ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Electrochemical method based nanoscale hydroxyapatite coating has slow degradation speed (8-12 weeks). Micro-arc oxidation based method could form homogeneous coating on complex surfaces, and this coating promotes cell adhesion and ingrowth in bone tissues. OBJECTIVE: To explore the effect of micro-arc oxidation hydroxyapatite coating titanium alloy on osteoblast proliferation and osteogenic differentiation ability. METHODS: Hydroxyapatite coating titanium alloy materials were prepared by electrochemical method and micro-arc oxidation method. The contact angles of the two materials were detected. Osteoblasts (hFOB1.19) were incubated on the hydroxyapatite coating titanium alloy materials for 48 hours. The morphological changes of osteoblasts on the materials were observed under scanning electron microscope. The cell proliferation was detected by MTT method at 1, 12, 24, 48 and 72 hours. The cell count and alkaline phosphatase activity were detected at 1, 3 and 5 days of culture. At 5 days, the expression levels of bone morphogenetic proteins 2 and 4 were detected by western blot assay. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION: (1) The contact angle in the micro-arc oxidation group was smaller than that in the electrochemical group [(66.5±2.2)°, (52.8±2.1)°, P=0.001 5)]. (2) Scanning electron microscope revealed that the osteoblasts in the electrochemical group had an irregular and shrunken shape, and adhered loosely to the material surface. The osteoblasts in the micro-arc oxidation had a fully outstretched and flat shape, and adhered tightly to the material surface. (3) From 12 to 72 hours, the cell proliferation in the micro-arc oxidation group was faster than that in the electrochemical group (P < 0.05). At 3 and 5 days after culture, the cell proliferation in the micro-arc oxidation group was faster than that in the electrochemical group (P < 0.05). (4) At 1, 3 and 5 days, the alkaline phosphatase activity of osteoblasts in the micro-arc oxidation group was higher than that in the electrochemical group (P < 0.05). (5) The expression levels of bone morphogenetic proteins 2 and 4 were significantly up-regulated in the micro-arc oxidation group compared with the electrochemical group (P < 0.05). (6) These results indicate that micro-arc oxidation hydroxyapatite coated titanium alloy increases osteoblast proliferation and osteogenic differentiation ability.

ABSTRACT

Placenta serves as a temporary fetal organ, which mediates maternal-fetal crosstalk and intrauterine fetal growth. Placental defensive barrier is a fundamental physiological function, which balances maternal immune tolerance to the fetus and resistance to pathogens. This review summarizes the latest research progress on the mechanisms of placental barrier formation from the view of placental development. Recent discoveries have shed light on the cellular and molecular properties of placental defensive mechanisms in syncytiotrophoblast, including autophagy, exosome mediated anti-pathogenic pathways, cell-cell junctions and cytoskeleton networks. We also present an overview of placental barrier dysfunction and its implications in intrauterine TORCH infections.

ABSTRACT

Objective@#This study aimed to measure the basal energy expenditure (BEE) of Chinese healthy adults and establish an accurate predictive equation for this population.@*Methods@#In total, 470 Chinese healthy adults had their BEE measured using the Cosmed K4b portable metabolic system. Multiple linear regression analysis was applied to develop new optimal equations for predicting BEE. The bias, accuracy rate, concordance correlation coefficient (CCC), and root mean square error (RMSE) were used to evaluate the accuracy of the predictive equations.@*Results@#There was a significant difference in BEE between males and females, with 5,954 kJ/d and 5,089 kJ/d, respectively. People living in rural areas expended significantly higher BEE (5,885 kJ/d) than those in urban areas (5,279 kJ/d). Previous equations developed by Henry, Schofield, Harris-Benedict (H-B), and Liu overestimated the BEE of Chinese healthy adults. The new equations derived from the present study displayed the smallest average bias and RMSE from the measured basal energy expenditure (mBEE). The CCC of the new equations was higher than other predictive equations, but it was lower than 0.8. There was no significant difference in the accuracy rate among all predictive equations.@*Conclusions@#Sex and regional differences in BEE were observed in Chinese healthy adults. Neither the widely used previous predictive equations nor the one derived in the present study were accurate enough for estimating the BEE of Chinese healthy adults. Further study is required to develop more accurate equations for predicting the BEE of Chinese healthy adults aged between 20-45 years.

