ABSTRACT

Objective:To investigate longitudinal alterations of brain functional complex network by rest-stage functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) and graph theory in patients with temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE).Methods:A total of 13 TLE patients (TLE baseline group) and 13 healthy controls (healthy control group) were enrolled to observe alterations in complex functional network. The subjects were recruited in the Epilepsy Clinic of the First Affiliated Hospital of Guangxi Medical University from January 2015 to April 2018. For longitudinal analysis, TLE patients were followed-up for three years (TLE follow-up group). All participants underwent rs-fMRI and attention network test (ANT). Finally, a cross-sectional study was conducted by comparing the area under the curve (AUC) between the TLE baseline group and the healthy control group, and a longitudinal analysis was conducted by comparing the AUC between the TLE baseline group and the TLE follow-up group.Results:Cross-sectional analysis showed that the alerting function of the TLE baseline group was declined [The tonic alertness reaction time, phasic alertness reaction time and alertness were (727.00±126.07) ms, (692.85±132.37) ms, and (34.15±23.50) ms, respectively in the TLE baseline group, which were (639.87±81.41) ms, (589.50±80.59) ms, and (50.37±14.71) ms, respectively in the healthy control group, with statistically significant differences between the two groups ( t=-2.09, P=0.047; t=-2.41, P=0.024; t=2.11, P=0.045)]; the TLE baseline group demonstrated decreased clustering coefficient in left supplementary motor area (SMA.L)(AUC was 0.162±0.044, 0.189±0.021, respectively; t=-4.14, P=4.67E-04) and left inferior parietal supramarginal angular gyri (AUC was 0.178±0.021, 0.202±0.026, respectively; t=-2.42, P=0.024), and decreased nodal local efficiency in SMA.L (AUC was 0.239±0.045, 0.260±0.022, respectively; t=-4.13, P=4.77E-04) and left inferior temporal gyrus (AUC was 0.233±0.036, 0.253±0.027, respectively; t=-3.03, P=0.006) compared with the healthy control group, and both SMA.L clustering coefficient and nodal local efficiency were positively correlated with TLE patients′ duration ( r=0.652, P<0.05; r=0.611, P<0.05). Longitudinal analysis showed that the global network efficiency of the TLE follow-up group decreased (The AUC of the TLE baseline group was 0.182±0.008, and the AUC of the TLE follow-up group was 0.169±0.015, t=2.73, P=0.017), which was negatively correlated with alertness ( r=-0.617, P<0.05). Conclusions:TLE patients show impairment of topological properties of brain functional network. SMA.L is a significant node in network. Alterations of brain functional network associate with duration. The decline in global network efficiency may be a characteristic of progressive deficit to TLE.

ABSTRACT

Toxoplasma gondii, an intracellular protozoan parasite that infects one-third of the world’s population, has been reported to hijack host cell apoptotic machinery and promote either an anti- or proapoptotic program depending on the parasite virulence and load and the host cell type. However, little is known about the regulation of human FHs 74 small intestinal epithelial cell viability in response to T. gondii infection. Here we show that T. gondii RH strain tachyzoite infection or ESP treatment of FHs 74 Int cells induced apoptosis, mitochondrial dysfunction and ER stress in host cells. Pretreatment with 4-PBA inhibited the expression or activation of key molecules involved in ER stress. In addition, both T. gondii and ESP challenge-induced mitochondrial dysfunction and cell death were dramatically suppressed in 4-PBA pretreated cells. Our study indicates that T. gondii infection induced ER stress in FHs 74 Int cells, which induced mitochondrial dysfunction followed by apoptosis. This may constitute a potential molecular mechanism responsible for the foodborne parasitic disease caused by T. gondii.

ABSTRACT

Objective:To understand the swallowing function of the elderly in welfare homes of Wenzhou City,Zhejiang Province and to analyze the related factors of swallowing dysfunction. Methods:A total of 507 elderly people aged 60 years and over were surveyed by questionnaires in three welfare homes of Wenzhou City from January 2018 to January 2020.Hinds time-limited water drinking test was used to screen dysphagia. Multivariate unconditional logistic regression analysis was used to analyze the related factors of swallowing dysfunction. Results:The incidence of swallowing dysfunction was 26.04% (132 out of 507). Univariate analysis showed that there were significant differences in the incidence of swallowing dysfunction among the elderly in terms of age, spouse condition, self-care ability, health status, taking sleeping pills, cerebrovascular disease, nervous system disease and depression (P<0.05). Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that the following factors were related to swallowing dysfunction among the elderly: age ≥80 years old, taking sleeping pills, cerebrovascular diseases, nervous system diseases and depression. Conclusion:The incidence of swallowing dysfunction in elderly people in welfare homes of Wenzhou City is high, especially those aged ≥80 years who need more attention. In addition, taking sleeping pills, cerebrovascular diseases, nervous system diseases and depression all increase the risk of swallowing dysfunction. Corresponding preventive and intervention measures should be formulated.

