ABSTRACT

Abstract Restoration of fractured anterior teeth presents a challenge to dental clinicians owing to its esthetic requirements and, more importantly, because of the young age of the patients. Thus, it is important to follow the most conservative protocol. Many professionals face the dilemma of whether or not to perform enamel beveling. This article briefly discusses the clinical perspective and evidence regarding this type of operative restoration procedure.


Resumen: La restauración de dientes anteriores fracturados representa un desafío para los odontólogos debido a sus requisitos estéticos y, lo que es más importante, debido a la corta edad de los pacientes que generalmente necesitan del tratamiento. Por lo tanto, es importante seguir el protocolo más conservador. Muchos profesionales enfrentan el dilema de si realizar o no el biselado del esmalte. Este artículo discute brevemente la perspectiva clínica y la evidencia con respecto a este tipo de procedimiento de restauración quirúrgica.

ABSTRACT

RESUMEN La preservación de tejido dental sano contribuye a la práctica de una Odontología conservadora, permitiendo la aplicación de los principios biológicos y mecánicos de una forma más predecible. Las preparaciones cavitarias mínimamente invasivas son el complemento de la correcta selección de materiales adhesivos y de resina compuesta. La correcta aplicación de un protocolo adhesivo nos proporcionará resultados estéticos imperceptibles y un longevo desempeño clínico.


ABSTRACT The preservation of healthy dental structures contributes to the practice of a conservative dentistry. This concept involves the implementation of biological and mechanical principles in a more predictable manner. Minimally invasive cavity preparations are the complement to the selection of adhesive and composite resin materials. The correct application of an adhesive protocol will provide imperceptible aesthetic restorations and adequate clinical performance.

ABSTRACT

This review proposes to present some aspects of dental ceramics surface treatments, which involve the related physical and mechanical properties, as well as new technologies. The correct cementation of prosthetic restoration is essential for clinical success. However, the adhesive technique is a very recent procedure and clinicians should have a more detailed knowledge about the technique and related materials so that they can use them in their day-to-day clinical practice. Information about the the principles, indications and contraindications of adhesive cementation technique were obtained from the literature. The studies indicate that the adhesive system seems to be a valid option for fixed prosthesis cementation, since it has several advantages over conventional cementation method, especially in all-ceramic restorations. In clinical practice, the clinician should always keep in mind the characteristics of the material they are working with, so that they can select the best technique and the best cement for each clinical situation. Although more research is required in this field, there are no scientific reasons to contraindicate in routine practice.

ABSTRACT

Permeability involves the passage of fluids, ions, molecules, particulate matter and bacteria into and through a substance or tissue under different and varying conditions. The permeability of the dentin is essential to support the physiology and reaction patterns of the pulp-dentin organ. Nutrients and impulses are transported from the pulp via the odontoblast process and the contents of its tubules maintain the dentin as a vital tissue. However, the main interest of this paper focuses on penetration from the outside towards the pulp rather than from the pulp towards the outside. The present overview centers on the dentinal tubules; how they are formed and how they change as a result of normal and abnormal function, age, and pathological processes and the effect of these processes on the permeability of dentin. Particular attention is focused on the patency of the dentinal tubules.This overview is largely based on the author’s own research, clinical insights and active participation in continuing dental education over the last 50 years. It is not a review of the literature related to the permeability of dentin. Rather it presents interpretation of results related to the permeability of dentin based on experience and opinions acquired over a lifetime in dental research.


A permeabilidade envolve a passagem de fluidos, íons, moléculas, material particulado e bactérias para o interior e através de uma substância ou tecido sob diferentes e variáveis condições. A permeabilidade da dentina é essencial para a fisiologia e para os padrões de reação do órgão dentino-pulpar. Nutrientes e impulsos são transportados a partir da polpa por meio dos processos odontoblásticos e o conteúdo dos seus túbulos mantém a vitalidade da dentina. Entretanto, o principal interesse deste artigo concentra-se na penetração do exterior para a polpa e não da polpa para o exterior. O presente artigo centra-se essencialmente nos túbulos dentinários; como eles são formados e como eles mudam em razão da função normal e anormal, idade e processos patológicos, e o efeito destes processos na permeabilidade da dentina. Especial atenção é dada à patência dos túbulos dentinários. Este artigo apresenta uma visão geral do assunto e baseia-se amplamente nas pesquisas e percepções clinicas do próprio autor e em sua ativa participação na educação odontológica continuada ao longo dos últimos 50 anos. Não se trata de uma revisão da literatura relacionada à permeabilidade dentinária, mas sim da interpretação de resultados relacionados à permeabilidade dentinária com base na experiência e opiniões formadas ao longo de toda uma vida dedicada à pesquisa odontológica.

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study was to assess the current materials, methods and difficulties according to the year of licence and educational background of Korean dentists in Class II direct composite resin restorations. Total 17 questions were included in the questionnaire. Questions were broadly divided into two parts; first, operator's information, and second, the materials and methods used in Class II posterior composite restoration. The questionnaire was sent to dentists enrolled in Korean Dental Association via e-mail. Total 12,193 e-mails were distributed to dentists, 2,612 e-mails were opened, and 840 mails (32.2%) were received from respondents. The data was statically analyzed by chi-square test using SPSS(v. 12.0.1, SPSS Inc, Chicago, IL, USA). Male dentists among respondents was 79%. 60.3% of the respondents acquired their licences recently (1998-2007), and 77% practiced in private offices. 83.4% have acquired their knowledge through school lectures, conferences and seminars. For the Class II restorations, gold inlays were preferred by 65.7% of respondents, while direct composite resin restorations were used by 12.1% amalgam users were only 4.4% of respondents. For the restorative technique, 74.4% of respondents didn't use rubber dam as needed. For the matrix, mylar strip (53.4%), metal matrix (33.8%) and Palodent system (6.5%) were used. 99.6% of respondents restored the Class II cavity by incremental layering. Obtaining of the tight interproximal contact was considered as the most difficult procedure (57.2%) followed by field isolation (21%). Among various bonding systems, 22.6% of respondents preferred SE Bond and 20.2% used Single Bond. Z-250 was used most frequently among a variety of composite resins.

ABSTRACT

Objective To investigate the effects of a corrective tr ea tment on open bite malformations, such as gnash their teeth, nail-biting, tongu e thrusting, impacted tooth, cross bite with improper correction, open bite defo rmity resulted from premature shedding of deciduous tooth and molar cysts. Methods We used dental resin technology: acid etching the teeth, adh ering metal clasps to the teeth by means of composite resin, and applying elasti c bands for intermaxillary traction to correct the cross bite. Results We had treated 22 patients, age ranged from 7-30, with the malformatio ns resulted from different kinds of reasons, and obtained significant results. Conclusion With cooperation of the patients, simple corrections for open bite with sticky clasp and occlusion with elastic band are easy to car ry on, with short period of treatment time, and every patient gets prominent out come. It is effective, prior to commonly-used corrective therapy and deserves t o be widely used.