ABSTRACT

@# Objective To understand the medical intention and influencing factors of middle school students with suspected tuberculosis symptoms in some areas of China and to analyze the influencing factors based on health belief model. Methods A total of 2 547 middle school students in six provinces of China were chosen by PPS sampling method. Logistic regression was used to analyze tuberculosis medical intention.based on health belief model. Results Female students, urban students, eastern students and residential students had higher degree on knowledge than other respondents in the same group, which had statistically significant difference(all P<0.05). Middle school students in the western region had a higher degree of perceived disease threat, boys and middle school students in the eastern region were more likely to be reminded and accompanied by family members and friends. The delay rate was 25.4% when students have continuous cough and expectoration more than two weeks. In terms of logistic regression analysis, gender (OR=0.809, 95% CI:0.668-0.980), urban and rural (OR=0.692, 95% CI:0.572-0.838), only-child (OR=0.819, 95% CI:0.676-0.992), perceive the severity of the disease(OR=0.955, 95% CI:0.922-0.989)and prompt factors(OR=0.514, 95% CI:0.429-0.617) were the influencing factors of the tuberculosis medicial intention. Conclusions The health belief model could analyze and explain the influencing factors that affect the tuberculosis medical intention of middle school students in some way. Health education should be strengthened and health behaviors should be advocated according to the characteristics of different groups.

ABSTRACT

The flavonoids are the active ingredients of many Chinese materia medica, with widespread biological activities and a wide range of clinical application. There are many types of flavonoids, and its chemical structure is complex. Quantitative analysis of only one or several valid / indexed components may not necessarily reflect the amount of total flavonoids, with some limitations. The content determination of total flavonoids in effective parts of Chinese materia medica is an important aspect of quality control. The main methods for determining total flavonoid content are as follows: UV-visible spectropho-tometry, fluorescence spectrophotometry, high performance liquid chromatography, capillary electrophoresis, thin layer chromatography, as well as near-infrared spectroscopy and so on. In this article, the methods and characteristics in the determination of total flavonoids in Chinese materia medica were reviewed, so as to provide references for the quality control of Chinese materia medica.

ABSTRACT

Objective To investigate the primary application of 3D printing technique in vascularized fibula resection and grafting for mandible ameloblastoma. Methods The data of 3 cases of unilateral mandibular ameloblastoma were retrospectively collected.The thin slice CT scan of mandible was performed before operation.The scanned original data were imported into mimics 17.0 software for 3D reconstruction.Mirror image of the healthy side mandible was generated by the mirror image tool of the software.Preoperative planning,designing transplantation of vascularized fibula bone,pre-bending and pre-shaping titanium plate,surgical simulation were done by the mirror model.Results All operations were performed successfully,and were in agreement with the preoperative planning.The facial appearance and mandible function were both satisfactory.Conclusion 3D printing technology assisting mandibular ameloblastoma resection and bone graft reconstruction is able to optimize preoperative planning,provide individualized treatment and achieve postoperative satisfaction.

