ABSTRACT

Introduction: The bivalve Semimytilus patagonicus is a potentially useful bioindicator because of its feeding mechanism, and the worm Pseudonereis gallapagensis is also interesting as a bioindicator because it is benthonic, abundant, and a food source for the squid Doryteuthis gahi. However, their sensitivity to contaminants has not been sufficiently studied. Objective: To test the usefulness of the mussel Semimytilus patagonicus and the polychaete Pseudonereis gallapagensis as ecotoxicological tools for detergents in the marine environment. Methods: We used 120 individuals of S. patagonicus from Miraflores and 120 of P. gallapagensis from Barranco (both near the city of Lima, Peru). For the bioassays, we used two anionic detergents (active ingredient, ai, Sodium Dodecylbenzene Sulfonate). For S. patagonicus, with an average valve length of 32.3 ± 6.4 mm, we tested "Double power Ariel®" (90 %) at concentrations of 17.5, 35, 70 and 140 mg ai l-1, evaluated after 48 and 72 h of exposure; and for P. gallapagensis, with a total body length of 20.4 ± 8.8 mm, we tested "Caricia®" at 62.5, 125, 250, 500 and 1 000 mg of ai l-1 at 24, 48 and 72 h of exposure. Results: The LC50 values (Mean Lethal Concentration) were 34.95 mg ia l-1 for S. patagonicus and 102.48 mg ia l-1 for P. gallapagensis at 72 h of exposure. The detergents were toxic for S. patagonicus and slightly toxic for P. gallapagensis. The risk classification for S. patagonicus is "harmful" and for P. gallapagensis "not classifiable". Conclusions: These two bioindicators allow evaluating the acute toxicity of SDBS-based commercial detergents in the marine aquatic environment.


Introducción: El bivalvo Semimytilus patagonicus es un bioindicador potencialmente útil por su mecanismo de alimentación, y el gusano Pseudonereis gallapagensis también es interesante como bioindicador por ser bentónico, abundante y fuente de alimento para el calamar Doryteuthis gahi. Sin embargo, su sensibilidad a los contaminantes no ha sido suficientemente estudiada. Objetivo: Probar la utilidad del mejillón S. patagonicus y el poliqueto P. gallapagensis como herramientas ecotoxicológicas para detergentes en el medio marino. Métodos: Se utilizaron 120 individuos de S. patagonicus de Miraflores y 120 de P. gallapagensis de Barranco (ambos cerca de la ciudad de Lima, Perú). Para los bioensayos se utilizaron dos detergentes aniónicos (ingrediente activo, ia, dodecilbenceno sulfonato de sodio). Para S. patagonicus, con una longitud valver promedio de 32.3 ± 6.4 mm, probamos Ariel Doble Poder® (90 %) a concentraciones de 17.5, 35, 70 y 140 mg·ia·l-1, evaluadas a las 48 y 72 h de exposición; y para P. gallapagensis, con una longitud corporal total de 20.4 ± 8.8 mm, probamos Caricia® a 62.5, 125, 250, 500 y 1 000 mg·ia·l-1 a las 24, 48 y 72 h de exposición. Resultados: Los valores de CL50 (Concentración Letal Media) fueron de 34.95 mg·ia·l-1 para S. patagonicus y 102.48 mg·ia·l-1 para P. gallapagensis a las 72 h de exposición. Los detergentes fueron tóxicos para S. patagonicus y levemente tóxicos para P. gallapagensis. La clasificación de riesgo para S. patagonicus es "nocivo" y para P. gallapagensis "no clasificable". Conclusiones: Estos dos bioindicadores permiten evaluar la toxicidad aguda del detergente comercial a base de SDBS en el ambiente acuático marino.

ABSTRACT

Abstract: Polychaetes are common in coastal and estuarine environments worldwide and constitute one of the most complex groups of marine invertebrates. The morpho-physiology of the female reproductive system (FRS) can be understood by using histological tools to describe reproductive cycle and gametogenesis paths and, among other purposes, aiming to identify and differentiate polychaete species. However, this histology-based approach is rarely combined with molecular tools, which is known to accurately delimitate species. In the same way, the description and understanding of oogenesis and vitellogenesis paths within polychaetes are lacking for most families, narrowing the range of its utility. Therefore, the present study aims to describe the oogenesis in three polychaete species common and abundant on the South American Atlantic coast (Laeonereis culveri, Scolelepis goodbodyi and Capitella biota) and investigate the utility of reproductive features and gametogenesis as a relevant associate knowledge to discriminate species, particularly useful for putative cryptic species, integrated with morphological and molecular data. In a first attempt, the results obtained herein allow the authors to describe two new subtypes of oogenesis, dividing it in extraovarian oogenesis type I and II and intraovarian type I and II. The results also demonstrate that the following histological characters of the FRS can be relevant for the separation of related species: a) oogenesis type, b) occurrence or absence of a true ovary, c) ovary tissue organization, d) type of accessory cells present, and e) oocyte morphology. Additionally, these histological features of FRS, when compared with correlated species studied under this scope, converge with the genetic data. The analysis of cytochrome oxidase I (COI) barcode sequences differentiates between North and South American Atlantic populations of L. culveri (16.78% genetic distance), while in S. goodbodyi and C. biota it discriminates them from their congeneric species. These results highlight the importance of multi-tool approach and shows that both FRS histology and histo-physiology, and DNA barcoding can be used to identify and discriminate cryptic species, which is usually not possible when using morphological characters. Besides, these characters may also be useful in differentiating related species, and/or geographically distinct populations among polychaetes.


