ABSTRACT

Se presenta el primer reporte de la abeja colectora de óleo Centris (Odontoxys) melanochlaena Smith, 1874 en Nicaragua. Esta especie se distribuye en varios países de Centroamérica y México, siendo este el primer reporte en el occidente de Nicaragua. Este registro contribuye al conocimiento del rango de distribución de esta especie, así como también incrementa la lista de especies de abejas nativas de Nicaragua.


The first report of the oil-collecting bee Centris (Odontoxys) melanochlaena Smith, 1874 in Nicaragua is presented. This species occurs in several Central American countries and Mexico, being this the first record from western Nicaragua. This record contributes to the knowledge of the distribution range of this species, as well as increases the list of native bees occurring in Nicaragua.

ABSTRACT

The bee family Megachilidae consists of solitary species, some of which are important pollinators of cultivated plants. Although literature records indicate the existence of about 50 species of 10 genera of megachilid bees in Colombia, taxonomic studies are lacking and thus limited information is available on their identity as well as their distribution in the country. Herein, we provide new geographical records for the following ten species: Anthidium sanguinicaudum Schwarz, Chelostomoides otomita (Cresson), Hoplostelis bilineolata (Spinola), Megachile amparo Gonzalez, M. kalina Gonzalez et al., M. lorenziensis Mitchell, M. moderata Smith, M. simillima Smith, Pseudomegachile lanata (Fabricius), and Stelis costaricensis Friese. We report M. kalina for the first time for the country.


Las abejas de la familia Megachilidae son especies solitarias, algunas de ellas importantes polinizadores de cultivos. Aunque en la literatura se registran cerca de 50 especies de 10 géneros de abejas megachilidas en Colombia, faltan estudios taxonómicos y, por lo tanto, se dispone de información limitada sobre la identidad y la distribución de este grupo en el país. En este trabajo proporcionamos nuevos registros geográficos para 10 especies poco conocidas [Anthidium sanguinicaudum Schwarz, Chelostomoides otomita (Cresson), Hoplostelis bilineolata (Spinola), Megachile amparo Gonzalez, M. kalina Gonzalez et al., M. lorenziensis Mitchell, M. moderata Smith, M. simillima Smith, Pseudomegachile lanata (Fabricius), y Stelis costaricensis Friese]. Megachile kalina se registra por primera vez para Colombia.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT Anthidiini comprise a large, diversified, and widely distributed tribe of megachiline bees. Recently, morphological and molecular analyses recovered five major monophyletic groups within the tribe. For this reason, we review the current classification of the tribe, giving status of subtribe to these lineages. A new subtribe, Epanthidiina (type genus: Epanthidium Moure), is proposed for a large group restricted to the Neotropical region. Morphological and molecular phylogenetic hypotheses support the taxonomic limits of the new subtribe. We also propose a new genus, Urbanthidium (type species: Anthodioctes gracilis Urban), in order to accommodate results from a previous study in which Anthodioctes Holmberg came out paraphyletic. Two species are transferred to the new genus: Urbanthidium gracile (Urban) comb. n., Urbanthidium psaenythioides (Holmberg) comb. n.

ABSTRACT Three new genera of Protandrenini bees from South America are described. Luisanthrena new genus is proposed to include L. ruzae, new species (from Ecuador) and L. vargasllosai (Gonzalez & Alvarado, 2019), new combination (from Peru). The new genus Cisanthrena includes only the unusual species Cisanthrena perforata n. sp. from forested areas of the Andes in Peru. In addition, Austellurgus new genus is proposed to accommodate A. avulsus (Ramos & Melo, 2006), new combination (southeastern Brazil).

Abstract Sphecodini are a clade of obligatory parasitic Halictinae, comprising 332 species and five genera worldwide. Recently, Sphecodes Latreille was considered polyphyletic according to the results of a molecular phylogeny. Morphological analysis of Neotropical groups revealed groups of species in Sphecodes s.l. that can be recognized at genus level to improve the classification of the tribe. The main objective of this study is to review the generic classification of Sphecodini, with emphasis on Neotropical groups. I propose Austrosphecodes Michener as a separate genus from Sphecodes s.s. and describe a new genus, Melissocleptis gen. nov. for eight known species. Both genera comprise most of the Neotropical species. Nesosphecodes depressus sp. nov. is described for Brazil and a revised diagnosis for Nesosphecodes Engel is given to accommodate this new species and to include data on male terminalia. A revised key for the genera from the Western Hemisphere is provided.

