ABSTRACT

@#Objective    To investigate the safety and feasibility of laryngeal mask general anesthesia as a replacement of tracheal intubation general anesthesia in the "three-port" thoracoscopic thymectomy via subxiphoid and subcostal arch for thymoma patients without myasthenia. Methods    From January 2018 to June 2019, clinical data of patients with thymoma who underwent the novel "three-port" operation in our institution were analyzed retrospectively. The patients were divided into two groups according to the anesthesia methods, including a tracheal intubation general anesthesia group and a laryngeal mask general anesthesia group. There were 70 patients in the tracheal intubation general anesthesia group, including 42 males and 28 females, with an average age of 45.83±15.89 years. There were 39 patients in the laryngeal mask general anesthesia group, including 26 males and 13 females, with an average age of 43.31±15.64 years. The clinical data of the two groups were compared. Results    The baseline characteristics of the patients in the two groups were well balanced (P>0.05). No massive bleeding, conversion to thoracotomy, postoperative myasthenia or death occurred in those patients. No patient with laryngeal mask anesthesia had a conversion to tracheal intubation anesthesia during the operation. There was no significant difference in the operation time, intraoperative bleeding, intraoperative maximum partial pressure of CO2, lowest partial pressure of oxygen and anesthesia effect score between the two groups (P>0.05). There was also no statistical difference in postoperative aspiration, gastrointestinal discomfort, length of hospital stay, pain score and patient satisfaction degree between the two groups (P>0.05). However, the anesthesia time before operation and the time of awake after anesthesia in the laryngeal mask anesthesia group were significantly shorter than those in the tracheal intubation general anesthesia group (P<0.05), and the incidence of transient arrhythmia, laryngeal discomfort and hoarseness in the laryngeal mask general anesthesia group was significantly lower than that in the tracheal intubation general anesthesia group (P<0.05). Conclusion    The "three-port" thoracoscopic thymectomy via subxiphoid and subcostal arch under laryngeal mask general anesthesia is safe and feasible in the treatment of thymoma without myasthenia, and can be recommended routinely.

ABSTRACT

Objective:To investigate the clinical efficacy and safety of modified Shaoyao Gancao decoction in the treatment of hyperprolactinemia caused by amisulpride. Methods:Ninety patients with hyperprolactinemia caused by amisulpride who received treatment in Kangci Hospital from June 2018 to October 2019 were included in this study. They were randomly divided into the placebo control, control and observation groups ( n = 30/group). The placebo control group was treated with the decoction with the taste and color (without drug ingredients) similar to that of modified Shaoyao Gancao decoction. The control group was treated with Shaoyao Gancao decoction. The observation group was treated with modified Shaoyao Gancao decoction. All patients were treated for 8 weeks. Clinical efficacy, serum prolactin level and Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale score before and after treatment, Treatment Emergent Symptom Scale score after treatment, glucose and lipid metabolism, liver and kidney function before and after treatment were compared among the three groups. Results:The effective rate in the placebo control, control and observation groups was 90.0% (27/30), 96.7% (29/30) and 100.0% (30/30), respectively, and the difference among the three groups was statistically significant (χ 2 = 7.027, P < 0.05). After treatment, serum prolactin level in the observation group [(48.2 ± 15.7) μg/L] was significantly lower than that in the control group [(52.5 ± 13.7) μg/L] and placebo control group [(57.7 ± 16.9) μg/L, t = 7.134, 7.034, both P < 0.05]. After treatment, Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale score in the observation group [(51.02 ± 3.98) points] was significantly lower than that in the control group [(54.07 ± 4.19) points] and placebo control group [(58.13 ± 4.24) points, t = 5.813, 6.317, both P < 0.05]. After treatment, Treatment Emergent Symptom Scale score in the observation group [(5.2 ± 1.3) points] was significantly higher than that in the control group [(4.9 ± 1.4) points] and placebo control group [(4.4 ± 1.2) points, t = 7.011, 7.231, both P < 0.05]. After treatment, blood glucose, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, triglyceride, total cholesterol, alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase levels in the observation group were significantly lower than those in the placebo control and control groups (all P < 0.05). Serum level of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol in the observation group was significantly higher than that in the placebo control and control groups (both P < 0.05). Conclusion:Modified Shaoyao Gancao decoction is highly effective in the treatment of hyperprolactinemia caused by amisulpride. It can reduce serum prolactin level and has good safety.

