ABSTRACT

Objective: this paper summarizes the experience of the Research Group on Ergonomics, Work and Agriculture, within the graduate program of the College of Agricultural Engineering at Campinas State University, on the analysis of agricultural labor using the Ergonomic Work Analysis (EWA) method. Method: detailed reflection based on the theoretical and methodological EWA reference. Results: Reflections are shown on the EWA use in an academic research context focused on the study of agricultural work using studies on organic fruitculture and horticulture, sugar cane manual harvesting, in poultry production, in tomatoes packing houses and in forest harvesting. Conclusions: EWA was adequate as means of approaching the research object and its use helped to develop the initial hypotheses and set the methodological procedures details.

ABSTRACT

Purpose: To present the successful results of the single-bone reconstruction technique in the forearm in a patient who sustained an ulnar fracture and underwent multiple osteosyntheses and failed grafts. Case: Male patient, agricultural worker, who at age 39 sustained a left ulnar fracture. After 13 years and 5 surgeries involving different types of osteosyntheses and failed grafts, which resulted in infection of the left ulnar pseudoarthrosis, we decided to do a single-bone reconstruction of the forearm. He did well and achieved good function. His current status is: 20º of forearm supination, full elbow and wrist flexion and extension, appropriate muscle strength, and he returned to his job without functional limitations. Conclusion: The single-bone forearm reconstruction technique is, in properly selected cases, an excellent surgical alternative when reconstruction or salvage of the thoracic limb is required.

ABSTRACT

In this paper, the author presents an analysis of the construction of self in young people from families (known as tareferos) whose main occupation is to harvest yerba mate (a popular herb for mate infusion) and who live in peri-urban neighbourhoods in the provence of Misiones (in the North East of Argentina). The study focuses on the corporal, situational and emotional dimensions of the processes of constituting self. The author reflects particularly on the processes of objectification of the identities of young people, giving particular importance to the emotion of suffering in the formation of self. In this respect, it is noted that young people draw on various strategies linked to resistance to the identity and suffering of their parents. These findings demonstrate the important role of embodied emotion in the objectification of certain social relationships. An ethnographical approach is adopted to assess these processes.

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study was to investigate the factorial structure of life satisfaction in agricultural workers. One hundred and sixty−five (87 males and 78 females) agricultural workers mainly engaged in plastic greenhouse cultivation in southern Japan, ranging in age from 19 to 72 years (mean = 44.3 years), completed a questionnaire. Scores of life satisfaction showed a higher tendency in males than in females, and those in elders were higher than in younger people. Conversely, females showed higher stress scores than males, and younger people’s score were higher than the elders. Multiple regression analysis was performed to analyze the factorial structure of satisfaction. It is suggested that the level of life satisfaction is positively related to social support, and is negatively related to the impact of stressful life events, globally perceived stress and subjective symptoms of ill health. Stress levels depended on factors concerning the psychological demands of work, work posture, work hours and work environment. Different factorial structures were observed between female and male workers. Findings from this study suggest that a strong social support network may assist in enhancing life satisfaction. Furthermore, the ill health and stress experienced in agricultural work were associated with a reduced life satisfaction.