Abstract The introduction of species is an important global threat to native ecosystems and yet little is known about invasion risks of non-native bees. Moreover, urbanization is increasing rapidly around the world with impact on the bee fauna. The city of Curitiba (Brazil) could be considered a model system for studies under this scope, with historical samplings and monitoring programs since the 1940s. This paper aims to quantify the current ecological impact of the non-native bee species present in Curitiba by using an integrative measure of impact and to define their current population status by classifying them into a unified framework for biological invasions. Ten sites were actively sampled in the metropolitan area of Curitiba during ten months. In addition to Apis mellifera Linnaeus, 1758, we found two others non-native species, Anthidium manicatum (Linnaeus, 1758) and Melipona scutellaris Latreille, 1811. None of them changed the native bee community structure, but they got different values of impact due to their ranges and abundances. While the honeybee is a known invasive species, A. manicatum was also considered invasive and has persisted in the city since the 1940s, interacting with the non-native plant Leonurus japonicus Houtt. M. scutellaris, a cultivated stingless bee species, had its first record for the city and fits the casual non-native category. We suggest monitoring the non-native bee species and actions centered on beekeepers to avoid future illegal introductions. The honey production or hobby interest on stingless bees can offer additional obstacles for species conservation when decoupled of scientific knowledge.

ABSTRACT

We describe and figure a distinctive new species of the bee genus Andinopanurgus Gonzalez and Engel (Andrenidae, Protandrenini) from Apurímac and Cusco in southern Peru. Andinopanurgus vargasllosai Gonzalez and Alvarado, n. sp., occurs at elevations above 4000 m in the Central Andes and is the second species of this genus in Peru. The new species possesses terga with semi-translucent distal margins, a unique feature among Andinopanurgus, and it combines morphological features of the two species groups previously recognized in the genus. To facilitate its recognition, we provide an updated key to species of Andinopanurgus.


Describimos e ilustramos una especie nueva del género Andinopanurgus Gonzalez y Engel (Andrenidae, Protandrenini) procedentes de Apurímac y Cusco, al sur de Perú. Andinopanurgus vargasllosai Gonzalez y Alvarado, n. sp., se encuentra en alturas superiores a los 4000 m en los Andes centrales y es la segunda especie del género registrada para el Perú. La especie nueva posee tergos metasomales con las márgenes distales semi-translúcidas, una característica única dentro de Andinopanurgus, y combina características morfológicas de los dos grupos de especies hasta ahora reconocidos en el género. Con el fin de facilitar la identificación, presentamos una clave actualizada para las especies de Andinopanurgus.

ABSTRACT Bees have a diversified natural history, thus the methods applied to study such diversity are varied. When it comes to studies of nesting biology, bees which nest in pre-existing cavities have been reasonably well studied since researchers started using trap-nests. However, bees whose nests are built underground are poorly studied due to the difficulty of finding natural nesting areas and the absence of a method that facilitates bee nest excavation. The latter is evidenced by the lack of accurate descriptions in literature of how nests are excavated. In this study we tested cylindrical rubber refills of eraser pen as a new material to be used as a tracer of underground nest galleries in a natural nesting area of two species of Epicharis Klug, 1807 (Apidae). We compared this technique directly with plaster in powder form mixed with water and our results with other methodological studies describing alternative methods and materials. The rubber refill technique overcame the main issues presented by materials such as plaster, molten metal alloys and bioplastic, namely: death of the organisms by high temperatures and/or formation of plugs and materials unduly following the roots inside the galleries.

ABSTRACT The Apidae community structure was studied in a vegetated area of coastal dunes in Lençóis Maranhenses National Park. Collections were performed monthly from August 2009 to July 2010. The collection methods included the use of entomological nets on flowers and Moerike traps. In total, 1211 individuals belonging to 59 species were collected. The pattern of abundance and richness was similar to those found in Maranhão and other coastal areas of northeastern Brazil. The bees were present throughout the year, with an increase in the number of individuals during the rainy season. Constant and dominant species included Trigona sp. gr. fulviventris, Apis mellifera, Plebeia alvarengai, Centris aenea, Xylocopa cearensis, and Centris caxiensis.

