ABSTRACT

Objective@#To investigate the application of the flipped classroom based on micro-class versus traditional class in animal surgery teaching, and to provide new thinkings for animal surgery teaching.@*Methods@#A total of 120 undergraduates from Navy Medical University were randomly divided into control group (class A) and experimental group (class B). The students in class A received traditional teaching, and those in class B received flipped classroom teaching. Questionnaire survey and course assessment were performed after teaching, and a comparative analysis was also performed.@*Results@#The self-assessment survey showed that 88.3%, 73.3%, 71.6%, 48.3%, and 73.3% of the students in class A (traditional teaching) filled in the questionnaire with "Very Helpful and Helpful", while 91.7%, 85.0%, 83.3%, 78.3%, and 75.0% of the students in class B (flipped classroom teaching) filled in with "Very Helpful and Helpful"; class B gave better overall evaluation of teaching model than that of class A. The mean total score of class B was 0.91, higher than that of class A (8.43 vs. 7.52, P<0.05), and the mean total score of examination papers in class B was 10.92, higher than that in class A (101.13 vs. 90.21, P<0.05).@*Conclusion@#Flipped classroom based on micro-class could improve the teaching effect of debridement course on animal surgery and increase students' self-learning ability.

ABSTRACT

Objective To investigate the training methods and evaluation parameters for donor lung procurement technique in swine models. Methods The surgical skills of donor lung procurement in 15 swine models were summarized. The operation time, objective evaluation parameters before lung perfusion, gross observation after lung perfusion, the type and frequency of intraoperative errors were assessed. Results All donor lung procurement surgeries were successfully completed in 15 swine models. The mean time interval from skin incision to lung perfusion was 22.6 min. Prior to lung perfusion, the oxygenation index of the donor lung was (501±68) mmHg, (404±100) mL (under the pressure of 15 mmHg) for the tidal volume and (29±4) mL/cmH2O for the static compliance. Along with the increasing surgical frequency, the oxygenation index and tidal volume were improved. Favorable lung inflation was obtained after lung perfusion in a majority of swine models. Intraoperatively, multiple operating errors occurred including dissection error, pulmonary arterial intubation error and procedure error, etc. As the frequency of operation increased, the frequency of surgical errors was significantly decreased. Conclusions After certain training for donor lung procurement in swine models, the incidence of intraoperative procedure error is significantly reduced and the quality of the donor lung tends to be enhanced. Objective parameters, such as oxygenation index and the gross shape of the donor lung can be utilized to evaluate the levels of surgical techniques.

ABSTRACT

Objective To systematically evaluate the study of animal surgery course among medical students with different majors and languages so as to provide evidences for further improve-ment education quality. Methods Ten majors and two kinds of international medical students (in total of 1 105 students;2009 grade)of Southern Medical University were subdivided into five groups ac-cording to the relationship with clinical operative manipulation. Quality of experimental animal surgery education was tested respectively. Then SPSS 13.0 was used to statistically evaluate and analyze the data. Measurement data between two groups were compared by t-test,multi-group analysis of variance between groups was conducted using one-way ANOVA. Ranked data between groups were compared using non-parametric Mann-Whitney U rank sum test. Merits and demerits of the curriculum were dis-cussed by combing statistical results with in-class condition to provide evidences for further improve-ment. Results There was no significant difference between clinical group and clinical professional group in aseptic technique and operation skills (P=0.739),but scores of the two groups were signifi-cant higher than that of associate group (P=0.004). Moreover, scores of international students who passed Chinese TOEFL were significant higher than the others (P=0.001). Differences between groups existed predominantly in the animal surgical practice rather than in basic theory or knot and sterilized methods. Conclusions For students with different majors and languages, different teaching key points should be paid attention to. Basic surgery techniques might be emphasized on for students with associ-ate clinical major and foreign students with poor Chinese language.

ABSTRACT

The course of fundamental operations in surgery is an important part of surgical teaching. It helps students to adapt to surgical practice quickly.During the teaching, there are some ways to improve teaching efficiency and quality, such as to know the new Chinese-English teaching material, the teaching purpose, the training of basic skills and aseptic principles of operation, the examination reform and regular teaching summery.