ABSTRACT

Onset with fever and back pain, an 81-year-old man had sudden oliguria and progressively elevated serum creatine from normal range to 660 μmol/L within 1 week after receiving contrast agents, various antibiotics, and several nonsteroidal anti-inflammation drugs. Urine output recovered after supportive treatment. However, his serum creatinine level rose again soon after a temporary decline accompanied by gross hematuria with almost normal morphology, nephrotic proteinuria, and hypoalbuminemia. Renal biopsy revealed necrotizing glomerulonephritis. Methylprednisolone was intravenously administrated 500 mg per day for 3 days, followed by oral glucocorticoids and cyclophosphamide. Gradually the patient′s serum creatinine descended to 144 μmol/L.

ABSTRACT

A 65-year-old woman presented with intermittent right hand numbness and elevated serum creatinine for more than 2 months. The histological examination of kidney biopsy showed renal arterioles occlusion and interstitial fibrosis. Pathological abnormality was originally considered as a part of systemic atherosclerosis. Thus, rosuvastatin 20 mg/d, fosinopril 10 mg/d, metoprolol 47.5 mg/d and aspirin 0.1g/d were administrated. No improvement of renal function was seen. Further Congo red staining was applied. Diffuse amorphous eosinophilic substance was deposited in interlobular artery and small arteriolar artery. Combined with the abnormal free light chain (FLC) level and ratio (serum κ 340 mg/L, κ/λ 10.932), the diagnosis of systematic light-chain amyloidosis was confirmed. The patient received 3 courses of chemotherapy regimen as BCD (bortezomib 2 mg d1, 8, 15, 22, cyclophosphamide 0.3 g d1, 8, 15, 22 and dexamethasone 40 mg d1, 8, 15, 22). A hematologic partial response was achieved and serum creatinine decreased to 180 μmol/L.

ABSTRACT

One new and two known dammarane-type saponins were isolated from the leaves of Gynostemma pentaphyllum using various chromatographic methods. Their structures were identified by HR-ESI-MS,~( 1)H-NMR, ~(13)C-NMR, 2 D-NMR spectra as 2α,3β,12β,20,24(S)-tetrahdroxydammar-25-en-3-O-[β-D-glucopyranosyl(1→2)-β-D-glucopyranosyl]-20-O-β-D-xylopyranosyl(1→6)-β-D-glucopyranoside(1, a new compound, namely gypenoside J5) and 2α,3β,12β,20,24(R)-tetrahdroxydammar-25-en-3-O-[β-D-glucopyranosyl(1→2)-β-D-glucopyranosyl]-20-O-β-D-xylopyranosyl(1→6)-β-D-glucopyranoside(2) and 2α,3β,12β,20-tetrahydroxy-25-hydroperoxy-dammar-23-en-3-O-[β-D-glucopyranosyl(1→2)][β-D-glucopyranosyl]-20-O-[β-D-xylopyranosyl(1→6)]-β-D-glucopy-ranoside(3), respectively. Compounds 1 and 2 were a pair of C-24 epimers. All compounds showed weak cytotoxicity agxinst H1299, HepG2, PC-3, SH-SY5 Y cancer cell lines. However, they exerted protective effect against SH-SY5 Y cellular damage induced by H_2O_2 dose-dependently, of which compound 1 displayed the strongest antioxidant effect. The present study suggested that G. pentaphyllum has antioxidative potential and the saponins from G. pentaphyllum are considered as the active compounds with neuroprotecitve effect.