ABSTRACT

Register of a gynandromorph of Euglossa pleosticta (Hymenoptera, Apidae). Here we provide a description of a gynandromorph of Euglossa pleosticta with partial bilateral phenotypic asymmetry. The specimen was collected by cineol baittrap at Parque Estadual São Camilo, a conservation unit in western Paraná. The bee has mostly a female phenotype, except by the right half of its head, including the presence of 11 flagellomeres, ivory markings on scape and parocular area, by the pilosity of the right galea, and by deformed male characteristics on mid and hind tibiae of right legs.

The community of orchid bees (Hymenoptera: Apidae: Euglossina) was studied at an area in the transition between the Cerrado and Atlantic Forest biomes, from March, 2010 to February, 2011 in the Barroso region, state of Minas Gerais, eastern Brazil. Orchid-bee males were collected with bait traps containing three different scents (cineole, eugenol and vanillin) and with entomological nets for collecting bees on flowers. A total of 614 orchid-bee males were collected using aromatic traps, belonging to four genera and 15 species. Twenty-five female specimens belonging to two genera and at least three species were collected on flowers. Eulaema (Apeulaema) nigrita Lepeletier, 1841 was the most abundant species (50% of collected specimens), followed by Euglossa (Euglossa) truncata Rebêlo & Moure, 1996 (28%). Cineole was the most attractive compound (66.5% of males and 13 species), followed by eugenol (16% and 9 species) and vanillin (13.5% and 4 species). Eulaema (Apeulaema) marcii Nemésio, 2009 and Eufriesea auriceps (Friese, 1899) were attracted to all scents, whereas Euglossa species were collected only in cineole and eugenol.


A comunidade de abelhas-das-orquídeas (Hymenoptera: Apidae: Euglossina) foi estudada em uma área de transição entre o Cerrado e a Mata Atlântica, de março de 2010 a fevereiro de 2011, na região de Barroso, estado de Minas Gerais, sudeste do Brasil. Foram utilizadas armadilhas aromáticas utilizando-se três tipos de iscas (cineol, eugenol e vanilina) e redes entomológicas para a captura de abelhas em flores. Foram coletados 614 machos de Euglossina nas armadilhas aromáticas, pertencentes a quatro gêneros e quinze espécies, e vinte e cinco espécimes em flores, pertencentes a dois gêneros e três espécies. Eulaema (Apeulaema) nigrita Lepeletier, 1841 foi a espécie mais comum (50% dos espécimes coletados), seguida por Euglossa (Euglossa) truncata Rebêlo & Moure, 1996 (28%). O cineol foi a isca mais atrativa (66,5% dos machos e 13 espécies), seguido pelo eugenol (16% e 9 espécies) e vanilina (13,5% e 4 espécies). Eulaema (Apeulaema) marcii Nemésio, 2009 e Eufriesea auriceps (Friese, 1899) foram atraídas por todas as essências, enquanto as espécies de Euglossa foram coletadas somente em armadilhas contendo cineol ou eugenol.

Phylogeny and revision of the bee genus Rhinocorynura Schrottky (Hymenoptera, Apidae, Augochlorini), with comments on its female cephalic polymorphism. A taxonomic revision and a phylogeny for the species of Rhinocorynura are provided. Six species are recognized: R. briseis, R. crotonis, R. inflaticeps and R. vernoniae stat. nov., the latter removed from synonymy with R. inflaticeps, in addition to two newly described species, R. brunnea sp. nov. and R. viridis sp. nov. Lectotypes for Halictus crotonis Ducke, 1906 and Halictus inflaticeps Ducke, 1906 are hereby designated. Another available name included in Rhinocorynura, Corynuropsis ashmeadi Schrottky, 1909, is removed from the genus and treated as species inquerenda in Augochlorini. Rhinocorynura is monophyletic in the phylogenetic analysis and the following relationships were found among its species: (R. crotonis (R. briseis ((R. brunnea sp. nov. + R. viridis sp. nov.) (R. inflaticeps + R. vernoniae)))). Biogeographic relationships within the genus and comparisons with related taxa are presented. Females of all species exhibit pronounced variation in body size, in two of them, R. inflaticeps and R. vernoniae, with structural modifications possibly linked to division of labor. Identification key and illustrations for the species are provided.


