ABSTRACT

Objective To evaluate the changing pattern of pelvic incidence (PI) during peak skeleton growth in adolescence and to study whether PI is associated with the anatomical morphology changes of pelvis and sacrum.Methods This retrospective longitudinal study recruited adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) patients,age between 9 and 18 years with full spine images and have at least 3 times' follow-up.The radiological anatomical parameters were measured in each follow-up including PI,pelvic height (PH),pelvic width (PW),sacral width (SW),femoral head-sacrum (FH-S),sacrum-coccyx (S-C) length,sacrum-coccyx (S-C) distance and sacral curvature ratio.△Parameter and growth velocity of each parameters were calculated.According to the skeletal maturity,all subjects were divided into 3 groups:Low Risser Group (first visit at Risser 0 and follow up through Risser 0 to 1),Moderate Risser Group (first visit at Risser 1 and follow up through Risser 1 to 3) and High Risser group (first visit at Risser 3 and follow up through Risser 3 to 5).Each group has 106 patients.We increased the male ratio to detect the gender difference.A total of 318 AIS patients were included in our study and there are 117 male patients.Descriptive analysis was conducted on the sample age,gender and measured parameter values with mean and standard deviation (SD).The intra-and inter-observer reliability analysis,and the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) were calculated.The correlation between △PI and △parameter was evaluated by calculating Pearson correlation coefficient R value.Results The mean age of all subjects was 12.86 years and the mean Cobb angle was 26.67° at first visit.The peak growth velocity of PI was in Risser I (female 1.5°/year and male 1.6°/year).The PI was also increasing rapidly in Risser 0.5 (female 1.2°/year and male 1.5°/year) and Risser 2 (female 1.1°/year and male 1.4°/year).When the Risser grade reached 3 which was a sign of the end of skeleton growth,the PI still had increasing potential and it increased slower in Risser 4 and Risser 5.There showed significant correlation between △PI and △age in the three group(P<0.05)and the correlation was stronger in Low Risser group and Moderate Risser group than that in High Risser group.There showed significant correlation between △PW and △PI in all groups while △PH and △PI showed correlation only in Low Risser group.There showed significant correlation between △SW and △PI,△FH-S and △PI,△S-C length and △PI (P<0.05) except △S-C length in male Low Risser group and △FH-S in female High Risser group and the Moderate Risser group had the strongest correlation.The △S-C distance and △S-C ratio didn't show any correlation with △PI (P<0.05) expect the male of High Risser group.Conclusion Pelvic incidence is increasing during skeleton growth at the age of 9 to 17.It has the peak growth velocity in Risser 1 and remains growth potential in Risser 5.PI growth is correlated with pelvic height,femoral head-sacrum distance,pelvic width and sacral width.

ABSTRACT

Objective To examine the correlation between the gene of phosphate and tension homology deleted on chromosometen (PTEN gene) polymorphism and schizophrenia (SCZ) associated with the type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM ) in Shanghai Han population. Methods The study recruited 591 long-stay schizophrenic inpatients including 304 with and 287 without type 2 diabetes mellitus, 206 patients with the type 2 diabetes mellitus and 205 normal subjects from Shanghai Han population. SNPs of PTEN gene (rs1234225, rs12569998, rs1234223) were genotyped by using Taqman genotyping. The frequency distributions of allele, genotype and haplotype between groups were analyzed. Results There were significant differences in the frequency of rs1234223 genotype (P=0.01) and allele distribution (P=0.02) between the SCZ with type 2 diabetes mellitus group and the SCZ without type 2 diabetes mellitus group. The difference of genotype frequencies remained statistically significant (P=0.03) but the allele distribution was not (P=0.06) after Bonferroni correction. Haplotype analysis showed that TTC haplotype was less common in the SCZ with type 2 diabetes mellitus group than in the SCZ without type 2 diabetes mellitus group (P=0.02). Conclusions PTEN gene may be a susceptibility gene for schizophrenia with type 2 diabetes mellitus in Chinese Han population. The TTC haplotype may be a protective factor for schizophrenia with type 2 diabetes mellitus.