ABSTRACT

Objective To explore the outcomes in patients who receive the endovascular abdominal aortic aneurysm repair(EVAR)and have concomitant intra-abdominal malignancy.Methods Between January 2014 and December 2019,all the patients who underwent surgery for malignancy and/or EVAR were retrospectively reviewed.Results Twenty-eight abdominal aortic aneurysm(AAA)patients with concomitant intra-abdominal malignancy were included.The patients were treated by two-stage operation and the priority was given for EVAR in 21 patients.There was no perioperative death or major complications.In the follow-up,one patient developed graft thrombosis and one had type Ⅱ endoleak.There was no AAA-associated death.Conclusions It is preferred that EVAR should come first followed by operation for malignancy.Details of treatment strategy still need further investigation.

OBJECTIVE@#To investigate the effect of long non-coding RNA-TUC338 on the proliferation and migration of lymphoma cells.@*METHODS@#The expression of TUC338 in different lymphoma cells was detected by fluorescence quantitative PCR, cell proliferation by sulforhodamine B (SRB) assay, migration of lymphoma cells by transwell assay, and protein expression in PI3K/AKT signaling pathway by Western blot.@*RESULTS@#The expression levels of TUC338 in lymphoma cells Daudi, U937, BC-3, and Raji significantly increased in comparison with human normal T lymphocytes H9 (t=13.277, 10.103, 16.200, and 26.687, P=0.002, 0.005, 0.001, and 0.000). Compared with NC-siRNA group, the number of cells crossing the chamber of TUC338-siRNA group was significantly reduced (t=30.508, P=0.000), the protein expression levels of p-PI3K and p-AKT significantly decreased (t=16.872 and 18.371, P=0.000 and 0.000), and OD@*CONCLUSION@#The expression of TUC338 significantly increases in lymphoma cells, and silence of TUC338 effectively inhibits the activation of PI3K/AKT signaling pathway, thereby inhibiting the proliferation and migration of lymphoma cells, which has a potential application value in diagnosis and treatment of lymphoma.

Here, we developed a prostate cancer (PCa) risk nomogram including lymphocyte-to-monocyte ratio (LMR) for initial prostate biopsy, and internal and external validation were further conducted. A prediction model was developed on a training set. Significant risk factors with P < 0.10 in multivariate logistic regression models were used to generate a nomogram. Discrimination, calibration, and clinical usefulness of the model were assessed using C-index, calibration plot, and decision curve analysis (DCA). OBJECTIVE@#To investigate the expression of Circ_cgga162 in serum of mantle cell lymphoma (MCL) patients and analyze its potential as a prognostic biomarker.@*METHODS@#The expression of Circ_cgga162 in 86 cases of mantle cell lymphoma and 50 cases of lymph node reactive hyperplasia (RH) were detected by real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR). The relationship between the expression of Circ_cgga162 and clinicopathological features was analyzed by univariate analysis. The relationship of Circ_cgga162 expression with progression-free survival time and overall survival time was analyzed by Kaplan-Meier. The relationship between expression of Circ_cgga162 and prognosis of patients was analyzed by univariate and multivariate analysis.@*RESULTS@#The expression level of Circ_cgga162 in MCL patients was significantly higher than that in control (RH) group (P<0.01). The expression of Circ_cgga162 not correlated with age, gender, B symptoms and LDH (all P>0.05), but correlated with the expression of MCL International Prognostic Index (IPI), Ann Arbor stage, bone marrow infiltration and Ki67 (all P<0.05). In addition, Kaplan-Meier analysis showed that the progression-free survival time and overall survival time of the MCL patients with high expression of Circ_cgga162 were significantly shorter than those of the MCL patients with low expression (P<0.01). Univariate analysis showed that Ann Arbor stage, Circ_cgga162 expression, MIPI, bone marrow infiltration and Ki67 were the prognostic factors for MCL patients (all P<0.05). Multivariate Cox regression analysis showed that Ann Arbor stage, Circ_cgga162 expression and MIPI were independent factors affecting the prognosis of MCL patients (all P<0.05).@*CONCLUSION@#Circ_cgga162 is highly expressed in serum of patients MCL, which relates with the prognosis of MCL patients. Circ_cgga162 can be used as a potential prognostic marker and therapeutic target for MCL patients.