ABSTRACT

Bariatric and metabolic surgery has been in China for more than 30 years, which has developed rapidly. However, it can be predicted that there will be many opportunities and challenges in the future development of bariatric and metabolic surgery, including the replacement of classic surgical methods, the guarantee of surgical safety, the brave exploration of new surgical methods, the decisive abandonment of bad surgical methods, the implementation of surgical standardization, and the breakthrough of basic and clinical research all mean more efforts. With the continuous rise of the incidence rate of metabolic syndrome and the continuous improvement of people′s health needs, these opportunities and challenges are particularly significant. Bariatric and metabolic surgery will also play a crucial role in overcoming obesity and metabolic diseases.

ABSTRACT

Background@#Porcine parvovirus (PPV) is a single-stranded DNA virus that causes porcine reproductive failure. It is of critical importance to study PPV pathogenesis for the prevention and control of the disease. NS1, a PPV non-structural protein, is participated in viral DNA replication, transcriptional regulation, and cytotoxicity. Our previous research showed that PPV can activate nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB) signaling pathway and then up-regulate the expression of interleukin (IL)-6. @*Objectives@#Herein, the purpose of this study is to determine whether the non-structural protein NS1 of PPV also has the same function. @*Methods@#Real-time quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR), enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, western blot, immunofluorescence assay and small interfering RNA (siRNA) were used. @*Results@#Our findings demonstrated that PPV NS1 protein can up-regulate the expression levels of IL-6 and tumor necrosis factor-alpha in a dose-dependent manner. Moreover, PPV NS1 protein was found to induce the phosphorylation of IκBα, then leading to the phosphorylation and nuclear translocation of NF-κB. In addition, the NS1 protein activated the upstream pathways of NF-κB. Meanwhile, TLR2-siRNA assay showed TLR2 plays an important role in the activation of NF-κB signaling pathway induced by PPV-NS1. @*Conclusions@#These findings indicated that PPV NS1 protein induced the up-regulated of IL-6 expression through activating the TLR2 and NF-κB signaling pathways. In conclusion, these findings provide a new avenue to study the innate immune mechanism of PPV infection.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND@#Super-responders (SRs) to cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) regain near-normal or normal cardiac function. The extent of cardiac synchrony of SRs and whether continuous biventricular (BIV) pacing is needed remain unknown. The aim of this study was to evaluate the cardiac electrical and mechanical synchrony of SRs.@*METHODS@#We retrospectively analyzed CRT recipients between 2008 and 2016 in 2 centers to identify SRs, whose left ventricular (LV) ejection fraction was increased to ≥50% at follow-up. Cardiac synchrony was evaluated in intrinsic and BIV-paced rhythms. Electrical synchrony was estimated by QRS duration and LV mechanical synchrony by single-photon emission computed tomography myocardial perfusion imaging.@*RESULTS@#Seventeen SRs were included with LV ejection fraction increased from 33.0 ± 4.6% to 59.3 ± 6.3%. The intrinsic QRS duration after super-response was 148.8 ± 30.0 ms, significantly shorter than baseline (174.8 ± 11.9 ms, P = 0.004, t = -3.379) but longer than BIV-paced level (135.5 ± 16.7 ms, P = 0.042, t = 2.211). Intrinsic LV mechanical synchrony significantly improved after super-response (phase standard deviation [PSD], 51.1 ± 16.5° vs. 19.8 ± 8.1°, P < 0.001, t = 5.726; phase histogram bandwidth (PHB), 171.7 ± 64.2° vs. 60.5 ± 22.9°, P < 0.001, t = 5.376) but was inferior to BIV-paced synchrony (PSD, 19.8 ± 8.1° vs. 15.2 ± 6.4°, P = 0.005, t = 3.414; PHB, 60.5 ± 22.9° vs. 46.0 ± 16.3°, P = 0.009, t = 3.136).@*CONCLUSIONS@#SRs had significant improvements in cardiac electrical and LV mechanical synchrony. Since intrinsic synchrony of SRs was still inferior to BIV-paced rhythm, continued BIV pacing is needed to maintain longstanding and synchronized contraction.

