ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: We monitored a group of students from Danwon High School who survived the Sewol ferry disaster for 27 months to examine the course of their psychological symptoms. METHODS: We performed a chart review at the Danwon High School Mental Health Center at the following time points (T): 9 months (T1), 12 months (T2), and 15 months (T3) after the disaster. Additionally, we performed a follow-up review at 27 months (T4). Subjects completed the ‘State’ section of the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory for Children, the Center for Epidemiological Studies-Depression assessment, the Child Report of Post-traumatic Symptoms, and the Inventory of Complicated Grief. Data from the 32 subjects who completed all four assessments were used in the statistical analyses. RESULTS: Scores of psychological variables tended to increase until T2 and then slowly decreased until T4. The severity of anxiety and complicated grief symptoms changed significantly over time, but the severity of depression and posttraumatic stress symptoms did not. CONCLUSION: We found that the symptoms of anxiety and complicated grief reported by Sewol ferry survivors from Danwon High School were exacerbated at the first anniversary of the disaster, but these symptoms subsided after the students graduated from high school.

ABSTRACT

June 8th of this year marks the 100th birthday of one of the 20th century’s most influential scientists, Francis Crick (1916–2004). Together with James Watson, he discovered the double-helix structure of DNA (Watson and Crick 1953) and led the way for cracking the genetic code, laying the foundation formolecular biology. For the last 28 years of his life, he focused on human consciousness. Life and consciousness were the main themes of Francis Crick’s impressive body of work. The energy and brilliance he exuded throughout his life has been likened to the ‘incandescence of an intellectual nuclear reactor’ (Sacks 2005). The groundbreaking discovery of the ‘right-handed’ double-helix structure of DNA byWatson and Crick might also have been the dawn of the age of ‘Molecular Handedness’. The DNA of every organism on Earth forms a right-handed double helix, but the reason for this preference remains a mystery to date. Life is composed asymmetrically. Natural proteins comprise left-handed amino acids, whereas nucleic acids possess right-handed sugars. The ribosome has been shown to be a ribozyme and, therefore, the evolutionary transition from the putative ‘RNA world’ to ‘RNA/protein world’ would be a key step in the establishment of life. tRNA aminoacylation exists as a bridge between both worlds and chiral-selective nonenzymatic aminoacylation has been shown to occur depending on RNA chirality (Tamura and Schimmel 2004). Crick’s final paper with Christof Koch proposed that the claustrum may be involved in consciousness (Crick and Koch 2005). (The first draft of this manuscript was completed by Crick on July 19th, 2004, and he was still refining it in the hospital on the day he died, July 28th. It is said that he ended the first handwritten draft with the urgent words, ‘What could be more important? So why wait?’ (Ridley 2006)) The claustrum is a thin sheet of grey matter on each side of the head, located concealed between the inner surfaces of the neocortex. The functions of the brain are also asymmetrical. As generally accepted, leftbrain thinking is verbal and analytical, whereas right-brain thinking is non-verbal, intuitive, and visual. Although the claustrum is present on both sides of the brain, is the origin of the human consciousness based on ‘Brain-Handedness’? Crick maintained that the only unsolved problem is the one on consciousness and free will, which might be related to brain-handedness (Crick 1994). He tried to break the shell of scientists and paved the way for thorough investigations on consciousness. In the future, the detailed local circuit diagram of the claustrum would be elucidated, which might contribute to understanding its actual function in terms of ‘Molecular Handedness’. Francis Crick remained indomitable until his last moment. He had no interest in being famous and wealthy. His passion for science will continue to inspire scientists now and forever. Crick offers that, ‘Nature isn’t conspiring against us to make important problems difficult, so given a finite life span, aim high – go after fundamental problems.’ Let us celebrate the 100th anniversary of his birth. The ‘new century’ has the potential for profound discoveries in ‘Handedness’.

ABSTRACT

The Japanese Society of Balneology, Climatology and Physical Medicine (JSBCPM) was founded in 1935 with the aim of researching the scientific bases of balneotherapy. The Society was admitted as the 15th affiliated member of the Japanese Association of Medical Sciences, which consists of 123 medical societies today. The scientific meeting of the Society has been held annually and the 80th anniversary meeting was celebrated in 2015.   The number of members has gradually increased over the past 30 years due to rising interest in balneotherapy. The members counted 1914, including 976 balneotherapists who had completed a training course for balneotherapy of which 221 were Society-certified balneotherapy specialists in 2015. The Society has held a training course for balneotherapy and study meetings in 7 areas of Japan once a year to promote balneology. The official journal (J. Jpn. Soc. Balneol. Climatol. Phys. Med.) has been issued quarterly and several textbooks relating to spa treatment have been published by the committee of the Society.   In the annual scientific meeting, several special lectures and an average of 50 free papers have been presented. The main concerns of the members, assumed from the percentage of titles of papers appearing in J. Jpn. Soc. Balneol. Climatol. Phys. Med., had been spa bathing treatment followed by climatology and the chemistry of hot springs water up until volume 50; however, they have recently shifted to the physiology of heat stimuli, health promotion with spa bathing and mox and acupuncture instead of climatology and chemistry.   The Society reported “the indications and contra-indications of spa treatment” in 2010 after 5 years’ research into medical references on balneology by request of the Ministry of the Environment. Based on this report the official notification for indications and contra-indications of balneotherapy was changed in 2014 by the Chief of Natural Environment in the Ministry of the Environment. The organization of balneotherapists has performed several studies on the effect of balneotherapy and reported the results of them in J. Jpn. Soc. Balneol. Climatol. Phys. Med., volumes 65 and 74.   The 39th Congress of the International Society of Medical Hydrology and Climatology (ISMH) was successfully held in Kyoto under the sponsorship of JSBCPM in 2014.