ABSTRACT

The ongoing outbreak of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) as named by the World Health Organization has millions of confirmed cases around the world and has claimed hundreds of thousands of lives. The virus was named SARS-CoV-2 in February by International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses. COVID-19 presents as fever, dry cough, dyspnea, headache and pneumonia. In a small subset of severe cases, the disease quickly progresses to respiratory failure and even death. Since the 21st century, there have been three major outbreaks caused by human coronaviruses, including the severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) that broke out in 2003, the Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS) in 2012, and the recent pandemic of COVID-19. Since 2003, significant progress has been made in the study of SARS-CoV and MERS-CoV concerning their natural origins, pathogenesis, antiviral development and vaccine design. Since SARS-CoV-2 and SARS-CoV are closely related, previous findings on SARS-CoV are highly relevant to a better understanding as well as diagnosis, treatment, prevention and control of SARS-CoV-2. In this review, we highlight recent progresses in the field; compare the biological characteristics of SARS-CoV and SARS-CoV-2; summarize the urgently-needed diagnostic, treatment, prevention and control options; and provide future perspectives for the outcome of the outbreak and research questions to be answered, including some of the difficulties in vaccine development. Hopefully, our comments and suggestions would prove useful for the control of the SARS-CoV-2 epidemic in China and the world.

ABSTRACT

Meiosis is a special type of cell division to produce haploid gametes with intact genome. The behavior of homologous chromosomes during the first division (meiosis prophase I) is the most prominent feature of meiosis. During meiosis prophase I, synaptonemal complex (SC) formed between homologous chromosomes to promote the initiation and repair of programmed DNA double-strand breaks (DSBs), which is necessary for the correct recognition, pairing, recombination and separation of homologous chromosomes. In this paper, we reviewed the recent research progress on the composition and function of SC, discussed how the assembly of SC affected the repair of DSBs, and also summarized the known mutations on SC genes which were responsible for human reproductive disorders. On this basis, we also explored the future research direction of this field.

ABSTRACT

Objective:To assess the value of radiofrequency ablation versus sclerotherapy for perforating venous reflux in the treatment of venous ulceration.Methods:This study included 56 patients with venous ulceration (C5/C6, 56 limbs) treated at Peking Union Medical College Hospital in 2018. The patients underwent radiofrequency ablation (Group A, 30 patients) or sclerotherapy (Group B, 26 patients) of perforating venous reflux.Results:The immediate success rate was 100%. During 1 to 12-month follow-up, 5 patients (1 in Group A and 4 in Group B) had recurrent venous ulcers. Recanalization of perforating veins was found in 8 patients (2 in Group A and 6 in Group B). The rates of free from venous ulcer′s recurrence in Group A and Group B were 92.6%±5.1% and 82.7%±8.0%, respectively. The rates of free from perforating vein recanalization were 88.4%±6.3 % and 61.5%±11.2% in Group A and Group B respectively. Univariate analysis of postoperative venous recanalization and ulceration recurrence revealed significant correlation between operation methods, perforating vein diameter and occurrence of adverse events. Specifically, radiofrequency ablation is associated with better outcome than sclerotherapy ( P=0.016), and perforating veins with diameter less than 3.5mm is associated with better outcome than those with diameter≥3.5mm( P=0.048). By multivariate regression analysis , operation type was the only risk factor of poor prognosis ( P=0.040). Conclusion:Radiofrequency ablation of perforating veins resulted in reduced rates of mid-term recanalization and ulceration recurrence compared with ultrasound-guided sclerotherapy.

Objective:To summarize the surgical treatment of malignant carotid body tumor (MCBT).Methods:A retrospective analysis of 14 MCBT patients admitted at our hospital from Mar 2005 to Nov 2019 was made, and the imaging data, surgical records, perioperative complications and follow-up data were collected.Results:There were 8 males and 6 females, with an average age of (40.8±11.3) years. 10 patients underwent surgical resection of CBT, with one case undergoing tumor enucleation only, nine cases underwent internal carotid artery reconstruction, and all patients underwent intraoperative lymph node biopsy.Tumors were completely removed in all 10 patients. No perioperative death or cerebral infarction occurred. The intraoperative blood loss was (955±658.5) ml. Four patients had permanent nerve injury after surgery. The follow-up time ranged 1-132 months. There were no cases of cerebral infarction or death, and the reconstructed graft remained patent. Apart from the 2 patients who developed tumor metastasis after surgery, other patients recovered uneventfully with no disease progression.Conclusions:Surgery is still the main treatment for MCBT, but MCBT is large and Shamblin class is more advanced. Therefore, complete tumor removal and reconstruction of the carotid arteries are difficult. Surgery should seek to completely remove the tumor and neck lymph node biopsy should be performed to determine the lymph node metastasis.