ABSTRACT

Objectives@#The aims of this study were to assess the associations between parity and metabolic syndrome (MetS) and its components and to evaluate the effects of body mass index (BMI) on these associations.@*Methods@#A total of 5,674 women were enrolled from Jidong and Kailuan communities (Tangshan, Hebei) in Northern China. All participants completed standardized questionnaires, physical examination, and biochemical measurements. Logistic regression analysis was used to test the associations.@*Results@#Compared with women with parity of one, nulliparous women had decreased odds ratios ( s ); those with parity of two had odds of abdominal obesity [ = 1.45, 95% confidence interval ( ) 1.17-1.81, < 0.001], high blood pressure ( = 1.26, 95% 1.03-1.54, = 0.025), elevated fasting glucose levels ( = 1.36, 95% 1.03-1.79, = 0.029), and MetS ( = 1.39, 95% 1.13-1.73, = 0.002); and those with parity of three or more had increased odds of elevated triglyceride levels ( = 1.42, 95% 1.04-1.94, = 0.027) and MetS ( = 1.50, 95% 1.10-2.05, = 0.011) after complete adjustment for confounders. Furthermore, BMI and age subgroups partially modified the associations between parity and MetS and its components.@*Conclusions@#Parity is positively associated with MetS and select components in women. BMI is an important modifier involved in the associations between parity and MetS.

OBJECTIVE@#To explore the effects of taurolithocholic acid (tLCA) and chenodeoxycholic acid (CDCA) on the expression of aorexigenic neuropeptide in mouse hypothalamus GT1-7 cells.@*METHODS@#Mouse hypothalamic GT1-7 cells were treated with culture medium containing 10% FBS (control group, =3) or with 10 nmol/L, 100 nmol/L, 1 μmol/L and 10 μmol/L tLCA (tLCA group, =3) or CDCA (CDCA group, =3) for 12, 24 or 48 h. Real-time PCR was performed to determine the expression levels of proopiomelanocortin (POMC) mRNA in the cells, and the production levels of α-melanocyte-stimulating hormone (α-MSH) were assessed using an ELISA kit. Signal transduction and activator of transcription 3 phosphorylation (p-STAT3), threonine kinase phosphorylation (p-AKT), suppressor of cytokine signaling 3 (SOCS3), G protein-coupled bile acid receptor-1 (TGR5) and farnesoid X receptor (FXR) protein were detected by Western blotting.@*RESULTS@#Western blotting results showed that mouse hypothalamic GT1-7 cells expressed two bile acid receptors, TGR5 and FXR, whose expressions were regulated by bile acids. Real-time PCR showed that the expression of POMC mRNA was significantly increased in the cells after treatment with 10 μmol/L tLCA or CDCA for 24 h. POMC-derived anorexigenic peptide α-MSH increased significantly in GT1-7 cells after treatment with 10 μmol/L tLCA or CDCA for 24 h. Treatment of the cells with tLCA or CDCA significantly increased the expressions of intracellular signaling proteins including p-STAT3, p-AKT and SOCS3.@*CONCLUSIONS@#Mouse hypothalamic GT1-7 cells express bile acid receptors TGR5 and FXR. Bile acids tLCA or CDCA can promote the expression of POMC mRNA and increase the production of the anorexigenic peptide α-MSH. The intracellular signaling proteins p-AKT, p-STAT3 and SOCS3 are likely involved in bile acid-induced anorexigenic peptide production.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE@#To detect potential variant in an ethical Han Chinese pedigree affected with breast cancer.@*METHODS@#The proband and her relatives were subjected to next-generation sequencing using a target capture sequencing kit containing 121 cancer-related genes. Candidate variants were selected by analysis of their type, frequency in population, and segregation with the phenotype. Candidate variant was verified by Sanger sequencing and TA cloning.@*RESULTS@#A c.2013_2014ins GT variant was detected in the BRCA1 gene among all breast cancer patients from this pedigree but not among healthy females. The variant was not recorded in the 1000 Genome Project database or the Exome Aggregation Consortium (ExAC) database. The frameshifting insertion was predicted to form an premature stop codon in gene transcript and can give rise to a truncated protein.@*CONCLUSION@#The BRCA1 c.2013_2014ins GT variant probably underlies the pathogenesis of breast cancer in this Chinese pedigree.