Filogenia e revisão taxonômica das abelhas do gênero Rhinocorynura Schrottky (Hymenoptera, Apidae, Augochlorini), com comentários sobre o poliformismo cefálico das fêmeas. São apresentadas uma revisão taxonômica e filogenia para as espécies de Rhinocorynura. Seis espécies são reconhecidas, duas descritas como novas, R. brunnea sp. nov. e R. viridis sp. nov., e quatro com nomes disponíveis, R. briseis, R. crotonis, R. inflaticeps e R. vernoniae stat. nov., esta última removida da sinonímia com R. inflaticeps. Designam-se aqui lectótipos para Halictus crotonis Ducke, 1906 e Halictus inflaticeps Ducke, 1906. Outro nome disponível incluído em Rhinocorynura, Corynuropsis ashmeadi Schrottky, 1909, é removido do gênero e tratado como species inquerenda em Augochlorini. O gênero Rhinocorynura resultou monofilético nas análises filogenéticas, com as seguintes relações encontradas para suas espécies: (R. crotonis (R. briseis ((R. brunnea sp. nov. + R. viridis sp. nov.) (R. inflaticeps + R. vernoniae)))). As relações biogeográficas dentro do gênero e comparações com táxons relacionados são apresentadas. Fêmeas de todas as espécies exibem variação pronunciada de tamanho corporal, em duas delas, R. inflaticeps e R. vernoniae, com modificações estruturais possivelmente relacionadas à divisão de trabalho. São apresentadas chave de identificação e ilustrações para as espécies.

ABSTRACT

Male Neotropical orchid bees (Euglossini) collect volatile chemicals from floral and non-floral sources and store then in specialized hind tibial structures. The ultimate causes of euglossine fragrance collection remain a mystery. Recent evidence suggests that odoriferous substances play a role in euglossine courtship and serve as indicator of male genetic quality. Males of Eulaema nigrita were observed robbing scents from the detached hind legs of a conspecific male E. nigrita in Belém, Brazil. The hind leg seemed to have been detached during fights between males, since one male was missing a hind leg where the observation was made. This behavior appears to be common among males of E. nigrita since more than one case was observed on the same day. The observation reported here shows that males of E. nigrita with tibiae filled with fragrances are attacked by conspecific males that attempt to steal it.


Machos das abelhas das orquídeas (Euglossini) coletam substâncias voláteis de fontes florais e não florais e armazenam estas em estruturas especializadas nas tíbias posteriores. O motivo pelo qual estas substâncias são coletadas permanece um mistério. Evidências recentes sugerem que estas substâncias são utilizadas durante a corte e são indicadoras da qualidade genética dos machos. Neste estudo, machos de Eulaema nigrita foram registrados roubando substâncias de uma perna posterior arrancada de outro macho de E. nigrita em um parque de Belém (Brasil). A perna posterior parece ter sido arrancada durante lutas entre machos, já que no local de observação havia um macho sem uma perna posterior. Esse comportamento parece ser comum entre machos de E. nigrita, um vez que no mesmo dia de observação foram registrados dois grupos distintos de machos voando e lutando ao redor de uma perna posterior arrancada. A observação registrada neste estudo mostra que machos de E. nigrita, que apresentam pernas cheias de essências, são atacados por machos da mesma espécie que procuram roubar as fragrâncias armazenadas.

Megalopta Smith, 1853, is a Neotropical genus of nocturnal or crepuscular bees. Two subgenera are recognized with most of its nearly 30 species placed in the nominate subgenus. Species of Megalopta s. str. are more commonly collected than species of Noctoraptor Engel et al. 1997, all presumably parasites of Megalopta s. str. Two new species of Megalopta are described here: M. (Megalopta) tetewana, n. sp., from Mexico and M. (Noctoraptor) huaoranii, n. sp., from Ecuador. Megalopta Smith, 1853, es un género Neotropical de abejas nocturnas o crepusculares. Dos subgéneros son reconocidos con la mayoría de las 30 especies ubicadas en el subgénero nominal. Las especies de Megalopta s. str. son más comúnmente recolectadas que las especies de Noctoraptor Engel et al. 1997, todas probablemente parásitas de Megalopta s. str. Aquí se describen dos especies nuevas de Megalopta: M. (Megalopta) tetewana, n. sp., de México y M. (Noctoraptor) huaoranii, n. sp., de Ecuador. Se presentan claves de identificación para las especies de Megalopta s. str. de América Central y las especies del subgénero parásito Noctoraptor.