Resumo: Os poliquetas são comuns em ambientes costeiros e estuarinos em todo o mundo e constituem um dos grupos mais complexos de invertebrados marinhos. A morfo-fisiologia do sistema reprodutor feminino (FRS) pode ser compreendida por meio de ferramentas histológicas para identificar e diferenciar estes anelídeos. No entanto, essa abordagem histológica raramente é combinada com ferramentas moleculares, amplamente conhecidas por delimitar espécies congenéricas ou crípticas com maior precisão. Do mesmo modo, a descrição e o entendimento da oogênese e vitelogênese dentre os poliquetas, para a maioria das famílias, é ainda limitado. Portanto, o presente estudo tem como objetivo descrever a oogênese em três espécies de poliquetas comuns e abundantes na costa sul-americana (Laeonereis culveri, Scolelepis goodbodyi e Capitella biota) e investigar a utilidade das características reprodutivas e da gametogênese como um conhecimento associado relevante para discriminar espécies, particularmente útil para espécies crípticas putativas, integradas a dados morfológicos e moleculares. Os resultados aqui obtidos permitiram descrever dois novos subtipos de oogênese, dividindo-a em oogênese extra-ovariana dos tipos I e II e intra-ovariana dos tipos I e II. Os resultados também demonstram que os seguintes caracteres histológicos do FRS podem ser relevantes para a separação de espécies relacionadas: a) tipo de oogênese, b) presença ou ausência de um ovário verdadeiro, c) organização tissular ovariana, d) tipo de células acessórias presentes e, e) morfologia do ovócito. Além disso, essas características histológicas do FRS, quando comparadas às espécies correlatas estudadas sob esse escopo, convergem com os dados genéticos separando espécies putativas e congenéricas. As análises com DNA barcode demonstraram que em L. culveri é possível diferenciar as populações atlânticas Norte e Sul-americanas (16,78% de distância genética), enquanto para S. goodbodyi e C. biota fica evidente sua distinção com espécies congenéricas. Esses resultados destacam a importância da abordagem com múltiplas ferramentas e mostram que tanto a histologia quanto a histo-fisiologia do FRS e o DNA barcode podem ser usados para identificar e discriminar espécies crípticas e potencialmente crípticas, o que geralmente não é possível quando se utilizam apenas caracteres morfológicos. Além disso, esses caracteres também podem ser úteis na diferenciação de espécies relacionadas e / ou populações geograficamente distintas desses poliquetas.

ABSTRACT

Introducción: Diversos estudios han demostrado el efecto del Cd sobre la mortalidad y otras respuestas fisiológicas de diversas especies de poliquetos. Objetivo: Evaluar el efecto tóxico del Cd en la mortalidad de adultos de Polydora sp. como especie prueba para estudios ecotoxicológicos. Métodos: Los especímenes fueron recolectados en el humedal costero Poza de la Arenilla, Callao, Peru. Los organismos fueron aclimatados durante dos semanas con agua de mar y sedimento y posteriormente, tres días en agua de mar, con 30 ‰ de salinidad y temperatura entre 20 a 22 °C. Los organismos se expusieron a las concentraciones nominales 75, 11.25, 1.69, 0.25; 0.04 mg/L de Cd y un control. Se analizaron tres réplicas de diez individuos por tratamiento durante 72 horas para registrar mortalidad. Se aplicaron las pruebas de Kruskal-Wallis y de U-Man Whitney para detectar las diferencias significativas entre tratamientos. Resultados: El efecto adverso del Cd sobre la mortalidad fue mucho más evidente en los tratamientos de 11.25 y 75 mg/L a partir de las primeras 24 horas de exposición. La concentración letal media de Cd a 72h fue de 2.59 mg/L. Conclusiones: La CL50 está en el mismo orden de magnitud de otras especies de poliquetos. Este es el primer estudio ecotoxicológico en Perú con poliquetos en condiciones de laboratorio. Se sugiere la utilización de Polydora sp. como especie prueba en experimentos de ecotoxicología, utilizando concentraciones nominales subletales de Cd que no superen los 1.6 mg/L para la observación de varias respuestas fisiológicas.


Introduction: Several studies have demonstrated the effect of Cd on mortality and other physiological responses of some polychaete species. Objective: To evaluate the toxic effect of Cd on adults mortality of Polydora sp as a test species for ecotoxicological studies. Methods: The specimens were collected in the coastal wetland of Poza de la Arenilla, Callao, Peru. The organisms were acclimatized for two weeks with seawater and sediment and then, three days in seawater, with 30 ‰ of salinity and temperature between 20 to 22 °C. The organisms were exposed to the nominal concentrations 75, 11.25, 1.69, 0.25; 0.04 mg/L of Cd and a control. Three replicates of ten individuals per treatment were analyzed for 72 hours to register mortality. The Kruskal-Wallis and U-Man Whitney tests were applied to detect significant differences among treatments. Results: The adverse effect of Cd on mortality was much more evident in the treatments of 11.25 and 75 mg/L after the first 24 hours of exposure. The mean lethal concentration of Cd at 72h was 2.59 mg/L. Conclusions: The LC50 is in the same order of magnitude as other polychaete species. This is the first ecotoxicological study in Peru using polychaetes under laboratory conditions. It is suggested the use of Polydora sp as a test species in ecotoxicology experiments, using nominal sublethal concentrations of Cd not exceeding 1.6 mg/L. for the observation of several physiological responses.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: The polychaete fauna inhabiting Chinchorro Bank has been poorly studied and only 35 species have been previously reported. Objective: To examine the taxonomic composition of the Eunicida and Amphinomida associated to dead coral substrates from this coral reef atoll, a Biosphere Reserve located in the southern Mexican Caribbean. Methods: In April 2008, dead coral fragments of the genus Porites were manually collected by SCUBA diving at eight stations between 4-16.2 m depth. Results: A total of 714 individuals belonging to 17 genera and 48 species of the families Amphinomidae, Dorvilleidae, Eunicidae, Lumbrineridae, Oenonidae and Onuphidae were identified. Eunicidae was clearly the more diverse (29 species; 60.4 %) and abundant family (479 individuals; 67.1 %), while the Oenonidae and Onuphidae were represented by only one individual-species each. Thirty-eight species (79.2 %) were new records for Chinchorro Bank, of which 23 species (47.9 %) were newly reported for the Western Caribbean ecoregion. Conclusions: The polychaete fauna recorded showed that the Chinchorro Bank reef is a species-rich habitat that deserves further study; the 48 species from six families identified were similar or even greater than the number of species reported from dead coral environments of other Caribbean Sea regions.