ABSTRACT

Non-tuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) are environmental pathogenic bacteria associated with a series of infections. NTM infection can cause pathological changes of related tissues and organs, namely NTM disease. With the further improvement of examination methods, there is more profound understanding of NTM disease, and its epidemiological significance. This article summarizes the research progress on the cell structure, physiological characteristics, pathogenicity, distribution characteristics of NTM; and the morbidity and prevalence, transmission routes and risk factors of NTM disease, to provide information for effective control and treatment of NTM infections.

ABSTRACT

Objective:To observe the short-term efficacy of 3D-printed custom-made hemipelvic prosthesis in the treatment of primary malignant bone tumors of the pubis.Methods:From June 2017 to May 2019, a total of 5 patients with pubic primary malignant tumor received type Ⅲ hemipelvectomy and reconstruction with a 3D-printed custom-made hemipelvic prosthesis at Department of Orthopedics, West China Hospital. They were 3 males and 2 females with an average age of 36.3 years (range, from 26 to 46 years). Of them, 3 underwent resection of the upper pubic ramus and 2 resection of both pubic rami. All their tumors were chondrosarcomas, with one case of Enneking stage Ⅱa and 4 cases of Enneking stage Ⅱb. Preoperative CT/MRI image fusion was used to determine the tumor-free resection margin, design guide templates for osteotomy and prosthesis, and simulate surgical procedures. A total of 5 3D-printed custom-made hemipelvic prostheses were designed, including 3 ones with an intramedullary stem to preserve partial pubis and 2 ones with a non-intramedullary stem not to preserve the pubis. The functional recovery was assessed by Musculoskeletal Tumor Society (MSTS) scores. The prosthetic position and osseointegration were evaluated by imaging examination. Oncological outcomes and complications were recorded.Results:R0 resection and precise reconstruction were accomplished in all patients. Their intraoperative blood loss ranged from 300 to 3, 700 mL (mean, 1, 680 mL), operation time from 180 to 430 min (mean, 294 min), and follow-up time from 13 to 29 months (mean, 20.6 months). All the 5 patients were alive with no evidence of disease or tumor recurrence. The functional MSTS scores at the final follow-up ranged from 29 to 31 (mean, 29.8). One male patient complained of erectile dysfunction. Fretting wear around the prosthetic stem was found in 3 patients while bone wear on the normal pubic side in 2. Osseointegration was observed in all patients with no complications like deep infection, prosthesis dislocation, prosthetic or screw breakage.Conclusion:Since 3D-printed custom-made hemipelvic prostheses can result in fine short-term efficacy for pubic primary malignant bone tumors, they may be a reliable method to reconstruct pelvic malignant tumors.