ABSTRACT

Toxoplasma gondii is an intracellular parasite that causes severe disease when the infection occurs during pregnancy. Adenosine is a purine nucleoside involved in numerous physiological processes; however, the role of adenosine receptors in T. gondii-induced trophoblast cell function has not been investigated until now. The goal of the present study was to evaluate the intracellular signaling pathways regulated by adenosine receptors using a HTR-8/SVneo trophoblast cell model of T. gondii infection. HTR8/SVneo human extravillous trophoblast cells were infected with or without T. gondii and then evaluated for cell morphology, intracellular proliferation of the parasite, adenosine receptor expression, TNF-α production and mitogen-activated protein (MAP) kinase signaling pathways triggered by adenosine A3 receptor (A3AR). HTR8/SVneo cells infected with T. gondii exhibited an altered cytoskeletal changes, an increased infection rate and reduced viability in an infection time-dependent manner. T. gondii significantly promoted increased TNF-α production, A3AR protein levels and p38, ERK1/2 and JNK phosphorylation compared to those observed in uninfected control cells. Moreover, the inhibition of A3AR by A3AR siRNA transfection apparently suppressed the T. gondii infection-mediated upregulation of TNF-α, A3AR production and MAPK activation. In addition, T. gondii-promoted TNF-α secretion was dramatically attenuated by pretreatment with PD098059 or SP600125. These results indicate that A3AR-mediated activation of ERK1/2 and JNK positively regulates TNF-α secretion in T. gondii-infected HTR8/SVneo cells.

Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis(IPF)is a progressive lung disease characterized by pulmonary interstitial fibrosis and pulmonary dysfunction.Cell microenvironment is mainly composed of cell components,extracellular matrix,extracellular regulators,and liquid substances.Changes in microenvironment components are closely related to IPF.This article elaborates the roles of cell microenvironments including cytokines,mesenchymal cells,extracellular matrix,and unfolded proteins in the pathogenesis of IPF.

The aims of this study were to determine the prognostic value of primary tumor surgery and identify optimal candidates for such surgery among patients with seminoma and distant metastasis at diagnosis. We identified 521 patients with seminoma and distant metastasis at diagnosis between 2004 and 2014 from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results database. Among these patients, 434 had undergone surgery, whereas 87 had not. The prognostic value of primary tumor surgery was assessed by Kaplan-Meier methods, log-rank analyses, and multivariate Cox's proportional hazards model. Survival curves and forest plots were also plotted. Survival analysis indicated that patients who underwent surgery had a better 5-year overall survival and cancer-specific survival than those who did not. Multivariate analyses demonstrated that primary tumor surgery is an independent prognostic factor for overall survival and cancer-specific survival, along with age at diagnosis, M stage, and marital status. In addition, primary tumor surgery still had considerable prognostic value in the subgroup of patients with lymph node metastasis. Further, forest plots demonstrated that patients with M1a stage, N1 or N2-3 stage, and a younger age at diagnosis (<60 years) may benefit from primary tumor surgery. In conclusion, our findings indicate that primary tumor surgery is correlated with improved survival in patients with seminoma and distant metastasis. Furthermore, primary tumor surgery is an independent prognostic indicator for patients with seminoma and distant metastasis.