ABSTRACT

Objective To explore the effect of applying problem-based learning (PBL) and case-based learning (CBL) in the kinesiology experiments. Methods Totally 534-year program undergraduates of Nantong University Medical School were divided into control group (n=26) and experimental group (n=27). The control group received traditional teaching and the experimental group received PBL and CBL teaching. The teaching effect was evaluated by examination and questionnaire. Data were analyzed by SPSS 19.0 and t test was used to compared the average scores of theory and questionnaire, α=0.05. Results The theoretical examination results (89.81 ±1.32) were better than the control group (84.82 ±1.75) (P=0.028). Meanwhile questionnaire survey showed that the experimental group students' evaluation of their teaching methods in promoting learning interest and initiative, combining theory with practice and teamwork con-sciousness were better than the control group students' evaluation of traditional teaching methods (P<0.05). Conclusion The teaching effect of integration of PBL and CBL teaching methods is better than traditional teaching in kinesiology experiments.

ABSTRACT

In this paper, the author study on the effect of drug treatment on sports injury, and makes a comparative analysis of drug effects. In sports, the incidence of various types of injuries is increasing, especially in muscle injury. In the experiment, we compared the effects of three different drugs on the treatment and relief of muscle loss. After 3 weeks, the average optical density of desmin in muscle fiber positive region have decreased, as xiaotong plaster [0.4708 +/- 0.0126], votalin [0.5124 +/- 0.0264] and placebo [0.3856 +/- 0.0312]. It has a certain effect to promote the repair and regeneration of desmin expression by drugs. Through the analysis of the effect of drug intervention on sports injury repair, we can effectively improve the therapeutic effect of sports injury

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND:It is wel known that long-term aerobic exercise aleviates renal dysfunction in spontaneously hypertensive rats. However, the underlying molecular mechanism remains unclear. OBJECTIVE:To investigate the effect of long-term aerobic exercise on endogenous formation of hydrogensulfide in the kidney of spontaneously hypertensive rats. METHODS:Rat models of long-term aerobic exercise were established and randomly assigned to four groups: Wistar-Kyoto (WKY) rat static group, WKY rat exercise group, spontaneously hypertensive rat static group and spontaneously hypertensive rat exercise group. Moderate-intensity exercise on treadmil was given for 12 weeks. At 24 hours after model establishment, weight was weighted. Blood pressure was detected in the caudal artery. Blood and urine were colected for measuring biochemical indicators related to kidney functions. The degree of glomerular sclerosis was observed. Hydrogen sulfide production activity was detected in the kidney. RT-PCR was used to detect mRNA expression levels of hydrogen sulfide production-related enzymes. Simultaneously, oxidative stress of the kidney was observed. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION:(1) Long-term aerobic exercise obviously reduced body mass, systolic blood pressure and diastolic blood pressure, increased glomerular filtration rate and renal blood flow, decreased serum creatinine and urea nitrogen levels, urinary albumin levels, significantly reduced glomerular sclerosis score, increased hydrogen sulfide content in plasma and the rate of hydrogen sulfide formation in renal tissue, up-regulated cystathionine γ-lyase expression, obviously diminished malondialdehyde content in serum and kidney, and remarkably increasedthereduced glutathione and oxidized glutathione ratio in spontaneously hypertensive rats. (2) Results indicated that long-term aerobic exercise could increase the generation of endogenous hydrogen sulfide in kidney, lessen oxidative stress in the kidney, and amelioraterenal dysfunction in spontaneously hypertensive rats.

ABSTRACT

Health ⅦProject was first implemented and financed by the international organizations in Shanghai from 1996 to 2002.It is an innovative, representative and advanced project of preventing and controlling non-communicable disease ( NCD) by means of health promotion.The project subverted the traditional means and methods in chronic disease prevention and control, introduced the advanced international theory and methods, and explored the health promotion methods suitable for China's national conditions in NCD, STD/AIDS and accidental injuries prevention and control.These yielded good project results and effective experiences were expected to be generalized widely. The project consisted of four aspects: organization development and policy reform, human resource development, surveillance and intervention, which were linked up each other and mutually promoted.The strategies design adopted principles of localization focusing on health promotion, intervention different in strategies to specific risk factors and for different targeted population, emphasis on the implementation framework of comprehensive intervention.The project had not only achieved distinct results, but also introduced and localized an advanced international health promotion idea and methods of NCD prevention and control.And innovatively were developed successful integrated NCD control pattern, implementation framework and technical route.Meanwhile, a team of professionals in NCD prevention and control had been trained. Considering the sustainability, the study suggests five critical links and three sustainable development factors in NCD comprehensive prevention.Proposals are given as to how to integrate health education and health promotion into disease prevention and control .