ABSTRACT

[Objective]To investigate the effects of continuous long-term sleep deprivation on rat's behavior,memory and neurotransmitters in hippocampus,as well as determine the effects of prevention of electro-acupuncture.[Method]We used multi-platform water environment to make the rat model of insomnia.The experiment was divided into two sections.Sec-tion one:thirty rats were divided into 5 groups(six rats each group):tank control group(TC),sleep-deprived for continu-ous 7 days group(SD group),three days of recovery after SD group(3d after SD group),six days of recovery after SD group (6d after SD group),eleven days of recovery after SD group(11d after SD group).The term of recovery refers to normal feed-ing and sleeping when rats return to cages after sleep-deprivation.The open-field test was performed following the end time of each group experiment and then the rats were perfused and fixed.Section two:Eighteen rats were divided into three groups (six rats each group):tank control group(TC),sleep-deprived for continuous 7 days group(SD group),sleep-deprived rats treated with electro-acupuncture group(SD+EA group).Rats of SD group and SD+EA group were deprived sleep for con-tinuous 7 days. During the period of sleep deprivation,the rats of SD+EA group were treated with electro-acupuncture 20 minutes every morning.At the end time of experiment,rats were tested by the Morris water maze and then perfused and get specimens.[Results]Section one:the statistical analysis of outcome of open-field test showed:as compared to the TC group,the scores of rat's horizontal movement and vertical movement were significantly fewer in the SD group(P<0.05).Af-ter 3,6,or 11 days recovery of sleep,the scores increased significantly as compared with SD group(P<0.05). Although, the outcome of open-field test in the 3d after SD and 6d after SD groups had the significant difference with TC group(P<0.05),there was no different between the 11d after SD group and TC group(P>0.05).The quantitative analysis of gamma aminobutyric acid(GABA)expression in the hippocampus showed:the SD group shows lower level of GABA when com-pared to the TC group(P<0.05).After 3 days or 6 days of recovery,the expression of GABA is higher than the SD group(P<0.05),and similar to the TC group(P>0.05).In the 11days after SD group,the expression of GABA declined as compared to the TC group and the 6d after SD group(P<0.05).Section two:In the Morris water maze experiment,when compared to the TC group and the SD+EA group,the escape latency period was significantly prolonged and the times of across the plat-form were significantly reduced in the SD group(P<0.05).On the contrary,there were no statistical differences in the escape latency period or the across platform times between the SD+EA group and the TC group(P>0.05).The results of serotonin(5-HT)and GABA in the hippocampus showed:the 5-HT level in the SD group was no significant difference as compared to the TC group and the SD group on 5-HT level,while the 5-HT level in the SD+EA group was reduced as compared to the TC group(P<0.05). In the opposite,the GABA level in the SD group was decreased as compared to the TC group(P<0.05),while the SD+EA group and the TC group appear similarly level(P>0.05).[Conclusions]The effect of 7 days'contin-uous long-term sleep-deprivation may lead to the reduction in the ability of learning and memory behavior of rats.Our results is different with 4 days'continuously sleep-deprivation which was reported on the rats'expression of GABA and 5-HT. Electro-acupuncture stimulating the Sishengcong Acupoints seems preventing the harming of long-term sleep-deprivation on the ability of learning and memory,which probably is through adjusting the disorder of central neurotransmitter expression caused by sleep deprivation.

ABSTRACT

Objective Clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC) accounts for more than 80% of malignant kidney tumors and its pathogenesis has not been elucidated. Our previous studies showed a positive correlation of Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) with the development, progression and poor prognosis of ccRCC. In this study, we first established a G6PD defect ccRCC stable cell line, detected the influence of G6PD knockdown on ccRCC migration, and provided a cell model for further studies on the functional and molecular mechanisms of G6PD in ccRCC.Methods Using the OligoEngine RNAi software, we designed siRNA targeting the human G6PD gene 3′ non-coding region and negative control siRNA sequences, inserted the double-stranded siRNA into the pSR-GFP/Neo expression vector through Bgl Ⅱ and Hind Ⅲ enzyme loci, and constructed Caki-1-G6PD siRNA and Caki-1-negative control cell lines, followed by transfection and G418 screening of the Caki-1 cells. We measured the expression and enzyme activity of G6PD in the cells by real-time RT-PCR, determined the cell migration phenotypes by Transwell assay, and detected the expressions of p-STAT3 and STAT3 by Western blot.Results Morphologically normal Caki-1-G6PD siRNA and Caki-1-negative control cells were seen under the fluorescence microscope. With GFP expression as a marker, the transfection efficiency rate of the cells was 45-55%. The density of the adherent cells at 48 hours was 90% and their transfection efficiency rate was over 60%. Compared with the Caki-1-negative control cells, the Caki-1-G6PD siRNA cells showed significant decreases in the expressions of Caki-1-G6PD mRNA and protein (P<0.01), enzyme activity (P<0.05), relative count of migratory cells (64.0±4.2 vs 30.0±2.9, P<0.01), and the ratio of p-STAT3/STAT3 (0.45±0.05 vs 0.24±0.01, P<0.01).Conclusion The Caki-1-G6PD siRNA cell line with stable G6PD knockdown and a lower migration ability was first successfully constructed, and the decreased migration ability induced by G6PD knockdown is associated with the STAT3 signal, which is contributive to an insight into the functional and molecular mechanisms of G6PD in the development and progression of ccRCC as well as to finding intervention targets for the treatment of ccRCC.