Introducción: La fauna de poliquetos que habita en el Banco Chinchorro ha sido poco estudiada y solo se han registrado alrededor de 35 especies. Objetivo: Examinar la composición taxonómica de los Amphinomida y Eunicida asociados a sustratos de coral muerto en este atolón coralino, una Reserva de la Biosfera ubicada al sur del Caribe mexicano. Métodos: En abril de 2008 se recolectaron manualmente fragmentos de coral muerto por medio de buceo SCUBA en ocho estaciones entre 4-16.2 m de profundidad. Resultados: Se identificaron 714 individuos pertenecientes a 17 géneros y 48 especies de las familias Amphinomidae, Dorvilleidae, Eunicidae, Lumbrineridae, Oenonidae y Onuphidae. Eunicidae fue claramente la familia más diversa (29 especies, 60.4 %) y abundante (479 individuos, 67.1 %); en cambio Oenonidae y Onuphidae estuvieron representadas por solo un individuo de una especie. Treinta y ocho especies (79.2 %) fueron nuevos registros para el Banco Chinchorro, de las cuales 23 especies (47.9 %) fueron registradas por primera vez en la ecorregión del Caribe Occidental. Conclusiones: La fauna de poliquetos registrada mostró que el arrecife del Banco Chinchorro es un hábitat rico en especies que merece estudios adicionales; las 48 especies de seis familias identificadas fueron similares o incluso superiores al número de especies registradas en ambientes de coral muerto de otras regiones del Mar Caribe.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: The shelf-break frontal area in the Argentine Sea, between 37シ S and 40シ S, is characterized by high frequency and abundance of the parchment worm Chaetopterus antarcticus Kinberg, 1866 associated to Zygochlamys patagonica scallop beds. This polychaete was usually collected within its U tubes, typical of infaunal habit. During 2007, a surprising massive settlement of worms on scallops was observed. Objective: Our objectives is to report the variability of life habits of C. antarcticus in scallop grounds distributed between 37º S and 40º S in Argentinean waters. Methods: The presence of the parchment tube worms on Z. patagonica was analyzed in 892 scallops coming from three samples collected in September (previously obtained for other purposes) and November 2007 and April 2008, between 99-106 m depth in Management Unit B (16.186 km2, 38º S - 39º 52' S). Polychaetes were identified and quantified on both valves. In addition, both epibiont and infaunal worms were registered through time. The settlement of C. antarcticus on scallops was monitored during the period 2007-2015 and the presence of free tubes, both empty and inhabited by worms, were registered during the period 2008-2015 from a total of 374 representative subsamples (10 l) collected with trawling tools between 37º S and 40º S. Results: Scallops collected in 2007 and 2008 showed that 468 (> 50 %) specimens were encrusted; in 66 % (311 specimens) of them C. antarcticus was settled. The temporal analysis showed that the spatial distribution of epibiotic worms decreased in 2009, 2010 and 2012, with its total absence in 2013, 2014 and 2015 in the study area. During the period 2007 - 2015, infaunal worms were registered throughout the area, collected in part of the locations monitored. Conclusions: The variability of life habits of C. antarcticus was not commonly registered previously in the study area; epibiotic behavior could be the result of intensive soft sediment disturbance due to trawling and hence, the selection of other available primary settlement substrate.


Introducción: El área del frente de talud en el Mar Argentino, entre 37° S y 40° S, se caracteriza por alta frecuencia y abundancia del poliqueto Chaetopterus antarcticus Kinberg, 1866 asociado a bancos de vieira Zygochlamys patagonica (King, 1832). Este poliqueto era colectado usualmente habitando los tubos en U, típicos de hábito infaunal. Durante 2007, un sorprendente asentamiento masivo de gusanos sobre vieiras fue observado. Objetivos: Los objetivos del trabajo son reportar la variabilidad del hábito de vida de C. antarcticus en fondos de vieiras entre 37° S y 40° S en aguas de Argentina. Métodos: La presencia de gusanos tubícolas sobre Z. patagonica se analizó en 892 vieiras colectadas en tres muestras durante Septiembre (muestra tomada con otros propósitos) y Noviembre 2007 y Abril 2008, entre 99-106 m de profundidad en la Unidad de Manejo B (16.186 km2, 38º S - 39º 52' S). Los poliquetos fueron identificados y cuantificados en ambas valvas. Además, los gusanos tanto epibiontes como infaunales se registraron en un período de tiempo. El asentamiento de C. antarcticus sobre vieiras se monitoreó durante 2007-2015 y la presencia de tubos libres, tanto vacíos como habitados por gusanos, durante 2008-2015 a partir de 374 submuestras representativas (10 l) colectadas con artes de arrastre entre 37° S y 40° S. Resultados: Las vieiras colectadas en 2007 y 2008 mostraron que 468 (> 50 %) especímenes estaban incrustados; C. antarcticus estaba asentado en 66 % (311 especímenes) de los mismos. El análisis temporal mostró que la distribución espacial de gusanos epibiontes decreció en 2009, 20101 y 2012, y su ausencia total en 2013, 2014 y 2015 en el área de estudio. Durante el período 2007 - 2015 los gusanos infaunales se registraron en toda el área, en parte de las localidades relevadas. Conclusiones: La variabilidad del hábito de vida de C. antarcticus no había sido registrada previamente en el área de estudio; el comportamiento epibiótico podría ser el resultado del disturbio intensivo de los sedimentos blandos debido al arrastre y en consecuencia, la selección de otro sustrato de asentamiento primario disponible.