OBJECTIVE@#To investigate the repairing effect of low intensity pulsed ultrasound (LIPUS) on the Beagle canines periodontal bone defect.@*METHODS@#A total of 12 Beagle dogs with periodontal bone defect model were randomly divided into control group, LIPUS group, guided tissue regeneration (GTR) group and LIPUS+GTR group, with three in each. After completion of the models, no other proceeding was performed in control group; LIPUS group adopt direct exposure to radiation line LIPUS processing 1 week after modeling; GTR group adopted treatment with GTR, following the CTR standard operation reference; LIPUS+GTR group was treated with LIPUS joint GTR. Temperature change before treatment and histopathological change of periodontal tissue after repair was observed.@*RESULTS@#There was no significant difference in temperature changes of periodontal tissue between groups (P>0.05). The amount and maturity of LIPUS+GTR group were superior to other groups; new cementum, dental periodontal bones of GTR group were superior to the control group but less than LIPUS group; new collagen and maturity of the control group is not high relatively.@*CONCLUSIONS@#LIPUS can accelerate the calcium salt deposition and new bone maturation, thus it can serve as promoting periodontal tissue repair, and shortening the periodontal tissue repair time.

ABSTRACT

<p><b>OBJECTIVE</b>To evaluate levels of lead (Pb) and cadmium (Cd) in the breast milk in the second postpartum month, to investigate the relationship between Pb/Cd levels in breast milk and some sociodemographic parameters, and to explore whether these levels affect the infants' physical status or the mothers' psychological status (postpartum depression).</p><p><b>METHODS</b>A cross-sectional study was conducted between November 2009 and December 2010. Altogether 170 healthy mothers were enrolled from Nanjing Maternity and Child Health Care Hospital. The inclusion criteria were: voluntary to participate in this study, healthy, with no chronic disease, breastfeeding in the second postpartum month, living in a suburban but not non-industrial area of Nanjing, and not occupationally exposed to toxic metals. All the mothers completed a questionnaire and were evaluated based on the Edinburgh Postpartum Depression Scale (EPDS) to identify the risk of postpartum depression. Pb and Cd levels in breast milk were determined by inductively coupled plasma mass spectroscopy. The infants of these mothers were examined for their z scores of weight for age, length for age, head circumference for age, and body mass index for age.</p><p><b>RESULTS</b>The median breast milk levels of Pb and Cd were 40.6 μg/L and 0.67 μg/L, respectively. In 164 (96.5%) of the 170 samples, Pb levels were higher than the limit reported by the World Health Organization (> 5 μg/L). Breast milk Cd level was > 1 μg/L in 54 (31.8%) mothers. The mothers with a history of anemia had a higher breast milk Pb level than those without a history of anemia (41.1 μg/L vs. 37.9 μg/L, P = 0.050). The median breast milk Cd level in those who were active and passive smokers during pregnancy was significantly higher than that in non-smokers (0.88 μg/L vs. 0.00 μg/L, P = 0.025). The breast milk Cd level in the mothers not taking iron and vitamin supplements for 2 months postpartum was higher than in those taking the supplements (iron supplement: 0.74 μg/L vs. 0.00 μg/L, P = 0.025; vitamin supplement: 0.78 μg/L vs. 0.00 μg/L, P = 0.005). Breast milk Cd level at the second postpartum month was negatively correlated with the z scores of head circumference (r = - 0.248, P = 0.042) and weight for age at birth (r =- 0.241, P = 0.024) in girls. No correlation was found between the breast milk Pb/Cd levels and the EPDS scores.</p><p><b>CONCLUSION</b>Considering the high levels of Pb and Cd in breast milk in this study, breast milk monitoring programs are necessary.</p>

ABSTRACT

The pluripotent state between human and mouse embryonic stem cells is different. Pluripotent state of human embryonic stem cells (ESCs) is believed to be primed and is similar with that of mouse epiblast stem cells (EpiSCs), which is different from the naïve state of mouse ESCs. Human ESCs could be converted into a naïve state through exogenous expression of defined transcription factors (Hanna et al., 2010). Here we report a rapid conversion of human ESCs to mouse ESC-like naïve states only by modifying the culture conditions. These converted human ESCs, which we called mhESCs (mouse ESC-like human ESCs), have normal karyotype, allow single cell passage, exhibit domed morphology like mouse ESCs and express some pluripotent markers similar with mouse ESCs. Thus the rapid conversion established a naïve pluripotency in human ESCs like mouse ESCs, and provided a new model to study the regulation of pluripotency.