ABSTRACT

<p><b>BACKGROUND</b>Collapsin response mediator protein-2 (CRMP2) has been shown to be involved in ischemia/hypoxia (IH) injury. We determined whether CRMP2 modulates ischemic injury in the retinal of Ocular ischemic syndrome (OIS). This study was to explore the molecular mechanisms underlying OIS in a novel mice model.</p><p><b>METHODS</b>Experiments were performed on adult male C57/BL6 mice that received bilateral internal carotid arteries ligation for 1, 2, or 4 weeks. The mice received injection of calpeptin group before occlusion for 4 weeks or not. The expression of CRMP2 in the retinal was examined by western blotting (WB) analysis and immunohistochemical analysis (IHC). The effects of ischemic injury on retinal were evaluated by fundus examination, fundus fluorescein angiography, electroretinogram, cell counting of retinal ganglion cell (RGC), and measurement of the thickness of the retina.</p><p><b>RESULTS</b>The veins dilated after chronic ischemia. In the electroretinography, the amplitudes of a- and b-waves kept diminishing in an ischemia time-dependent manner. Moreover, the tail vein-retinal circulation time prolonged in the 1- and 2-week group. In comparison, thickness of the retina decreased gradually with the ischemia time elapsed. WB analysis showed the CRMP2 and p-CRMP2 levels decreased in the 2- and 4-week groups. The results of IHC analysis were compatible with our results of WB. The loss of RGCs, decrease of the total reaction time and reduction of CRMP2 was alleviated by intravitreal injection of calpeptin.</p><p><b>CONCLUSIONS</b>These results revealed that bilateral ligation of the internal carotid artery causes retinal ischemia in mice. Moreover, CRMP2 might play a pivotal role during the ischemic injury in the retina and inhibit the cleavage of CRMP2 can ameliorate the IH injury.</p>

ABSTRACT

<p><b>OBJECTIVE</b>To investigate the prevalence of adenoviruses (AdV) and their genotypes in infants and young children with diarrhea.</p><p><b>METHODS</b>A total of 380 children with diarrhea aged less than 3 years were enrolled. The genomic DNA was extracted from stool and PCR was used to detect AdV. Clone sequencing and genotyping were performed for DNA in AdV-positive specimens.</p><p><b>RESULTS</b>AdV was detected in 24 out of 380 specimens, and the detection rate was 6.3% (24/380). A majority of children with positive AdV were aged 2-3 years. The viral sequence analysis of positive specimens showed that the detection rates of enteric AdV41 and non-enteric AdV were 4.2% (16/380) and 2.1% (8/380), respectively, and among the children with non-enteric AdV, there were 2 with AdV1, 2 with AdV2, 1 with AdV7, 2 with AdV12, and 1 with AdV31.</p><p><b>CONCLUSIONS</b>Diarrhea caused by AdV is commonly seen in children aged 2-3 years, and AdV41 is the major predominant strain.</p>

ABSTRACT

In order to solve the problem of selection and in vivo delivery problem in siRNA treatment, hepatitis B virus (HBV) HBx gene which could be targeted by siRNA was studied. The siRNA expression plasmid which specific inhibits HBx expression was obtained by in vitro selection via a dual-luciferase plasmid including HBx-Fluc fusion protein expression domain. The selected siRNA expression plasmid was then encapsulated in PEG-modified cationic liposome, which was devoted into pharmacodynamic studies at both cellular and animal level. The results illustrated that the cationic liposome which encapsulated siRNA expression plasmid could effectively inhibit HBx gene expression both in vitro and in vivo.