ABSTRACT

Introducción: El poliqueto marino y estuarino Capitella capitata es una especie endobentónica y considerado cosmopolita. El cultivo en el laboratorio de este complejo de especies permite su utilización como especie para pruebas en bioensayos de toxicidad, así como para estudios de reproducción. Objetivo: El presente trabajo pretende observar la mortalidad en dos rangos de temperatura y salinidad como condiciones óptimas para cultivar Capitella sp. en el laboratorio. Metodología: La recolección de especímenes se realizó en la provincia de Callao, Perú en noviembre de 2016 y enero de 2017. Se realizó un bioensayo para observar la mortalidad bajo diferentes intervalos de temperatura y salinidad: tratamiento 1 con los organismos recolectados en enero y con intervalos de temperatura (20-22° C) y salinidad (30-32 ups) similares a los registrados en el campo; tratamiento 2, con los organismos recolectados en noviembre y con intervalos de temperatura (24-26 °C) y salinidad (32 a 34 ups) seleccionados de acuerdo con datos de la bibliografía. Resultados: El aumento de la temperatura y el tiempo influyeron significativamente en la mortalidad de los organismos de ambos tratamientos (Correlación de Spearman), mientras que la salinidad y el oxígeno no presentaron correlación significativa con la mortalidad. Se observó efecto significativo del tiempo en la mortalidad, con más muertes a partir de la segunda mitad del experimento. Los organismos del tratamiento 1, con condiciones ambientales similares a las de su hábitat sobrevivieron más que los del tratamiento 2. Estos resultados también se observaron en la variabilidad porcentual en el coeficiente de variación entre los días por tratamiento. No se observaron diferencias entre los tratamientos al comparar las curvas acumuladas de mortalidad. Conclusión: Los intervalos óptimos para el cultivo en el laboratorio de Capitella sp. son los de su hábitat. Las posibles causas de la mortalidad observada se atribuyen, además de la temperatura y el tiempo, a la edad, estado de salud o de madurez de los organismos y, probablemente, la mala calidad del agua utilizada en el bioensayo.


Introduction: The marine-estuarine polychaete Capitella capitata is an endobenthic species which is considered as a cosmopolitan organism. The laboratory culture of this species-complex allows its use as a test species in toxicity bioassays and reproduction studies. Objective: It is pretended to observe mortality under two temperature and salinity ranges as optimal conditions to culture Capitella sp. in the laboratory. Metodology: Polychaetes were collected in Callao Province, Peru, during November 2016 and January 2017. A bioassay was carried out to observe mortality under different temperature and salinity ranges using two treatments: treatment 1, with polychaetes collected during January 2017, which were subjected to conditions similar to the collection site (temperature: 20-22° C, salinity: 30-32 psu); treatment 2, with the organisms collected during November 2016, with temperature (24-26 °C) and salinity (32 a 34 ups) selected according to bibliographic data. Results: The increase of temperature and time significantly influenced polychaete mortality of the two treatments (Spearman correlation), while salinity and dissolved oxygen did not show correlation with mortality. Significant effect of time was observed on mortality, with more deaths from the second half of the experiment. Organisms from treatment 1, with environmental conditions similar to those of their habitat survived more than worms from treatment 2. These results were also observed in the porcentual varibility of the variation coefficient among days in each treatment. The cumulative mortality curve did not show differences between treatments. Conclusion: The optimal ranges to culture Capitella sp. in the laboratory are those from their habitat. In addition to temperature and time, other posible causes of the observed mortality can be worms age, health or maturity, and probably the bad quality of the water used during the bioassay.

Introduction: The knowledge of polychaetes from Oaxaca, Mexico, is represented by 41 families and 241 species, nevertheless, 148 species are considered questionable. The majority of taxonomic studies of polychaetes in Oaxaca have taken placed on estuarine zones or commercial ports, sidelining other marine ecosystems. Objective: To identify the polychaeta-fauna from three different marine ecosystems in Oaxaca, Mexico. Methods: Specimens analyzed came from the Sección de poliquetos de la Colección Científica at the Laboratorio de Sistemática de Invertebrados Marinos, Universidad del Mar. The material deposited in the collection was collected between 2007-2017; additionally, new collect were realized in 2017. For each locality, the family and species richness were estimated using the accumulation function of linear dependence model. Results: One hundred lots and 273 specimens were revised. Seventy-one taxa, belonging to 47 genera and 21 families were identified, only twenty of these taxa are confirmed species (28 %). Chacahua Lagoon had the highest richness and relative abundance with 37 taxa and 149 specimens, Agua Blanca was identified 21 taxa and 92 specimens, and from San Agustín 19 taxa and 32 specimens. Sabellariidae had the highest relative abundance (58 specimens), while Phyllodocidae presented the highest species richness (12 species). Conclusions: This study adds 75 new records of taxa of polychaetes to the coast Oaxaca, which increase the knowledge in this animal group, now represented by 304 species, belonging to 154 genera and 42 families.


Introducción: El conocimiento de poliquetos en Oaxaca, México, está representado por 41 familias y 241 especies, sin embargo, 148 especies son consideradas cuestionables. La mayoría de los estudios taxonómicos de poliquetos en Oaxaca se han enfocado en zonas estuarinas o puertos comerciales, dejando de lado otros ecosistemas marinos. Objetivo: Identificar la poliqueto-fauna de tres ecosistemas diferentes de Oaxaca. Métodos: Los especímenes analizados pertenecen a la Sección de poliquetos de la Colección Científica del Laboratorio de Sistemática de Invertebrados Marinos, Universidad del Mar. El material depositado en la colección fue colectado entre 2007-2017; adicionalmente, se realizaron nuevas colectas en 2017. Para cada localidad, la riqueza de especies y familias fue estimada utilizando la función de acumulación del modelo de dependencia lineal. Resultados: Se revisaron 100 lotes y 273 especímenes. Se identificaron 71 taxones, pertenecientes a 47 géneros y 21 familias, solo 20 de estos taxones corresponden a nombres específicos (28 %). La Laguna de Chacahua presentó la mayor riqueza y abundancia relativa con 37 taxones y 149 especímenes, en Agua Blanca se identificaron 21 taxones y 92 especímenes, y para San Agustín 19 taxones y 32 especímenes. La familia Sabellariidae tuvo la mayor abundancia relativa (58 especímenes), mientras que Phyllodocidae presentó la mayor riqueza de especies (12 especies). Conclusiones: Con este estudio se añaden 75 nuevos registros de poliquetos para la costa de Oaxaca, incrementando el conocimiento de este grupo, ahora representado por 304 especies pertenecientes a 154 géneros y 42 familias.

