ABSTRACT

Objectives: To reveal nursing competence acquired by nursing students via role-playing (RP) exercises and define the learning points necessary for acquiring practical nursing skills. Methods: Qualitative content analysis was performed using debriefing sheets (DSs) for adult nursing RP. There were 109 participants. Results: The DSs of 69 individuals who met the selection criteria were used as base data, and 1179 data items were extracted. The results showed that the structure included 3 main themes, 8 subthemes, 31 categories, and 121 subcategories. Conclusion: The results indicated that participants noticed the underlying elements that make up practical nursing skills, analyzed them using advance organizers based on previously learned knowledge, and applied the acquired practical nursing skills to newly proposed strategies for continuous self-management for adult patients with chronic disease and their families. One aspect of nursing competence, "ability to improve nursing quality," could not be extracted; the elucidation of this acquisition process is a task for future research.

ABSTRACT

Objective To discuss the pattern and effect of reading report activities on college-to-undergraduate nursing students in adult higher education. Methods We chose 154 college-to-undergraduate nursing students in adult higher education who studied at our department from 2009 to 2012 as control group, meanwhile the experimental group consisted of 168 college-to-undergrad-uate nursing students in adult higher education who studied at our department from 2013 to 2014.We used thefive-in-oneteaching method involving relevant scientific knowledge training, tutorial system, group report meeting, exchange of excellent reading report and score checking to train the experimental group, while the control group was still trained by primary method which was relevant scientific knowledge teaching and discussion of excellent reading report. Results The reading reports wrote by the students in the experimental group were superior to those wrote by the control group (P<0.001);The experimental group had better scores in the achievements of scientific knowledge and theory (P<0.001); The self-assessment of experimental group students in the ability of literature review, reading and analysis was higher than that of the control group (P<0.001).As to the effects of reading report such as enhancing scien-tific awareness, expanding scope of knowledge and so on, the experimental group had a obvious advantage over the control group ( P<0.001). Conclusion The five-in-onetraining pattern in the reading report activities involving relevant scientific knowledge training, tutorial system, group report meeting, exchange of excellent reading report and score checking can effectively improve the scientif-ic awareness of college-to-undergraduate nursing students in adult higher education, which is conductive to establish the basis of nurs-ing scientific research, guide the clinical nursing work and improve the comprehensive quality of students.

The study was carried out in 36 attached hospitals in nationwide universities from May to December, 1999, the two hundred and twenty five reports were for analysis. The contents of the collected nursing assessment tool were analyzed. It was found that the tool had been used with various names and content and there were instances of partial omission of a number of items, such as documentation and time records. Other results revealed that they mostly had a systematic classification of items, formation of details a form of a check list, and the effect of saving time. In spite of the adult nursing assessment tool, it was suggested that its style be subdivided according to the specialized of a department and that standardized style be amended and supplemented. The respondents also answered that there had to be education about continuous and sufficient health assessment skills on the physical examination record. The most frequently suggested items to be added were: past history, marital status, patient and caregiver's address and telephone number. It was found that a patient's education career, economic status, religion, hygienic practice, sexual life and hobby were the most frequently omitted items on record. The reason given wes because the items were associated with his/her privacy. These results highlight the importance of analyzing the content with an complete data collection, supplying basic content for a more accurate nursing record, computerization, sharing information and standardization of the form.

The questionnaire was constructed after several meetings of researchers which included course description, objectives, conceptual framework, credits(theory and practicum), number of teaching staffs, content and hours for each content. The questionnaire was sent to all of the nursing schools(41 baccalaureate and 62 diploma) in the nation and the response rate were 53.7% in baccalaureate and 25.8% in diploma schools. Primary analysis was took place during summer workship of 1997 Korean Academic Society of Adult Nursing. The second analysis was carried out after additional data of detailed content and hours in adult nursing course were obtained from the schools. The result of primary analysis were as below : 1) The consensus in philosophy of adult nursing was drawn. The client of adult nursing was defined as individual over 18 years who has psychological, physical, social and spiritual aspects and interacting with environment. The client is a member of family and community. The students who finished the course should be able to adapt nursing process to their clients, and improve quality of life. The client, nursing process and nursing were common concepts which included in their conceptual framework. 2) Theory credits ranged 9-18(mean 14.1), practicum credits ranged 5-12(mean 8.1). The number of teaching staffs ranged from 2-6(mean 3.2). 3) The content which most hours assigned to were neuro/endocrine(mean 30.8 hours) gastrointestinal(mean 28.4 hours), cardiovascular(mean 28.6 hours) and respiratory(mean 22.7 hours) systems. 4) Areas taught by other profession(mostly physician) were eye, ear, nose, throat integumentary, radiation therapy, neuromuscular, rehabilitation, respiratory physiology, male genitourinary, pathology and anesthesiology. 5) Contents overlap with other course content should be rearranged in each school curriculums. Improvement of RN national board examination is prerequsite in order to improve adult nursing education in Korea. The result of second analysis were as below : 1) Credits required for graduation were 130-175 in baccalaureate, 93-134 in diploma. Thirteen to Twenty-eight percent of total credits required for nursing major were credits of adult nursing. 2) Mean hours of total adult nursing lecture were 217 in baccalareuate and 212 in diploma. 3) Disease process occupied more hours than nursing process in adult nursing theory. It is suggested to include all nursing educational institutions in order to complete the survey, to delineate the core contents of adult nursing and rate of hours between theory and practise by Korean Academic Society of Adult Nursing.