ABSTRACT

AIM:To observe the changes of macular thickness in patients after cataract operation. METHODS: A total of 126 patients ( 133 eyes ) were divided into two groups that were included in this study. The group (68 eyes of 64 case) with phacoemulsification combined intraocular lens implantation and ( 65 eyes of 62 cases ) with manual small incision cataract surgery ( MSICS) . There was no complication before and during the surgery. Optical coherence tomography ( OCT) was examined 1, 3mo before and after surgery. The visual acuity and macular thickness were compared after surgery. The SPSS 17. 0 software was used for statistical analysis. The paired t-test was used before and after surgery. Independent-samples t test was used in two groups before and after surgery,α=0. 05. RESULTS: The cataract phacoemulsification group:preoperative and 1mo after surgery, the mean macular thickness was 241. 3±10. 9μm and 279. 7±16. 5μm, with significant difference ( P 0-05). The mean macular thickness was 279. 7±16. 5μm 1mo after surgery and 245. 6±12. 6μm 3mo after surgery with statistical difference(P0-05). One month after surgery and 3mo after surgery, the mean macular thickness were 280. 7±16. 8μm and 246-6±13. 2μm, with statistical difference (P0. 05). CONCLUSION: The macular thickness and macular edema can be found 1mo after cataract phacoemulsification and MSICS. Three months post-operatively, macular edema disappears and does not show statistical difference compared with preoperative. The increase of macular thickness has no obvious relationship with the choice of surgery.

ABSTRACT

<p><b>OBJECTIVE</b>To observe the differences in the clinical therapeutic effects on lumbar disc herniation among warm needling therapy, electroacupuncture therapy and common acupuncture therapy.</p><p><b>METHODS</b>One hundred and thirty-six cases of lumbar disc herniation were randomized into a warm needling group (46 cases), an electroacupuncture group (45 cases) and a common acupuncture group (45 cases). The points were the same in the three groups. The main points were Shiqizhui (EX-B 8), Yaoyangguan (GV 3), Huantiao (GB 30), Yanglingquan (GB 34), Jiaji (EX-B 2) (corresponding tender points). In the warm manipulation group, the warm and dredging manipulation was adopted. In the electroacupuncture group, G6805- II electric acupuncture apparatus was attached. In the common acupuncture group, only common needling therapy was applied without any specific manipulation supplemented. In all of the three groups, the treatment was given once every two days, 10 treatments made one session. After one session of treatment, the comprehensive assessment score of the chief symptoms and physical signs, VAS score and the clinical efficacy were compared among the three groups.</p><p><b>RESULTS</b>The score of the chief symptoms and physical signs and VAS score after treatment were all reduced as compared with those before treatment in all of the three groups, indicating the statistically significant differences (P < 0.05). All of the three therapies could relieve the chief symptoms and physical signs of lumbar disc herniation. After treatment, the total effective rate was 89.1% (41/46) in the warm manipulation group, 88.9% (40/50) in the electroacupuncture group and 71.1% (32/45) in the common acupuncture group. The efficacies were not different apparently between the warm manipulation group and the electroacupuncture group (P > 0.05). The efficacies in the warm manipulation group and the electroacupuncture group were all superior to the common acupuncture group (P < 0.05).</p><p><b>CONCLUSION</b>The efficacies of the warm and dredging manipulation and the electroacupuncture therapy are superior to the common acupuncture therapy in the treatment of lumbar disc herniation.</p>