También presentamos comentarios sobre el estado actual del conocimiento del género Xylocopa en Colombia y guías para la identificación de los subgéneros y especies más comunes en el país.


We provide information on the nesting habitats of the carpenter bee Xylocopa (Neoxylocopa) lachnea from the cordillera Oriental of Colombia. We also provide an overview of the genus Xylocopa in Colombia as well as identification keys to the subgenera and most common species in the country.

As abelhas da subtribo Euglossina são importantes elementos da fauna neotropical, ocorrendo em maior diversidade em floresta tropical que em área de restinga. Essas abelhas são responsáveis pela polinização de inúmeras espécies de plantas, sendo consideradas boas indicadoras das condições ambientais. De fevereiro/2005 a janeiro/2006 foram coletados 429 indivíduos pertencentes a três gêneros [Euglossa (Latreille), Eulaema (Lepeletier) e Eufriesea (Cockerell)] e 14 espécies. As espécies mais frequentes foram Eulaema cingulata (Fabricius) (24,5 por cento), Euglossa cordata (L.) (20,5 por cento) e Eufriesea nigrescens (Friese) (19,8 por cento), constituindo 64,8 por cento dos indivíduos. Pluviosidade foi a variável ambiental que teve maior importância relativa sobre a variação da composição de espécies, pelo menos para algumas espécies de Eufriesea. Eg. cordata e Eg. gaianii Dressler nidifi caram em ninhos armadilhas colocados na área, o que sugere que são espécies residentes. A grande abundância e riqueza de espécies, quando comparadas a outros trabalhos, podem ser devidas ao mosaico de distintas formações vegetais encontrado nas áreas adjacentes ao sítio específico de coleta.


The bees of subtribe Euglossina are an important component of neotropical fauna and have greater species diversity in tropical forests than in spits. They play an important role in the pollination of several plant species and are considered good indicators of environmental conditions. From February 2005 to January 2006, a total of 429 specimens belonging to three genera [Euglossa (Latreille), Eulaema (Lepeletier) and Eufriesea (Cockerell)] and 14 species were collected. Eulaema cingulata (Fabricius) (24.5 percent), Euglossa cordata (L.) (20.5 percent) and Eufriesea nigrescens (Friese) (19.8 percent) were the most abundant species, representing 64.8 percent of all bees collected. Rainfall was the environmental variable with the greatest relative influence on species composition, particularly for some species of Eufriesea. Euglossa cordata and Eg. gaianii Dressler nested in trap nests, suggesting they are resident species. The larger number of individuals and greater richness of species compared with data available in the literature may result from the great variety of plant species found in the areas adjacent to the collection site.