Introduction: The taxonomy of Cirratulidae is not easy due to the diagnostic characters currently accepted change through ontogeny, in some cases, there are even difficulties to separate juveniles from adults. Among the Cirratulus species cited, described and considered as valid for Argentina are Cirratulus jucundus (Kinberg, 1866), Cirratulus patagonicus (Kinberg, 1866) and Cirratulus mianzanii Saracho Bottero, Elías & Magalhães, 2017. Objetive: This study made a revision of Cirratulus includes material deposited in the Museo de Ciencias Naturales de La Plata (MLP) and specimens collected privately by J.M. Orensanz that was donated to the laboratory of Bioindicadores Bentónicos of the National University of Mar del Plata. Methods: The specimens were examined with optical equipment (microscope and stereomicroscope) and also by a scanning electron microscope (SEM). Results: A complete examination of the material, revealed a higher number of species than those already mentioned. In the present work, three new species are described from the intertidal and subtidal areas of the Argentine continental shelf: Cirratulus orensanzii n. sp.; Cirratulus knipovichana n. sp. and Cirratulus alfonsinae n. sp. Conclusions: The knowledge about the taxonomy of the family as well as the updating of the geographic registries contributes to the biodiversity of the region, which is of great importance to carry out both ecological studies and conservation plans.


Introducción: La taxonomía de Cirratulidae no es fácil debido a que los caracteres diagnósticos actualmente aceptados cambian a través de la ontogenia; en algunos casos, incluso existen dificultades para separar a los juveniles de los adultos. Entre las especies de Cirratulus citadas, descritas y consideradas como válidas para Argentina se encuentran Cirratulus jucundus (Kinberg, 1866), Cirratulus patagonicus (Kinberg, 1866) y Cirratulus mianzanii Saracho Bottero, Elias & Magalhães, 2017. Objetivo: El presente estudio hace una revisión de Cirratulus que incluye material depositado en el Museo de Ciencias Naturales de La Plata (MLP) y especímenes recolectados en privado por JM Orensanz que fue donado al laboratorio de Bioindicadores Bentónicos de la Universidad Nacional de Mar del Plata. Métodos: Las muestras se examinaron con equipo óptico (microscopio y estereomicroscopio) y también con microscopio electrónico de barrido (SEM). Resultados: Un examen completo del material, reveló un mayor número de especies que las ya mencionadas. En el presente trabajo, se describen tres nuevas especies de las áreas intermareales y submareales de la plataforma continental argentina: Cirratulus orensanzii n. sp.; Cirratulus knipovichana n. sp. y Cirratulus alfonsinae n. sp. Conclusiones: El conocimiento sobre la taxonomía de la familia, así como la actualización de los registros geográficos, contribuye a la biodiversidad de la región, lo cual es de gran importancia para llevar a cabo estudios ecológicos y planes de conservación.

Introduction: The knowledge of polychaetes in the subtropical region of Africa benefited from the activity of J. Day. However, 50 years after the publication of his Monograph of the Polychaeta of southern Africa, it is necessary to reconsider the identity of the Cirratulidae due to changes in the diagnostic characters and new approaches to the taxonomy of the group to corroborate the status of cosmopolitan species in this region. Objective: We hypothesize that biodiversity of multitentacular Cirratulidae polychaetes has been significantly underestimated in southern Africa. Methods: The present work analyzes material deposited in the Iziko museum, as well as recently collected specimens, using scanning electron microscope to identify them. Results: The material corresponds to two new species belonging to the genus Protocirrineris. Protocirrineris strandloperarum sp. nov. is characterized by having the tentacular filaments between the chaetigers 5 to 10-12 and the first pair of branchiae from chaetiger 7, and P. magalhaesi sp. nov. is characterized by having tentacular filaments between chaetigers 4-8 and the first pair of branchiae from chaetigers 2 or 3. Descriptions of these species, with light and scanning electron microscope images, are given. Schematic drawings of the two new species are shown comparatively with diagnostic characters. Conclusions: The use of new techniques enables discovery of new taxonomic characters and two new species of the genus. The diversity of Cirratulidae polychaetes is underestimated also in the subtropical and tropical regions of Africa.


Introducción: El conocimiento de los poliquetos de la región subtropical de África fue logrado gracias a John Day. Sin embargo, 50 años después es necesario reconsiderar la identidad de los Cirratulidae, debido a los cambios en los caracteres diagnósticos y a las nuevas herramientas de análisis. Objetivo: Nuestra hipótesis es que la biodiversidad de los poliquetos cirratulidos multitentaculares ha sido subestimada significativamente en el sur de África. Métodos: El trabajo actual analiza muestras tomadas recientemente y material depositado en el museo de Iziko con microscopia electrónica de barrido para su identificación. Resultados: El material corresponde a dos especies nuevas, Protocirrineris strandloperarum sp. nov. y Protocirrineris magalhaesi sp. nov. Una imagen esquemática con los caracteres diagnósticos es dada para las especies descriptas en este trabajo. Conclusiones: el uso de nuevas técnicas permitió descubrir nuevos caracteres diagnósticos y dos nuevas especies del género. La diversidad de Cirratulidae también está subestimada en la región subtropical y tropical de África.