<p><b>BACKGROUND</b>Anterior capsular contraction syndrome is a potential complication of continuous curvilinear capsulorhexis (CCC). Three neodymium: yttrium-aluminum-garnet (Nd:YAG) laser relaxing incisions decrease anterior capsular contraction but the mechanism is unknown. The present study analyzed the biomechanical mechanism of three Nd:YAG laser relaxing incisions made to reduce anterior capsular contraction.</p><p><b>METHODS</b>A three-dimensional control model and a three-dimensional Nd:YAG model of the anterior capsule with an opening diameter of 6 mm were created. Three incisions of 1 mm in length were made centrifugally at intervals of 120° around the opening circle. The stress alterations of the anterior capsule after CCC with and without Nd:YAG relaxation were numerically simulated and compared.</p><p><b>RESULTS</b>In the control model, the stress was axially uniform in the inner area and relatively high near the inner rim of the opening. Meanwhile, in the Nd:YAG model, the stress level was very low in the inner opening areas, especially near the three incisions. The relaxing incisions in the Nd:YAG model significantly released the relatively high stress on the anterior capsule. Additionally, there was a high stress gradient near the relaxing incisions.</p><p><b>CONCLUSION</b>Biomechanical effects of stress release may be the preventive mechanism of Nd:YAG incision against anterior capsular contraction syndrome.</p>

ABSTRACT

Objective To find out the iodine nutritional status and thyroid function of pregnant and lactating women in the urban areas of Wuwei City of Gansu Province,and to provide a scientific basis for iodine supplementation.Methods Blood and urine samples of pregnant (52 persons) and lactating women (59 persons) were collected in 2009.Urinary iodine content was measured with arsenic cerium catalytic spectrophotometric.Serum free three triiodothyronine(FT3),free thyroid hormone(FT4),triiodo thyronine(TT3),serum total thyroxine (TT4) and thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) were detected with direct chemiluminescence immunoassay.Results The medians urinary iodine of pregnant and lactating women were 274.68,217.88 μg/L.The rates of low urinary iodine (pregnant women below 150 μg/L,lactating women lower than 100 μg/L) were 9.62% (5/52) and 6.78% (4/59).Serum TT3,TT4 levels in pregnant women[(2.48 ± 0.59),(132.18 ± 33.36)nmoL/L] were higher than that in the lactating women[(2.16 ± 0.49),(108.79 ± 28.36)nmol/L,t =-3.123,-3.971,all P < 0.05].Thyroid dysfunction incidence rates of pregnant and lactating women were 17.31% (9/52) and 8.47% (5/59).Thyroid dysfunction was mostly subclinical hypothyroidism.Conclusions Overall iodine nutrition of pregnant and lactating women is in good condition,some individuals have the trend of hypothyroidism.It is necessary to carry out routine monitoring of urinary iodine and thyroid function.

ABSTRACT

Objective To evaluate the effect of iodine supplementation on improvement of developmental quotient (DQ) at the critical period of infant brain development.Methods Pregnant,lactating women and infants less than 3 years old were supplemented with iodized oil in Linxia Hui Autonomous Prefecture(Linxia Prefecture) Gansu Province in 2006-2010.Before and after the intervention(2006,2007-2010),five townships were randomly selected in the north,the south,the east,the west and the center of eight counties(cities) of Linxia.One village was chosen from each of those townships and 20 infants,20 pregnant women and 20 lactating women were randomly selected in each village(insufficient was made up from the neighboring villages).Urinary iodine(UI) level of the infants,pregnant and lactating women were determined by arsenic cerium catalytic spectrophotometry.DQ value of infants was measured before and after supplementation of iodized oil in 2006 and 2010.UI value of pregnant,lactating women and infants was monitored every year after iodine supplementation.Results Before iodine supplementation(2006),the median UI level of pregnant,lactating women and infants was 89.28,84.85,107.3 μg/L,respectively.After iodine supplementation,the medians UI level in 2007,2008,2009 and 2010 were,respectively,pregnant women:136.0,187.8,118.2,175.8 μg/L; lactating women:135.2,159.8,187.5,163.5 μ g/L; infants:139.6,174.7,190.7,168.4 μg/L.Before iodine supplementation,the DQ value of infants was 92.8 ± 16.3,and the average score of gross motor,fine motor,adaptive capacity,language and social behavior was 93.7 ± 20.0,91.4 ± 20.0,92.4 ± 19.0,90.3 ± 20.0,96.4 ± 22.1,respectively.After iodine supplementation,the DQ value of infants was 104.3 ± 13.8,and the average score of gross motor,fine motor,adaptive capacity,language and social behavior was 104.8 ± 21.5,104.1 ± 17.2,104.8 ± 16.1,99.9 ± 19.1,108.0 ± 22.7,respectively,which were higher than that before iodine supplementation (t =-10.43,-10.77,-13.78,-14.28,-9.96,-15.33,all P < 0.01).Conclusions Iodine deficiency at the critical period of brain development can affect the intellectual development of infants and young children at all functional areas of intelligence.Iodine supplementation at the critical period of brain development can prevent mental retardation caused by iodine deficiency disorders.