ABSTRACT

Objective:To investigate the relationship between angiopoietin-like protein 4(ANGPTL4) and vascular endothelial growth factor(VEGF) in serum and lower limb arterial lesions in Type 2 diabetes mellitus.Methods:Using the method of retrospective cohort study, 164 inpatients with type 2 diabetes admitted to the Department of Endocrinology, Dahua hospital, Xuhui District, Shanghai from October 2017 to December 2018 were selected as the type 2 diabetes group, and 69 healthy people in the same period were collected as the normal control group.According to the ankle brachial index<0.9, diabetic patients were divided into two groups: the group without lower extremity artery disease and the group with lower extremity artery disease.The levels of ANGPTL4 and VEGF in serum were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay.Results:(1)Compared with the normal control group: the concentration of ANGPTL4 in serum of lower extremity arterial disease group and no lower extremity arterial disease group((44.78±15.15), (47.46±10.43) μg/L) were lower than that of normal control group((52.87±12.74) μg/L), the difference was statistically significant (all P<0.05). The serum VEGF concentration in lower extremity arterial disease group and no lower extremity arterial disease group((340.98±76.18), (314.83±75.30) ng/L) were higher than that in normal control group((282.58±81.4) ng/L), the difference was statistically significant(all P<0.05). (2)Compared with no lower extremity arterial disease group: the concentration of ANGPTL4 in serum of lower extremity arterial disease group was lower than that of no lower extremity arterial disease group, but the difference was not statistically significant( P>0.05). The serum VEGF concentration in lower extremity arterial disease group was higher than that in no lower extremity arterial disease group, the difference was statistically significant( P<0.05). (3)Correlation analysis: Diabetes mellitus and diabetic course>10 years( OR 4.594, 95% CI2.540-8.311, P<0.001), fasting blood glucose>8 mmol/L( OR 2.353, 95% CI1.023-5.416, P=0.044), glycosylated hemoglobin>8%( OR 6.442, 95% CI 2.874-14.441, P<0.001) and the increase of VEGF( OR 3.745, 95% CI1.566-8.953, P=0.003) are risk factors for lower limb arterial disease in type 2 diabetes, while the increase of ANGPTL( OR 0.154, 95% CI0.064-0.372, P<0.001) can reduce the occurrence of lower limb arterial disease in type 2 diabetes. Conclusion:ANGPTL4 is a protective factor and VEGF is a risk factor of type 2 diabetes mellitus.Both of them influence each other and participate in its occurrence and development.

Objective@#To analyze the characterisitics of the death cases suspected to be related to vaccination in Fujian Province from 2012 to 2017.@*Methods@#A total of 33 death cases information which was suspected to be related to the vaccinations from 2012 to 2017 were extracted from Chinese Adverse Events Following Immunization Information System (AEFI). The autopsy reports and the conclusions made by AEFI investigation diagnosis expert committee were collected at the same time. The inoculation data were obtained through the Fujian province Immunization Program Information System. The AEFI incidence, rare vaccine reaction incidences and mortality rates following immunization were figured out to analyze the characterisitics of the death cases associated with vaccination.@*Results@#The age of deuths cases was from 26 days to 52 months. Among 33 cases, 23 were males, and 8 were due to vaccine-related reaction, and the others were due to coincidental events. The number of rare vaccine reaction cases from 2012 to 2017 were 2,3,6,8,7 and 7, respectively. The highest AEFI incidence was measles and rubella combined attenuated live vaccine [38.88 (95%CI: 36.85-40.91)/100 000 dose], and the lowest was trivalent oral poliomyelitis attenuated live vaccine [2.01 (95%CI: 1.73-2.30)/100 000 dose]. The highest rare vaccine reaction incidence was measles and rubella combined attenuated live vaccine [15.04 (95%CI: 13.78-16.30)/100 000 dose], and the lowest was trivalent oral poliomyelitis attenuated live vaccine [0.38 (95%CI: 0.25-0.50)/100 000]. The highest mortality rate was inactivated poliomyelitis vaccine [0.26 (95%CI: 0.04-0.54)/100 000 doses], and the lowest mortality rate was measles, mumps and rubella combined attenuated live vaccine [0.01 (95%CI: 0.00-0.08)/100 000 doses]. The Spearman correlation analysis showed that there were correlations between AEFI incidence and rare vaccine reaction incidence (r=0.64, P=0.048), there were no correlations between AEFI incidence and mortality rate (r=-0.34, P=0.329), and there were no correlations between rare vaccine reaction incidence and mortality rate (r=-0.25, P=0.484).@*Conclusion@#Neither AEFI incidence nor rare vaccine reaction incidence was correlation with mortality rate. The main causes of death following vaccination were coincidental events.