Introduction: Brazil has more than 8 000 km of coastline but its marine invertebrates are still poorly known. The cirratulid polychaetes have been an especially neglected group because of its challenging taxonomy. Objective: To describe a new species of Protocirrineris. Methods: In a recent survey in two of the largest Brazilian bays, Todos os Santos Bay and Camamu Bay, 84 specimens of four morphotypes of the multitentaculate genus Protocirrineris were collected. Because of the lack of modified chaetae, the taxonomy of Protocirrineris is challenging and only two of these morphotypes are herein described as new species. Results: These two new species are characterized by having tentacular filaments in two groups over chaetigers 3-4 and first branchiae present from chaetiger 1. They differ from each other in relation to the nature of the achaetigerous region, posterior region, ultrastructure of capillary chaetae and methyl green staining pattern. Two incomplete specimens are also considered as Protocirrineris, and brief descriptions are given. Conclusions: The genus Protocirrineris is cited for the first time in Brazil. Four new morphotypes were found in two large estuaries of Brazil, and two new species are formally described.


Introducción: Brasil tiene más de 8000 km de costa, pero sus invertebrados marinos aún son poco conocidos. Los poliquetos cirratulidos han sido un grupo especialmente descuidado debido a su desafiante taxonomía. Objetivos: Identificar morfotipos de Cirratulidae multitentaculados y encontrar nuevos caracteres diagnósticos. Métodos: En muestreo reciente en dos de las bahías más grandes de Brasil, Bahía de Todos los Santos y Bahía de Camamu, se colectaron cuatro morfotipos del género multitentaculado Protocirrineris. Resultados: Debido a la falta de quetas modificada, la taxonomía de Protocirrineris es un desafío y solo dos de estos morfotipos se describen aquí como nuevas especies. Estas dos nuevas especies se caracterizan por tener filamentos tentaculares en dos grupos sobre los quetígeros 3-4 y las primeras branquias presentes de quetígero 1. Se diferencian entre sí en relación con la naturaleza de la región sin quetas, región posterior, ultraestructura de las quetas capilares y el patrón de tinción con verde de metilo. Dos especímenes incompletos también se consideran Protocirrineris, y se dan breves descripciones. Conclusiones: Se cita por primera vez la presencia del género Protocirrineris en Brasil. Cuatro morfotipos del género han sido encontrados en dos grandes estuarios de Brasil. Dos especies nuevas para la ciencia son descriptas.

@#The incidence of neurodegenerative diseases is directly proportional to age. The prevalence of non-communicable diseases, for example, Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s, is expected to rise in the coming years. Understanding the etiopathology of these diseases is a crucial step that needs to be taken to develop drugs for their treatment. Animal models are being increasingly used to expand the knowledge and understanding on neurodegenerative diseases. Marine worms, known as polychaetes (phylum Annelida), which are abundantly and frequently found in benthic environments, possess a simple yet complete nervous system (including a true brain that is centralised and specialised) compared to other annelids. Hence, polychaetes can potentially be the next candidate for a nerve disease model. The ability to activate the entire nervous system regeneration (NSR) is among the remarkable features of many polychaetes species. However, the information on NSR in polychaetes and how it can potentially model neurodegenerative diseases in humans is still lacking. By exploring such studies, we may eventually be able to circumvent the developmental constraints that limit NSR in the human nervous system. This article is intended to briefly review responsible mechanisms and signalling pathways of NSR in marine polychaetes and to make a comparison with other established models of neurodegenerative disease.

Abstract Human pressures have placed many tropical estuaries in developing countries under increased levels of stress. The Caroni Swamp Ramsar Site, the largest mangrove swamp along the west coast of Trinidad, has been subjected to high levels of anthropogenic impacts including hydrological alteration and pollution from land-based sources since the 1920's. While most of these impacts have been well documented, limited information exists on the macrobenthic communities in the swamp. This study addresses the paucity of information. The macrobenthic fauna in the main waterways of Caroni Swamp was sampled at 12 locations using a Van Veen 0.025 m2 grab, once in the dry (April) and wet (August) season of 2015 with a total of 144 samples. The samples were sorted, counted and species were identified to the lowest possible taxonomic level. A total of 55 taxa were identified with polychaetes being the most abundant taxa. The ecological status of the macrobenthos was assessed using AZTI's Marine Biotic Index (AMBI) and the multivariate-AMBI (M-AMBI). Physicochemical parameters were measured with a YSI multiparameter metre. Chemical analyses were also conducted on nitrates, nitrites, ammonia and reactive phosphates using standard methods. Overall, AMBI characterised the Caroni Swamp as "slightly disturbed" with a macrobenthic community of "poor" ecological status according to M-AMBI. Generally, the quality of the environment improves from the dry season to the wet season. However, seasonal variations in AMBI and M-AMBI were found to be site specific as some showed improvement in ecological status and macrozoobenthos quality while others showed degradation from the dry season to the wet season. The stations to the North of the swamp showed improvement from the dry season to the wet season while the opposite was observed in the more Southern stations. One notable characteristic of the swamp was the high levels of pollutants, particularly ammonia, recorded in one of its major waterways, the Caroni River. This is in contrast to the other waterways within the swamp which experience much lower levels of pollutant input from land-based sources. The assessment of the Caroni Swamp using AMBI and M-AMBI may be useful for informing management strategies to conserve the wetland and improve environmental quality. Rev. Biol. Resumen Los estuarios tropicales de países en desarrollo han experimentado un aumento en los niveles de estrés debido a la presión humana. El sitio Ramsar pantano Caroní, el manglar más grande de la costa oeste de Trinidad, ha estado sujeto a altos niveles de impacto antropogénico, incluyendo alteraciones hidrológicas y contaminación de fuentes terrestres desde la década de 1920. Aunque la mayoría de estos impactos han sido bien documentados, existe información limitada sobre las comunidades macrobentónicas en el pantano. Este estudio aborda esta escasez de información. Se muestreó la fauna macrobentónica en el canal principal del pantano Caroní en 12 localidades utilizando una draga Van Veen de 0.025 m2, una vez durante la época seca (Abril) y la época lluviosa (Agosto) 2015, con un total de 144 muestras. Las muestras fueron ordenadas, contadas y las especies se identificaron al menor nivel taxonómico posible. Se identificaron un total de 55 taxa, siendo los poliquetos el taxa más abundante. El estatus ecológico del macrobentos se evaluó utilizando el Índice Marino Biótico de AZTI (AMBI) y el AMBI-multivariado (M-AMBI). Los parámetros fisicoquímicos se midieron con un multiparámetro YSI. Los análisis químicos también se realizaron para nitratos, nitritos, amonio y fostatos activos utilizando métodos estándar. En conjunto, el índice AMBI caracterizó el pantano Caroní como "levemente alterado" con una comunidad macrobentónica de categoría "pobre" de acuerdo al M-AMBI. Generalmente, la calidad de los ambientes incrementa desde la época seca hasta la época lluviosa. Sin embargo, las variaciones estacionales en los índices AMBI y M-AMBI fueron específicas a la localidad, mostrando algunas un incremento en el estatus ecológico y calidad del macrozoobentos, mientras que otros mostraron una degradación de la época seca a la época lluviosa. Las estaciones al norte del pantano mostraron una mejora de la época seca a la época lluviosa, mientras que se presentó lo contrario en las estaciones más al sur. Una característica notable del pantano fueron los altos niveles de contaminantes, particularmente amonio, registrado en uno de los canales principales del río Caroní. Esto contrasta con los otros canales del pantano que experimentan niveles menores de aporte de contaminantes de fuentes terrestres. La evaluación del pantano Caroní utilizando los índíces AMBI y M-AMBI puede ser una base útil de información para las estrategias de manejo y conservación del humedal y mejorar su calidad ambiental.