ABSTRACT

A Mata Atlântica é um dos ambientes mais ricos e ameaçados do mundo, o que deveria ter estimulado em muito o estudo e a conservação do Bioma, mas a fauna de Hymenoptera permanece ainda relativamente pouco conhecida. Em especial, a fauna de abelhas da floresta ombrófila densa é pouco estudada em comparação à fauna das áreas abertas brasileiras. O projeto temático "Biodiversidade de Hymenoptera e Isoptera: riqueza e diversidade ao longo de um gradiente latitudinal na Mata Atlântica - a floresta úmida do leste do Brasil", integrante do Programa Biota-Fapesp, foi idealizado com o objetivo de catalogar térmitas, formigas e famílias selecionadas de vespas ao longo da Mata Atlântica, disponibilizando dados que permitam melhor embasar a conservação deste bioma. O protocolo de amostragem aplicada para a coleta de himenópteros (excluindo as formigas) empregou armadilhas Malaise, pratos-armadilha de cor amarela e esforço similar na varredura de vegetação ao longo de 17 localidades selecionadas, representando um gradiente de quase 20º de latitude na Mata Atlântica, dos Estados da Paraíba até Santa Catarina. Este protocolo foi definido para otimizar a coleta de vespas, sendo as abelhas um produto secundário da amostragem (levantamentos de abelhas em geral utilizam captura em flores ao longo das estações do ano). No entanto, devido à escala regional do projeto e ao grande esforço de amostragem, uma expressiva quantidade de abelhas foi coletada durante o projeto, incluindo novos registros de abelhas para a Mata Atlântica. Foi amostrado um total de 797 espécimes distribuídos em 105 espécies de abelhas; o grupo de abelhas mais rico e abundante foi Meliponina. The Atlantic Forest is one of the most rich and endangered natural environments in the world. It is expected then that this situation would have encouraged the study and conservation of this biome; the Atlantic forest Hymenoptera fauna, however, remains virtually unknown. The bee fauna, for instance, is less studied than that of the Brazilian open areas. The overall ignorance on most of the Atlantic Forest insect faunas based the elaboration of the project "Biodiversity of Hymenoptera and Isoptera: richness and diversity along a latitudinal gradient in the Atlantic Forest - the humid eastern forest of Brazil", within the Biota-Fapesp Program, that aimed to catalog the termites, ants and several wasp families along the Atlantic forest and to publish data that could contribute to the biome conservation. Similar sampling protocols were applied for wasp surveys: the same number of Malaise and pan traps and similar effort on vegetation swapping, along 17 selected localities, representing a gradient of almost 20º of latitude in evergreen pristine Atlantic Forest, from Paraíba to Santa Catarina Brazilian states. These protocols were defined to optimize the collecting of wasps; bees represented a 'secondary product' of the sampling protocol. A sum of 797 specimens representing 105 bee species was sampled; the richest and more abundant bee taxon was the Meliponina. Unfortunately the applied sampling method does not afford comparisons among Atlantic Forest bee assemblages with those of other biomes. The detrended correspondence analysis using only the relative frequencies of Meliponina species revealed a weak correspondence of the stingless bee assemblages' composition with the latitudinal gradient. ABSTRACT

Oxaea sooretama sp. nov. is described and illustrated and the females of O. alvarengai Moure & Urban, 1963 and of O. schwarzi Moure & Seabra, 1962 are described for the first time. New occurrences are included and a key to the species with blackened terga is presented.


É descrita e ilustrada Oxaea sooretama sp. nov. e, pela primeira vez, são dadas a conhecer as fêmeas de O. alvarengai Moure & Urban, 1963 e de O. schwarzi Moure & Seabra, 1962. São apresentadas novas ocorrências e uma chave para as espécies de Oxaea com tergos enegrecidos.

ABSTRACT

Panurgine bees are diverse and abundant in temperate areas of the Americas but poorly represented to nearly absent in the tropics. We describe and illustrate five distinctive new species of the genus Protandrena that occur at high altitudes (2000-3400 m) in the Andes, from Venezuela to Ecuador. The species are also described to make the names available in forthcoming papers on their biology. These Andean species resemble some members of the subgenus Heterosarus but differ from it, as well as from any other subgenera of Protandrena, primarily in characters of the male genitalia and hidden sterna. The South American Protandrena s. l. are morphologically highly diverse and a complete study of the group is needed before supraspecific names are proposed for unusual species. Thus, to avoid further nomenclatural changes, we decided not to place these species in a new subgenus or any of the available subgenera. We also provide notes on the biology for some of the species.


As espécies de abelhas da subfamília Panurginae nas áreas temperadas das Américas são diversas e abundantes, mas pouco representadas ou até ausentes nos trópicos. São descritas e ilustradas cinco novas espécies do gênero Protandrena que ocorrem em grandes altitudes (2000-3400 m) nos Andes, da Venezuela ao Equador. As espécies são descritas para que se tenham nomes válidos em artigos sobre sua biologia. Estas espécies andinas são semelhantes a alguns membros do subgênero Heterosarus, mas diferem dele, assim como do subgênero Protandrena, primariamente pelos caracteres da genitália do macho e pelos esternos ocultos. Protandrena s. l. sulamericanos são morfologicamente muito diversos e um estudo completo do grupo deverá ser feito antes de serem propostos nomes supra-específicos para essas espécies. Portanto, para evitar futuras mudanças na nomenclatura, foi decidido não alocar essas espécies em um novo subgênero ou em qualquer outro. São fornecidas também notas da biologia para algumas espécies.