Objective To investigate the prognosis predictors of anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibody(ANCA)-associated glomerulonephritis treated with glucocorticoid(GC).Methods The clinicopathological data of patients with biopsy-confirmed ANCA-associated glomerulonephritis were retrospective analyzed by retrieving the medical database in Peking Union Medical College Hospital from January 2000 to May 2015. Pathological categories were re-classified. Renal remission rates,infection rates,and death events were compared between intravenous glucocorticoid(GC)pulse therapy group and non-pulse group. Logistic regression analysis was performed to analyze factors influencing the short-term prognosis.Results Among the 81 patients with ANCA-associated glomerulonephritis,49(60.5%)received GC pulse therapy and 32(39.5%)did not. The GC pulse group had significantly lower estimated glomerular filtration rate at baseline(eGFR0)than the non-pulse group(t=3.003,P=0.015)but significantly higher 24-hour urinary protein(24 hUP)(t=2.394,P=0.002)and Birmingham Systemic Vasculitis Activity Score(BVAS)(t=0.049,P=0.013). There was no significant difference in the cumulative amount of cyclophosphamide(CTX)(t=1.336,P=0.245)between these two groups. The overall renal remission rate of GC pulse group in the 6 month was significantly lower(48.7% vs. 79.3%;χ =6.591,P=0.024). Univariate analysis showed that baseline 24 hUP(t=6.222,P=0.017),eGFR0(t=3.727,P=0.046),and pathological category(χ =7.654,P=0.045)were associated with the overall renal remission rate in the 6 month. Multivariate analysis showed the crescent category was an independent factor(OR=20.63,95%CI:2.217-191.973,P=0.008;compared with sclerotic category)for overall renal remission rate in the 6 month,while GC pulse therapy was not an predictor(OR=0.271,95%CI:0.062-1.179,P=0.082). A total of 37 patients experienced infections within 6 months. The infection rate in GC pulse group(55.1%,27/49)was significantly higher than that of non-pulse group(31.3%,10/32)(P=0.042). Univariate regression analysis showed that eGFR0(t=1.912,P=0.049),baseline BVAS(t=-3.360,P=0.001)and GC pulse(χ =6.249,P=0.014)were associated with infection events within 6 months. Multivariate analysis showed that the baseline BVAS was the only predictor with 1.089 times for every 1 point increase in BVAS(OR=1.089,95%CI:1.006-1.179,P=0.034). Conclusions Crescentic category favors renal remission independently compared with sclerotic category. Patients with crescentic category may benefit more from intensive treatment. BVAS acts as an independent risk factor of infection.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE@#To observe whether necroptosis was happened in high glucose (HG) - induced primary cardiomyocytes injury and to investigate the likely mechanism.@*METHODS@#The primary cultured cardiomyocytes were divided into 4 groups (n=9): control group (the cardiomyocytes were incubated with 5.5 mmol/L glucose for 48 h), HG group (the cardiomyocytes were incubated with 30 mmol/L glucose for 48 h), HG + necrostatin-1 (Nec-1) group (the cardiomyocytes was co-incubated with necroptosis inhibitor Nec-1 at 100 μmol/L and HG for 48 h) and hypertonic pressure group (HPG, the cardiomyocytes was co-incubated with 5.5 mmol/L glucose and 24.5 mmol/L mannitol for 48 h). Cell viability was measured by MTT method, reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation was measured by DHE staining. The levels of tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), interleukin-6 (IL-6) and interleukin-1β (IL-1β) were tested by ELISA method. The mRNA and protein expressions of necroptosis related genes receptor interacting serine/threonine protein kinase 1 (RIP1), RIP3, mixed lineage kinase domain-like protein (MLKL) were tested by quantitative real-time PCR and Western blot.@*RESULTS@#The results showed HG intervention decreased cardiomyocytes viability, increased ROS generation, up-regulated the levels of TNF-α, IL-6 and IL-1β, increased RIP1, RIP3, MLKL expressions at mRNA and protein levels. Nec-1 treatment attenuated HG-induced increased cardiomyocytes viability, reduced ROS generation, down-regulated the levels of TNF-α, IL-6 and IL-1β, decreased RIP1, RIP3, MLKL expressions at mRNA and protein levels.@*CONCLUSION@#Necroptosis was happened in high glucose-induced primary cardiomyocytes injury. Inhibition of necroptosis can reduce high glucose-induced cardiomyocytes damage, may be related to inhibition of oxidative stress and depression of inflammative factors releasing.

ABSTRACT

Objective:To investigate the neuroprotective effect of minocycline on the secondary injury after acute closed spinal cord injury in rats. Methods:A total of 24 Sprague-Dawley male rats were randomly divided into saline group (n = 8), magnesium chloride group (n = 8) and minocycline group (n = 8). The closed spinal cord injury model was prepared with balloon compression in the dorsal spinal cord of rat, which was evaluated with magnetic resonance imaging. All rats were successively administered their own drugs for seven days after injury, respectively. They were assessed with BBB score two to 31 days after operation. Their motor-evoked potential and sensory-evoked potential were detected 31 days after operation, and then Luxol Fast Blue was used to observe the area of secondary injury. Results:Animal magnetic resonance imaging showed hypointense in T2 images in T10 spinal cord. BBB score was more in the minocycline group than in the saline group since 17 days after operation (P < 0.05). The amplitude of motor-evoked potential was higher in the minocycline group than in the saline group (P < 0.05), while the area of secondary injury was less (P < 0.05). Conclusion:Minocycline may protect the nerves from secondary injury after acute spinal cord injury.