ABSTRACT

Abstract A total of 298 species of polychaetes have been recorded from Colombia. However, only the family Protodrilidae has been reported from the marine interstitial realm. We here aim at identifying the interstitial annelids inhabiting the sandy beaches in Santa Marta region to the most accurate taxonomic level based on light microscopy examinations. Our samples, collected from the intertidal zone at three touristic beaches in the department of Magdalena (Santa Marta Bay, Rodadero Bay, and Taganga Bay), yielded a total of 83 specimens, which we assigned to five families, ten genera and nine species. From those, two families, eight genera, and the species Hesionides gohari, Neogyptis mediterranea, Neopetitia amphophthalma, Westheidesyllis gesae, and Syllis beneliahuae represent new records for the Colombian fauna. This survey should be considered as a first step towards a complete knowledge of the Colombian diversity of interstitial annelids, and our results significantly contribute to fill the gap of our current knowledge, suggesting a high diversity of species comparable to this in better-known areas of the Caribbean and the Atlantic coasts of Brazil. A brief diagnosis, comments on distribution and ecology, and remarks are provided for each record, in order to facilitate the re-identification of the species. Rev. Biol. Trop. 66(2): 658-673. Resumen Un total de 298 especies de poliquetos han sido registradas para Colombia. Sin embargo, solo la familia Protodrilidae ha sido reportada para el medio marino intersticial. El objetivo de este estudio fue identificar los anélidos intersticiales que habitan en playas arenosas de la región de Santa Marta hasta la categoría taxonómica más precisa, basados en observaciones al microscopio de luz. Las muestras fueron recolectadas en la zona intermareal de tres playas turísticas en el departamento del Magdalena (La bahía de Santa Marta, bahía de Rodadero y bahía de Taganga), resultando un total de 83 especímenes, los cuales fueron asignados a cinco familias, diez géneros y nueve especies. De estos, dos familias, ocho géneros y las especies Hesionides gohari, Neogyptis mediterranea, Neopetitia amphothalma, Westheidesyllis gesae y Syllis beneliahuae representan nuevos registros para la fauna de Colombia. Este trabajo debería ser considerado como el primer paso hacia el conocimiento de la diversidad de anélidos intersticiales en Colombia y los resultados contribuyen significativamente a llenar el vacío de información en el tema, sugiriendo una alta diversidad de especies comparable con la de áreas mejor conocidas del Caribe y de la costa atlántica de Brasil. En este trabajo se provee una breve diagnosis, comentarios sobre la distribución y ecología, y anotaciones para cada registro, con el propósito de facilitar la re-identificación de las especies.

ABSTRACT

An investigative study was conducted during September 2017 along the eastern Red Sea coasts (Jeddah, Saudi Arabia). During this study, 5 stations were prospected and samples of sediment were especially collected in order to study their meiobenthic organisms. Results showed important variations of the environmental factors between stations mainly for salinity measurements that were clearly higher at Shuaiba lagoon (47.70 psu). Meiofauna densities ranged from 218.50 to 485.25 ind.10 cm-2. Nematodes, Polychaeta, Foraminifera and Ostracoda were the most abundant among the 14 taxa registered. The highest densities of meiofauna were related to high levels of organic matter in Al Saif bay station while the lowest were observed in Shuaiba lagoon station with muddy sediments, low dissolved oxygen and high salinity. Statistical analyses showed that dissolved oxygen rate had a positive effect on Polychaeta, Turbellaria, Gastrotricha and Tardigrada whereas Arachnida, Mollusca and Brachiopoda were respectively affected by organic matter and salinity.

Abstract:The polychaete fauna of the Caribbean coast of Costa Rica has been inadequately characterized with only nine species previously reported. Collections of polychaetes from intertidal coralline rocks and several shallow sub-tidal sites on the Caribbean coast of Costa Rica have been examined and 68 species were identified. ResumenLa fauna de poliquetos en la costa del Caribe costarricense se ha descrito inadecuadamente con solo 9 especies reportadas anteriormente. Se estudiaron los poliquetos de de las rocas coralinas intermereales y varios sitios submareales someros en la costa del Caribe costarricense y se identificaron 68 especies, de las cuales 66 son nuevos registros para Costa Rica.

