ABSTRACT

It was considered that acupuncture syncope was closely related to excessive hunger or satiation, mental tension, physical weakness, inappropriate acupuncture manipulation, and poor ventilation and noise in consulting room. Once acupuncture syncope occurred, the needle should be withdrawn immediately and the patient took a lying position and drank warm sugar water for relief. Once acupuncture syncope occurred, the needle should be withdrawn immediately and the patient took a lying position and drank warm sugar water for relief. However, Yang Jizhou in the Ming dynasty has three aspects of the new discussion in Complete Compendium of Acupuncture and Moxibustion. That is, adverse weather resulting in acupuncture syncope, emergency acupoints and point combination for acupuncture syncope, and no withdrawal of the needle during acupuncture syncope. This article explores and analyzes the discussions and hopes to find the methods of avoiding and solving clinical acupuncture syncope to further improve the safety and efficacy of acupuncture.

ABSTRACT

Some new viewpoints are put forward by comparing the treatment of acupuncture syncope and the statement of its therapeutic effect in ancient and modern literature and in current textbooks and combining the authors’ understanding in clinical practice. Acupuncture syncope is not an acupuncture contraindication. If the body position is notaffected, the needles may not be withdrawn to avoid the consumption of qi. Clinical doctors should, on the one hand, pay attention to the therapeutic effect of acupuncture syncope in clinical practice and, on the other hand, not perform manipulations withstrong stimulation to blindly seek the therapeutic effect because acupuncture syncope has a more marked psychological effect on acupunctured persons.