ABSTRACT

<p><b>OBJECTIVES</b>To review degenerative lumbar disease treated with Wallis and the re-herniation cases after the implantation of Wallis, so as to evaluate the effect of the device.</p><p><b>METHODS</b>From January 2009 to June 2010, a retrospective analysis was done and 48 patients (30 males and 18 females) with an average age of 43 years (ranging from 17 to 69 years), who received stabilization of the segment using the Wallis device, were reviewed. The involved segments included: 4 cases at L(3-4), 38 cases at L(4-5), 6 cases at L(5)-S(1). Preoperative and postoperative visual analogue scales (VAS) and Oswestry disability index (ODI) were recorded to evaluate the clinical efficiency, imageology diversity was assessed by X-rays and MRI.</p><p><b>RESULTS</b>All cases received fenestration and the implantation of Wallis. No surgery related complications were recorded. There were 48 cases were followed up. The average follow-up period was (20 ± 4) months (12 - 30 months). The average ODI score dropped from 46 ± 10 to 24 ± 7 (t = 12.765, P < 0.05). The average VAS for back and leg pain dropped from 8.1 ± 1.6 to 2.1 ± 1.1(t = 21.881, P < 0.05). Six patients with recurrent lower back and leg pain were diagnosed by MRI, as recurrent herniation (6/48, 12.5%). All re-herniation occurred at L(4-5) level, between 2 and 13 months after the surgery. Three of the 6 patients underwent additional discectomy and fusion, others received conservative treatment.</p><p><b>CONCLUSIONS</b>Although existing problems such as recurrence after surgery, the clinical outcome of Wallis in treating protrusion of lumbar intervertebral disc and lumbar stenosis is satisfied in middle-early stage.</p>

ABSTRACT

<p><b>OBJECTIVE</b>This study examined the effects of maternal deficiency of folic acid during pregnancy on pulmonary development and protein A (SP-A) expression in newborn rats in order to explore the possible mechanism of lung developmental disorders.</p><p><b>METHODS</b>Thirty-six adult Sprague-Dawley female rats were randomly assigned into two groups: control and study (n=18). The study and the control groups were fed with fodder containing folic acid or not respectively. Two weeks later, the female rats in the two groups copulated with normal male rats. Newborn rats were sacrificed at 1, 7 and 14 days after birth (8 pups at each time point). Lung sections were stained with hematoxylin and eosin for histological examination. SP-A expression of protein and mRNA were determined by immunohistochemistry and real-time quantitative RT-PCR, respectively.</p><p><b>RESULTS</b>The newborn rats from the study group showed damaged lung tissue structures. The mean optical density of type II cells with positive expression of SP-A decreased significantly from 1 to 14 days in newborn rats of the study group compared with the control newborn rats (P<0.05). The real-time quantitative RT-PCR showed that the expression of lung SP-A mRNA also decreased significantly from 1 to 14 days in newborn rats of the study group compared with control newborn rats (P<0.05).</p><p><b>CONCLUSIONS</b>Maternal deficiency of folic acid during pregnancy can decrease the expression of SP-A in lung tissues of newborn rats, which might lead to the disorder of lung development maturation.</p>

ABSTRACT

<p><b>OBJECTIVE</b>To study the effect of minimally invasive treatment with the locking compression plate (LCP) in the treatment of intertrochanteric fractures in the elderly age.</p><p><b>METHODS</b>Twenty-eight cases of intertrochanteric fracture were retrospective studied from August 2007 to January 2009, included 13 males and 15 females with an average age of 78.6 years ranging from 70 to 102 years. All the 28 patients were treated with minimally invasive operations with locking compression plates. The time from injury to operation was ranged from 3 to 8 days (with an average of 4.5 days).</p><p><b>RESULTS</b>The operation time was from 40 to 90 minutes (with an average of 55 minutes). The average bleeding volume during the operation was 70 ml (from 50 to 150 ml). One patient died during hospital stay. Twenty-five patients were followed up from 6 months to 2 years with an average of 15 months after operation. The fracture healing time was from 10 to 12 weeks (10.4 weeks in average). According to an evaluation standard of HUANG Gong-yi, the results were excellent in 20 cases,good in 4 cases, poor in 1 case.</p><p><b>CONCLUSION</b>Minimally invasive approaches with LCP could treat the elder intertrochanteric fractures with the advantages such as minimal invasive, stable fixation and less blood loss.</p>
