ABSTRACT

Objective To study the optical imaging quality of multifocal intraocular lens (IOL) following Nd∶YAG laser damage. Methods Three hydrophobic acrylate discs used to make multifocal IOL were placed in line, and the Nd∶YAG laser was used to emit the posterior surface,mid-plane and anterior surface of the discs by gradually increasing the emitting energy to determine the damaged threshold energy of various planes.Eight multifocal IOLs were divided into 2 groups.IOL damage models were established by emitting 12 points along 12 clocks on circle of 3.0 mm in diameter in the group 1 (IOLs NO.1,2,3,4) and 6 points with 1-clock interval on circle of 1.0 mm in diameter in the group 2 (IOLs NO.5,6,7,8) with Nd∶YAG laser. The modulation transfer function (MTF),line spread function (LSF) and United States air force (USAF) test target images of the IOLs were tested under the optical aperture at 2.0,3.0 and 4.5 mm.Results The damage thresholds of laser power were not significantly different among three hydrophobic acrylate discs (Fgroup =1.100,P =0.337),and the thresholds were significantly different among different planes in the discs (Fposition =195.279,P=0.000),with the highest damage threshold in the anterior surface and the lowest damage threshold in the mid-plane of the discs(all at P<0.01).The shifts of far focus and near focus MTF curves,LSF curves and USAF target images of the IOLs under the 2.0,3.0 and 4.5 mm optical aperture after laser damage were in coincidence with those before laser damage both in group 1 and group 2.The glare phenomenon of the USAF target image was observed at near focus under the 4.5 mm optical aperture both before and after laser damage. Conclusions Multifocal IOL is vulnerable to injury when the laser beam focuses on the midplane, and the anterior surface of IOL can tolerate certain degree of damage. In standard model eye,the MTF curves,LSF curves and USAF target images of multifocal IOL was not impacted by laser induced spots injuries under different pupil diameters.

ABSTRACT

This article presents part of the results of a study developed with the first Brazilian Air Force women pilots. Its objective was to investigate how they experience the career until then prohibited to women, how they perceive the hierarchy and power relations typical of that professional realm, and what they project for their future. We interviewed six women pilots, whose reports were audio recorded, transcribed, and submitted to discourse analysis. Such analysis pointed to the fact that contemporary and traditional patterns of behavior coexist. At the same time those women invest in a pioneering professional career and search for financial independence, they continue to dream about marriage and motherhood in traditional formats, reinforcing the idea that women are the main responsible for household care and for raising and educating the children.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Though nursing officer system was introduced to ROKAF with the changes in ROKAF's medical environment and expectations toward nursing profession, its role is not clearly defined yet and this leads to the necessity of further research on systematic role development. This work, therefore, tried to supply basic information for its role development by finding out role expectations on nursing officer in ROKAF Base from air force members. METHODS: Surveys were conducted from Oct. 10 to Oct. 25, 2002 on three groups in ROKAF air bases: nursing officers, medical team and consumers of nursing services. For data collection, survey instrument was developed through research surveys and delphi method. Data were analyzed with SPSS Win 10.1. RESULTS: Results of the study is summarized as follows; 1) Surveys were conducted on 169 persons : consumers 109 (64.9%), medical team 32 (18.9%), and nursing officers 28 (16.6%). 2) The type of that nursing officers assumed were conducting are clinician, educator, researcher, consultant, administrator and military officer. 3)The degrees of role expectation on above roles were highest in nursing officers, followed by medical team and consumers. In detail, for the nursing officers group, the order was clinician (3.68+/-21), researcher (3.62+/-35), educator (3.59+/-27), consultant (3.42+/-43), administrator (3.42+/-39) and military officer (3.30+/-34). For the medical team group, the order was researcher (3.49+/-41), educator (3.48+/-49), clinician (3.38+/-37), military officer (3.23+/-45) and consultant (3.17+/-56). For the consumers group, the order of role expectation is researcher(3.18+/-48), clinician (3.14+/-39), consultant (3.12+/-53), military officer (3.10+/-48), educator (3.09+/-49) and administrator (2.93+/-44). All of the roles were defined as necessary by the three surveyed groups except the consumer group for the role of administrator. There were significant differences in the role expectation, between medical team group and nursing officers group, for the role as a whole (t=-2.46, P=.017) and for the role as clinician specifically (t=-3.79, P=.000). DISCUSSION: Based on the research results, I propose that clinician, educator, researcher, consultant, administrator and military officer the role of assumed by nursing officers in air base should be defined. Since role establishment and proper execution requires more comprehensive research to cope with excluded roles and on related matters such as personnel, organizational system, institution and regulation, inter-disciplinary studies are necessary.

ABSTRACT

The survey of occupational injury has not been performed in Korean Air Force. The aim of this survey is to identify the feature of the occupational injury at the Korean Air force base. The occupational injury were monitored at the medical group in a Korean air base, from Aug 1998 to Jul 1999. Because the medical group has supported 2 different groups, we analysed and described some results seperately; group 1 consisted of workers in line maintenance operation, group 2 included workers in base maintenance operation. There were 59 injuries(injured persons) in group 1, and 9 injuries in group 2, so the incidence(per 1000) were 21.5, 4.46 respectively. 11 persons transferred to well-equiped hospital. Most of injured persons were air men, and then sergeant, civilian employee in order. The median age of injured persons was 22 years old in group 1 and 21 years old in group 2. The median work experience was 0.8 and 8 years respectively. The median delay time to arrive at the hospital from the time of injury were 30 min in group 1, 20 min in group 2, but maximum delay in group 1 was about 9 days. The occupational injuries were most common in October in the year, Tuesday in a week. Also the injury occurred common from 13 to 13:59, and from 11 to 11:59 in a day. The injury occurred most commonly by the collision with something, when working with more than 4 coworkers, and repairing the machinery. The most common injured part of the body were hands and feet, the patterns of injury were laceration and fracture.

ABSTRACT

According to the principle of Coriolis acceleration stimulation on the semicircular canal system with rotational chair a simple exercise method for improving the vestibular stability has been developed. The results show that after exercising with our method for the group 1 (the subjects are the aircrew with serious airsickness reaction) the vestibular vegetative nerve reaction disappears;for the group 2 (the subjects are the aircrew with serious airsickness reaction, but without exercise,as contral group) the vestibular reaction, produced by Coriolis stimulation is not changed for the group 3 (the subjects are the aircrew without serious airsickness reaction in flight) the vestibular stability is improved after taking exercises according to our method. The effect of exercise with our method has been checked in flight. The sesults indicate that the effect is long lasting. Our method is easy to carry out without any special apparatus or equipments.