ABSTRACT

Objective To master the condition of iodine deficiency disorders (IDD),residents iodine nutritional status and implementation of prevention measures in Gansu Province and to provide a basis for developing control strategies.Methods Thirty primary schools were selected in Gansu Province utilizing cluster sampling methodology in 2011,In each selected school,40 children aged 8-10 were randomly selected for thyroid examination and urine samples were collected from 12 children,at the same time measuring the average daily salt intake of domestic residents by 3 days weighing method.On the spot random urine samples and salt samples were collected from a subset of children included in the study.Three towns near the selected school were selected randomly and random urine samples were collected from 5 pregnant and 5 lactating women in each selected town.One drinking water sample was collected for analysis from different sources in five directions(east,south,west,north and central)in each administrative village with the sampled schools.In areas with centralized water supply,two tap water samples were collected for analysis.Results The water iodine median of 83 water samples was 2.02 μg/L,the range was 0.20-36.92 μg/L,and iodine median of 1199 salt samples was 27.4 mg/kg,iodine level in 89.2% (74/83) of the water samples was lower than 10 μg/L.The iodized salt coverage rate was 98.0% (1175/1199),the qualified rate of iodized salt was 90.3% (1061/1175) and the consumption rate of qualified iodized salt was 88.5% (1061/1199).Total of 360 salt samples intake of households were collected,per capita daily salt was 8.5 g,and the range was 2.5-17.8 g.Total of 1200 children thyroid were checked,the thyroid goiter rate(TGR)of children was 2.8%(34/1200) by B-ultrasound and 3.5% (42/1200) by palpation.Total of 359,450 and 450 urine samples of childen aged 8-10,pregnant and lactating women,the urinary iodine median were 216.0,168.6,161.9 μg/L,respectively.Conclusions Great progress has been made in the prevention and control of IDD in Gansu Province.IDD has been controlled effectively and the urinary iodine medians are at optimal levels.