ABSTRACT

Se estudia la diversidad de anélidos poliquetos asociados al biotopo intermareal del manglar del Santuario Nacional los Manglares de Tumbes, Perú. El muestreo se realizó en dos sitios, uno cercano a la desembocadura y el otro distante aproximadamente 6 km rio arriba. En cada lugar se establecieron dos estaciones fijas, una asociada a zonas bajas del intermareal con presencia de Anadara tuberculosa (ZBI) y otra asociada a la zona altas del intermareal con presencia de Ucides occidentalis (ZBI). Los muestreos se repitieron en diciembre del 2012 y marzo del 2013. El número total de especies de poliquetos registrado fue 57, la composición de especies no fue similar entre las asociaciones y entre las estaciones fijas. Las estaciones asociadas a ZBI tuvieron un mayor número de especies, abundancias e índices de diversidad mayores que las estaciones asociadas a ZAI. En cuanto a los grupos tróficos, las estaciones asociadas a ZAI tuvieron 4 grupos mientras que las estaciones asociadas a ZBI tuvieron 6 grupos tróficos. En la poliquetofauna asociada a ZBI dominaron, en número de especie los carnívoros mientras que en la asociada a ZAI, fueron los carnívoros y los alimentadores de depósito superficial, asimismo dominaron en abundancia los alimentadores de depósito sub superficial. El análisis multivariado demostró diferencia significativa en la estructura y composición trófica de las asociaciones, con mayor dispersión y variabilidad en el ZAI.


The diversity of annelids polychaete associated with intertidal mangrove biotope of the Santuario Nacional los Manglares de Tumbes is studied. Sampling was conducted at two sites, one near the river mouth and the other distant about 6 km upstream. In each place, two fixed stations were established, one associated to high intertidal zone with the presence of Anadara tuberculosa (ZBI) and other associated to low intertidal zone with the presence of Ucides occidentalis (ZAI). The samples were taken in December 2012 and March 2013. The total number of species registered was 57 species composition was not similar between associations and between fixed stations. The stations associated to ZBI had more number of species abundances and indices greater diversity than to ZAI. As trophic groups, the stations associated to ZAI had four groups whereas stations associated to ZBI had 6 trophic groups. The poliquetofauna associated with ZBI dominated in number of species, the carnivores while poliquetofauna associated to ZAI, was carnivores and surface deposit feeders also dominated in abundance subsurface deposit feeders. Multivariate analysis showed significant differences in the structure and trophic composition of partnerships, with greater dispersion and variability in the ZAI.

AbstractThe family Nereididae includes more than 500 polychaete species described worldwide, and includes species common in many benthic environments, but some other species may tolerate freshwater or can even thrive in humid substrates in tropical forests. In estuarine environments, nereidid polychaetes can be abundant and relevant as a food source for resident or migratory birds. Laeonereis culveri (Webster, 1879) is a common estuarine species found in tropical and subtropical Atlantic American shores and was described from New Jersey; its median and posterior parapodia have upper notopodial ligules usually longer than the lower ones, and the latter are parallel to the notaciculae throughout the body. L. culveri distribution is from Connecticut to central Argentina; however, this wide distribution might be due to the inclusion of several other species as junior synonyms, despite that some morphological differences were found between them. One of such species is L. nota (Treadwell, 1941), that was described from Texas; its parapodia have notopodial ligules of about the same size, and the lower ones are oblique to the notaciculae. In order to clarify the differences between these two species, and to define which inhabits the Northwestern Caribbean region, topotype materials from these two species and specimens from Chetumal Bay were collected, and their morphological features were compared. Our results indicated that L. culveri and L. nota are different species and that the latter is found in Chetumal Bay. On the basis of mature specimens, L. culveri is hereby restricted to the Northern Gulf of Mexico and Northwestern Atlantic Ocean, and L. nota is reinstated and its distribution extends from Texas, in the Gulf of Mexico to Chetumal Bay, in the Northwestern Caribbean Sea. A key to identify all species in Laeonereis Hartman (1945) is also included.


ResumenLa familia Nereididae incluye especies comunes y frecuentes en muchos ambientes bénticos y cuenta con más de 500 especies en todo el mundo, y algunas pueden tolerar ambientes dulceacuícolas e incluso viven en sustratos húmedos en bosques tropicales. Como ocurre en otras especies estuarinas, los poliquetos neréididos pueden ser abundantes y relevantes como fuente de alimento para aves residentes o migratorias. Laeonereis culveri (Webster, 1879) es una especie común en estuarios, fue descrita de Nueva Jersey, E.U.A.; sus parápodos medianos y posteriores tienen lígulas notopodiales superiores generalmente más largas que las inferiores, y estas últimas son paralelas a las notacículas a lo largo del cuerpo. La distribución de L. culveri comprende desde Connecticut, E.U.A. hasta el litoral central de Argentina; esta amplia distribución podría deberse a la inclusión de otras especies como sinónimos menores, a pesar de las diferencias morfológicas entre ellas. Una de dichas especies, L. nota (Treadwell, 1941) fue descrita de Texas; sus parápodos medios y posteriores tienen lígulas notopodiales superiores de longitud similar a las inferiores, y estas últimas son oblicuas a las notacículas. Para clarificar las diferencias entre estas dos especies y determinar cuál de ellas se encuentra en el Caribe noroccidental, se estudiaron topotipos de ambas especies y se recolectaron ejemplares de la Bahía de Chetumal para comparar sus atributos morfológicos. Nuestros resultados indican que L. culveri y L. nota son especies diferentes y que la última se presenta en la Bahía de Chetumal. Con base en ejemplares maduros, L. culveri se restringe al norte del Golfo de México y Atlántico noroccidental y L. nota se reestablece con una distribución que se extiende desde Texas, en el Golfo de México a la Bahía de Chetumal, en el Caribe noroccidental. También se incluye una clave para la identificación de todas las especies de Laeonereis Hartman, 1945.