Objective To evaluate the learning curve of video-assisted thoracoscopic sleeve lobectomy in patients with central lung cancer.Methods A total of 86 consecutive patients with resected central lung cancer in the second department of thoracic surgery of Hunan Cancer Hospital between Apirl 2016 and July 2018 were retrospectively enrolled.Video-assisted tho-racoscopic tracheoplasty with sleeve resection and lobectomy were performed in 56 patients, video-assisted thoracoscopic tra-cheoplasty with wedge resection and lobectomy were performed in 20 patients, and 10 patients transit to thoracotomy.Surgical parameter of patients who underwent video-assisted thoracoscopic sleeve lobectomy were investigated to assess the learning curve, including operation duration, bleeding volume, amount of lymph nodes examined(medianstinal and intrapulmonary). Lowess smoothing method was performed to fit curve to evaluate the variation tendency of surgical parameters .Cut-off point, as well as the confidence interval, were identified using piecewise regression analysis.Results Surgical duration tend to be stable (almost 200 min) when the cumulative case amount of video-assisted thoracoscopic sleeve lobectomy reach 40.Surgical bleed-ing tend to be stable( almost 200 ml) when the cumulative case amount of video-assisted thoracoscopic sleeve lobectomy reach 20.There is no significant correlation between the amount of lymph node harvest and surgical volume .Conclusion The cut-off point for video-assisted thoracoscopic sleeve lobectomy is approximately 40 cases.

ABSTRACT

Objective To investigate the preliminary clinical efficacy of total hip arthroplasty (THA) patients with pelvic sagittal alignment pathology. Methods The clinical data of 120 THA patients who had normal pelvic sagittal alignment and 40 THA patients who had pathology between 2013 and 2016 were retrospectively studied. Complication rate and survival rate were collected and analyzed. Results Complete case records were documented in 160 cases who were followed up for an average 26 months (range, 2—45 months). For pelvic alignment parameters: the average pelvic incidence (PI) of normal group was similar to pathology group, and no significant difference was found in two groups:(46.32 ± 4.29)°vs. (45.15 ± 3.16)°, P>0.05. There were significant differences in pelvic tilt (PT) and sacral slope (SS) between two groups: (46.32 ± 4.29)°vs. (17.51 ± 2.31)°, (38.01 ± 1.92) vs. (27.64 ± 1.72)°, P<0.05. Two cases suffered from dislocation, half year successful rate was 99.2%, 1-year was 98.3% and 2-year was 98.3% in normal group. Four cases suffered from dislocation, half year successful rate was 95.0%, 1-year was 92.5% and 2-year was 90.0% in pathology group. Conclusions Prior lumbar-pelvic sagittal alignment pathology increases risk of complication in THA, which can obviously change hip biomechanical characteristic.

ABSTRACT

To investigate the effect of prophylactic aucubin (AU) on lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced acute lung injury (ALI) in mice. 
 Methods: Male BABL/c mice were randomly divided into a control group, an ALI group, and an AU treatment group, 16 mice in each group. ALI mice were injected with LPS (5 mg/kg, intratracheal injection), and AU (10 mg/kg) was injected intraperitoneally 30 min ahead. After LPS injection for 6 hours mice were sacrificed, the morphological changes of lung tissues were detected by HE staining and the lung injury score was obtained. The mRNA expression of tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) and interleukin 10 (IL-10) in lung tissue was detected by real-time PCR. The total protein and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) activity, the cell count, and the protein content of TNF-α and IL-10 in the mouse bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) were detected.
 Results: Compared with ALI mice, the pathological damage score of lung tissue was significantly reduced in the AU group, the total number of BALF cells, neutrophils, and macrophages were significantly decreased, LDH activity and the total protein content were also significantly decreased (all P<0.01). In addition, AU can reduce the mRNA and protein expression of TNF-α in lung of ALI mice, and increase the mRNA and protein expression of IL-10 (all P<0.01).
 Conclusion: AU can reduce LPS-induced ALI in mice.