ABSTRACT

Objective To study the impact of hypothyroidism on sperm motility in male rat.Methods According to body weight,20 male Wistar rats were randomly divided into control group and hypothyroidism group (1 ml/100 g/day,0.1% propylthiouracil by intragastric administration for 60 days) 10 rats in eachgroup.Body weight of these rats was observed every 3 days.After the last intragastric administration,all rats were killed.The levels of thyroid hormones [total triiodothyronine (T3),total thyroxine (T4),and thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH)] were measured by radioimmunoassay.Sperm motility parameters[average path velocity(VAP),straight fine velocity (VSL),straightness (STR),amplitude of lateral head displacement (ALH),sperm density(p),curvilinear velocity (VCL),linearity(LIN),wobble (WOB),mean angular deviation (MAD) and beat cross frequency (BCF)] were measured by a WLJY-9000 color-detection system.Results Compared with the control groups[(298.20 ± 12.15) g,(344.00 ± 13.73)g],the weights of hypothyroidism group of the 30 days[(239.00 ± 15.02) g] and the 60 days [(232.67 ± 17.86)g] were significantly lower(t =7.704,11.380,all P < 0.05).The levels of T3[(373.3 ± 101.3) ng/L] and T4 [(4.00 ± 0.89) × 103 ng/ml] of hypothyroidism group were significantly decreased compared with that of the control groups [(1000.0 ± 273.5)ng/L,(44.33 ± 7.84)× 103 ng/L,t =5.262,12.520,all P < 0.05].Level of TSH[(5.77 ± 0.89) × 103 U/L] of hypothyroidism group was significantly increased compared with that of the control group[(1.87 ± 0.70) × 103 U/L,t =8.413,P < 0.05].Values of VAP[(27.45 ± 1.59)μm/s],VSL [(21.08 ± 1.10)μm/s],STR[(70.53 ± 3.48)%] and ALH[(1.96 ± 0.26)μm] of hypothyroidism group were significantly increased compared with that of the control groups[(24.38 ± 2.59)μm/s,(17.99±2.06)μm/s,(65.93 ± 2.71)%,(1.53 ± 0.27)μm,t =2.687,2.404,2.420,3.175,all P < 0.05].p[(5.07 ± 0.74)109/L] of hypothyroidism group was significantly decreased compared with that of the control group [(8.76 ± 1.01)109/L,t =6.463,P < 0.05].VCL[(52.83 ± 5.56)μm/s],LIN[(38.58 ± 3.41)%],WOB[(52.64 ± 3.24)%],MAD [(64.21 ± 6.71) radian/s] and BCF [(8.93 ± 0.62) Hz] of hypothyroidism group were not significantly different compared with that of the control groups[(49.92 ± 6.43) μm/s,(36.52 ± 2.73)%,(52.49 ± 3.49)%,(62.77 ± 7.34)radia/s,(9.32 ± 0.61)Hz,t =0.805,1.089,0.037,0.341,1.033,all P > 0.05].Conclusion Hypothyroidism can affect sperm activity in male rats,decrease sperm density and cause damage to the reproductive system.

ABSTRACT

Objective To evaluate the effect of health education on the target population of iodine deficiency disorders (IDD) in Linxia Hui autonomous prefecture.Methods During 2006-2010,IDD health education was carried out in the target population of Linxia Hui autonomous prefecture,and IDD knowledge of 5th grade pupil and 20-50 years old child-bearing women were surveyed by stratified sampling and questionnaire survey methods to evaluate the effect of health education.Results After health education,IDD knowledge passing rate rose from 55.6% (548/986) and 18.0%(118/657) to 90.0%(1103/1225) and 86.2%(687/797) among pupils and women,respectively.The awareness rates of iodine deficiency in causing goiter,mental retardation and birth born silly children,and the key role of iodized salt in controling IDD were increased from 79.2% (781/986),76.5% (754/986),51.7% (510/986) and 82.3% (811/986) to 88.8% (1088/1225),85.6% (1049/1225),68.7% (842/1225) and 90.0% (1103/1225) among pupils,and from 48.6% (319/657),28.3% (186/657),15.4% (101/657) and 39.6% (260/657) to 86.2% (687/797),70.0% (558/797),46.3% (369/797) and 87.3% (696/797) among women,and all the difference were significant,respectively.Belief rate held by students that health education can prevent iodine deficiency disorders was 87.3% (1069/1225),and 52.9% (648/1225) of the students told their parents about IDD.The rate of consciously purchase of qualified iodized salt was 87.1% (694/797) after health education among women of childbearing age,and the consumption rate of iodized salt was 64.6%(515/797).More than 90% of the people in relevant departments knew iodine deficiency disorders related knowledge,in particular,had a clear understanding of intellectual hazards caused by iodine deficiency,and actively supported and participated in health education in the prevention and control of iodine deficiency disorders.Conclusions Comprehensive health education measures taken through schools and religious organizations has promoted a shift in the behavior,beliefs and attitudes of its consciously purchase and consumption of iodized salt,and integrated knowledge,attitude and practice (KAP).It is a good model of health education through religious organizations in ethnic minority areas.It has promoted the health education feasibility and accessibility,and the effect is more durable.