ABSTRACT

Objective:To observe the efficacy of modified Simotang in treatment of adult functional constipation (Qi-stagnancy constipation), and investigate its effects on serum levels of intestinal neurotransmitter nitric oxide synthase (nNOS), nitric oxide (NO), and vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP), as well as superoxide dismutase (SOD), malonaldehyde (MDA), and glutathione (GSH) levels. Method:One hundred and ten patients with functional constipation were selected and randomly divided into control group (55 cases) and treatment group (55 cases) by referring to random number table. The patients in control group were given with routine therapy, Domperidone tablet (1 tablet/time, tid), and Phenolphthalein tablets (100 mg/time, bid). The patients in treatment group were treated with modified Simotang, 1 dose/day. Both groups were treated for 4 weeks. Then the scores of main clinical symptoms of functional constipation, scores of Qi-stagnancy constipation and clinical efficacy were compared between two groups. Constipation recurrence rate was compared between two groups after stopping medicine. Serum levels of intestinal neurotransmitters nNOS, NO and VIP as well as SOD, MDA, GSH levels were detected in both groups. Result:After treatment, scores for main clinical symptoms (difficult defecation, abdominal distension, defecation time, number of defecation times) and Bristol scores in treatment group were obviously lower than those in control group (PP PPPPConclusion:Based on routine therapy, modified Simotang in treatment of adult functional constipation (Qi-stagnancy constipation) can improve clinical symptoms and syndrome symptoms, increase the clinical efficacy, decrease recurrence rate, and regulate levels of intestinal neurotransmitters nNOS,NO and VIP as well as SOD, MDA, GSH levels.

OBJECTIVE@#The Jidong Women Health Cohort Study is a prospective cohort study on female-specific characteristics and risks of chronic diseases in Chinese women and focuses on the potential association between menopause and risks of cardiovascular disease (CVD).@*METHODS@#The study includes 4,179 female participants with an age of older than 18 years from Caofeidian district, Tangshan city, northern China. Baseline information on female-specific characteristics and potential cardiovascular risk factors was collected and all the participants underwent a physical examination with blood samples collected in 2013. To establish a better risk assessment tool of female CVD, updated information from questionnaire investigation, physical examinations and occurrence of outcome events will be collected through a longitudinal follow-up annually up to the year 2024.@*RESULTS@#At baseline, Mean age of the participants was 42.3 ± 12.8 years. Reproduction occurred in 2,948 participants (70.5%), menopausal transition in 173 (4.3%), and postmenopause in 1,058 (25.3%). The incidence of arterial hypertension, dyslipidemia, and diabetes showed significant difference across different groups stratified by Stage of Reproductive Aging Workshop (STRAW) system (P < 0.05).@*CONCLUSION@#The Jidong Women Health Cohort Study will contribute to the scientific evidence on association between female-specific characteristics and cardiovascular risks, and will also be helpful to provide a new path for early detection and prevention of CVD.

OBJECTIVE@#This study aimed to investigate the relationship between alkaline phosphatase (ALP) and common carotid intima media thickness (IMT), carotid plaque, and extracranial carotid artery stenosis (ECAS).@*METHODS@#A total of 3,237 participants aged ⪖ 40 years were recruited from Jidong community in 2013-2014. Participants were divided into five quintile groups based on their serum ALP levels. Carotid atherosclerosis was assessed using ultrasound. Abnormal IMT, carotid plaque, and ECAS were defined as IMT > 0.9 mm, IMT > 1.5 mm, and ⪖ 50% stenosis in at least one extracranial carotid artery, respectively.@*RESULTS@#Common carotid IMT values and the prevalence of carotid plaque increased across serum ALP quintiles. Higher ALP quintiles were correlated with an increased risk of abnormal IMT [fourth quintile: odds ratio (OR) 1.78, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.13-2.82, P = 0.0135; fifth quintile: OR = 1.82, 95% CI: 1.15-2.87, P = 0.0110] and ECAS compared to the lowest quintile (fifth quintile: OR = 1.47, 95% CI: 1.09-1.97, P = 0.0106). The association between ALP and prevalence of carotid plaque became insignificant after adjustment for confounders.@*CONCLUSION@#Serum ALP levels were independently associated with abnormal common carotid IMT and ECAS. These conclusions need to be further corroborated in future prospective cohort studies.
